Intel Sapphire Rapids HEDT CPUs rumoured to use W790 chipset and release in Q2 2022

Intel hasn't launched new HEDT processors since late 2019, and according to a recently leaked roadmap, anyone waiting for them might still have to wait a year. By looking at the roadmap, it seems Intel is developing a new workstation HEDT platform based on Sapphire Rapids for Q2 2022.

The latest HEDT processors released by Intel were the X299-based Cascade Lake-X. Launched in November 2019, the Cascade Lake-X processors are a Skylake-X refresh, so they still use the 14nm process node.

Since the Cascade Lake-X debut, Intel has shared nothing about a new HEDT platform, but the roadmap received by VideoCardz suggests that might soon change. According to the roadmap, Intel looks to be preparing new HEDT CPUs based on the Sapphire Rapids platform by Q2 2022.

As for the chipset, the new Intel HEDT processors will reportedly use the W790 instead of a traditional X-named chipset, which Intel has used for many generations.

Something else that caught our eye is that the Sapphire Rapids HEDT CPUs will probably be paired with 700-series motherboards. Considering Alder Lake-S CPUs will launch alongside the 600-series motherboards, it's quite possible that Intel's next-gen HEDT processor release date may be close to that of the Raptor Lake-S CPUs, also expected to use 700-series motherboards.

KitGuru says: Like Intel, AMD hasn't delivered a new HEDT CPU architecture since late 2019. However, the company is reportedly working on new Ryzen Threadripper processors for later this year. If this is all true, Intel will be a bit late in answering next-gen Threadripper.
