Supermassive Games faces layoffs as games industry woes continue

Supermassive Games appears to be the latest game studio to run into financial issues. Over the past year, thousands of developers have lost jobs due to various cuts at companies across the games industry. Now, it is being reported that Supermassive, the studio behind Until Dawn, The Quarry and other horror titles, could be shedding around half of its workforce.

Supermassive Games is best known for Until Dawn, a fantastic PS4 exclusive that is due to get a remake for PS5 and PC later this year, although that remake is being handled by an entirely different studio under Sony's direction, with Supermassive not involved in the project. Unfortunately due to “significant challenges” within the games industry, the UK-based studio may be letting go of almost half of its 300-person strong staff, as reported by Bloomberg.

Supermassive Games has already confirmed the Bloomberg report, stating that it is set to undergo a ‘restructuring' due to financial issues. The studio currently has around 300 employees, and around 150 employees are expected to be let go. Just last month, the studio's founders left the company, a move that now appears to have been a red herring.

Since the release of Until Dawn in 2015, Supermassive Games has worked on some PSVR titles, as well as its own line of episodic horror games known as The Dark Pictures Anthology and the 2K-published spiritual successor to Until Dawn, The Quarry, which didn't do quite as well as the original game.

KitGuru Says: A downsizing of this level will no doubt have a significant impact on upcoming projects from Supermassive. The chase for growth and consistently bigger and more impressive titles is catching up across the industry and after a tough 2023 for layoffs, it seems we can expect even more in 2024.
