Microsoft record revenue, but short of Apple by $4.14 billion

Well we never thought this situation would be reversed but Microsoft continue to be outperformed by the shiny fruit maker in Cupertino. Microsoft reported record revenue of $16.20 billion for the quarter ended September the 30th, a 25% increase on the same period last year.

While $16.20 billion is a huge amount of money by anyone's estimations, Apple's intake was $20.34 billion with a net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion for the companys fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended September 25th 2010.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer pumping up the audience: yes he is worth a few billion.

“This was an exceptional quarter, combining solid enterprise growth and continued strong consumer demand for Office 2010, Windows 7, and Xbox 360 consoles and games,” said Peter Klein, CFO at Microsoft. “Our ability to grow revenue while continuing to control costs allowed us to deliver another quarter of year-over-year margin expansion.”

Obviously much of the difference could be placed on the fact that Apple mainly sell hardware products while Microsoft mainly sell licenses for software, but this means that Microsoft can easily surpass Apple in regards to profit ratio's.

KitGuru says: Apple need to keep inventing new products to keep these staggering figures alive while Microsoft need to rely on software related products for the majority of their revenue. To be honest we wouldn't mind shares in either company right now.
