Borderlands 3 September release date and Epic Games exclusivity confirmed

Last week, Gearbox Studios announced that not only would Borderlands 1, 2 and the Pre-Sequel be getting upgrades this year, but Borderlands 3 is also on the way. A leak earlier this week revealed that the game would be launching in September and that it would be an Epic Games Store exclusive. Not everyone trusted this leak, but today everything was officially confirmed.

The full trailer for Borderlands 3 has now gone live, announcing the game's September 13th release date for PC, Xbox One and PS4. On the PC side of things, you'll need to get it through the Epic Games Store.

Now that doesn't mean that the game won't be available on Steam eventually. Following the initial leaks earlier this week, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, took to Twitter to defend short-period timed exclusives. He also added a reminder that 2K Games is the publisher for Borderlands 3 and has direct control over distribution, platforms, price points, availability etc:

“2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships. Please direct all inquiries regarding any of those topics to 2K. We are *just* the talent. As a customer, I’m happy to shop in different stores – already do! I’ve bought games from Xbox, Playstation, Switch, Steam, Origin, GOG, Humble, Uplay, Epic and other stores. To me, exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short – say, six months. For what it’s worth, 2K’s decisions aside, myself and the team at Gearbox have a very keen interest in cross-platform play. We believe multi-platform support is a pre-requisite and Epic’s leadership with cross platform support is helpful to our interests there.”

KitGuru Says: Borderlands 3 will be on Steam eventually and judging by what Pitchford has said so far, it could happen as early as April 2020. Will any of you be picking up Borderlands 3 at launch? Or will you be waiting for it to hit Steam next year first?
