Canon launch C300 for pro movie makers

Canon have launched a new high end video camera which is marketed directly at professional movie makers. The C300 was showcased at an event in Los Angeles yesterday, attended by Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.

At the event, Canon showcased the camera with some lenses which they are aiming at a professional audience. The C300 follows the successful 5D Mark II which has been well received by independent movie makers in the last few years.

The C300 will be priced with a price tag of $20,000, expensive for a consumer, but not for the professional sector.

The full range of Canon EF lenses are compatible with the camera, although they are releasing two new zoom lenses which will cost $45,000 and $47,000.

The C300 obviously has full support for 1080p recording, via a Super 35mm CMOS sensor and supports ISO ranges from 320 to 20,000 hinting at great low light performance. It can accept two CF cards and has an optional time code display. The C300 will have built in ND filters.

Martin Scorsese said “I really believe these new tools that Canon has created allow for a much closer, more intimate relationship between the filmmakers and the world they are filming than ever before.”

Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai said that the new camera delivers exceptional performance and will offer the ‘unique quality and warmth of film'.

Kitguru says: The camera will be available at the end of January 2012 and Canon are hoping that sales will be strong.
