Destiny 2’s console launch has proven a success

Earlier this week, Destiny 2 managed to surpass 1.2 million concurrent players on console alone, reaching 1.3 million as of developer Bungie’s blog update last night. Publisher Activision has continued to share the good news about Destiny 2’s success by revealing the console launch press release.

“With franchise pre-order records broken, and record day-one performance on PlayStation Store, it’s exciting to see engagement at the highest ever week-one concurrency for the franchise. “Destiny 2 is off to a strong start as the #1 console gaming launch week of the year to date,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision.  “With the PC version yet to ship, Destiny 2 sets the stage for being one of the biggest video game entertainment events of the year.”

Oddly enough, there is just one game that shares this similar success, with the PC exclusive PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds surpassing these milestones in giant strides, and yet both PUBG and Destiny 2 await release on other platforms.

“We are blown away that we've had eight days in a row in Destiny 2 where we've seen more than one-million concurrent players grace our worlds,” adds Pete Parsons, head of Bungie, as well as being the “#1 console game viewed on Twitch by minutes watched.”

Activision didn’t include sales figures in its press release, but hopefully we will find out more when the PC version launches on Battle.net come October 24th. Looking ahead, Destiny 2 DLC has leaked under the name of The Curse of Osiris and is expected to land three months ahead of its 6th September launch, at least on console.

KitGuru Says: I still feel a little burned by the DLC model of the first one to be fully invested in getting the PC launch when it’s available, but I can’t say I’m not tempted. It does look to have improved on a lot of areas that were lacking. What are you experiences with Destiny 2? Do you plan to wait for the PC version?
