MSI has recently announced its new PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD. Available with 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB of storage, the upcoming Spatium M580 Frozr can almost use the entirety of its PCIe 5.0 x4 bus, capable of reading data at up to 14.6 GB/s.

Powered by the Phison E26 PCIe Gen 5 controller and 232-layer 3D NAND memory, this SSD offers blazing-fast read speeds of up to 14.6 GB/s and write speeds of up to 12.7 GB/s. This exceptional performance is achieved thanks to a DRAM cache buffer and an SLC cache, which provide lightning-fast data access and reduced latency for gaming, content production, and professional applications. Additionally, the M580 Frozr is equipped with LPDC ECC and E2E Data Protection, which ensure data integrity and dependability.

The Spatium M580 Frozr also features a passive heatsink cooler pre-installed on the SSD. The cooler comes with three heatpipes, known as Core pipes, and a tower of aluminium fins that maximise surface area. This heatsink maintains maximum storage throughput even under intense workloads, lowering operating temperatures by up to 20 degrees Celsius.

MSI also offers a software solution with system status monitoring and data backup embedded into the MSI Centre. The MSI Centre provides complete information on the SSD's status, such as drive health, usage capacity, and current operating temperature. Moreover, MSI has partnered with Actiphy for easy data back-ups.

KitGuru says: If you're looking for a super fast PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD without active cooling, the Spatium M580 Frozr might be the right choice for you.

Each week, those with an Epic Games Store account are privy to a number of titles for free. Though not always the most exciting offerings, next week’s free games include Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout spiritual successor ‘The Outer Worlds’ alongside ‘Thief’.

Available to claim for free from the 4th of April until the 11th, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition and Thief are next week’s free games.

As mentioned, The Outer Worlds is a spiritual successor to Fallout in a sense, with the New Vegas developers tackling the open world choice-based RPG genre once again – to great success.

The Spacer’s Choice Edition is somewhat of a remaster for The Outer Worlds (despite only being a couple years old), featuring “better graphics, improved performance, additional animations, higher-res environments, and more”. Additionally, all previously released DLC is included as well, netting you the full Outer Worlds experience.

Released back in 2014, Thief is the latest entry in this classic-yet-dormant franchise and served as somewhat of a reboot of the 1st person stealth action series. Fans of stealth games owe it to themselves to give this overlooked title a try.

Both Thief and The Outer Worlds will be available to claim from the 4th of April.

KitGuru says: What do you think of next week’s offerings? Have you played any of the Thief games? How does The Outer Worlds compare to Fallout New Vegas? Let us know down below.

Back in 2020, Sony published Predator: Hunting Grounds: An asymmetrical multiplayer game, similar to the likes of Friday The 13th and Dead by Daylight, in which a group of elite operatives must take down the ever-elusive predator – and vice versa. Failing to set the world on fire at the time, Predator: Hunting Grounds is getting a surprising second chance at life.

Making the surprise announcement via a press release, the game’s developers – IllFonic – revealed that they have now acquired publishing rights for the game. As mentioned, Predator: Hunting Grounds was originally published by PlayStation, and as such was limited to the PS4 and PC. With the devs now self-publishing the game themselves, this current-gen upgrade/remaster is coming to Xbox as well as PS5 and PC.

Ahead of the remaster’s release in late 2024, Predator: Hunting Grounds on PS4 and PC will be getting a pretty major patch, focusing on “player movement, Fireteam weapon rework and balance, Predator weapon balance, and UX/playability improvements.”

That said, the big update is said to be coming sometime in late 2024, when Predator: Hunting Grounds will get a bespoke PS5 version alongside an Xbox release for the first time. The new release will also include post-launch support, with the game said to be getting new Predators by the end of the year, with even more being added in Spring of 2025.

Predator: Hunting Grounds received a lukewarm reception upon its initial launch. That said, with IllFonic working on a whole host of core gameplay improvements, Predator: Hunting Grounds could find greater success its second time round.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Predator: Hunting Grounds? Are you surprised by its return? What were your main issues with the game? Let us know down below.

After going years without a new 2D Mario entry, last year saw the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Finally moving away from the New Super Mario Bros. series, Mario Wonder introduced a bunch of new mechanics – including game altering ‘Wonder’ effects. Though the final game already has dozens of effects, at one point Nintendo had over 2000 different and unique ideas.

As reported by Eurogamer, during GDC, Takashi Tezuka (producer for Mario Wonder) and Shiro Mouri (Wonder’s director) discussed many aspects surrounding the development of Super Mario Bros. Wonder – including the game’s titular mechanic. According to the duo:

“We held brainstorming sessions where the whole team shared their ideas for Wonder Effects. It was up to everyone on our team to come up with ideas, regardless of job title or seniority; Nintendo believes that everyone on a team is a game designer.”

They continued, “At first, we asked everyone to write any and all ideas on sticky notes, without any conditions. After all, if you start with conditions, you stifle creative freedom. At this stage, we collected around 2000 ideas.”

Mario Wonder was praised for its abundant and constant creativity – thanks in part to these new wonder effects. Knowing now that the ones which made it into the final product were whittled down from over 2000 ideas shows the company’s focus on quality.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Wonder Effects? What was your favourite new addition to Mario Wonder? Let us know down below.

For a while there, it seemed as though both Microsoft and Epic Games were signing as many deals as they could to have games added to their respective platforms exclusively – for a period of time. Many indie devs praised these deals for offering greater stability and freedom for the studios. Unfortunately, the well seems to have dried up.

As reported by PC Gamer, Casey Yano – the co-founder of Slay the Spire studio Mega Crit – spoke during GDC on the current status of support from large platform holders in particular when it comes to indies, saying:

“I talked to at least five small teams, like 35 [members] and under, during GDC, and they're like: Cuts, cuts, cuts, funding cancelled, talks that were going on for a year, cancelled. It sounds like it's shit. We're definitely very privileged to be able to self-fund. [Otherwise] I'd be very, very, very scared right now.”

Expanding on this further, Chris Bourassa claimed that both Microsoft and Epic Games have greatly decreased their funding for platform exclusives, stating that these types of deals have “come down in scope,” adding that “The Gold Rush is over. I come from the Northwest Territories. The town I'm from was built on gold, and then they found diamonds further north. Maybe another paradigm shift is waiting for us, but I definitely think the scale of the deals I'm hearing about is significantly diminished from the big swinging days.”

Whenever there is a new console or service/platform, it’s always the same story, in which indies help prop up and support these burgeoning products – only to then be abandoned once the platforms have achieved enough success to try for bigger fish.

NCSoft has been hard at work supporting Guild Wars 2 over the past decade, bringing several major expansions. Now, the company's attention is turning towards what's next, with Guild Wars 3 now officially on the way.

During a recent NCSoft shareholder meeting, company CEO, Park Byung-moo, confirmed that Guild Wars 3 is in development. Unfortunately, this announcement was geared towards investors, rather than fans of the franchise, so there is little information beyond this. Still, for long-time players, this should be exciting news.

The MMO market has changed significantly since the launch of Guild Wars all the way back in the 2000s. The sequel, Guild Wars 2, arrived in 2012 and was met with solid reviews. Thanks to the game's buy-to-play model, players have always been able to easily jump back into Guild Wars after purchasing it, with no additional monthly subscription required.

With Guild Wars 3 now being confirmed to investors, we may not have to wait long for more official news. Perhaps we'll get a big unveiling later this year, but without knowing how long the game has been in development for, it would be hard to discern exactly when to expect a release date. Guild Wars 2 just received its latest expansion last year, so there may still be life left in that game before shifting over to a new-gen sequel.

KitGuru Says: Have you played much Guild Wars 2 since its launch in 2012? Would you be keen to return for a sequel?

Relic Entertainment has been under the SEGA umbrella for years now, producing games like Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, while also offering development resources for partners like Microsoft. Now, Relic is transitioning, splitting off from SEGA to become an independent studio.

Today, it was announced that Relic is buying itself out and going independent. It is unclear if the Company of Heroes IP will go with the studio but the company should still have steady work, as it is a key partner for Microsoft's revived Age of Empires series.

Unfortunately, there is some bad news to go along with all of this. SEGA is cutting 240 jobs across its SEGA Europe, SEGA Hardlight and Creative Assembly studios. Creative Assembly had already suffered a bit of a hit in 2023, after its shooter project, Hyenas, was cancelled.

As pointed out by GI.biz, SEGA was quick to apologise to employees learning about this now through social media and news outlets. Due to rules requiring SEGA to inform the Tokyo Stock Exchange beforehand, the news spread rather quickly.

SEGA also says that these job cuts will help the publisher “streamline” operations to “focus on what we are good at”. This news also arrives alongside news that Sega employees have become the first in the games industry to ratify a union contract. Other studios across the industry are also working towards unionising.

KitGuru Says: I can't help but feel that Creative Assembly found its calling with Alien Isolation and should have been encouraged to continue down that path. Horror games have been having a resurgence in recent years and I'm sure we all would have loved to have seen Alien Isolation 2, rather than an attempt at a live-service shooter like Hyenas.

Edifier recently introduced its latest speaker set, the QR65 desktop active monitors. These speakers offer a unique blend of acoustic expertise, Lumia light effects, and TurboGaN fast-charging capabilities, designed to cater to a wide range of users.

The QR65 has already won a few prestigious awards, including the Visual Grand Prix 2024 and VGP 2024 Gold Medal awards. The QR65 incorporates sophisticated acoustic architecture, which enables it to deliver rich and full-bodied sound. With 2.75″ mid-low drivers, an aluminium alloy diaphragm, and long-throw construction, the speakers can produce powerful bass frequencies and clear mids.

The QR65 also delivers precise high-frequency performance thanks to 1.25″ silk diaphragm dome tweeters calibrated by Edifier. These tweeters result in crisp and bright trebles that stand out above even the most “bass-full” mixes. The speakers are housed in an MDF shell featuring dedicated acoustic chambers to segregate amplification components, resulting in decreased resonance, signal loss, and distortion.

Edifier's MazeTube Bass Reflex Channels and TurbMuff Air Noise Suppression Technology help to decrease unwanted acoustic resonance. The QR65 has two machine-tooled aluminium supports that lift the speakers, eliminating unwanted vibrations and channelling sound towards the top when placed on a desk. To complement the audio experience, the QR65 features 3D lighting effects via TempoAbyss technology (infinity mirror). A button on the side controls 11 preset light effects, and the ConneX app offers an extra ‘customise your own' option, offering 16 million conceivable combinations.

The Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless-certified QR65 uses LDAC and has an end-to-end audio process flow that supports high-resolution audio up to 24 bit/96 kHz. It also has USB and Line-In inputs and a subwoofer output connector. The Edifier QR65 speakers are now available for £329.99.

KitGuru says: These speakers might be a bit too pricey for most users looking for a pair of desktop speakers. Still, for those for whom money is no object, the QR65 might be worth considering if they deliver on Edifier's claims.

We've been hearing about a new all-digital version of the Xbox Series X for a while now. While previous leaks pointed to a more comprehensive refresh, with an all-new design and 6nm chip at the centre, more recent photos point to a simpler design tweak, showing the Xbox Series X as we know it today … but without the disc drive.

Exputer has obtained photos of the purported digital Xbox Series X. It looks identical to the current model, but notably, the disc drive has been removed and the colour has changed to white, likely in an effort to differentiate it more from the current Xbox Series X.

It has also been claimed that the all-digital model will see up to a $100 discount over the standard Xbox Series X. Some internal components may also be upgraded for improved power efficiency and better cooling.

Assuming these photos are legitimate, then we should see the white, digital Xbox Series X console later this year.

KitGuru Says: If you are going all digital, then extra storage space is essential. With that in mind, I would like to see a bump to a 2TB SSD in this new version of the console.

Somehow, the team at Hello Games are able to update No Man’s Sky at a consistent and rapid rate. Just over one month since its last major update, No Man’s Sky: Orbital is available now.

Making the announcement via the PlayStation Blog, Hello Games founder Sean Murray unveiled No Man’s Sky’s 27th major update. This meaty patch brings with it a whole host of improvements, with a large focus on Space Stations.

According to Murray, “Engine improvements have allowed us to create vast interior spaces and exterior spaces, with improved reflection and metallic surfaces.”

Its refreshed internals are matched equally by the space station’s new external aesthetics – being much larger in size and more varied in design.

This overhaul to space stations allows for a greater deal of freedom within, now offering new shops, gameplay, activities and most importantly a ship editor – ,meaning you will no longer have to rely on RNG to get the perfect ship for you.

Other miscellaneous additions and changes include a new in-depth guild system, the aforementioned engine improvements and UI enhancements – alongside “many more additions and quality of life improvements.”

No Man’s Sky is truly the gift that keeps on giving. With how much support the game has gotten, it is surprising to see that there are still new things to add and improve upon.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest update? Is No Man’s Sky updated TOO often? What has been your favourite out of all 27 major updates? Let us know down below.

If you are a regular viewer or reader, you will have seen a series of videos from last year where we helped EKWB develop their direct die CPU block for custom loop cooling. Since then, EKWB has launched the world's first AIO designed for cooling delidded Intel LGA1700 CPUs. In this review, we are taking a look at the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooler and finding out if it can tame the Intel Core i9-14900KS.

Test System Specifications:

Testing Methodology:

We are primarily focussing on the performance of the cooler at 100% fan speed. We will focus on cooling performance using a manual overclock with all-core frequency and VCORE locked to 5.8GHz P-Cores/1.38v VCORE voltage.

A standard EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 LUX D-RGB is used for the stock CPU test pre-delid, and the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooler is used on the modified delidded CPU.

  • The test data is logged using HWINFO and the final 10 minutes of the data is calculated to find the average CPU temperature.
  • For testing, we use a 30-minute looped run of Cinebench R23 and record the steady-state CPU temperature at the end of the test. This ensures that the CPU has had ample time to warm up and reach a steady state under both of the coolers.
  • The ambient is maintained at 19-21 degrees Celsius. Where there is variation beyond this temperature range, we add extra repeated tests to ensure consistency. However, this is well controlled now with A/C.

Thermal Performance

This line chart shows the CPU temperature of the stock unmodified CPU versus the delidded CPU and EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooling over the full 30-minute Cinebench R23 looped run. The chart speaks for itself, it's clear to see an almost 20ºC temperature drop with the delidded and direct-die cooled CPU.

When we take the average temperature from the final 10 minutes of the Cinebench R23 Loop run, we again see an almost 20ºC improvement in CPU package temperature when delidding and direct die cooling the Core i9-14900KS with the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooler, which is an impressive showing.

Cinebench R23 Multi-Core Benchmark Scores:

Above: Typical Cinebench score with stock IHS and 360mm AIO cooler.
Above: Best Cinebench R23 Benchmark score with Direct Die cooling.

Closing Thoughts

The video pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooler. It's reasonably priced compared with traditional style AIO coolers, it is easy to install once you have your CPU delidded, it looks good, the build quality is high and the results of direct die cooling using the EK-Nucleus Direct Die AIO on a high-end LGA1700 CPU are spectacular to say the least, so taken as a whole it’s a great product.

I have dabbled with direct die cooling previously and worked with EK in the development of the company’s EK-Quantum Velocity² Direct Die CPU water block for custom loop cooling, so I was expecting a positive result but I never imagined that the drop in package temperature for the Core i9-14900KS was going to be this dramatic. Knocking 20°C off the average over a 30-minute Cinebench R23 stress test is very impressive and it also improves system stability with BIOS defaults loaded.

There are some negatives to using the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die cooler though, the user will have to delid the CPU which is a daunting task that can sometimes not quite go to plan and cause damage to the CPU, but if you use the EK-Quantum Velocity² IHS Removal Tool, watch the delidding video by EK’s Joe Robey and follow the instructions carefully, the risk of causing damage to the CPU is minimal and you should be successful.

The only other minor negative with the EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die is that the delid tool isn't included with the cooler and you are not going to be direct die cooling anything without one. My suggestion to EKWB would be to either offer a discount to consumers who buy the direct die cooler and the delid tool together or bundle the tool with the cooler for an increased price. But other than those minor negatives it’s a brilliant product and essential if you want to extract the best possible performance from the Intel Core i9-14900KS.

The EK-Nucleus AIO CR360 Direct Die 1700 D-RGB is available to purchase now from OverclockersUK priced at £199.99 HERE.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

Pros:

  • Great thermal Performance on high-end LGA1700 CPUs.
  • Easy cooler installation.
  • Excellent build quality.

Cons:

  • The user is required to delid the CPU.
  • No delid tool is included with the cooler.

KitGuru says: If you are planning on picking up an Intel Core i9-14900KS then I would recommend getting the EK-Nucleus Direct Die cooler. Keeping the CPU cool with a standard AIO is very difficult and can lead to system instability.

Embracer Group has been undergoing a cost-cutting initiative over the past year, leading to several studio closures and layoffs. Other major companies under the Embracer banner have instead been sold. Earlier this month we saw Saber Interactive split off from its former parent company. Now, Gearbox Entertainment has also been sold.

There were several bidders for Gearbox Entertainment when the company went up for sale a couple of years ago. Now, the company appears to be going back to its true home. Take-Two is acquiring Gearbox Entertainment, including the company's main studios in Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal and Gearbox Quebec in a deal worth $460 million.

The rights to Borderlands, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem and Homeworld will be staying with Gearbox. Meanwhile, Embracer Group will hang on to Gearbox Publishing, which will be renamed once the deal completes. As the owner of Gearbox Publishing, Embracer Group will retain the rights to Neverwinter Online and Star Trek Online, as well as the Cryptic, Lost Boys Interactive and Captured Dimensions studios.

Embracer CEO and co-founder, Lars Wingefors, stated that this deal will aid in lowering net debt and cash flow for the company. Meanwhile, Gearbox Entertainment should have a more stable home at Take-Two, one of the most successful publishing companies in the industry.

KitGuru Says: The writing has been on the wall for a while, with Embracer previously confirming that it is considering selling off Gearbox to improve its financial situation. We wondered if that was still the case after selling off Saber Interactive. Moving forward, Gearbox will be working with Take-Two once again as a studio within the 2K family, which is fitting given past involvement in the Borderlands series.

The success of DOOM’s 2016 reboot saw a whole host of smaller studios take inspiration from the fast-paced kinetic and rhythmic first-person shooter. One such studio is The Outsiders – whose unique rhythm-based FPS Metal: Hellsinger has now been announced to be getting a VR release.

Available on PC and consoles since late 2022, Metal: Hellsinger is a fast-paced DOOM-like arena shooter which requires you to shoot and slay to the beat – in a fashion not too dissimilar to Hi-Fi Rush.

Though no date was provided, the VR release for Metal: Hellsinger has been announced to be coming to PSVR2, Meta Quest VR and Steam PC VR – so essentially every VR platform.

Due to the arena-based nature of the game, Metal: Hellsinger is a great fit for VR and will likely enhance what is already a very visceral and impactful title.

The description for the game is as follows: “Metal: Hellsinger VR redesigns the acclaimed rhythm shooter from the ground up, placing its infernal arsenal straight into your hands and the fires of Hell at your feet. Enjoy a range of features from the original game, including the full epic campaign, Archdevil difficulty, Torment Challenges, and Beast Assist Mode, reimagined for VR”

Toys For Bob have had an interesting few weeks. Following the completion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, the studio announced their intentions to go independent. Microsoft obliged, though are still working with Toys For Bob on their next game. According to one insider, this game is Spyro 4.

Releasing a video onto his channel, Spyro and Crash YouTuber ‘Canadian Guy Eh’ has claimed that Spyro 4 is in development and has been since January of this year.

Though the statement should be taken with a pinch of salt, the insider claims to have had multiple conversations with different developers over the months who have confirmed that a new Spyro is in the works – and that Toys For Bob are working on it.

For the uninitiated, Toys For Bob were tasked with the development of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy as well as Crash Bandicoot 4, so they’re well-versed in the mascot platformer genre.

That, alongside various teases and hints by the studio, seems to indicate that Spyro the Dragon is finally getting a brand new original entry. Hopefully it matches the quality of the PSOne trilogy.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Spyro as a franchise? Do you want to see it return? Is Toys For Bob the right studio for the job? Let us know down below.

If you are looking to build a new PC, hardware bundles can often be a quick and easy way to get several core components together at a discounted price. Cooler Master has something similar on the way with the new TD500 Max case, which comes packaged with an 850W power supply, perfect for a high-end gaming build, along with a 360mm AIO liquid cooler.

The TD500 Max has several key features and advantages, including its custom AIO cooler, which uses a Cooler Master 360x38mm Atmos radiator pre-assembled at the front and equipped with three Mobius 120P RGB fans. An additional Mobius 120P RGB fan is at the rear for exhaust.

Another unique feature is the tailored power solution, which includes a Cooler Master GXII 850W ATX 3.0 PSU that is pre-installed and ready to be plugged into the wall and components. The TD500 Max's PSU is ATX 3.0-ready and compatible with the latest GPUs. The patented two-stage power connection simplifies installation and cable management, further enhancing the system-building process.

Additionally, the case's PSU shroud has a concealed storage compartment for additional screws. Available in grey, the Cooler Master TD500 Max is scheduled to be released in the UK in early April, priced at £369.99

KitGuru says: Although pricey, one must remember that it already includes a 360 AIO cooler and a decent power supply bundled with it, making it a perfect starting point for a new build.

While most games on PC Game Pass launch straight through the Xbox App, some do require an additional launcher and account. This will be the case with Diablo IV, which is finally landing on Game Pass this week, but new players will also need to sign up for a Battle.net account to play.

Diablo IV is coming to Game Pass tomorrow, although installs for the game on PC Game Pass have already gone live through the Xbox Windows application. Once downloaded, you will need to set yourself up with a Battle.net account if you don't have one already and then link your Microsoft/Xbox and Battle.net accounts.

Microsoft has shared a quick and easy guide to getting this all set up, which you can find below:

  • Open the Xbox App on PC and make sure you are signed in with your Microsoft account tied to your Game Pass membership. Then click on Diablo IV and then the Install button.
  • Click “Install Battle.net” when prompted and complete the installation. (If you already have Battle.net installed, you’ll skip to the next step automatically)
  • You’ll be prompted to connect your Battle.net account to your Microsoft account. If you already have a Battle.net account you can log in to complete the connection, or from here you can create a Battle.net account to make the connection.
  • Once you have downloaded Battle.net and connected your accounts, you can complete the installation of Diablo IV!

As Blizzard already has such a huge presence in the PC market, many of you likely do already have Battle.net accounts, but if you don't, hopefully the steps above will help you out so you can dive in and start slaying demons all across Sanctuary.

KitGuru Says: When this Game Pass date was first announced, Diablo 4's new season had not yet been delayed. If you are a new player to Diablo 4, I recommend taking your time with the campaign and testing out classes, then jumping into seasonal content once Season 4 drops, as it will include overhauls for many of the game's systems, which will ultimately transform the end-game experience.

Earlier this week, Marvel began teasing a new upcoming game announcement, which was quickly rumoured to be a multiplayer game, rather than a single-player, story-driven title. Now, Marvel Rivals has officially announced and surprisingly, parts of it look like they were ripped straight out of Overwatch.

Overwatch has been on the decline for a while now, with community sentiment dropping after the disappointing launch of Overwatch 2 and all the changes that came with it. Fortunately for fans of the original Overwatch formula, with 6v6 battles, it seems Marvel Rivals is taking its ‘inspiration' from the first game rather than the second.

Marvel Rivals is a 6v6 competitive ‘hero' shooter, where each player on a team selects a damage, tank or support character, with the goal of synergising various abilities to come out on top over the course of a match. The art style and UI almost intentionally look similar to Overwatch, with maps that look like they could have been previously designed for Blizzard's shooter.

It really is quite bizarre to see in action, particularly with certain characters, like Hulk, having very similar move-sets to established Overwatch characters.

The game will enter beta in May, with a full PC release coming later this year on Steam and the Epic Games Store. A console release has not yet been announced.

KitGuru Says: This game is being developed by Net Ease, so expect the usual crop of free-to-play microtransactions to be in place. There is one thing that really sticks out as different to Overwatch though, and that is ‘team-up' abilities, which only briefly appear in the trailer. This idea should lead to lots of multi-character synergies, which could add a slightly different flavour to the flow of a match compared to the game this title is clearly inspired by.

At an event in China this month, AMD unveiled a few new upcoming processors. The new Ryzen 8000F processors offer a cheaper option for those who don't need an integrated GPU, while the new Ryzen 5000XT processors will offer higher clock speeds than their predecessors.

HXL shared a photo from an event panel showing the new Ryzen 8000F and Ryzen 5000XT CPUs. Based on the Hawk Point series, the Ryzen 8000F series is expected to include an 8700F with 8x cores and 16x threads, comparable to the 8700G CPU. The other CPU is the Ryzen 5 8400F, which, due to its name, is more difficult to estimate as its model name falls between the 8500G and 8300G, both of which have significantly different configurations. However, it can be assumed that the 8400F will have 6x cores and 12x threads.

AMD is also seemingly planning a new refresh of the Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors. While specific details are still to be determined, we would expect these processors to be similar to the previous Ryzen 3000XT series, with higher clock speeds out of the box, while keeping other specs intact.

The new processors were unveiled at a Chinese event, indicating that they might not be available on the global market, at least not during the initial launch phase. However, as with other AMD Ryzen SKUs, such as the Ryzen 7500F, they may be released worldwide, even if only via system integrators.

KitGuru says: It looks like AMD isn't dropping support for the AM4 platform anytime soon. Hopefully, the AM5 platform will get the same extended support.

While Star Wars Outlaws was expected to launch in early 2024 at one point, the game was delayed to later in the year. However, the game may still arrive well before the holiday season, with recent developments indicating a release date announcement is coming soon.

Star Wars Outlaws has now been rated in both South Korea and Australia, brandishing a ‘Mature' rating from Australia's classification board. As Insider Gaming points out, this would be roughly equivalent to a ‘Teen' rating from the ESRB.

Typically, ratings like this pop up a few months ahead of a game's release. It has previously been claimed that despite delays, the game is being planned for the first half of this year. These recent ratings support that idea.

If true, then Ubisoft will be revealing more of the game and starting its marketing push quite soon, ahead of a potential June release. With that said, Ubisoft has never been shy about delaying projects, to the point where announced release dates often can't be trusted, so we'll have to wait and see how it goes. On the positive side, we have not heard anything about development troubles with this project, so it could be progressing well and ahead of schedule.

KitGuru Says: May the 4th is coming up and typically, Disney likes to use this date to make announcements for Star Wars projects across all forms of media, from film and TV to comics, books and games. With that in mind, it seems highly likely that we'll get release date news around that time.

Earlier this week, new rumours surfaced suggesting that Xbox is working on a new gaming handheld to rival systems like the Steam Deck and Windows-based alternatives. Having been down this road before, I didn't put much stock in those rumours. However, a newly published interview with Phil Spencer is making the Xbox handheld seem inevitable.

Phil Spencer has been fairly open about his desire to better support the emerging handheld gaming market. Recently, reports claimed that Microsoft actually has several prototypes of an Xbox handheld being tested behind closed doors. Now, in a new interview with Polygon, Spencer talks up the idea of an Xbox handheld further.

“I brought [the Legion Go] with me to GDC. I’m on the airplane and I have this list of everything that makes it not feel like an Xbox. Forget about the brand. More like: Are all of my games there? Do all my games show up with the save that I want?”, Spencer told Polygon. “I want to be able to boot into the Xbox app in a full screen, but in a compact mode. And all of my social is there. Like I want it to feel like the dash of my Xbox”.

Crucially, Spencer also confirms that the Xbox hardware team is experimenting with “different hardware form factors”. We know one of these is an Xbox handheld, but whether or not it will run a full version of Windows, or a new, scaled back version similar to the Xbox console.

In the near-term, Microsoft is already working with companies like Asus and Lenovo to help create new features to enable better usage on handheld PCs already on the market. As we've seen from Microsoft many times in the past, the company may opt to not go through with its own hardware, instead choosing to support third-party hardware through access to software and services.

KitGuru Says: I've been eyeing a Steam Deck OLED for a while but Windows certainly has its advantages when it comes to game compatibility, especially for certain multiplayer titles. It would be interesting to see an Xbox handheld but it would need serious work on the software side as right now, Windows on a handheld PC does not feel great to use. A ‘gaming focused' UI that boots up, with quick access to Xbox, Steam, Epic Games and other launchers, is key. Like the Steam Deck, the option to switch into ‘desktop' mode could also be included.

Everyone has their own favourite Sonic the Hedgehog game. For some, it's the classic 2D titles. For others, it may be Sonic Adventure, Unleashed, or even one of the more modern releases. Arguably one of the best entries in the long running series is 2003’s Sonic Heroes. Initially released for the GameCube and PS2, the 20 year old title is seemingly set to get a remake.

As reported by known insiders ‘Necro Felipe Lima’ and ‘Midori’, a Sonic heroes remake is currently in development. Said to be using Unreal Engine for the project, the game is targeting current-gen systems only – meaning PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor.

While no concrete launch window was provided, the leakers did suggest that a 2025 release is likely, assuming development goes smoothly of course.

Sonic Heroes has so much more to offer than just its iconic theme song and so hopefully this remake (the first of its kind for Sonic) manages to be both a critical and commercial success.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Sonic Heroes? Are you surprised to see them using Unreal Engine instead of the Hedgehog Engine? What is your favourite Sonic Game? Let us know down below.

As Unreal Engine becomes more and more ubiquitous, players have started to appreciate some of the industry’s more unique and bespoke internally-developed game engines. RGG Studio of Yakuza / Like a Dragon fame have dabbled with Unreal in the past, though they have now reaffirmed their commitment to the Dragon Engine.

In an interview with the Japanese publication Type.jp – and translated by ResetEra user ‘Dooble’ – Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s tech lead Yutaka Ito spoke on the studio’s use of its bespoke Dragon Engine, saying:

“when creating ‘Ryu ga Gotoku’ we absolutely must not do away with the Dragon Engine , and we will continue to develop in-house engines.”

Ito continued, “Dragon Engine concentrates its development resources on the functions necessary for ‘Ryu ga Gotoku’, and the biggest advantage is that new features can be added quickly. If you are using a general-purpose engine, you can send an email to support and get a response in about 3 days, but if you ask the programmer next to you, it will only take 5 seconds. I think this difference is huge.”

As mentioned, RGG Studio have used Epic’s Unreal Engine for the 2023 spin-off / remake ‘Like a Dragon Ishin’. That said, the remainder of the studio’s titles since 2016 have utilised RGG’s own Dragon Engine to a great deal of success.

Hopefully the team continues to develop their own tech for the sake of Like a Dragon and the industry as a whole.

Diablo 4's anticipated ray-tracing update arrives this week, bringing ray-traced shadows and reflections to the land of Sanctuary. This isn't the only game getting RTX feature support this week though, with DLSS also heading to several other major games.

Diablo 4's ray-tracing update drops this week, adding to previously available features like DLSS 2 or DLSS 3 with Frame Generation and Nvidia Reflex. Alone in the Dark, a new reboot of the classic horror franchise, is also available this week with DLSS 2, allowing RTX graphics card users to save some performance without sacrificing much in the way of visual fidelity.

Here are the full bullet points from Nvidia, including performance details for new releases like Horizon Forbidden West and Outpost: Infinity Siege:

  • Diablo IV – new update is available now which adds ray-traced effects to Sanctuary. The game is already accelerated with DLSS 3 Frame Generation and Reflex. The update adds ray traced reflection and shadows. With a GeForce RTX 40 Series GPU, you can multiply performance by up to 3X thanks to DLSS 3.
  • Outpost: Infinity Siege – launches today with DLSS 3 Frame Generation , DLSS Super Resolution and Reflex. At 4K, with every setting maxed out, DLSS 3 will multiply performance by an average of 3.3X in Outpost: Infinity Siege. With this massive frame rate boost, GeForce RTX 4090 users can hit 160 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER exceeds 120 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER tops 110 FPS, and the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER surpasses 100 FPS, giving GeForce RTX 40 Series gamers the definitive experience at the highest resolution, with everything cranked.
  • Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition – available now with DLSS 3 Frame Generation, DLSS 2 Super Resolution, DLAA and Reflex. At 4K, with every setting maxed out, GeForce RTX 40 Series gamers are able to double their Horizon Forbidden West™ Complete Edition frame rates by enabling DLSS 3 with just a few clicks. On the GeForce RTX 4090, performance tops 180 FPS; the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER surpasses 144 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti speeds past 120 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER exceeds 110 FPS, and the GeForce RTX 4070 runs at over 90 FPS.

Ray tracing has become a critical component in the gaming industry. However, this technology often comes at a severe performance cost, especially when GPUs have limited VRAM capacity. As a result, developers have been exploring ways to optimise ray tracing for GPUs with limited memory.

Microsoft's new patent (via Tom's Hardware) addresses this issue by increasing ray tracing performance for GPUs with limited memory. The patent proposes a design philosophy currently used in video games with 3D worlds, where detail settings are lowered the further away an object, NPC or part of the map is. This cost-cutting strategy improves performance by reducing visual quality in regions where it is less pronounced. The same can be applied to ray tracing, reducing quality and detail on the less-noticeable effects.

This approach could benefit GPUs with less VRAM and consoles, allowing them to run more ray tracing titles. Even high-end GPUs with plenty of VRAM may benefit from certain parts of this technique when ray tracing is too demanding.

Technically, modern RT implementations overcome this by relying on upscaling methods such as DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or checkerboarding (console upscaling) to mask the performance disadvantage that ray tracing entails. However, such a system would provide developers with many more options for optimising their applications.

KitGuru says: Most developers are looking to support features like ray-tracing nowadays, so the need for improving performance on accessibly-priced hardware remains high. Perhaps something like this could help move the needle a bit.

Intel's upcoming discrete graphics architecture, Battlemage, remains shrouded in secrecy. However, that might start changing soon. Recently, two unknown GPUs believed to be based on the Battlemage architecture were spotted on the SiSoftware Sandra website.

According to posts on the SiSoftware Sandra website (via @miktdt), Intel is currently working on two Xe2 processors with 20 Xe-Cores (160 EU) and 24 Xe-Cores (192 EU), respectively. Both processors would have 11.6GB or 12GB of memory (most likely the latter). Considering the VRAM they pack, something like a 192-bit memory bus is very likely. Clock speeds also look relatively low at just 1.8GHz, but that could be explained by the fact that they are engineering samples.

Regarding GPU performance, the purported Intel Battlemage Xe2-LPG GPUs scored 7,231 Mpix/s (192-CU) and 6,030.66 Mpix/s (160-CU). In contrast, the Arc A770 achieves an average of 11,058 Mpix/s, while the Arc A750 achieves 9,927 Mpix/s. Given that these are early figures, their performance at launch should be much better.

Unofficial claims suggest the Battlemage GPU series will have a next-generation memory subsystem, possibly GDDR7, and better ray tracing capabilities. Moreover, it's expected that the architecture may have twice the number of shader units per Xe-Core, which should provide higher performance.

AMD recently released a new driver (24.3.1) that brings full overclocking support to the Radeon RX 7900 GRE “Golden Rabbit Edition” graphics card.

This card was previously only available in the Chinese market but is now available worldwide. At launch, reviewers (including us) noted issues with overclocking, which resulted in performance increases that fell short of expectations. AMD identified the problem as an erroneous memory tuning limit and promised to fix it with a driver update.

As noted by TechPowerUP, the latest driver release delivers on this promise by correcting the RAM overclocking problem on the RX 7900 GRE. The driver update rewrites the overclocking limitations in the card's VBIOS, a much simpler solution than updating the firmware for all RX 7900 GRE variants. In addition, the new driver includes a clock limit override, which changes the power limit during bootup.

The updated driver allows RX 7900 GRE cards to reach memory speeds of up to 3000MHz (24Gbps), a significant increase from the previous limit of 2316MHz (18.5Gbps).

Over the past year or so, Ubisoft has slowly but surely been bringing its Epic Games Store / Ubisoft Connect exclusive titles to Steam. Following the likes of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Division 2 and Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Ubisoft’s The Crew Motorfest is finally set to arrive on the Platform next month.

With the 3rd Season of The Crew Motorfest well underway, Ubisoft took to Twitter to reveal that last year’s The Crew Motorfest is set to come to Steam a little over 6 months from its initial release date – dropping onto Valve’s storefront on the 18th of April.

The game’s Steam page has now gone live, with fans able to wishlist the title. So far, no price has been listed – though the game is currently on sale for 50% off via the Epic Games Store meaning Ubisoft will likely offer some sort of launch discount when it does arrive on Steam.

For the uninitiated, The Crew Motorfest is the 3rd entry in Ubisoft’s arcade racing franchise which has differentiated itself from the competition by allowing players to take control over a whole host of vehicles, not just cars.

Furthermore, the seamless way in which you can switch from a car to a boat or plane means that there is very little downtime – great for a racing series.

It’ll be interesting to see how the game performs commercially upon its Steam release. We won’t have long to wait in order to find out.
