Samsung overtake Apple mobile phone sales in Australia

According to reports from IDC, Samsung have leapfrogged Apple in Australia to take the top spot in the mobile market. Their victory over Apple to overturn the ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been the stepping stone to claiming No1 sales position.

The IDC report says that Android now hold 49% of the entire smartphone market share in Australia and Apple's iOS has claimed 36% of the market share. Analyst Yee-Kuan Lau says “While Apple’s iPhone shipments slowed down in preparation for its new iPhone 4S launch in New Zealand, Samsung led the smartphone market for the first time with some of its flagship models such as Galaxy S II and Galaxy 5 performing very well.”

Interestingly, IDC added that the general customer shift in Australia and New Zealand seemed to be moving from expensive smartphones to low cost Android handhelds.

Kitguru says: Apple won't be too happy with this report.
