Nintendo’s President eschews rumours of a Switch successor or console discount

Last year, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé denied rumours that the Switch was due for an iterative upgrade, but the timing of the rebuttal left many sceptical that it was to preserve the company’s Holiday sales. Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa has since reiterated the sentiment, stating that the firm’s plan is to concentrate on its lofty sales goals.

Despite doubts from analysts, Nintendo has stood by its two-year sales target for the Switch, hoping to hit 20 million units shipped by the end of the fiscal year. Citing successful Holiday sales and the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Furukawa is confident that Nintendo’s goal is within reach and will remain the company’s focus for the time being.

“It is an extremely ambitious, but worthwhile achievement,” Furukawa said in an interview with The Sankei News, translation via Nintendo Everything. “So, we will maintain this goal. Nintendo Switch is our primary sales objective, and we are not considering a successor or a price cut at this time.”

Of course, a successor and an iterative upgrade aren’t necessarily the same thing. Sony might not consider the PlayStation 4 Pro a successor to the original PS4, given that it co-exists within the same generation and runs the same games. This terminology leaves room for any number of things to happen in the Switch’s lifecycle, but it’s clear that Nintendo is focused on the one we currently have for the foreseeable future.

KitGuru Says: The rapid adoption rate of the Switch would surely cause outrage if Nintendo released an iterative upgrade so soon into the console’s life. But it would be nice to see a price drop eventually. What would you like to see in an iterative upgrade or successor to the Nintendo Switch?
