Announced all the way back in 2022, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has been a long time coming. Following a delay and 50 million pre-registrations, the full fat Warzone experience is now on mobile.

Making the announcement on their blog, Call of Duty’s Valerie Lee said “It’s here! Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has arrived worldwide and is available now to download for free to play on iOS and Android.”

For the uninitiated, Warzone Mobile is a separate release to the already-existing COD Mobile. Built on the IW engine used to power the modern COD titles, Warzone Mobile is much closer to a full blown console-like experience.

This is even more so the case thanks to cross-progression for all aspects of the game with both Warzone proper and Modern Warfare III – meaning you can now XP grind on the toilet.

Despite its name, Warzone Mobile includes much more than just the Battle Royale mode, with a “selection of classic Multiplayer maps and modes” including Shipment, Shoot House and Scrapyard being thrown in for added measure.

It’s been a long time coming, but Call of Duty Warzone Mobile is finally here.

KitGuru says: Will you give the game a shot? Did you play the previous COD Mobile? How do the two compare? Let us know down below.

According to the latest rumours, Apple is all set to introduce its new M3 iPad Pro line-up, featuring OLED panels instead of the mini-LED displays currently used in these devices. The 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants of the M3 iPad Pro are expected to be unveiled on March 26th. However, there is no concrete evidence to support this claim, as the date seems to be based on an estimate of when third-party protective covers for the iPad Pro will become available on Amazon.

ITHome (via Wccftech) brought the release date of the protective cases to our attention. While it is exciting to hear about the potential release of the M3 iPad Pro, we should take the rumoured date of March 26th with a grain of salt, as there isn't any concrete evidence to support it.

The M3 iPad Pro is expected to be announced via a simple press release, similar to the M3 MacBook Air. Besides packing the new M3 chip, the upcoming iPad Pro tablets are expected to use OLED instead of mini-LED panels, theoretically allowing Apple to make the new devices thinner than their predecessors.

Other possible changes would include the inclusion of MagSafe wireless charging and small design modifications. Additionally, Apple might announce a new Magic Keyboard attachment featuring a larger trackpad and an aluminium deck, giving the iPad Pro a similar look and feel to a MacBook keyboard.

KitGuru says: The iPad Pro has been due an OLED upgrade for quite some time. It has been rumoured time and again, but perhaps 2024 will finally be the year. With the new M3 chip, it will also be interesting to go back and see how games like Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village perform.

After years of legal battles and all sorts of shenanigans, Epic Games’ relationship with Apple has come to a mutual standstill – thanks to the EU’s new Digital Markets Act. With the law now in effect, Epic Games have announced that its Epic Games Store is coming to mobile devices later this year.

Announced during GDC and via Twitter, Epic revealed to fans that “We’re coming to iOS and Android! Same fair terms, available to all developers, on a true multi-platform store –  with amazing games for everyone.”

The app will arrive at some point before the end of the year; its release coinciding with the official relaunch of Fortnite on iOS.

Epic Games have been fighting to have their own store front in the mobile space for quite some time now. It will be interesting to see how Epic proceeds, and whether it will all have been worth it for them.

A recent report claims Apple is working on a foldable 20.3-inch MacBook, with plans for mass production to commence in 2027. According to the report, this foldable MacBook is the only foldable device from Apple with a known development plan.

Although rumours about Apple's foldable MacBook have surfaced before, with previous reports suggesting that Apple was considering a foldable tablet, the design of the foldable MacBook remains a mystery. However, it is rumoured to have a single foldable OLED display that can be used in various configurations, including as a laptop mode with a virtual keyboard on the bottom half of the screen or as a large tablet when fully unfurled.

The new report comes from Ming-Chi Kuo (via Apple Insider), who has “set” a more firm release date for the upcoming foldable device. While there has been ongoing speculation regarding the possibility of a foldable iPhone or iPad being mass-produced in 2025 or 2026, the foldable MacBook is the only gadget with a definite timeline.

Apple seems to be taking a more cautious approach to introducing foldable devices, compared to rivals like Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei, who have already launched foldable smartphones. Apple is working on improving the technology before bringing it to market. As Apple's first foldable device, it will be interesting to see what design decisions are made and what hardware configurations are included.

KitGuru says: With more companies prototyping foldable devices, it's no surprise that Apple is also planning to launch such devices. Still, it seems that we'll have to wait a few years before seeing a foldable phone, tablet or laptop from the company.

Apple is sticking with its decision to keep Epic Games' development account for iOS closed. The news follows on from Epic Games' planned return to iOS later this year and now, EU regulators appear to be getting involved.

Epic Games explained that its iOS developer account access has been terminated again. According to Epic, Apple cited ‘public criticism' against the company, claiming that Epic Games is a ‘threat' to Apple's ecosystem. Epic CEO, Tim Sweeney, took to Twitter to share the post that Apple took issue with. It is a tweet from February 26th of this year, in which Sweeney offers his opinion of Apple's recent moves.

Now, as spotted by Bloomberg, the European Commission is getting involved, with a spokesperson confirming that it has “requested further explanations” from Apple regarding its decision to block Epic's developer access to iOS. The Commission wants to examine whether or not Apple has breached its digital market rules.

Apple is in a spot of bother already in the EU, as the commission recently imposed a €1.2 billion fine on the company following a successful complaint from rival streaming service provider, Spotify. Apple is also having to come to grips with the EU's Digital Markets Act, which will force certain parts of Apple's business to operate differently. The EU has also recently forced Apple to adopt the USB-C standard for the iPhone moving forward, doing away with the proprietary Lightning connector.

KitGuru Says: There appears to be lingering animosity between Apple and Epic Games. Now we'll have to see how involved the EU will get here and if it will be able to force Apple to grant access to Epic Games to develop software for iOS.

Apple has recently unveiled the latest MacBook Air laptops powered by the new M3 chip. While it was expected that the MacBook Air would receive a similar upgrade to the MacBook Pro, it was unclear when it would happen. However, Apple has finally announced that it has updated the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air, with both models already available for pre-order.

Externally, no modifications have been made to any of the laptops. The 13-inch MacBook Air underwent a complete redesign two years ago, including a boxier chassis, a larger 13.6-inch display, an upgraded 1080p camera, and a MagSafe charging connector. On the other hand, the 15-inch MacBook Air was introduced less than a year ago and shares many of the same features as its smaller brother.

The most significant improvements to the updated MacBook Air models can be found under the hood. The M3 processor is based on a 3nm node and supports various new technologies such as ray tracing, mesh shading, and dynamic caching. The M3 found on the new MacBook Air laptops is Apple's latest entry-level processor, offering an 8-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU. Apple claims that the CPU performance is up to 35% faster, and the GPU performance is up to 65% faster than the M1. Moreover, the CPU and GPU are up to 20% faster than the M2.

Apple has also included support for up to two external screens, a significant improvement from the M1 and M2 Macs that could only handle one external display. However, it is worth noting that the MacBook Air must be closed for both displays to function. Both MacBook Air models have Wi-Fi 6E, providing twice as fast download rates as the M2-powered models.

The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are only available with the standard M3 CPU. However, the 13-inch MacBook Air offers the option of an 8-core or 10-core GPU, while the 15-inch model comes exclusively with a 10-core configuration. The base versions of both capacities come with 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage. However, you can expand both models up to 24GB of unified memory and 2TB of storage at an additional cost. Midnight, Starlight, Space Grey, and Silver are the available colour options.

Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Airs are now available directly from Apple's website, starting at £1,099 and £1,299, respectively.

KitGuru says: For most, the smaller and more portable version should be good enough, offering a decent display and performance for everyday tasks. For those who spend all day working on their laptop and don't like working with an external monitor, the 15-inch MacBook Air is probably the way to go.

In recent years, Apple has made the decision to move away from x86 processors from partners like Intel, instead choosing to develop its own ARM-based processors for Macs and MacBooks, with production/fabrication handled by TSMC.

Apple will reportedly be one of TSMC's first customers for its new 2nm process node, otherwise known as N2. South Korean site, gammaburst (via Techpowerup), found evidence of this on LinkedIn after scrolling through profiles for unintentional tech leaks. As it turns out, at least one Apple engineer confirmed work on 2nm chip designs on their profile. This same Apple employee also worked with TSMC's 5nm and 3nm designs.

This news shouldn't come as a surprise, as Apple has always tried to be at the forefront of the nanometre race. The company has partnered with TSMC many times over the years to produce chips for the iPhone, iPad, and now, Macs and MacBooks.

TSMC's N2 node is expected to offer a 10 to 15 percent performance-per-watt improvement over the previous N3 node. The current generation of Apple M-series processors uses TSMC's N3 node. With that in mind, Apple is likely looking to shift to 2nm designs for its M4 chip, which will debut in next generation Mac products.

KitGuru Says: Apple has impressed greatly with its M-series ARM-based processors, which appear to have replaced Intel CPUs without any complaints from the wider Mac audience, except perhaps those who liked to dual-boot with Windows.

Call of Duty: Mobile has been a huge success for the first-person shooter franchise, with the free-to-play game having amassed more than 500 million downloads since its release back in 2019. That said, we have been waiting for the game’s successor for quite some time now. Built using the mainline release’s IW Engine, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is finally launching in March.

As reported by CharlieIntel, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is set to arrive on Android as well as iOS on the 21st of March. As is in the game’s name, this mobile title is primarily built as a battle royale experience, with the console versions of Verdanslk and Rebirth Island both being available to drop into.

Impressively, the Verdansk map will support 120 players with Rebirth Island going up to 48.

Interestingly, Warzone Mobile will also include a few multiplayer maps, namely Shipment, Shoot House and Scrapyard – all of which will feature player, weapon and Battle Pass cross-progression with Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone proper.

Last but certainly not least, Activision confirmed that Warzone Mobile will feature controller support – something which is severely lacking in the current COD Mobile.

It’s been a long time coming, but Call of Duty Warzone Mobile is finally almost here. Hopefully the game is translated well for the platform.

All the way back in 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its iOS App Store in response to efforts by Epic to circumvent the company’s store fees. 3 and a half years later, it seems the two companies have found common ground, with Apple finally unbanning Epic’s developer account.

Apple recently updated many of its terms and services, allowing for game streaming services to come to the iOS platform, alongside a whole host of other EU-mandated changes. This will allow Epic Games to bring Fortnite back to the platform and then some.

Following immediate confirmation that Fortnite will return to iPhones later this year, Epic Games have now announced the next big step towards its return, with the Fortnite creator taking to Twitter to say:

“We are bringing more opportunities to developers across all platforms and we’re so excited about what’s to come.… including bringing the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe. Dev account secured, let’s go!”

Adding his own personal thoughts on this recent change, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney replied, saying “I'll be the first to acknowledge a good faith move by Apple amidst our cataclysmic antitrust battle, in granting Epic Games Sweden AB a developer account for operating Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe under the Digital Markets Act.”

While it seems as though for now the return of Epic Games to iOS will be limited to Europe, after almost 4 years this marks a major step in bringing one of the most popular games currently back to Apple users. Hopefully the iPhone maker chooses to expand its latest terms and services globally.

The post xCloud game streaming not coming to iOS despite App Store changes first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Thanks to the recent passing of the Digital Markets act in the EU, Apple has had its hand forced into opening up its iOS App Store. One of the biggest changes as a result is that app developers can now with greater ease bring cloud-based game streaming services to iPhones and iPad. Unfortunately for Xbox fans, Microsoft’s streaming solution will not come to the platform, with Xbox Head Phil Spencer claiming “there's not room for us to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS.”

Following the announcement that Microsoft is set to bring 4 of its Xbox titles to other platforms, Tom Warren (via The Verge) sat down with Xbox head Phil Spencer to discuss these recent announcements and more. When asked “is there room for Xbox Cloud Gaming now on iOS” following the recent changes to Apple’s App Store policies, Spencer claimed:

“There’s not room for us to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS. I think the proposal that Apple put forward — and I thought Sarah Bond’s comments on this were right on — doesn’t go far enough to open up. In fact, you might even say they go the opposite direction in some way, but they definitely don’t go far enough to open up competition on the world’s largest gaming platform.”

The Head of Xbox continued, “We will continue to work with regulators, and Apple and Google, to create a space for alternative storefronts. I’m a big fan of how Windows works, and you’ve got a Microsoft Store on Windows, you’ve got Steam, you’ve got the Epic Games Store, you’ve got GOG. You have alternatives, and I think alternative ways for people to buy things creates goodness for consumers and creators. I think the largest platform for gamers, which is mobile, should have the same.”

While this statement does stray from Microsoft’s stated goal of making every screen an Xbox, it is quite clear based on Spencer’s wording that the plan is to bring an Xbox App Store to the platform eventually, allowing them to maximise the amount of revenue/profit they can amass. That said, we will simply have to wait and see.

Kicking things off with a look at the design of the Aorus 16X, Gigabyte has kept things pretty understated here. The lid is left almost completely bare save for the Aorus logo and some branding in the upper corner, while you may note there is a very subtle blue-ish hint which I think is a lovely touch. Once turned on there is some RGB lighting on the rear of the machine, but otherwise this is a fairly laid-back design. It's also relatively slender for a gaming machine, coming in at 27mm thick and weighing 2.3 KG.

The lid is made of metal and feels solid, with only a small amount of flex in the screen if you put pressure on both corners (though we obviously don't recommend that!) The inside deck and underside are made from plastic, but it still feels very solid with very little flex in the main body of the machine. Sure, it would have been nice to have an all-aluminium chassis like the MacBook or Razer Blade units, but for the price we can't really complain.

Opening the lid give us a closer look at the keyboard. While the unit I have is a US layout with half-height enter key, Gigabyte assures me UK buyers will get a more familiar ISO layout, but that's the only other difference between my sample and final retail models. The keyboard itself is fine, it's fairly standard laptop scissor-switch fare, while the RGB lighting is customisable in Gigabyte's Control Center software.

The trackpad is even better to use, being nice and large but very smooth with satisfying buttons. I wouldn't game with it, but for browsing the web or any general usage tasks, it is more than good enough. A 1080p webcam also comes built into the top bezel, which isn't the best quality but is acceptable for any video meetings you may have to sit through.

All display tests conducted utilising Portrait Displays' Calman Ultimate software. All results shown relative to the sRGB colour space and D65 target colour balance.

Below that we find the 16in 2560×1600 display, a 16:10 aspect ratio which means there's a bit of extra vertical estate compared to a more typical 16:9 screen. Gigabyte doesn't specify what panel type is used, but it appears to be an IPS-type manufactured by BOE. Gigabyte only claims up to 400 nits but I saw over 550 in my testing at 100% brightness, with a contrast ratio of 1321:1 which is typical of modern IPS displays. Gamut came in a bit below the claimed 100% sRGB coverage however, as I saw 95% coverage in my tests.

Greyscale performance is good though, with an average deltaE of 2.81, though the colour balance is slightly warm, averaging 6116K. Gamma is also a touch high across the board, averaging 2.3, and while I couldn't find any option to tweak this, I did ask Gigabyte if this might be possible. Colour accuracy is another strong point of the display as we saw an average dE of 2.71 and a maximum of 4.84, indicating decent factory calibration. For gaming too, the 165Hz refresh rate delivers a fluid experience with decent response times on offer.

As for the I/O, all the ports are split between the left and right sides. The left side is home to the power input, Ethernet, HDMI 2.1 video output, one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A, and one Type-C port that supports Thunderbolt 4, USB, DP 1.4 and PD 3.0. The right side features another two USB 3.2 Gen2 ports – one being Type-A and the other Type-C, along with a microSD slot and combo audio jack. I think this is a decent selection, two type-A ports on a modern laptop is acceptable I think, my only slight quibble is microSD instead of a full-sized version which is much more common for photo and video work, but it's good enough overall.

Internally we also have a few things to note. The first is the large 99.2WHr battery, and then we get two M.2 SSDs. These are labelled ‘AG450E', which indicates they are Aorus Gen4 5000E drives, and there's a pair of 1TB units in the 16X. We can also see the two 16GB DDR5 SO-DIMM modules from Samsung, rated at 5600MHz, alongside an Intel BE200 WiFi 7 M.2 card. I have no real issues with the internal layout, other than the fact that both M.2 and memory slots are already occupied, meaning users will have to swap out the existing hardware to make any upgrades to the storage or memory. It's not the end of the world, just something to be aware of.

Lastly, just confirming the core spec of the machine with CPU-Z and GPU-Z, the processor is Intel's Raptor Lake Refresh i9-14900HX, offering eight P-cores and sixteen E-cores, with a supposed 55W power budget but we'll talk about that on the next page! 32GB of Samsung DDR5 is supplied, rated at 5600MHz, with 46-45-45-89 timings. Graphics horsepower is provided by the RTX4070 Laptop chip, configured with a 95-140W power budget.

While the heyday of skateboarding video games may be behind us, EA is currently looking to revamp the genre, bringing back its much-loved Skate series in a new way. Said to be coming to PC, consoles and mobile devices, the free-to-play title looks to feature full crossplay and cross progression across the board – including between mobile and consoles.

Ahead of its still indeterminate release date, EA has been playtesting Skate publicly, allowing fans to get a taste of the game ahead of its official release. As part of the latest testing stage, the team announced and released an early version of the game for mobile – revealing that Skate will include full crossplay and cross progression.

While a majority of newly released games feature crossplay/cross progression, very few titles manage to offer the same on mobile, typically releasing a bespoke version for the portable platform – meaning no cross compatibility.

Fortunately, it seems as though the mobile version of Skate will be an accurate representation of the console/PC experience – so much so that players can freely switch between platforms with all their progress seamlessly carrying over.

In the wake of Capcom bringing Resident Evil 4 Remake and RE Village to iPhones (as well as Kojima releasing Death Stranding on iOS), it is clear that developers are paying much greater attention to the mobile platform. Hopefully this is the start of the smartphone gaming renaissance.

Earlier this month, we reported on a rumour claiming that SEGA are preparing to launch a Sonic the Hedgehog themed Fall Guys-like experience for mobile devices. The leaker has since returned with even more claims, revealing that the publisher is in fact working on 3 separate Sonic games for the platform.

Following on from the leak earlier this month claiming that “this year, a new Sonic spin-off title will be released for mobile [whose] gameplay elements will be similar to Fall Guys.” notable SEGA/ATLUS leaker ‘MbKKssTBhz5’ returned with even more Sonic news, taking to Twitter to say:

“A Sonic Chao game and new Sonic sports title are both currently in development for mobile devices,” adding that “the Sonic Chao title will be exclusive to Netflix. The Sonic sports title will be on Apple Arcade.”

As mentioned previously, the Fall Guys-like title will not be limited to any service, and will instead be made available directly through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store “at the beginning of summer.”

Sonic has always had a notable presence on mobile, with a number of the Blue Blur’s free-to-play efforts surpassing 100 million downloads on Android alone. Hopefully these upcoming titles offer quality experiences.

All the way back in 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its iOS App Store in response to efforts by Epic to circumvent the company’s store fees. 3 and a half years later and the ever-popular battle royale game is finally returning to the iPhone “later this year.”

Apple recently updated many of its terms and services, allowing for game streaming services to come to the iOS platform, alongside a whole host of other EU-mandated changes. This will allow Epic Games to bring Fortnite back to the platform, with them taking to Twitter to say:

“Remember Fortnite on iOS? How bout we bring that back. Later this year Fortnite will return in Europe on iOS through the @EpicGames Store. (shoutout DMA – an important new law in the EU making this possible). @Apple, the world is watching.”

Fortnite was more popular than ever when it was removed from the Apple App Store back in 2020. Since then however, the game has only continued to grow – meaning it will be highly interesting to see how iOS users react when Fortnite does finally return to the platform.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this new law? Are you excited by the changes? Will Epic Games make a big deal about it when it does return? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Over the past few years, we have seen a rise in the number of game streaming services, including but not limited to Microsoft’s xCloud and Nvidia’s GeForce Now. Unfortunately, Apple has for years stood in the way of these services coming to its iOS platform – until now.

Making the announcement on their developer website, the trillion dollar company said “Today, Apple is introducing new options for how apps globally can deliver in-app experiences to users, including streaming games and mini-programs. Developers can now submit a single app with the capability to stream all of the games offered in their catalog.”

They continue, “Apps will also be able to provide enhanced discovery opportunities for streaming games, mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and plug-ins that are found within their apps.”

The full details on exactly how this works and the extent of its support can be found HERE. but in essence it seems as though the company is finally fully embracing such streaming services. Apple caught heat back in 2020 for their response to the rise in game streaming on mobile – heavily gimping the service on iOS and making it essentially useless.

It is therefore highly exciting to see that iOS users can finally stream games to their iPhones/iPads using a native and official app. Hopefully the App Store only continues to open up further.

Next week, Death Stranding Director’s Cut will arrive on Apple’s latest iPhones, marking one of the first AAA titles to be ported to mobile platforms. In anticipation of its release, the mobile controller hardware maker Backbone has announced a limited edition Death Stranding themed USB-C controller.

Making the announcement on their website, mobile accessory maker Backbone said “For Backbone’s first-ever game collaboration, we’ve partnered with the legendary Kojima Productions to bring you the Backbone One – DEATH STRANDING Limited Edition controller.”

They continue, “This collaboration commemorates the release of DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT for iOS. The Backbone One controller features custom product and packaging designs that blend the innovative design of the Backbone One with the artistic vision of Hideo Kojima and his award-winning title, DEATH STRANDING.”

In an interesting move, all purchases of the limited edition controller will come with a free copy of Death Stranding for iOS (which will cost $39.99 at launch – though is $19.99 currently). The Backbone One is one of the most popular mobile USB controllers and following the release of the PlayStation Edition, it is exciting to see more unique and themed controllers on their way.

Back in June of last year, Hideo Kojima announced that the award-winning open world ‘strand-type’ game Death Stranding would be coming to Apple’s Mac platform. This was later followed up by the reveal that the game would also be coming to the latest iPhone models. Initially intended to release late last year, Death Stranding has now gotten an official iOS release date,

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Kojima Productions said “DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT, the definitive version of the genre-defying action game directed by Hideo Kojima and starring Norman Reedus, makes the trek onto Apple devices on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. The game will be available on iPhone 15 Pro models powered by the A17 Pro chip and every iPad and Mac with M-series chips.”

The game will cost $39.99 at launch, but during the pre-order period you can get the title for 50% off, bringing it down to just $19.99 – a great deal for what is arguably one of the most unique AAA games of the past generation.

Death Stranding marks the 3rd AAA game to come to Apple’s latest iPhones, with Resident Evil Village and RE4 Remake coming out late last year. With each of those titles taking a different approach to graphical and performance options, it will be interesting to see how Death Stranding’s settings are presented when the game launches in a week’s time.

Plants vs Zombies is a classic lane-based tower defence game which released back in 2009 to a great deal of success. Since then, the game has gotten one sequel and multiple spin-offs. Going back to its roots however, PVZ3 will once again see players defending Neighborville from a swarm of zombies. While the game’s official launch is still a ways away, those in the UK can get their hands on PvZ3 right now.

Taking to their blog, the team at PopCap announced the official soft launch for Plants vs Zombies 3, saying “Welcome to the neighborhood! We’re beyond thrilled to announce that Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Zomburbia has soft launched! Players in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia, Philippines, and the Republic of Ireland will have early access, with more countries coming at a later date.”

PopCap had engaged in a bunch of limited testing throughout 2022 and 2023, but today marks the first time that anyone can hop into the 3rd entry of this classic series – assuming you live in one of the applicable countries.

While the first Plants vs Zombies was somewhat of a phenomenon, PvZ2 saw some backlash back when it was released due to the game’s overabundance of microtransactions. With PvZ3 seemingly being exclusive to mobile platforms, hopefully the game does not overindulge in these practices once the game fully releases.

Following a solid 10 years of less-than-stellar Sonic releases, the Blue Blur has had somewhat of a resurgence as of late – with the likes of Sonic Frontiers reinventing the series and the live action Sonic films releasing to great success. SEGA looks set to keep the momentum going with a Fall Guys-like Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off.

As reported by a notable SEGA/ATLUS leaker, “This year, a new Sonic spin-off title will be released for mobile. The gameplay elements will be similar to Fall Guys.”

Sonic has had quite a few games released onto mobile platforms over the years. That said, recently we have seen SEGA putting a greater emphasis on bringing high quality games to the platform with the recently-released Sonic dream Team for Apple Arcade.

Unlike Dream Team, this upcoming game will reportedly be coming to both iOS and Android, meaning it should not be limited to any particular subscription service.

SEGA making a Fall Guys Sonic game is interesting, as the Blue Blur is already playable in the actual Fall Guys – well, a Sonic costume is anyways. As with many of SEGA’s mobile efforts, this could wind up being massive for the company, or it could fall completely under the radar. We will have to wait and see.

Following the success of Persona 5, ATLUS have been pushed into the limelight, with the studio tackling new games, IPs and platforms. According to one insider, ATLUS is currently working on multiple games for Netflix.

As shared by a notable ATLUS leaker, the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei creators are reportedly “developing multiple titles for the Netflix mobile game platform,” with the insider adding that “One of these titles are related to Shin Megami Tensei series.”

Over the past few years Netflix has accumulated a rather healthy library of games on its service, ranging from ports of console games to titles based on their own original shows. As mentioned by the leaker, at least one of these titles will be based on the studio’s popular Shin Megami Tensei series.

That said, it is currently unknown whether this title will be developed specifically for Netflix or if ATLUS are working on porting some of their pre-existing titles – perhaps earlier entries in the series.

While Netflix’s game library does feature a decent amount of shovelware, the streaming service has put greater emphasis on bringing quality titles to the service over time. Just some of the best include Death’s Door; TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge; Before Your Eyes; Dead Cells; OXENFREE; World of Goo and the recently-added GTA Trilogy. Hopefully ATLUS’ efforts are going towards something substantive.

Delving into the mobile gaming ecosystem can sometimes feel like a foreign experience for those who mainly engage with the medium through consoles or PC. While there are some familiar faces, 2023’s top-grossing mobile games have now been revealed – showcasing a number of surprise additions.

As reported by ‘mobilegamer.biz’, analyst Appmagic data has revealed the top 10 highest grossing mobile games for 2023. While some of the included entries come as a bit of a surprise, what isn’t surprising is the fact that all of the featured games are free-to-play. With that, the full list is as follows:

  1. Honor of Kings ($1.48bn)
  2. PUBG Mobile ($1.14bn)
  3. Candy Crush Saga ($956.9m)
  4. Genshin Impact ($943.8m)
  5. Roblox ($868.6m)
  6. Royal Match ($835.2m)
  7. Coin Master ($728.7m)
  8. Honkai: Star Rail ($659.1m)
  9. Monopoly Go ($645m)
  10. Gardenscapes ($605.7m)

It is worth noting that games such as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and Roblox – which all have console/PC counterparts – only had their mobile revenue included in the calculations.

Even so, it is interesting to see the differences and disparity between the top 10 entries – in terms of age, monetisation and consumer unfriendliness. Hopefully come this time next year we see more positive practices being rewarded in the mobile gaming space.

At CES today, Razer unveiled its latest round of Blade gaming laptops. The Blade 16 is the world's first laptop to feature a 16-inch OLED display with 240Hz refresh rate, but that isn't the only standout here. There is an even more powerful Blade 18 model on the way, and it is the world's first laptop to feature an 18-inch 4K/165Hz display.

The Blade 16 ships with an OLED display, or you can opt for a display with Dual Mode technology, allowing you to switch between 4K at 120Hz and 1080p at 240Hz. This way, you can utilise the higher resolution for productivity and media viewing and then switch to FHD at 240Hz for ultra smooth gaming.

The new Blade 16 also boasts powerful hardware under the hood. The laptop can be equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and up to an RTX 4090 GPU, which could make this a good desktop replacement candidate while keeping a fairly slim profile.

The new Blade 14 is a Ryzen-powered laptop, utilising one of AMD's new ‘Ryzen AI' series of laptop processors, which feature an NPU to aid with AI workloads. In this case, you'll get one of AMD's best with the Ryzen 9 8945HS. On the graphics side, the Blade 14 can be shipped with up to an RTX 4070 and on the display side, you'll be getting a QHD/240Hz panel.

The new Blade 16 is available starting today, starting at £3,099.99. The Blade 14 will be going up for pre-order on the 23rd of January but no price has been announced yet.

The Razer Blade 18 isn't launching until later this year but it is aiming to impress. It will ship with a 4K/165Hz display and offer Thunderbolt 5 for connecting extra storage, high-resolution displays, docks or other devices. A specific CPU and GPU combo has not yet been announced, which could mean that we'll be seeing yet-to-be-announced hardware under the hood.

KitGuru Says: We'll have to wait and see the final price tag for the Blade 14 but with the Blade 16 at over £3000, we expect the Blade 14 to be pretty expensive.

CES is coming up and as expected, a slew of new laptops are due to be announced, with much of the marketing set to revolve around AI functionality. As part of this push, Microsoft is now working with OEMs to ensure that new Windows laptops ship with a new keyboard key to launch the Windows 11 Copilot feature.

Copilot has been available to Windows 11 users for a while now, acting as a new AI-based digital assistant for tasks, similar to ChatGPT but not quite as clever just yet. As more professionals and creators begin to leverage AI tools in their daily tasks, Microsoft is banking on the Copilot key being a useful feature for new laptop buyers.

Some of the newly announced Dell XPS laptops will feature the Copilot key on the keyboard and we can expect plenty of other OEMs to do the same thing. We'll see just how prevalent the Copilot key will be soon, as more laptops are announced and shown off at CES, which kicks off on the 8th of January.

AI will continue to be a key focus for Microsoft this year, particularly as the company works towards Windows 12, which will aim to “blur the lines” between local and cloud-assisted computing. Windows 12 is rumoured to be heading our way later this year. If true, we should have some solid details on the new OS before the summer.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Having a Copilot key doesn't necessarily need to be an issue, but if it is placed in a position where you may accidentally press it often, then it will be viewed as an annoyance and likely drive users away. Fortunately, there will likely be ways to disable it if needed.

CES is set to kick off shortly and Dell is eager to get its new product announcements rolling. Ahead of the event, Dell has announced its new range of XPS laptops, designed with minimalist principles while trying to maximise performance.

The InfinityEdge display on the new XPS laptops immediately stands out and will be available in an OLED Touch option too. Each of the new 2024 XPS laptops ships with an InfinityEdge display with variable refresh rate support, high-resolution options and support for features like Dolby Vision. On the audio side, Dell has opted for a quad-speaker design with Dolby Atmos support. Above the display, you'll find a Full HD webcam for clear images during video calls.

Under the hood, Dell is using Intel's new Core Ultra processors, which also support AI acceleration. As a result, these laptops will be positioned as productivity and creativity enhancers with the ability to leverage generative AI tools outside of the cloud. All the new XPS laptops will also ship with Windows 11 as well as an enhanced battery with ExpressCharge tech, allowing the laptop to charge up to 80 percent in one hour.

The XPS 16 will be the flagship, offering up to RTX 4070 graphics for the GPU. The smaller XPS 14 will be limited to an RTX 4050 at best and it seems that the XPS 13 will rely on integrated graphics.

The new Dell XPS range will be available soon, starting in the US at $1,299 for the XPS 13, $1699 for the XPS 14 and $1899 for the XPS 16.

Tuxedo Computers, a specialist in Linux notebooks, has decided to launch what should be the first mass-produced all-AMD Linux gaming laptop, the Sirius 16, powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS APU and Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU.

The laptop has a sleek all-aluminium chassis with configurable RGB keys, providing a “sleek gamer look.” The Sirius 16 is Tuxedo's first all-AMD setup, and the company has ensured that the system is optimised for performance by allowing the Phoenix APU's maximum TDP rating of 54W sustained (or 80W CPU-only turbo) and retaining the RDNA3 GPU at its rated 120W TGP under full CPU+GPU loads. The laptop also has vents on both sides and the back of the chassis, and about half of the bottom panel is open intake for the dual-fan cooling system.

The Sirius 16 features a 16.1-inch QHD display with a 165Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB colour gamut coverage, making it appropriate for various professional tasks and multimedia consumption. The laptop has a full-size per-key programmable RGB keyboard and a colour-adjustable light strip down the front edge of the chassis.

The laptop includes two M.2 SSD slots under the bottom panel and two DDR5 SODIMM slots with up to 96GB of capacity. It also has one 40Gbps USB-C 4.0 Gen3x2 port, one 40Gbps USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, two 10Gbps USB-A 3.2 ports, one HDMI 2.1 connector, an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet socket, and separate headphone and microphone 3.5mm audio jacks.

Tuxedo claims the laptop offers up to 10 hours of battery life with the lowest display brightness settings, wireless turned off, and no programmable lighting enabled. Rated battery life reduces to 6 hours at medium brightness, with wireless turned on, and under modest “office work” demand. The laptop has a 230W power brick and an 80Wh changeable battery mounted within the chassis.

The pre-orders for the Tuxedo Sirius 16 have already begun, with a starting price of €1700 when equipped with 16GB DDR5-5600 and a 500GB Samsung SSD. The company expects to ship devices within the next several weeks, with a projected mid-December 2023 delivery deadline.

The Apple Vision Pro headset was announced earlier this year and was initially planned for an early 2024 launch. However, Apple is apparently delaying the release a little bit as it continues to figure out its distribution plans.

Bloomberg's Apple reporter, Mark Gurman, has published his latest newsletter, in which we learn that while the Vision Pro was initially thought to be releasing in January 2024, the date has now slipped to “sometime around March”.

As previously mentioned by Apple, the device will only be available in the US to start off with. To pick one up in an actual Apple Store, you'll also have to book an appointment to make your purchase. Online availability is also expected though and Apple will be keeping stock of different headband sizes and prescription lenses to ensure buyers get the exact specs they need to use the device comfortably.

The Apple Vision Pro will run an all-new operating system, known as VisionOS and will offer both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality capabilities.

KitGuru Says: Priced at $3,499 and up, this will be a niche device but as with most Apple products, there will be a pretty significant market of enthusiasts looking to get their hands on one at the beginning. The real test here will be the amount of app support the device gets and how much those apps may end up costing. Unlike on iOS where the majority of apps are free, we would expect things to be reversed for the Vision Pro, with more software carrying a price tag.

Due to new regulations in the EU, Apple will soon be allowing app side-loading on iOS devices. This means iPhone users will be able to freely install apps on their devices without going through the App Store directly. Now, we have a good idea of when this change will come into place.

The European Union's Digital Markets Act went into effect back in late 2022, requiring platform holders to open up their platforms. While side-loading is already possible on Android devices, it has not been available on iOS, outside of allowing developers to install beta apps for testing. However, this will change in 2024.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Apple will introduce a “highly controlled system” that will allow users to install apps hosted outside of the App Store on iOS. Previous rumours claimed this change could arrive with iOS 17.2 but Gurman's new report contradicts this, claiming that the update will arrive in the first half of 2024.

While Apple complied with EU rules to bring USB-C to the iPhone worldwide, it is possible that side-loading apps will only be made available within the EU but we have yet to get full confirmation on Apple's plans. If current information is accurate, all will be made clear in the coming months, possibly ahead of Apple's annual WWDC event in June.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Many users will argue that one of the strengths of iOS is its highly optimised environment and the curated nature of the App Store. However, neither of these things should be hampered by the introduction of side-loading. Now we'll just have to wait and see how Apple's ‘controlled' solution will work and if it will be available worldwide, or just within EU countries.
