GlobalFoundries on track to deliver 7nm FinFET, volume production begins in 2018

GlobalFoundries has today announced that it will soon be open for business as far as 7nm FinFET is concerned. GF's jump to 7nm (7LP) FinFET semiconductor technology delivers a 40 percent generational performance boost to meet the demands of cloud servers, networking infrastructure and mobile processors.

Design kits are available now but the first customer products based on 7LP FinFET are expected to arrive before the end of June next year. From there, GlobalFoundries will ramp up volume production in the second half of 2018.

GloFlo first announced its plans to develop 7nm FinFET in September last year and thanks to improvements at both the transistor and process levels, 7LP technology is performing above initial expectations. Right now, it is expected that this new tech will deliver 40 percent more processing power and twice the area scaling compared to 14nm FinFET.

GlobalFoundries' Senior VP of SMOS, Gregg Bartlett explained that the company's “7nm FinFET development is on track” and there are “multiple product tapeouts planned in 2018”. Beyond that though, 5nm plans are already being drawn up in an effort to stick to the company's ‘world-class' roadmap.

KitGuru Says: It will be a while before 7nm is relevant to consumer technology but it's always good to see companies making new advancements and pushing forward.
