Intel is well prepared for 10nm, 2nd gen Ice Lake CPUs already taped in

Intel has announced a few times already that it is planning on releasing its first generation 10nm processors before the end of 2017 but it seems that the company has also been making solid progress on 10nm Gen 2. Today, Intel announced that its ninth generation Cannon Lake CPUs were still on track but added that 10nm Ice Lake chips have already been taped in.

In a couple of Twitter posts made recently, Intel said: “Another milestone for 10nm: Cannon Lake on track and we’ve now taped in Ice Lake, our 2nd-generation 10nm product”. The company then continued to hammer home its position as a ‘leader in 10nm technology' by saying: “Ice Lake, our 2nd generation 10nm processor, is taped in. Intel continues to lead in 10nm technology”.

Before 10nm Cannon Lake lands, Intel will be launching Coffee Lake, which will be the company's last revision of 14nm technology. We should be hearing more official details about Coffee Lake in a few months time.

KitGuru Says: We have been on 14nm CPU tech for some time now so it will be nice to see what the 10nm die shrink will bring to the table late this year/early next year. We will be seeing Intel's low-power CPUs launch first though, so 10nm may take a while to land for custom PC builders.
