Riot games disputes DOTA 2 player number statistics

Yesterday saw DFC Intelligence, a video game statistics and research firm, release a list of figures showing DotA 2 as the most played “core” pc game. Riot Games disagrees however and has cited publicly available statistics to back up the fact that League of Legends, not DotA 2, is the biggest game out there at the moment.

While DFC didn't release any actual numbers, it initially claimed that DotA 2 had surpassed its MOBA rival, but Riot came to the table with more than just claims. It pointed at its own internal statistics and Valve published ones, showing that over 500,000 gamers play LoL at peak times, concurrently during a single day on the EU West Shard League of Legends server – that doesn't even take into consideration the North America servers, or EU East. Comparatively, DotA 2's peak player numbers are around 326,000.

Now this is a game I want to play

PCGamesN did a bit of research of its own though and dug up Xfire stats, which show League of Legends players racking up over 83,000 hours of gameplay per day. DotA 2 on the other hand only manages 6,685 hours. Not even close.

I don't think anyone is arguing that DotA 2 isn't a big, well made and popular game, but it's still got a lot of ground to make up against League of Legends which has dominated the MOBA scene for a few years now.

KitGuru Says: While I enjoy League of Legends a couple of times a year, I tapped out a few months ago and have been going on an indie rampage. I finished The Room yesterday, that was fun. Now I'm playing Kenshi. What about the rest of you?
