GTA 5 unveiling tells us a lot

GTA 5 had its big debut yesterday, with a lot of new information coming out in the latest issue of Game Informer. Dan Houser, one of the co-founders of the GTA series, Dan Houser, explained that the new game would involve heists, multiple playable characters and that each of them effects the plot of the game.

Houser explained that the reason for including two others allows for players to be doing what was the most fun at any time. If they weren't in the mood for driving, they could switch to another one of the other characters and be shooting out the window – perhaps similar to the way you could have your partner drive for you in L.A. Noire. Apparently you'll be able to switch between characters at almost any time.

The multiple protagonists helps explain why we've seen screenshots that appear to be focused on different characters. We know one is an East Coast gangster attempting to leave his past behind, but details on the other two have been thin on the ground. The names are Michael,Franklin and Trevor. The former is the ex-bank robber we've heard a little about, Trevor is an experienced pilot and war veteran with a drug problem, while Franklin is a repo man, a “young and ambitious hustler.”

The cover art for the game was also revealed, showing the three 'heroes'

In terms of the game world itself, Rockstar says it has improved almost every mechanic from previous games, as well as making it the biggest GTA map ever. It's apparently bigger than GTA IV, San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption combined.

Lots of new vehicles, including quad bikes, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, trucks, cars, helicopters, planes, jet skis and fighter jets.

Those – like myself – hoping for a return of buyable in-game businesses will be disappointed, as while there will be a “fun and vibrant economy,” there won't be any property that can be bought. If you were a fan of side missions and mini-games however, then you'll be pleased, as there's lots of base-jumping, tennis and golf to take part in. You can also scuba dive along the coast.
