LG announces a new 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D Max

While the LG Optimus 3D was not an overwhelming sucess when it was debuted last year it did open up a new market of smartphones, namely 3D smartphones. Now LG has announced the sucessor to the Optimus 3D claiming it is “real proof of LG’s commitment to portable 3D entertainment.” This successor will be known as the LG Optimus 3D Max.

Like many other smartphones the Optimus 3D Max did not escape its fair share of leaks, being seen earlier in a press image and specifications list.

Many of those leaked specifications turned out to be true, the Optimus Max 3D has a 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual-core chipset and a 4.3 inch 3D 800×480 display. It will also be the first phone to be announced with Gorilla Glass 2, which is 20% thinner while maintaining the same durability of the original. There will be 8 GB of on-board storage and a satisfying 1 GB of RAM.

To take the crown as 3D champion the display will be glasses free 3D but also have dual 5 MP cameras on the back for 3D pictures. Like the rumours have previously said it will weigh 148 grams and have a waistline of 9.6 mm.

There is also NFC support which will be compatabile with LG's Tag+ system, this is where you can swipe the phone over a NFC sticker and it can automatically turn on Bluetooth and change it to silent mode.

The LG Optimus 3D Max will launch in Korea in March and will be available in Europe and around the world soon after. It will also get an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich “shortly after the launch.”

Kitguru says: While not being a massive upgrade over the original Optimus 3D, it appears to offer adequate features to be worth the upgrade for die-hard 3D phone fans.
