Blackberry filter out porn in Indonesia

Research In Motion have agreed to filter out pornographic content on their Blackberry devices for all users in Indonesia, according to a government spokesperson.

This has been a forced compliance as Indonesia have threatened to revoke Blackberry's license to operate in the country, the world's most populous Muslim nation. Research in Motion worked out the details of the deal in a meeting with government officials on Monday.

Gregory Wade, RIM's managing director for Southeast Asia said the company had discussed the concerns with the six operators who support the Blackberry service in Indonesia and that they will be implementing the filtering together.

The Ministry of Communication and Information spokesman Gatot Dewabroto said the company promised to do this within 100 hours of the meeting ahead of the governments deadline on January 21st. The government said they will not extend the deadline.

Indonsia say that Research In Motion get around $251 million a year from the countries 3 million Blackberry users so their compliance certainly made business sense.

KitGuru says: A tough decision for RIM, but Indonesia have very strict guidelines.
