Elgato is a name synonymous with streaming and content creation. The company has released some unique products that have gone on to dominate the streaming world, and their latest webcam, the Facecam Pro, was the first in the world to support 4K 60fps capture. Coming with a hefty £300 price tag, can this premium webcam rival the performance of a fully fledged camera like the Sony ZV1?

Pros:

  • True 4K 60fps video capture.
  • Auto and manual focus.
  • Great software and expansive controls.

Cons:

  • Expensive.
  • Arguably overkill for most webcam users.

KitGuru says: The Elgato Facecam Pro is, without a doubt, the best performing webcam we've ever tested. The amount of adjustability and almost ‘DSLR-like' settings help with dialling in great looking video. For the target customer, streamers and content creators, there is not much out there, aside from a ‘proper' camera that will match the Facecam Pro. However, for most people, this level of webcam will be overkill.

  • Compatible with Windows 10 or later and MAC OS 10.5 and later (including M1).

The Avermedia DualCam retail price was announced at £149.99 and you can get it HERE.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

Pros

  • Interesting design giving users the flexibility to use the webcam how they like
  • Privacy shutters on both cameras
  • Detachable 2m USB C cable is long and can be replaced if needed
  • Includes a handy tripod for desktop usage
  • Low profile monitor mount clip doesn’t overhang too much on screens.
  • The right camera has impressive low light performance with an f/2 aperture.
  • The free includes software offers many ways to customise your DualCam for your needs and is easy to learn.

Cons

  • Both cameras suffer excessive motion blur in low light due to automatic shutter speed
  • Lack of 60fps for smoother streaming
  • The left camera is noticeably narrow in field of view and also suffers from worse picture quality compared to the right camera
  • The left microphone suffered a buzz in my unit
  • The included tripod could be taller (like the one used in the website images).
  • Some questionable software features like “skin lightening” – should be removed.

KitGuru says: The Avermedia DualCam is a promising new product offering creators exciting and intuitive ways to stream. Unfortunately, the image quality is a bit disappointing in the left camera with only the right camera offering good quality for streaming in 2021 and beyond.  A lack of 60fps is also rather noticeable in low light causing an excessive amount of blurring in some situations. Luckily, the free Camengine Software gives users different ways to customise their DualCam to take advantage of the better camera.

Elgato is a streaming and content creation giant, making all kinds of solutions and handy bits of hardware and software for creators. The company now wants to appeal to the masses by entering the webcam scene with an all-in-one solution. The Elgato Facecam has just launched with a hefty price of £189.99. With a Sony STARVIS CMOS sensor, fully glass 24mm equivalent f2.4 lens and uncompressed 1080p60 feed… Is it any good?

Specifications:

  • Elgato Prime Lens (all-glass)
  • Fixed Focus Range 30 – 120cm
  • Aperture – f/2.4
  • Focal Length – 24mm full-frame equivalent
  • Field of View – 82 degrees

  • Detachable cable – USB 3.0 to USB C
  • Mounting options with ¼ inch thread
  • Dimensions: 79 x 48 x 58mm without mount
  • Weight: 96g without privacy cap and mount

You can purchase the Elgato Facecam, from Overclockers UK for £189.95, HERE!

Pros:

  • Excellent uncompressed image quality.
  • The best webcam software out there.
  • Fully custom controls that can be saved onto the webcam itself.
  • Great lowlight capabilities.
  • Lightweight.

Cons:

  • Pricey.
  • Not enough shutter speed options for 50Hz regions.
  • No upgrade path like a dedicated camera option.

KitGuru says: The uncompressed 60fps 1080p feed is sharp, colours are represented well and the field of view is nice and wide, the software is absolutely brilliant, being able to have ultimate control over every aspect of the camera and to save settings internally to the camera is exactly what you’d want as a video creator. We’re going to say it, this is the best webcam we’ve ever tested, despite the shutter speed niggle that we hope Elgato will fix with a software update.

Samsung has a new patent that shows a smartphone equipped with an array of six camera lenses. What makes the patent special is that the cameras are capable of tilting to capture a scene or object with greater detail.

Each year brings new innovations that further advances the functionalities available in smartphones. One area where smartphone manufacturers seem to have been extra diligent is when it comes to cameras – nowadays it's not unusual for phones come with three or more cameras. What is unusual, though, is to see a smartphone that has tilting cameras. However, according to a recently released patent from Samsung, tilting cameras may be introduced into the world of smartphones in the not too distant future.

Samsung's design shows an array of six cameras, five wide-angle lenses and one telephoto lens. The added tilt functionality makes it possible for the cameras to work together to create a wider angle, resulting in images with greater detail – the function is expected to be especially useful for panoramic views.

The patent from Samsung is called “Apparatus and method for operating multiple cameras for digital photography”, and although the patent application was filed last year, it has only recently been made available to the public. Whether or not we will see the technology implemented in a commercially available smartphone any time is another matter entirely, but it is good to know smartphone technology is continuing to push the boundaries of its photography.

The full patent can be examined HERE.

Intel has introduced the RealSense Depth Camera D455, offering twice the range and increased performance compared to its predecessor. The RealSense Depth Camera D455 is designed to operate in “new frontiers of computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence” and can be used for “collision avoidance in automobiles and drones, or completion of household chores”.

The first iteration of Intel's RealSense camera was introduced back in 2014 and since then the technology has come a long way. The Intel RealSense Depth Camera D455 is a stereo-based depth device that, according to the tech giant, achieves “twice the performance of previous generation models”. The optimal operating range for the D455 is up 6 meters, and Intel also states “the D455 includes global shutters for the depth and RGB sensors to improve correspondence between the two different data streams.”

According to Sagi BenMoshe, Intel Corporate Vice President and general manager of the Intel RealSense Group, “the Intel RealSense family of products now offers developers more choices. The D455 expands the capabilities of our stereo camera line allowing us to address a wider range of applications with longer range use cases and allowing users to design solutions that best meet their needs.”

The Intel RealSense Depth Camera D455 comes with a price tag of $239 and is available to pre-order now. Additional information can be found on Intel's product page HERE.

Samsung has announced its new ISOCELL GN1 camera sensor that uses “Dual Pixel” technology, offering faster auto-focusing and brighter images. The sensor also utilises “Tetracell” technology for better low-light photography.

Samsung recently unveiled the new ISOCELL GN1, a 50-megapixel image sensor. The ISOCELL GN1 is Samsung’s first image sensor that comes with both Dual Pixel and Tetracell technologies.

Samsung explains that the “Dual Pixel technology places two photodiodes side-by-side within a single pixel that can receive light from different angles for phase detection”. The Dual Pixel technology makes it possible for one pixel to gather light information from different angles to enhance the image quality. Samsung also provides a software algorithm that uses said light information to produce a result that, according to Samsung, has the same image quality as 100MP photos.

The Tetracell technology was developed with the aim to make photos clear, even in low-light conditions. Samsung explains that “by binning four pixel signals into one, Tetracell doubles the image sensor’s pixel size to 2.4μm and quadruples the light sensitivity to take brighter 12.5MP photographs.” So even though the resolution is lower when using the Tetracell technology, it makes for brighter and sharper images in low-light environments.

Considering some manufacturers, like Huawei, have already been using a similar approach for low-light photography, it will be interesting to see how Samsung's Tetracell implementation compares.

KitGuru says: How much do you care about the camera sensor when buying a smartphone? What are your thoughts on Samsung's ISOCELL GN1 camera sensor?

Formerly known as Pisofttech and manufacturer of panoramic camera hardware, Labpano has announced the launch of a new generation 360-degree panoramic camera. The Labpano Pilot One supports 8K VR photography, recording and 8K live streaming.

The Labpano Pilot One features three innovations inside a single device: Swiftbird which is a cloud-based live streaming solution, Pilot Open System allows developers to build apps and Pilot Tour is realtime V-SLAM positioning to provide precisely-positioned virtual tours.

Pilot One is the smallest 8K 360-degree camera on the market today, with dimensions measuring just 44mm x 44mm x 128mm and is packed with four high-end Sony image sensors and high precisions lenses, featuring an F2.28 aperture size. The Pilot One is equipped with a 3400mAh battery that supports two hours of continuous 8K recording or live streaming.

The camera is manufactured with an all-metal cuboid frame with arc edges for an elegant and robust appearance. The Labpano Pilot One aims to make 8K 360-degree live steaming simpler with an innovative new solution, Swiftbird 8K Cloud Live Streaming replaces the need for setting up bulky physical servers and heavy data change tasks that are usually required for the signal shift between regions. With Swiftbird 8K Live Streaming the user simply connects the camera to a network and can easily share 8K quality 360-degree real-time content.

Pilot Tour provides centimetre-level location accuracy, making it possible to create large-scale tours with images positioned automatically by using Labpano’s V-SLAM algorithm. While Pilot Open System is an operating system built for Android that allows users to build their own apps to control the camera, which means workflows can be customised to best suit the user’s unique needs. Pilot One also has a range of modular accessories that customers can purchase depending on their needs and the device is equipped with PilotSteady Stabilisation Technology that provides rock-solid image quality, even in harsh environments.

Modules and Accessories for the Pilot One include:

  • GPS module
  • 4G module
  • 5G module
  • Ambisonic Mic
  • Dive Housing
  • Waterproof Housing
  • Protective Case
  • Charging Grip

GoPro has announced it has started shipping a new device to light up your winter holidays. The GoPro Light Mod is a standalone waterproof light that is rechargeable and compatible with all GoPro mounts.

The new compact and powerful LED light will illuminate the scene or subject with a  wide and even brightness to provide crisp detail with sharp colours and enhanced footage. Alternatively, the Light Mod can be used as a convenient mountable or wearable light that utilises an existing array of GoPro camera mounts which are all compatible with the Light Mod.

GoPro’s Light mod can be used as a powerful headlamp via the GoPro head strap, as a floating light with The Handler or as a belt light on the new GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip, GoPro has truly thought of it all with the Light Mod. Current users of GoPro devices will already own some of these accessories and new users will find them at affordable prices.

The GoPro Light Mod has four brightness levels to choose from and a strobe mode for signalling and visibility use. The Light Mod comes with a light diffuser that offers additional levels of creative control while reducing shadows and producing a more flattering light.

In addition to its standalone features, the GoPro Light Mod is the first of three HERO8 Black modular accessories that are designed to transform GoPro cameras into video production and vlogging powerhouses. Light Mod can be attached to HERO8 via the Media Mod which is a rugged wrap around frame with a built-in directional mic, capable of capturing crystal clear audio with reduced wind and ambient background noise.

Media Mod also includes an external 3.5mm microphone port and HDMI out to connect to a monitor. The GoPro Light Mod will be priced at £49.99 on release and is available in the US now. The device is expected to be rolled out globally in the coming weeks.

Intel has launched the new RealSense lidar camera, the L515 is the world’s smallest and most power-efficient lidar camera that is capable of capturing millions of depth points per second and features a new technology to create innovative ways to integrate lidar into smart devices.

RealSense experts have developed a revolutionary solid-state family of high-depth lidar cameras. The new Intel RealSense lidar camera L515 features unmatched depth quality and power-efficiency that is capable of generating 23 million accurate depth points per second, making it ideal for a whole host of scenarios.

“Intel RealSense technology is used to develop products that enrich people's lives by enabling machines and devices to perceive the world in 3D. With the L515 depth camera, we are excited to bring high-resolution lidar performance to markets previously inaccessible to this technology.” Said Sagi BenMoshe, corporate vice president, Intel RealSense Group.

Intel believes industries such as logistic could benefit from the L515’s high resolution and full scene preparation, companies looking for inventory management automation, will benefit from the L515’s precise volumetric measurement of products that will always provide accurate inventory states.

Lidar is a remote sensing technology that measures the distance to objects and targets using a combination of lasers and receivers. Intel RealSense technology is different because it uses an advanced, miniaturised micro-electro-mechanical mirror to scan the scene instead. This results in a reduction to the laser pulse power and provides the world’s smallest and most power-efficient high-resolution lidar.

In terms of accuracy and depth edge fidelity, the L515 is in another league as it provides consistently high accuracy over a supported range of 0.25m – 9m and is capable of over 23 million depth pixel per second at a resolution of 1024 x 768 and 30 FPS. Other features of the Intel RealSense lidar L515 include an internal vision processor, motion blur artefact reduction and short photon-to-depth-latency, along with a built-in accelerometer, gyroscope and FHD RGB video camera.

The Intel RealSense lidar camera L515 is available for pre-order now and is priced at $349. For more information on the Intel RealSense lidar camera L515 family, visit the Intel RealSense website.

The smartphone market never slows down. As one device is released, another immediately enters the rumour mill with better specs and newer features. One rumour is concerning Samsung’s upcoming flagship for the first half of 2020, namely the Galaxy S11. The phone will allegedly come with a 108 megapixel sensor, which would make it by far the most megapixels seen on a smartphone camera.

Samsung announced a 108mp sensor back in August, in collaboration with Xiaomi. Leaked by the tipster ‘Ice universe’, they claim that “[t]he Galaxy S11 has a high probability of using a new 108MP sensor”. Whether they are referring to the sensor that was unveiled back in August is unknown, however it would make a great deal of sense for that to be the case.

The sensor is called the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, and is able to put its 100 million+ pixels to good use. While it’s true that megapixels aren’t the be all end all of camera technology, it does afford itself certain benefits. The sensor will allow for up to 6K video (6016 x 3384) to be shot at 30fps. Prior sensors have only been able to reach 4K.

Furthermore, the camera is able to sacrifice raw resolution for the sake of quality. The sensor can cut its resolution to 27 megapixels, combining 4 pixels in to one. This allows for greater low-light photography, which has become a point of focus for many smartphone manufacturers.

We won’t have to wait long to see what the sensor can do. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is purported to use the same 108 megapixel sensor. While camera software is just as important as camera hardware, it’ll be interesting regardless to see the potential benefits and improvements to the camera on a hardware level that’ll be arriving with the Samsung Galaxy S11.

KitGuru says: What do you think of a potential 108 megapixel camera for the Samsung Galaxy S11? Do you welcome the renewed focus that smartphone manufacturers are putting on its cameras, or could the efforts be better placed in a different department? Let us know down below.

With a rise in smart camera devices featuring higher resolutions driving the requirement for high speed, high capacity on-device storage in smart city environments, manufacturers are looking for solutions to optimise storage for video and AI analytics. Western Digital has addressed this by offering new WD Purple storage drives.

According to IHS Markit research, professional video surveillance is expected to grow from 140 million to 224 million worldwide between 2018 and 2023. Onboard storage requirements are due to follow this growth pattern by 17% per year. With 4k video becoming more common in these surveillance cameras, this illustrates a fast-growing demand for more high-performance storage.

Western Digital has launched the WD Purple SC QD101 Ultra Endurance microSD card that is specifically designed to meet the requirements of modern on-camera storage. The WD Purple SC QD101 features Western Digital’s advanced 96-layer 3D NAND technology, delivering a combination of ultra-endurance and high-performance storage with capacities up to 512GB.

The WD Purple microSD is designed for security system integrators and installers and includes a card health monitor that provides the ability to gauge the remaining endurance and pre-emptively service the card if required. The WD Purple SC QD101 microSD card is available in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 521GB capacities.

In addition, Western Digital has introduced the WD Purple 14TB HDD for a wide range of security systems. Like other devices in the Western Digital locker, WD Purple HDDs are designed for 24/7 always-on, high definition security surveillance systems and feature Western Digital’s AllFrame technology, which improves video capture by reducing errors, pixilation and video interruptions.

The 14TB WD Purple HDD is available now. The WD Purple SC QD101 microSD card is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2020.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: Even though the Western Digital Purple microSD cards are designed for professional security system cameras, they could also be used by mainstream consumers for video recording, which should provide excellent performance.

The post Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Blackmagic made some enormous promises when it announced the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with a combination of features that seemed almost too good to be true. The headline feature is 4K 60fps recording in a body that looks vaguely similar to the original Pocket Cinema Camera. The original BMPCC was limited to Full HD recording so it comes as no surprise the new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is slightly more bulky in the hand.

The main draw for new customers is likely to be the absurdly low price. We have found any number of outlets offering the BMPCC 4K body for around £1,200 which surely makes it the cheapest camera body on the market that offers 4k 60fps recording allied to a proper lens mount.

Note: if the above images are not displaying properly, you may need to disable Ad Block as it is known to interfere with our display code

Key features of Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

  • Full size 4/3 sized sensor with native 4096 x 2160 resolution sized sensor.
  • Compatible with extremely high quality Micro Four Thirds lenses.
  • Super wide 13 stops of dynamic range allows capture for high end feature film look.
  • Up to 25600 ISO for incredible low light performance.
  • Carbon fibre polycarbonate composite body which makes it lightweight, portable and durable.
  • Multi function grip for quick access to recording start/stop, still photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, power and more.
  • Built in SD, UHS-II and CFast card recorders.
  • USB-C expansion port allows longer duration recording directly to an external SSD or flash disk.
  • Standard open file formats compatible with popular NLE software such as 10-bit ProRes and 12 bit RAW.
  • Features full size HDMI output for monitoring with camera status graphic overlay.
  • Professional mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power for connecting to pro microphones.
  • 3.5mm audio jack, headphone jack, and locking DC 12 volt power connection.
  • Built in 5” LCD touchscreen allows accurate focus when shooting 4K.
  • LCD supports on screen overlays including status, histogram, focus peaking, and transport controls.
  • Records 4K images at up to 60 frames per second and windowed HD at up to 120 frames per second.
  • 3D LUTs can be applied for both monitoring and recording.
  • Blackmagic OS as used in URSA Mini and URSA Broadcast cameras.
  • 4th generation Blackmagic colour science.
  • Supports remote camera control via Bluetooth.
  • Includes full license for DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, color, visual effects and audio post production.

Full specification HERE.

Throughout our video we compared the BMPCC 4K with our daily driver Panasonic GH5. Both cameras use Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mounts, which meant we could swap lenses between the cameras to maintain a level playing field. In addition the two camera bodies cost a similar amount, although if you factor in the XLR connection provided by Blackmagic you could argue the BMPCC 4K saves you around £500.

While the two cameras have a certain amount in common we found the user experience was dramatically different. You navigate menus on BMPCC 4K using a massive 5-inch touch screen and the fact that the camera is dedicated to video work, rather than photos, changes its behaviour significantly.

We are sure that part of the difference is due to the dual native ISO 400 and 3,200 with the changeover at 1,250 and a maximum setting of 25,600. Anyone who has used a Panasonic MFT camera for video knows you start at ISO 800 and don’t dare go much higher than 1600, which can be severely limiting in low light.

The BMPCC could be used under a wider range of lighting conditions but balanced against that we found the white balance was quite peculiar. For example when we were working under 5500K lights and set the white balance to 5500K the image was practically sepia. There is an Auto White Balance function that delivers strange results so at every step of the way we selected a white balance setting that seemed correct by eye.

This looks like a classic example where you are meant to fix it in Post, preferably using DaVinci Resolve, however we much prefer the footage to look correct right out of the camera. On that subject, the set-up offers three distinct Dynamic Range settings. We ignored Film as we didn’t want to work with Log and after a trial run with the Extended Video setting (Rec709 colour space and Log gamma) we switched to Video which is Rec709.

When it comes to the flickering that we suffered under certain LED house lights, we did indeed try the 50Hz/60Hz setting and it made no difference to the result.

Beyond that the experience of using the BMPCC 4K was very interesting and the video we shot looked good. It was quite an eye-opener to see the sizes of the files we created as ProRes LT generates files fully 6x larger than the files that come out of the GH5. You can be sure you will burn through storage media with the BMPCC 4K and will also have to keep an eye on the condition of your battery as you are unlikely to make a Canon LP-E6 last a full hour.

Closing Thoughts

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is an impressive camera that packs 4K 60fps recording into a small body. It is worth emphasising the body is not as small as you might expect as it seems the word ‘Pocket’ means something different in Blackmagic-speak.

Once you get beyond that minor point you will see the BMPCC 4K comes with plenty of features: dual media slots for CFast 2.0 and SD card, a USB-C that can be used to connect a flash disk, dual native ISO, 13 stops of dynamic range, four built-in microphones, an XLR input with Phantom power and a massive 5-inch LCD touch screen.

That’s a lot of hardware for a very low price.

The big question is whether the BMPCC 4K fits your way of working. For example, if you work alone the fixed 5-inch screen is a limitation, but even if you work in a team you would doubtless find a tilting screen would make life easier when you raise or lower the camera. We found it frustrating that the Blackmagic Camera Control App is aimed at iPad users and ignores the Android user base.

The BMPCC 4K is ready to be rigged to suit your working environment, perhaps by adding a monitor, connecting mains power or hooking up external storage. That latter point is especially significant if you are shooting in RAW as you will need plenty of storage. We have no problem with customising your set-up to make the camera work exactly the way you want but the issue is that BMPCC 4K is very cheap and can be paired with a low cost lens, such as the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7.

You might argue that leaves you plenty of budget to buy a cage, handle, monitor, storage or batteries and in a sense you are correct. On the other hand we feel the sort of customer who is drawn to a camera by its low price is the least likely to shell out extra cash on accessories.

Having said all that, there is a significant difference between people who use cameras to take photos and people who make videos. When KitGuru started to push the video side of our reviews, your reviewer discovered that decent audio can add considerable complexity and cost to a camera such as Panasonic GH4 or GH5. The dividing line here is whether you consider the single mini jack you find on most DSLRs to be sufficient or whether you expect to use an XLR connection.

Even here we have nuanced feelings as it is clearly good news that BMPCC 4K includes an XLR with Phantom power, however it would be better to have dual inputs or the option of recording dual audio tracks where the second track is -12dBA as a back-up.

Our point is that Blackmagic has taken an endless series of decisions to arrive at the specification of the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and the end result is a camera that suits a specific type of user.

Clearly it helps if you have bought into the Blackmagic view of the world and are immersed in DaVinci Resolve. You may well feel the point-and-shoot DSLR approach is too basic and instead want to shoot in RAW or Log with a LUT on the camera.

In our video we highlight the use case of a student or budding cinematographer who is willing to put in the hours and the effort to get the results they desire. For those individuals we consider the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K to be an absolute jewel.

You can buy the BMPCC 4K for £1134 (body only) from Wex HERE.

Pros:

  • Very low price for a 4K 60fps camera.
  • Dual native ISO 400 and 3200.
  • Four built in microphones plus XLR with Phantom power.
  • Huge 5-inch LCD touch screen.
  • Dual slots for CFast 2.0 and SD cards plus USB-C flash disk.

Cons:

  • White balance behaves in a peculiar way.
  • 5-inch LCD touch screen has no movement.
  • Build quality feels plasticky.
  • You need to watch battery life carefully.
  • ProRes LT File sizes are six times larger than GH5 files. RAW files are huge.

KitGuru says: You have to work to get the best from the BMPCC 4K but the results are worth the effort.

The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was first announced back in April of this year, but last night in London the company held an official launch for the new camera. KitGuru was invited along, and we got to see some of the first projects shot using the Pocket 4K, as well as hear from some filmmakers who have been using the camera over the last few weeks.

There's been a lot of excitement in the camera world about the new Blackmagic Pocket 4K – or BMPCC 4K, as it is known. That's because it packs in a whole range of features into a comparatively tiny body – including its dual native ISO (up to 25,600!) support, large 5in touchscreen and a whole host of recording formats to choose from including Apple ProRes and CinemaDNG RAW.

At the launch event last night, various cinematographers and industry figures were present to see some of the first projects shot using the new Pocket 4K. We were shown four short films from filmmakers including Oli Brotherhood, Hugo van Dijke and Garth de Bruno Austin. I have to say, from the initial look we could get, some of the footage produced looks absolutely fantastic considering it is coming from a device that weighs less than 800g!

Simon Westland, part of Blackmagic Design's EMEA team, also interviewed the filmmakers to hear their initial thoughts on using the camera. It seems none of them had much time at all to get used to the Pocket 4K beforehand, but the intuitive design and quick learning curve means that it was not a problem. In particular, all three of the interviewees commented on just how good the footage looks straight out of the camera – they said that only a very slight colour grade needs to be applied as the in-camera colour science and dynamic range is just that good.

Other key features of the camera include:

  • Four Thirds 18.96x10mm sensor size
  • Active Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount
  • 13 stops of dynamic range
  • Dual native ISO of 400 and 3200
  • Shooting resolutions of 4096 x 2160 (4K DCI), 3840 x 2160 (Ultra HD), 1920 x 1080 (HD).
  • Up to 4K60FPS footage, or 120FPS in HD windowed.
  • 5″ 1920×1080 touch screen
  • Mini-XLR and 3.5mm analog audio inputs
  • USB-C port for external drive recording, software updates and media download
  • Full-size HMDI video output
  • CFast and SD UHS-II card slots

We will be getting a review sample of the Pocket 4K shortly – so stay tuned for our thoughts on the camera. More information is available direct from Blackmagic HERE.

KitGuru says: It was a lot of fun being able to see some of the first projects shot using the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. For a device as small as it is, there doesn't look to be any compromise with image quality. Stay tuned for more thoughts on the camera and how it performs.

In our initial review of the Razer Phone (HERE), we mentioned there was room for improvement when it came to the camera's software. Razer listened, and last month the company rolled out a big update to improve shutter speed, add the ability to easily switch between lenses and improve overall performance. With that in mind, we thought it high-time we revisited the phone to give its camera and software a proper analysis.

I've been using the Razer Phone for nearly three months now, ever since the global launch event in London. In my original review, I praised the primary lens but thought the software to be very poor. Three months on, can the Razer Phone's camera be considered a success? To find out, we analyse low-light performance, HDR mode, primary vs secondary lenses and even include comparisons with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

When it comes to smartphone manufacturing, Kodak isn't a name that is likely to pop into your head, but perhaps it should. The long-time photo company has launched a new flagship device in partnership with niche smartphone maker Bullitt, called the Ektra. Aimed at budding smartphone photographers, it features a number of advanced options and settings for those who love to take fancy shots.

While serious photographers will likely resort to the age old practice of using a standalone camera for their most favourite of snaps, Kodak believes a middle ground exists, where those with an advanced smartphone could focus their photo-taking efforts around their mobile handset. Ektra is designed to make that a reality, offering a 21 megapixel camera, Google Snapseed for photo editing and a dedicated shutter button.

kodakektra01

Perhaps the most stark addition though is the phone's lens. Measuring in at a whopping 26.5mm, the 6P lens should pull in a lot more light than your standard smartphone and should therefore deliver a much more detailed, much more vibrant image.

All of that camera hardware is backed up by bespoke software from Arcsoft which offers a number of unique photo modes, as well as manual settings for ISO, white balance and exposure. The big additions however are dynamic focus and object tracking, which keeps images crisp even when photographing moving targets.

kodakektra02

O/S wise, the Ektra runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with PCAdvisor still investigating whether the device will be upgraded to 7.0 Nougat before official release.

Internally the Kodak phone features deca-core MediaTek Helio X20, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on board storage. For those who need the added space – for presumably a large number of pictures – the Micro-SD slot can handle up to an additional 128GB of storage space. It also features a rear mounted speaker and a USB Type-C port, which can help fast charge the 3,000 mAh battery.

Display wise it offers a 5 inch, 1080P IPS display, with a pixel density of 441 PPI, all covered in a protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass.

Although not available for purchase just yet, the Kodak Ektra will be up for sale shortly, priced at £450 in the UK, much cheaper than some of the competition.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This seems like an interesting handset, though I have to imagine serious photographers will continue to use DSLR cameras. Perhaps this will be handy for those who take their photography seriously, but don't always carry their camera with them?

KitGuru were invited to spend some time with Intel on 21st October at Shoreditch Studios, London. Intel used a photographic studio in a converted railway arch in Shoreditch to display a show case of new laptops from a selection of its partners. KitGuru saw models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI that were all powered by 6th Gen Skylake chips.
Simon-Lambden-Intel
As you will see in our video KitGuru below spoke to Simon Lambden, Senior User Experience Engineer at Intel UK about the laptops.

Acer-Aspire-V-Nitro-VN7-792G-pic-1Acer-Aspire-V-Nitro-VN7-792G-pic-2Acer-Aspire-V-Nitro-VN7-792G-pic-3Acer-Aspire-V-Nitro-VN7-792G-pic-4Acer-Aspire-V-Nitro-VN7-792G-pic-5Acer-Aspire-V17-Nitro-pic-1Acer-Aspire-V17-Nitro-pic-2Acer-Aspire-V17-Nitro-pic-3Asus-X555UA-pic-1Asus-X555UA-pic-2
We talked about support for DDR3L and DDR4 and he explained the Dell XPS 13 laptop uses DDR3L-1867MHz as it has either a dual core Core i5 6200U or Core i7 6500U CPU. By contrast the XPS 15 is powered by a quad core HQ CPU and has a separate chipset and therefore runs on DDR4 memory.

We also had an in-depth chat about Intel's RealSense cameras.

The F200 user facing camera has been around for a year and consists of three devices – an optical 1080p camera, an infra-red camera and an infra-red projector. This allows the system to work out the shape of the hand or face and then measure eyes, mouth and other features within a range of 20cm to one metre.

R200 is brand new and is a world facing camera system with two infra red cameras for stereoscopic vision as well as the laser projector and optical camera. R200 can be used, for example, to scan and model objects in 3D.

Both cameras connect internally over a USB 3.0 interface to feed a combination of 3D data plus optical data to the CPU for processing.

The hardware and software in RealSense are proprietary Intel technology. Your newshound has heard rumours that Realsense adds about US$100 to the cost of a laptop.

The key points KitGuru took away from the event were that Intel isn't interested in talking about clock speeds or graphics capability but instead is focusing on power consumption and battery life. The flip side is that screens are moving from 1080p to 4K and more pixels requires more power. Panel quality is improving and the norm is either IPS or PLS technology with superb colours and wide viewing angles.

Intel's video decoder uses slightly more power than running at idle for video playback – the aim is to reduce power consumption until it is the same as idle. Clearly this refers to the Intel chip and excludes power for the screen.

Convertible laptops are described as ‘laptop first' or ‘tablet first' to describe their primary function.

Lenovo Yoga 900 is an example of laptop first. Last year this 2-in-1 convertible used Core M but now it has a 15W Core i7 in the same form factor while HP Spectre X2 is tablet first, weighs under a kilo and is powered by Core M.

The Ultrabook term is well and truly deceased and it was interesting to see that Intel is far more discriminating about touch screen technology. A year or two back touch screen was essential. In this show case it was clear that tablets require a touch screen however conventional laptops such as the MSI GS60 gaming power house rely on mouse and keyboard. This makes perfect sense and is a welcome change in emphasis.

The idea that some laptops benefit from Nvidia graphics didn't receive much of a mention.

Kitguru says: Our final thought from the show case is that every laptop was running Windows 10 (as far as we could see) however we haven't yet seen DirectX 12 in action. This is clearly something we hope to see in the very near future.

Softkinetic Systems is a company that's been working on an interesting 3D sensing technology for some time now. It uses lasers to track the time of flight of light, much like sonar does with sound waves, and uses it to track people, objects and actions in a 3D space. While that holds lots of potential for smarter homes and more interactive technologies through gestures, one facet of it that has people excited is its potential for the next-generation of virtual reality control, without the need for gamepads or controllers.

sensor

That's why the fact that Sony has purchased Softkinetic is so exciting. If its laser based trackers are able to keep an eye on our bodies as a whole, rather than just hands and head as is the case with many VR systems now, there's huge potential for more detailed experiences.

Better yet, we know it works, as a simple rendition was demoed at CES last year, when paired up with an Oculus Rift headset.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJwljGamIGw']

In the above demonstration, the camera system was only used to track the hands of the user, but it was able to keep an eye on his fingers, as well as palms and wrists in much more detail than other virtual reality trackers. It's easy to imagine this extrapolated to having a pair or more trackers that keep an eye on much more.

“Sony will focus on combining Softkinetic’s ToF range image sensor technology expertise with its own technologies with the aim of developing the next generation of range image sensors and solutions, not only in the field of imaging, but for broader sensing-related applications as well,” the Japanese electronics maker said in a statement (via RoadtoVR).

You can spend a small fortune on an action cam or you score this Amkov AMK5000S for £70 in the UK. Indeed Gearbest, the company that sent us the AMK5000S, sells the cam for US$70 which is even cheaper. That's pretty amazing when you consider the package includes a waterproof housing and a selection of mounts. If you want to attach the Amkov to your car windscreen or surfboard you'll probably have to invest in some after-market accessories, however the package sets you on the path to action cam happiness.

The dimensions of the Amkov are similar to a GoPro 3, measuring 59mm wide x 41mm high x 21mm/26mm deep (allowing for lens), so we are talking about a tiny piece of hardware. The headline features are a 14MP camera (4,288×3,216) the ability to shoot 1080p video at 30fps (as well as 720p at 30fps or 60fps) and a 2cm mono screen that is pretty much an irrelevance as there are no features to control or settings to select.

It is hard to glean much information about this particular cam, apart from the fact that it uses a Sunplus 6330M chipset, however that doesn't actually tell us a great deal.

The photos and video should make it clear that you will spend very little time messing around with settings in the Amkov. You are obliged to install an app called AMK-icam on your phone or tablet in order that you can connect using the Wi-Fi on the cam. This is a quick process so you can verify settings as there are not too many things you might consider changing.

Basically you select photo or video, confirm the video is recording at 1080p rather than 720p, leave White Balance on Auto and decide whether you want to shoot a video clip of a pre-set limit or to keep recording until you press the button again. You might expect to be able to change the Field Of View or to adjust the microphone level but this isn't an option with the Amkov. You can, however, adjust the digital zoom but this is a bad idea as the results look very poor.

Once the camera is mounted on a tripod (or one of the mounts in the accessory pack) you are ready to record and that is a simple matter of pressing the button.

When you're finished recording simply slip out the MicroSD card and transfer your files to your PC or laptop.

Amkov zoom x3Amkov zoom x4
(sample images above retained at full size for better analysis)

The Amkov AMK5000S takes competent photos with the proviso that you leave the digital zoom alone. The 14MP CMOS sensor does a fair job and the lens is tolerably good but there is no way you are going to win any photographic contests with the output, which is exactly what you should expect from a tiny, cheap action cam. If you employ the digital zoom the results change from acceptable to lousy and while that may sound harsh it is the only realistic description.

Video quality
At 720p the video lacks clarity and sharpness but delivers reasonable results. Turn the settings up to 1080p and suddenly everything clicks. The clip taken at night at a railway station shows some diggers working on the track. The iSAW Advance A3 Extreme does a fine job and the video is true to life, but the thing is that the scene was lit with yellow sodium light and wasn't especially clear.

The Amkov AMK5000S corrected the lighting and produced video that was more pleasing than the real world scene. This may not be accurate or ‘correct' but the result is better video and frankly that is all that matters in this context.

Closing Thoughts

We expected very little from the Amkov AMK5000S yet the fact is that it delivered some really good 1080p video.

At one level the lack of audio control, the inability to change Field Of View and the awful digital zoom all sound like negative points. At another level the luxury of simply turning on the cam and starting to shoot is really liberating. You can be set up and ready to go in moments.
conclusion image
So who might want to capture a parachute jump from outer space using an AMK5000S? Well hopefully nobody. There is a clear market for the likes of GoPro (and iSAW and TomTom among others) and we doubt that Amkov is going to win over people looking to capture one-off moments they really REALLY don't want to miss.

But if you like the idea of a dirt cheap action camera that you can mount on a balloon, kite, drone or some other madcap machine, well that's a different matter. Why risk a £300 action cam or an iPhone when you can simply use an AMK5000S and if it falls in deep water or smashes on the rocks it is a trivial loss.

This means that the price of the Amkov AM5000S is all-important. This action cam has the bare minimum of features but can deliver 1080p video at a low, low price and that's the end of the story.

Buy from GearBest for $70 (Product Coupon AMK5000S) or Buy from Amazon in the UK for £70 inc vat.

Pros

  • Low price.
  • Surprisingly good 1080p video.
  • Simple controls.
  • Built in Wi-Fi.
  • Easy access to the MicroSD slot.

Cons

  • No likelihood of firmware updates to provide new features.
  • Dreadful digital zoom.
  • The user manual is very basic.
  • Removing the battery is fiddly.
  • No control over audio
  • No control over Field Of View.

KitGuru says: At this absurdly low price the Amkov AMK500S is a winner.

Nokia Corp. on Wednesday introduced its first virtual reality project, which is not a headset. Instead of targeting consumers with its VR hardware, Nokia targets content creators with its Ozo, a special camera with eight sensors developed specifically to create virtual reality movies.

The Nokia Ozo is a spherical device that features eight synchronized global shutter sensors and eight integrated microphones. The camera can capture stereoscopic 3D video, but actual resolutions it supports are currently unknown. Nokia claims that its Ozo is the first in a planned portfolio of digital media solutions from Nokia Technologies, which means that other similar products will follow.

Nokia this week introduced its Ozo to representatives from major studios, production houses and media and technology companies. The company intends to work closely with such partners to refine its Ozo and tailor it for the needs of professionals.

Content filmed using Nokia Ozo can be published for commercially available VR viewing hardware such as head mounted displays (HMDs). Nokia plans to release special software with Ozo, which will enable real-time 3D viewing, with a playback solution that removes the need to pre-assemble a panoramic image. Ozo will also be compatible with existing professional production tools.

“We're thrilled to introduce OZO to the content creation world, and to define a completely new category of virtual reality capture and playback solutions,” said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies. “Ozo aims to advance the next wave of innovation in VR by putting powerful tools in the hands of professionals who will create amazing experiences for people around the world. We expect that virtual reality experiences will soon radically enhance the way people communicate and connect to stories, entertainment, world events and each other. With Ozo, we plan to be at the heart of this new world.”

Actual price, technical specifications and other details regarding Nokia Ozo will be released at a later date.

The Nokia Ozo will be made in Finland by Nokia itself, which means that volumes will not be very high. The company plans to start shipments of the camera with eight sensors in the fourth quarter of 2015.

KitGuru Says: Nokia’s Ozo camera looks considerably better than solutions for virtual reality filming introduced to date. But will it be good enough for Hollywood studios? After all, Nokia is new to content creation business and VR content business is still at an early stage of development…

Logitech on Wednesday announced that many of its new products will carry “Logi” brand from now on to reflect that they are more than technology and are a part of modern lifestyle. Initially, the “Logi” brand will be used on select product categories, but eventually it may replace “Logitech” name on its classic products too. Moreover, the company will change its corporate logo too.

Logitech was established in 1981 with the aim to produce high-quality ergonomic computer mice. Over the years, Logitech has expanded its product portfolio rather dramatically and today it produces tens of different product categories, many of which are new. In fact, growing categories of products (e.g., wireless speakers for smartphones) now account for over 30 per cent of the company’s strategic retail sales.

In a bid to emphasize that it is now more than a yet another technology company, Logitech will use “Logi” brand on numerous categories of products. According to Logitech, technology is pervasive today, like clothes. Therefore, using the word tech is not something necessary.

“Tech is everywhere,” said Charlotte Johs, vice president of brand development at Logitech, reports Gizmodo. “Tech is in the air you breathe… it is in your clothes… in the future, ‘tech’ does not say anything.”

In addition to changing its name, Logitech will also change its brand identity. Recently the company hired its first-ever chief design officer, Alastair Curtis. From now on, the company’s products will feature bold colors and simple designs.

“We’ve been reinventing Logitech, creating products that strive to blend advanced technology and design to bring you amazing experiences,” said Bracken Darrell, Logitech president and CEO. “We’ve built a world-class design team, led by chief designer Alastair Curtis. We’re putting Design at the center of everything we do. Our approach to Design goes beyond the classic definition. Design to us is the combination of advanced technology, business strategy and consumer insights. Our products have come a long way, and now it’s time to bring the brand forward too.”

As part of the brand reinventionm customers will begin to see the name Logi on select products in existing categories, and expect some twists and a few surprises in new categories, the company advised.

KitGuru Says: As usual, it is a little bit sad to see a renowned brand leaving the scene. Logitech has been around for over 30 years and many people trust it. Will people trust “Logi”? Probably yes, but certainly not everyone will like “bold colours and simple designs.”

Microsoft Corp.’s HoloLens is an impressive device that the company hopes will create a new product category. At present, it is hard to imagine potentially popular usage models for HoloLens and it is uncertain whether Microsoft’s hopes are justified. One thing that is clear is that the device will be rather expensive, something that may slow down its adoption.

The Microsoft HoloLens is a fully-fledged personal computer with a high-performance central processing unit, a graphics processing unit, a custom holographic processing unit that processes terabytes of data from multiple sensors and loads of other hardware. Since HoloLens is an extremely advanced piece of technology, it is rather expensive to build. Therefore, it will not be affordable for end users too.

microsoft_hololens

One current Microsoft executive told New York Times that HoloLens would cost significantly more than a game console. At present Microsoft sells its Xbox One system for $399. Moreover, when Microsoft sold its latest console for $499, its popularity was rather low.

Microsoft executives want to release HoloLens as soon as possible, partly because the device is unique and partly because it is powered by its upcoming Windows 10 operating system. Still, the world’s largest developer of software does not seem to be over-optimistic about HoloLens.

“I don’t want to overhype it like Google Glass and say this is the next,” said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft in an interview with NYT. “I want us to be deliberate about what it is.”

KitGuru Says: While Microsoft’s HoloLens seems to be very advanced from technology point of view, without applications that really take advantage of all of its features, it will never get popular, especially if it costs more than $400. In the past Microsoft released innovative gadgets ahead of competitors, however, they did not become popular due to various reasons.

Canon has launched its new 5DS and 5DS R DSLR cameras, packing in 50 megapixels of resolution, making them the highest resolution full-frame DSLRs ever made. There isn't a big difference between the two models, they both use 50 megapixel full-frame sensors along with the body of the 5D Mark III.

However, the 5DS R lets you cancel the low pass filter, allowing for a boost in detail for an extra $200. The 5DS will set you back $3700 while the 5DS R will cost $3900.

The cameras feature a 61 point AF system and dual DIGIC 6 processors, which may make it as speedy as the 7D Mark II. Some tweaks have also been made to reduce shake, allowing for better still images.

Due to the sensor pixels being so densely packed, they will gather less light. Low light performance is said to also be in line with the 7D Mark II. The 5DS is capable of shooting video but Canon hasn't said much about features, codecs or frame rates, so it likely isn't a strong suit.

It is likely that Canon's new 50 megapixel sensor will push other camera makers to match the pixel count. There is also a rumor suggesting that Canon's new sensor was actually made by Sony for its own cameras in the future.
