While EVGA may not be in the graphics card market anymore, the company is still ticking with power supplies, with some units being very popular in the US. Unfortunately, EVGA is making headlines this week for the wrong reasons, after an RMA customer had 22TB worth of SATA drives killed by a replaced power supply.

The power supply is the heart of your PC, supplying power to all critical components. This is the exact reason we always advise on picking up a reputable unit, backed by high efficiency certification and strong reviews. Unfortunately, this isn't always a recipe for success though. Over on Reddit, a user has reported that an RMA'd EVGA power supply has killed off 22TB worth of storage.

The issue begins when the user's EVGA GQ1000W power supply exhibited coil whine, so EVGA had them hand on to their modular cables and reclaimed the power supply. The Redditor was then sent back an ‘identical' unit, but was not informed that the replacement PSU had new internal pinouts. As a result, 12V of power was sent to the SATA drives through older 5V cables, essentially frying all of the connected drives.

When contacting EVGA support, a customer service representative did send out a new batch of cables compatible with the pinouts from the newer version of this PSU, but the damage was already done and the drives were defunct.

As spotted by Tom's Hardware, EVGA did not offer to replace the impacted drives, despite this blunder. If important information had been passed on properly, this entire situation could have been avoided, but due to lapses in communication, this user is now out of an expensive collection of drives and recovering whatever data was on them may not be possible.

Fortunately, this is a rare issue and isn't the sort of thing we hear about very often. One thing is for sure though, more care needs to be taken in the PSU RMA process to ensure customers have the right cables when getting a replacement unit, and we should all be paying a little more attention to our modular cables and their compatibility with future power supplies.

Enermax has recently launched its latest power supply, the PlatiGemini 1200W. This PSU is the world's first to support Intel ATX 3.1 and ATX12VO standards while maintaining an 80Plus Platinum certification.

As with any ATX12VO-compliant PSU, the PlatiGemini doesn't have 3.3V and 5V lines, reducing energy conversion losses. It offers adaptability for present and future technical needs by supporting both 24-pin mainstream motherboards and 10-pin energy-saving 12VO motherboards. As such, this power supply provides just 12V to the system components, resulting in less energy loss and higher overall efficiency.

The PlatiGemini also supports PCIe 5.1 and Intel ATX 3.1 standards, can withstand power surges of up to 235%, and has a native 600W 12V-12×6 cable, making it capable of delivering enough power for high-end graphics cards. The PSU is equipped with Japanese capacitors, and its power efficiency exceeds the 80Plus Platinum certification requirements. It achieves up to 94% efficiency under average loads and 74% efficiency under 2% loads.

The PlatiGemini has a 135mm dual-ball bearing fan, and its built-in semi-fanless technology allows the fan to stay turned off until it hits 60% working load or when over-temperature protection kicks in. Additionally, the PlatiGemini comes with Enermax's Dust-free Rotation (D.F.R.) self-cleaning technology, which expels dust via an immediate reversing fan spin when the system is turned on.

The PlatiGemini's power cables are mesh-sleeved, improving cable routing and management. Currently, this PSU is only available with 1200W capacity. The Enermax PlatiGemini power supply is now available in the US for $249.99.

The post FSP reveals full product line-up for 2024 first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
As part of last month’s EHA Tech Tour, KitGuru was invited to meet with senior staff at FSP’s headquarters on the outskirts of Taipei. Globally, FSP is one of the top 10 manufacturers of power supplies for all consumers goods, but they claim third spot when it comes to PC power supplies. During our visit, we had a good look at new power supplies not yet available in the UK, as well as new cases and cooling solutions – all part of FSP’s ramp up in design and production for 2024/25.

FSP’s new PSU products fall into three distinct categories, with variations based on functionality, price point and overall power delivery. Having developed and co-produced the world’s first ATX power supply, in conjunction with Intel, back in 1995 – and the introduction of the first PSU with a 120mm fan in 2004, FSP told us that they are all about setting and achieving standards. They certainly set a standard in 2023 with the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W Platinum – which turned out to be the best PSU we saw all year. Right now, they are aligned with standards like Energy Star 9.0 and ATX 12v 3.1.

Part of FSP’s plan for its PSUs in 2024, involves a ‘rationalisation’ of the previous line up. It will now market under three brands – alongside a ‘Special Edition’ category for products that don’t naturally sit in one of the main slots:-

Vita
Series of a dozen mainstream PSUs with the Vita DB at the low end for system integrators and undemanding office PCs – Bronze rated and with 550-850W options and 5 year warranty. High-end Vita products like the GM and GD come with main Japanese bulk capacitors, Gold certification, 10 year warranty and power ratings from 550W through to 1,000W.

Advan
The ability to run fanless up to 30% load is a key feature with this series. There are low end Advan BD units for system builders who need a better quality PSU from 350W to 800W, but the main designs are the Advan GM and PM with ratings from 650w to 1,000w.

Mega
The name is a bit of a give-away. There are three variants, with the Gold certified GM offering 850w to 1,200w options, the Platinum rated PM offering 1,000w to 1,650w and the Titanium-rated TI from 850w to 1,650w. All have a 10 year warranty, are fanless up to 40% load and have Japanese electrolytic capacitors.

Special Editions
Some cool stuff falls into this category, including the Cannon Pro, which we saw in two variants. The ‘entry level’ version of this substantial PSU, delivers 2,000w with an 80+ Gold rating. Its big brother is the new Cannon Pro 2,500w with an 80+ Platinum rating. We asked about the likely application for such a PSU and were told that FSP developed it in response to a need from those powering local Ai systems that might want to use four RTX 4090 cards in one physical chassis. The Cannon Pro is ATX12 3.1 and EPS12 v2.92 compliant.

Twins Pro integrates a pair of smaller form factor ‘hot swappable’ PSUs into a single case, with options up to 900 watts – 80+ Gold rated.

Finally, the small form factor Dagger Pro and PM units can deliver 550w (Gold) to 1,000w (Platinum) with the ability to run fanless for loads under 20%.

A similar three-tier structure applies to FSP’s chassis line-up for 2024, with everything from entry level to high-end cases available. In terms of design and physical size, all would appear to be suitable for gaming PC builds. At the high-end, the stand out product is the CUT593 which, at the time of writing, is under the microscope at KitGuru labs. It had its first public outing at Computex, but is now ready for mass production. It comes in a black or white finish.

As you can see from our photos, the Premium Edition features an innovative cable management system, with preinstalled and neatly arranged motherboard power cables. Whether you tell your friends the truth or, instead, claim to have black-belt levels of cabling management, is up to you.

The front panel is detachable and replaceable, held in place by magnets and it comes standard with three 140mm ARGB fans alongside a single rear fan.

The top of the chassis can accommodate a 360mm All-In-One cooling system radiator, with space for three additional top fans in a push-pull configuration for optimal heat dissipation. From what we can tell, the high-end version will ship with both front panels, so you can choose between air flow and dust reduction. If the basic version goes on sale for less than £99, then it could attract the interest of a lot of enthusiasts.

The CST360 is probably more suited for a creator in terms of styling. This micro-ATX case can take a VGA card up to 370mm in length and a CPU cooler up to 165mm.

The CMT580 is an E-ATX case, but mid-tower sized. Comes with four fans pre-installed and can support vertical or horizontal installations. Your CPU cooler can be up to 160mm, but your graphics card will be limited to 335mm.

Finally, the CMT380 has a dual chamber design, can take a cooler up to 160mm and a GPU up to 410mm. The fact that it is has glass panels on the front and sides, means that you’ll be able to show off your building skills.

FSP's cooling solutions were integrated into the system builds that they showed us. They certainly look the part, but we'll only know how likely they are to succeed when we have put them through their paces in the KitGuru Labs.

KitGuru says: FSP is clearly capable of making market-leading products and the design team certainly has plenty of ideas. We’re now awaiting an indication as to when all of the products we saw will be available in the UK channel (and at what price). We’re hoping to see them before the end of Q1.

FSP has revealed its product lineup for 2024, which includes a 2500W power supply. The Cannon Pro 2500W boasts 80 Plus Platinum certification, ATX 3.1 standard standards, and an updated PCIe Gen5 connection.

Geeknetic shared the details about the company's 2024 product lineup, where the highlight was the upcoming Cannon Pro 2500W power supply. Featuring three PCIe 6+2-pin and four PCIe 12V-26 connectors, this PSU is theoretically able to power up to four RTX 4090 cards. However, if you try to do that, you won't have much free power left for other components. The new FSP power supply is fully modular, providing configuration versatility even with only one RTX 40 card. It should also be compatible with next-generation RTX 50 cards, even if they require double the power.

Besides the 2500W PSU, FSP revealed other less powerful units under various series. Below the Cannon series, we have the Mega series (TI, PM, GM), followed by the Dagger series (PM), the Advan series (PM; GM, BD+, BD), and lastly, the Vita (GM, GD, BD). Moreover, the Hydro PTM Pro will get 1350W and 1650W variants, and the Hydro G Pro units will be available with up to 1200W (previously up to 1000W).

Moving on to the PC cases, the company is planning various new models. Of all, the first to catch our interest was the CST360, a compact mATX case with a front mesh and side tempered glass panels. Another interesting-looking one is the CMT380A, which is pretty much FSP's take on the Lian Li O11 Mini design. Then, there's also the CMT580, a mid-tower version of the O11 Mini Air (or O11 Evo with front mesh). Lastly, there's the new CUT593 E-ATX PC case series with swappable front panels and a focus on cable management.

Today, ThermalTake is launching what should be its best power supply yet. The new Toughpower TF3 offers 1550W of capacity, supporting the highest-end ATX 3.0 graphics cards, with two native 12V2X6 modular cables and 80Plus Titanium efficiency.

The TF3 1550W meets Intel ATX 3.0 standards, supporting up to 200% total power excursion, 300% GPU power excursion, and 70% low load efficiency. Additionally, the TF3 1550W has great GPU compatibility, it includes two native PCIe 12V2X6 connectors that can connect to the latest RTX 40 series graphics cards, but you also get 8-pin PCIe cables too if your GPU has the older standard connectors.

With 80Plus Titanium efficiency, this power supply has high efficiency up to 94 percent, resulting in lower power loss and heat build-up. The PSU also relies on Japanese capacitors, a stamp of quality for many power supplies due to their reliability.

Other features of the TF3 1550W include a Turbo Fan button, allowing you to increase the PSU fan speed under high loads, as well as low ripple noise below 30mV, strict voltage regulation, power interruption protections, low transient response, as well as OCP (Over Current Protection), OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection) and OTP (Over Temperature Protection).

The Thermaltake Toughpower TF3 1550W will be available starting this month, priced at €399.90.

But how do you know what to look out for? In this guide, we go over everything you need to know and give our top PSU recommendations for 2023...

The post KitGuru’s Guide to Buying a Power Supply (2023) first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
One of the biggest mistakes that a relatively inexperienced system builder will make is to place all the component focus on the most powerful processor, motherboard and graphics card while trying to save money on the power supply, often purchasing a no-name brand from China. When I am building a new rig I generally work out the power I will need first then buy the best supply I can afford, while leaving enough headroom for a possible upgrade.

Step 1 – Modular or not?

If you have a system chassis with a windowed side panel and are focusing on a tidy system build, then you will more than likely want to buy a modular power supply. There are several kinds of modular power supply available today. A ‘Pure’ modular power supply will have no hardwired cables. This means when you open the box and remove the power supply, there won’t be any cables dangling from the unit itself. A separate bag will be supplied, with every cable in it.

Other modular (or semi-modular) power supplies will have some cables hardwired into the chassis. These hardwired cables will often be the main motherboard connector, and perhaps a couple of PCIe cables and the CPU 8/4 pin connector – these primary cables are generally used all the time.

If you don’t buy a modular power supply, then you will end up dealing with a plethora of cables you might not be using. All of these will need carefully routed out of sight behind the motherboard tray. Depending on the case you are using and the specific power supply, this can get messy.

Many computer cases don’t have a lot of space behind the motherboard tray, so you will need to get creative. If cable routing is a high priority for you, we advise you opt for one of the modular supplies currently available online. You won't be trying to hide a snakes nest of cables you don't need.

We have seen many manufacturers moving away from these hardwired units as we move in 2024, but in the budget sector they are still fairly widely available.

How much power do you need?

Don’t just blindly purchase a power supply with a 1250W or higher output rating, especially if it is in the bargain basement section on some dodgy website. Many gaming systems will likely be only demanding between 400 watts and 650 watts under load. Also, with a little research it is possible to analyse the power demand of the hardware you are using in your system and working from there. While it is true some high end graphics cards such as Nvidia's RTX 4090 can still demand more than 500 watts on their own, a more modest offering such as the RX 7800 XT will be only demanding closer to 250 watts (HERE). If you own a high end RTX 4090, you could see system power draw at the wall to be between 650 watts and 800 watts (HERE) depending on the processor being used. For those interested in a quick trip down memory lane, when we reviewed a system featuring two R9 295X2 graphics cards back in 2014, this system demanded close to 1200 watts at the wall (HERE). Yes, seriously.

So how much power do you really need? A good example is that a high end gaming system utilising a Core i7 processor with Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti is likely to be only demanding between 400-500 watts of power under load. Many people would think just because a system is using a high end graphics card that a 1500W power supply is immediately needed. It is also worth bearing in mind that lesser brands with high wattage ratings will not be delivering the same quality of power as a well implemented design. Don't be immediately fooled by higher figures on a box.

If you have a system that uses 600 watts of power when gaming under load, then a 1000 watt power supply is actually a pretty shrewd investment – because you will be hitting around 60% demand under full load and in reality this means the power supply will be operating at, or close to, maximum efficiency. Noise levels will be lower, as the fan will be spinning relatively slowly. The  capacitors, specified to deliver 1000 watts, will also be less stressed.

So to clarify, a power supply will reach maximum efficiency between 40% and 60% of its maximum rated load. It is also always prudent to leave a little headroom to add in some additional hardware at a later date. Ideally you don't want to be running a power supply at above 80% full output on a regular basis. Not only will it be operating outside maximum efficiency parameters, but the fan will likely be working much harder to maintain the thermal curve. A faster spinning fan means more noise, which in the real world, most of us want to avoid.

Efficiency

Obviously this is only part of the procedure for buying the right power supply. You can also factor in the 80 Plus certification. This is the certification of rated efficiency. This will certify products that have more than 80% energy efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load. That is, such power supplies will waste 20% or less electric energy as heat at the specified load levels, thus reducing electricity use and bills compared to less efficient power supplies.

KitGuru recommends at least 80 Plus Gold certification, and when you spend more money this will increase to Platinum and Titanium certification. Platinum and particularly Titanium power supplies are still very expensive – 80 Plus Gold units have proven popular with the enthusiast audience in the last 5 years as they combine high levels of efficiency at a reasonable price point.

Be aware that some power supplies don’t achieve the claimed efficiency levels. There have been many articles on this in the past and it certainly complicates the issue. Just because you see an 80 Plus Gold badge on the front of the box, it doesn’t mean the power supply actually has been certified. That said, as an example – all of the Seasonic power supplies we have tested in recent years have achieved their efficiency rating.

Ripple

Ripple performance is also an important factor when deciding on a power supply, because if a specific unit falls outside industry tolerance specifications, it can be potentially dangerous. Ripple occurs with all SMPSUs (switch mode power supply units). These are tiny fluctuations in a power supply's output voltage in the order of tens of millivolts, millions of times a second. Ripple is measured as a peak-to-peak value in millivolts and is measured using an oscilloscope. We detail this, and more, in all KitGuru power supply reviews.

The ATX specification sets these limits on computer PSU ripple levels (meaning we don’t want to see results in excess of these figures below):

+12V – 120mV
+5V – 50mV
+3.3V – 50mV
+5VSB – 50mV

Ideally (in my opinion) we want to see figures in this range:
+12V – 80mV
+5V – 35mV
+3.3V – 35mV
+5VSB – 50mV

A power supply which shows ripple outside (higher) than that listed by the ATX specifications can potentially cause hardware damage. There is no way of measuring when a problem might occur, but it is very possible something will go wrong, long term. A power supply that shows good ripple suppression will help aid hardware longevity.

Ripple can have a negative impact on electrolytic capacitors. A ripple reading close to a capacitor's rated ripple will potentially shorten the lifespan and ripple exceeding its rated level could cause it to blow. It is worth pointing out that electrolytic capacitors are found on a motherboard, a graphics card, the power supply and more – so the potential for damage is high. Using a power supply with good ripple suppression is very important. If you want to learn more about this, there are plenty of in-depth technical articles available online.

Additionally, If you are trying to build a quiet system it is important to factor in the fan performance of the unit. A fan that has to work hard to maintain good internal ambient temperatures will likely produce a lot of noise which can be distracting, especially if the rest of your system has been built with silence in mind. We also detail this in our reviews.

What should you buy?

So what power supplies to we recommend to buy? Thankfully, 2023 has been a great year for power supply releases, and we have reviewed a handful of stellar units this year. We haven't had many lower wattage units in to test in 2023, so we start at 850 watts and upwards.

At 850 watts we recommend the Silverstone Hela Series 850R Platinum (PCIE 5.0) power supply. We reviewed this back in April. This unit is created in conjunction with partner High Power, and is Platinum rated. It adopts high quality 105C rated capacitors from respected Japanese brand Rubycon (total output of 940uF). The primary side is APFC, Half Bridge and LLC Converter. This is a really quiet unit as well. You can buy this power supply from Overclockers UK for £219.95 inc VAT (HERE).

Read our full review of the Silverstone Hela Series 850W Platinum (HERE).

At 1000 watts we recommend the Seasonic Focus GX-1000 Gold (ATX 3.0) power supply. This is a more affordable 80+ Gold rated unit priced at around the £170 mark in the United Kingdom. This power supply was able to deliver close to 1,150 Watts before safely shutting down. It ships with 105c rated high grade capacitors from respected Japanese brands Nippon Chemi Con and Nichicon. Seasonic don't rely on any OEM – they design and create all their own supplies from the ground up. Ripple suppression rates as excellent and the high quality fluid dynamic bearing fan from Hong Hua helps ensure longevity. One of the key talking points is the small physical footprint at 140mm, ensuring it will fit easily into a variety of cases on the market today.

You can buy this unit from Overclockers UK for £169.99 inc VAT HERE. Be aware there is an older version of this power supply, if you are ordering online from an etailer be sure to check the EAN is correct for the latest ATX 3.0 model (4711173878049).

Read the full review of the Seasonic Focus GX 1000 Gold power supply (HERE).

At 1200 watts we recommend the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W Platinum power supply. This is another highly specified Platinum rated, fully modular unit and design and built in house by FSP themselves. This unit adopts a well cooled layout and quality components throughout both primary and secondary stages. FSP are using 105c rated Japanese capacitors from Nippon Chemi Con, so no corners are being cut.

The unit achieved Platinum efficiency ratings, topping out around 95% in our testing. Ripple suppression is also excellent, falling well within industry parameters, peaking at only 25mV at full load on the +12V Rail.

This is another quiet unit, with the fan remaining almost silent up to loads of 500 watts. FSP opted for a reasonably aggressive fan profile, but they achieved a fairly balanced level, ensuring good air flow in warmer, more humid environments.

The only negative with FSP power supplies is poor availability in many regions globally. We always receive emails and public posts on our social media asking where to buy FSP power supplies. FSP have told me several times in the past that they are trying their best to improve distribution, but it still seems to be an ongoing issue sadly. This power supply is one of the best available today and if you manage to find one, they consider yourself very fortunate!

You may have some luck with the links below when buying (FSP supplied these at the time), but sadly we have no UK direct sales links available to share.

  • AMAZON (USA) HERE
  • NEWEGG (USA) HERE
  • MINDFACTORY (Germany) HERE

At 1600 watts we recommend the Seasonic Prime TX-1600 ATX 3.0 Titanium power supply. We reviewed this monster unit back in July and it walked away with our highest MUST HAVE award.

This power supply is not messing around, it measures 210mm long and it wont fit into smaller cases on the market today. Internally it is crammed with high quality components and Seasonic have not cut corners with the design or choice of components. Seasonic choice of 105 rated Japanese capacitors also showcases the serious intent – this unit is packed with three massive 820uF capacitors from Nippon Chemi Con for a staggering total output of 2460uF. This is significantly higher uF than the 2022 version of this supply which we reviewed back in September 2022 (HERE).

Due to this massive capacity we noticed Seasonic have used dual NTC thermistors with 20 Ohm x2 resistance. These are installed on a vertically mounted board into the main PCB to save horizontal foot print. This new version also has an upgraded power delivery capable of peaks of 3200 watts.

As this unit is designed for the most demanding users, the price point won't be accessible to a wide audience. It is available at Overclockers UK for £479.99 inc VAT (HERE). Again be careful! Because if you are buying this unit online, be sure you get the latest 2023 ATX 3.0 model, as the older 2022 model is still being sold (and often at the same price as shown in the image above).

Following various reports of 12VHPWR power connectors melting, PCI SIG has issued an updated version, usually referred to as 12V-2×6. This new connector promises to solve most of the problems the 12VHPWR connector had, and tests show us exactly that.

HardwareBusters recently paid a visit to Linewell, the company responsible for producing power cables for a number of OEMs. Because many power supply manufacturers are moving to the new power connector design, Aris and his colleagues opted to travel directly to where these cables are being tested.

During its visit, HardwareBusters saw Linewell doing an extended-duration test (50+ minutes) on a new 12V-26 cable. With the cable fully inserted, the temperature of the connector was around 46 °C. Linewell employees then test with the cable only partially inserted with the same power setting. Despite receiving a huge 55 Amps and consistently delivering over 640W of power, thermal imaging revealed that the cable's temperature only reached a modest 41°C, far from melting.

These new GPU connectors should prevent incidents of melting connectors. When the sensing pins responsible for negotiating power utilisation are not correctly attached, they should limit the supply power delivery to just over +600W. The goal of this test, however, was to show that the new power pins are not only more conductive but also less vulnerable to overheating. Even under situations of extreme bending in all directions, the temperature of the cable remained constant. However, it is unclear if power supply providers would change their bending distance guidelines.

At this point, all new RTX 40 series graphics cards sent to consumers feature the new 12V-2×6 GPU connector. Unless you get a card that has been on the shelf for months, you'll most likely get one using the latest GPU power connector.

KitGuru says: While we hope that no complaints of these new cables melting emerge, it's important to remember that every power cable and connection has some chance of failure, and no design is completely failproof.

It was reported a few months ago that PCI-SIG was working on a brand-new ATX 3.0 connection to replace the 12VHPWR plug. This new connection, known as the 12V-2×6, improved on the current 12VHPWR 16-pin connector by making it safer and simpler to use. FSP has now stated that it will use the most recent standards in its ATX 3.0 portfolio, which will be available this year.

The news comes from QuasarZone (via @harukaze5719), who paid a visit to the customer centre of SparkleTech, a Korean FSP distributor. They learned that the Hydro G Pro, Hydro PTM, and SFF Dagger Pro series were highlighted as the first FSP PSUs to use the new ATX 3.0 12V-2×6 connectors and are planned to come out sometime during H2 2023.

The majority of Nvidia's RTX 40 GPUs, including the RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070, and RTX 4060, are already using the 12V-2×6 power connectors. Some of the recently manufactured RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are also equipped with this revised connector.

This year, we anticipate more manufacturers will provide ATX 3.0 PSUs with 12V-2×6 power connectors. Other PSUs may also be updated with the new connectors, but to properly comply with the new standard, a firmware update for the graphics card or power supply may be necessary.

XPG has recently introduced the XPG Core Reactor II series of 80 Plus Gold modular PSUs. Built on the foundations of the original Core Reactor PSUs, the new series aims to maintain the same build quality and compact form factor that distinguished its predecessors delivering stable, efficient, and consistent power and quiet operation with a well-balanced fan curve.

The Core Reactor II Gold series is, according to XPG, the result of the company;s dedication to listening to community feedback, with significant enhancements derived directly from user requests. For example, the new design is now more in line with the gaming market in terms of its design, as well as offering an extra form factor for higher wattage models (1000 W and 1200 W).

All new XPG Core Reactor II PSUs meet the Intel ATX 3.0 criteria. These new PSUs were built to be capable of handling the new high-end graphics cards and systems with high power consumption, coming with a 12VHPWR (12+4-pin) connector and cable. The fully-modular design is also a welcoming feature because it reduces unnecessary cable clutter. Moreover, thanks to its reduced dimensions, with the 1000 and 1200 W models measuring 86x150x160mm and the remaining models measuring 86x150x140mm, it should fit in virtually any M-ATX, ATX, or E-ATX PC case.

The XPG Core Reactor II Gold series PSUs are also certified 80 Plus Gold, offering good power efficiency at low, medium, and high loads. These new PSUs are available in a range of sizes and colours, depending on the power level required. There is a suitable unit for any system among the five wattage choices: 650 W, 750 W, 850 W, 1000 W, and 1200 W. The XPG Core Reactor II Gold series is protected by eight industrial-grade protections (OPP, UVP, OVP, SCP, OTP, OCP, NLO, and SIP) and comes with a worry-free 10-year warranty.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: The Core Reactor II Gold feature set is quite impressive. Even if there are plenty of 80 Plus Gold PSUs capable of outputting 1200 W of power, the compact dimensions and general aesthetics of the XPG Core Reactor II units might be enough to help them stand out in this crowded market.

Thermaltake has introduced a new Smart BM3 Bronze series, a line of compact PSUs with 550W, 650W, 750W, and 850W models. The Smart BM3 Bronze is ATX 3.0 compliant, supports PCIe Gen 5.0 12+4-pin, and has an abundance of 8-pin connections to provide plenty of options. Thermaltake also claims ‘the highest stability', thanks to Japanese primary electrolytic capacitors and 80 Plus Bronze efficiency.

The Smart BM3 Bronze series is compliant with Intel's ATX 3.0 standard, meaning it can withstand 200% power excursion and achieve 60% efficiency at 2% load. Furthermore, these new PSUs can power RTX 40 series GPUs with a native PCIe Gen 5.0 connection via the 12VHPWR connector, while your traditional 8-pin PCIe connectors are also in place for other graphics cards. Furthermore, the Smart BM3 Bronze has a Smart Zero Fan design to reduce unwanted noise, as the built-in 120 mm fan only spins when the load reaches 20%, though there is a physical switch to toggle this mode on and off.

Thermaltake's new Smart BM3 Bronze PSUs are equipped with high-quality Japanese 105°C/221°F main electrolytic capacitors, something Thermaltake claims results in improved longevity and stability. The Smart BM3 Bronze can offer a consistent supply to PC components thanks to its DC-to-DC architecture and high-amperage single +12V rail design. Furthermore, this power supply is 80 Plus Bronze-certified and Intel C6/C7 state-ready. In addition, the Smart BM3 Bronze series has comprehensive industry-grade protection (OCP, OVP, UVP, OPP, SCP, and OTP) to ensure the safety of your system.

The Smart BM3 Bronze – TT Premium Edition PSUs will be available in August 2023 and come with a five-year warranty. The 550W model will go for $64.99/€74.90 MSRP, the 650W model for $69.99/€84.90, the 750W model for $79.99/€94.90, and the 850W model for $89.99/€109.90.

Antec is expanding its impressive array of PSUs with the introduction of the new NeoECO Gold M ATX 3.0 power supplies, available in two striking models – a sleek black variant and an elegant white variant. The NE Gold M ATX 3.0 series in white is limited to 850W and 1000W models, but the black coloured models can go up to 1300W.

With premium JP capacitors, unwavering stability, and 80 Plus Gold-certified efficiency, the NeoECO Gold M ATX PSU series can meet most users demands. As expected from a modern high-end PSU, it comes with a PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR GPU cable to power new-gen graphics cards like the RTX 4090. Moreover, Antec's new PSUs were designed to offer a good building experience and reduce unnecessary cable clutter, featuring a fully modular design with a wealth of cable-management possibilities.

The PhaseWave Design lends steadfast power output, perfectly complemented by the cooling prowess of the built-in 120mm FDB fan. Thanks to the PSU's integrated advanced thermal control and the Zero RPM mode, the fan only operates under considerable load. Performance and stability are further enhanced by a server-class LLC design with synchronous rectification based on a cutting-edge DC-DC topology.

The CircuitShield design ensures industry-grade protection, cultivating a secure environment for your system regardless of the setting. To further solidify this package, the NE Gold M ATX 3.0 series arrives with an impressive 10-year warranty. The new NeoECO Gold M ATX power supplies are now available, starting at $139.99.

A couple of weeks ago, we reviewed another FSP power supply, the Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W. As it turns out, we got our unit quite a bit ahead of schedule, with FSP officially announcing availability this week.

The Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W power supply from FSP performed admirably in our testing, earning our Must Have award for its fully modular design, top-tier components, stable power delivery and excellent load regulation, putting this particular unit into class-leading territory.

As of this week, the Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W and 1000W models are available in Europe, priced at €214 and €190 respectively. While the previous FSP unit we reviewed, the Hydro Ti Pro, was not available in the UK and continues to be elusive months later, the Hydro PTM X Pro 1200W can be found on Amazon UK, but with a higher-than-expected price tag of £378.83 – but at the time of writing, there is only one left in stock and due to the way the product is named, many may mistake it for a different power supply entirely.

It is our hope that FSP will be able to improve its availability situation in the UK market, as finding their products in stock at retailers continues to be a bit of a challenge.

Phanteks has recently announced the addition of the Revolt 1000W and 1200W Platinum, and 1600W Titanium PSUs to its lineup. The new Phanteks Revolt PSUs do not include any cables as they were designed to be paired with CableMod kits, giving users complete choice over their cable selection.

The new Revolt PSUs were designed in partnership with Seasonic to meet the highest industry performance and reliability criteria. All Revolt power supplies fully meet and surpass the newest Intel ATX 3.0 requirements, ensuring compatibility and simple integration into any system. These PSUs provide enough power for demanding systems, with wattage capabilities of up to 1600W and 80 Plus Platinum or Titanium certification.

Phanteks and CableMod collaborated to make cable choices easier for users constructing within Phanteks chassis. Users just need to visit CableMod's online configurator and choose their Revolt PSU, Phanteks case, and CableMod cables. As of now, only the following Phanteks chassis are currently supported, with more to come: Evolv X, G500A, P500A, P600A, and NV7. Support for the NV5 and NV9 will come at a later date.

The new Revolt PSUs and CableMod cable kits will be available starting in August. The Revolt 1000W Platinum models will go for £174.99/€199.90/$199.99 and the 1200W models for £214.99/€249.90/$249.99. As for the Revolt Titanium 1600W PSU, it will cost £344.99/€399.90/$399.99. Lastly, the Revolt cable kit PCIe Gen5 starter set will release priced at £69.99/€79.90/$79.99 and the Revolt cable kit complete set at £154,99/€179.90/$179.99.

We just published our full in-depth review of the new flagship Seasonic Prime TX-1600 ATX 3.0 TITANIUM rated unit today. In this video I take a look at what you can expect from the Platinum 1600W power supply, launched today. Bear in mind these power supplies are quite expensive and targeting the high end audience – who want the best power money can buy.

04:40 Prime Family Line up and details

In the video today I unbox the 1600W Platinum unit and show you what you get inside – alongside the cables and usual extras. The new double edged PSU tester and 90 degree adapter is certainly a worthwhile addition, especially for people building into specific cases.

Seasonic are releasing three new high end units. The SSR-1600TR2 (Titanium rated 1600w) priced at £469.99, the SSR-1300TR2 (Titanium rated 1300w) priced at £399.99 and the SSR-1600PD2 (Platinum rated 1600w) at £389.99.

Be sure to check out our 1600 Watt Titanium rated power supply over HERE.

KitGuru says: While these power supplies are expensive, we feel it is often a false economy skimping on the quality of power you put into your new system – sure, you likely won;t need 1600w, but remember maximum efficiency is between 40% and 60% load. We have seen black screens, BSODs due to bad power supplies, and even in worst case scenarios – motherboards and processors being destroyed. Buy once and get a good unit, instead of wasting money on bad power supplies  which will need replaced regularly – check out our power supply review index for what we feel should deserve your attention.

Seasonic have just released a new range of power supplies in the PRIME TX range, in both Platinum and Titanium efficiencies. While they sent us some other Platinum units, today we test the company's flagship 1600W Titanium model which is priced at a somewhat staggering 550 euros / 480 pounds.

The Seasonic PRIME Titanium range is certainly fully populated now, with 1600w ATX 3.0, 1300w ATX 3.0, 1000w, 850w, 750w and 650w units available, alongside both 700 and 600 Fanless options.

As we would expect this supply is a fully modular design, equipped with a large fluid dynamic bearing fan, gold plated high current terminals, and a full suite of OPP, OVP, UVP, OCP, OTP and SCP protections.

This unit is priced at an eye watering 549.90 euros or £480 of our King Charles pounds. Married men need not apply.

2023 has been a good year so far for FSP – the last PSU I reviewed from them (FSP Hydro Ti Pro 1000W) was one of the best I have tested in recent years. Based on a lot of emails we received, if FSP could get around their long term supply issues, many of our readers would already have that unit in their systems. Today I take a look at another power supply from the company, the Platinum-rated Hydro PTM X Pro.

This new unit from FSP is ATX 3.0 compliant. It is a fully modular unit, rated at Platinum efficiency levels. FSP claim the unit incorporates 105C-rated Japanese capacitors for longevity and reliability and it is a modern day half bridge LLC topology circuit design. Furthermore, unlike other units with this kind of power output, FSP are trying to keep the footprint compact (130mm), for better support in a wide variety of chassis design. This is always welcome to see.

Features:

  • High power density inside 130mm chassis
  • LLC Half Bridge Topology
  • 450V, 105c Rated Japanese bulk capacitors
  • Quiet and durable FDB fan
  • 100,000 hours MTBF
  • Fully modular design.
  • +12V single rail design
  • Complies with ATX 12V V3.0 and EPS 12V V2.92
  • Eco Semi fanless control switch
  • Black Flat cables
  • Complete protection: OCP/OVP/OPP/SCP/OTP
  • 10 Year Warranty

Nvidia and PCI-SIG have been collaborating on an updated power connector in response to the issues reported with the 16-pin (12VPHWR) version. The incidents of cable melting were attributed to improper connections between the power supply and GPU, resulting in overheating. Consequently, the focus of the revised version was to enhance safety measures that would effectively minimise such occurrences.

According to Igor's LAB, both entities have been working on a new connector design for several months now. The design known as 12V2x6 will undergo more standardised testing to ensure that each cable version is designed to meet the specified requirements. Importantly, this new design is part of the new PCIe 6 standard. Additionally, it is a part of the CEM 5.1 specification for the ATX 3.1 standard that PCI SIG has proposed.

The new PCIe 6 connector will maintain compatibility with some existing 12VHPWR connectors, but the new version will have different specifications, including adjusted sustained power metrics that may necessitate firmware changes in PSUs and GPUs.

There are no differences between the 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 headers, meaning that the cables should still be compatible. Both connectors will use the same 12 power rails and four sense pins, the main focus of the updated version. The most notable change is the relocation of the pins, which are positioned further back to ensure they engage only when the cable is fully inserted. Additionally, encoding will need to be updated to comply with the new standards.

Nvidia and PCI-SIG are currently evaluating two options for the cable connector design. The current draft is said to be at an advanced stage, and it is possible that the new connector will be implemented on graphics cards starting next year. It is worth mentioning that the 12V-2×6 connector has already been observed on some PSUs showcased at Computex 2023. MSI, for example, presented a new yellow connector that appears to be designed to meet the new standard, as indicated by the new label on the A850GL PCIE5.

The team over at HardwareBusters also confirmed that the 12+4 pin cable configuration on the PSU side will remain unchanged for manufacturers and brands (such as Corsair) that don't use 12+4 pin connections on modular PSUs. However, if a PSU does use 12+4 sockets, then the new connector design will indeed have implications on that side as well. While there are indications of backward compatibility, it hasn't yet been confirmed by PCI SIG.

KitGuru says: A revised power connector may debut as early as next year. Whether or not it will fix all of the issues remains to be seen.

Back when the RTX 4090 first began making its way into the hands of consumers some found their 12VHPWR connectors melting on the side connected to the graphics card. Now, the first user report of a 12VHPWR cable melting on the PSU side has surfaced.

In photos shared to Reddit, one be quiet! Dark Power 13 user found their native 12VHPWR cable had melted on the side connected to the power supply, reigniting some concerns around the reliability of 12VHPWR cables. The images show damage to the bottom row of pins on both the connector and the PSU port.

be quiet! is already investigating this issue and it is worth noting that right now, this is an isolated issue, with only one public report. If you encounter something similar, you should contact be quiet! support to report the issue. They may want to ask a few questions about your PC setup in order to try and find the root cause.

For now, we don't know exactly what caused the issue. When 12VHPWR connectors were melting on RTX 4090s, some degree of user error was found, but that user error was compounded by certain design decisions, as users were inadvertently not pushing in the connector all the way, or were accidentally loosening it while routing cables.

KitGuru says: It will be interesting to see exactly what went wrong here. Hopefully the cause of the issue can be recognised soon enough, although in rare cases like this, troubleshooting can take a bit longer.
