‘Lewd acts’ force LinkNYC kiosks to end web browsing

The owners of the smart-tablet equipped LinkNYC Kiosks which have sprung up over the past year to replace the city's many antiquated payphones, have been forced to disable web browsing. This comes after reports of people watching pornography, masturbating and performing other lewd acts on New York's streets.

The idea behind the kiosks was to offer some of the connected functionality of smartphones and tablets to those who perhaps don't own such hardware, or have temporarily lost access to it. They offer free web access, free phone calls, device charging and maps for those that need them. Until lately too, they allowed web browsing, but that stops as of today.

Announced on the LinkNYC site (via Ars), the developers assured fans that many of the kiosk's features would remain, including the ability to utilise its extremely fast Wi-Fi in the local area. However it would stop web browsing to curtail some of the less savoury actions of its users, while it explores potential alternatives like time limit caps.

Filters have been in place for a few months now, making it a little more difficult to access porn on the kiosks, but as with anyone who has been confronted with such filters in the past, users have found them not too difficult to get around.

The problem seems to mostly stem from homeless people utilising the kiosks. While that was certainly one of the intended uses – since they are often without some of the more connected electronics we all enjoy – the problem of masturbation and public nudity with those transient individuals is less desirable.

While there are certainly problems to iron out though, the kiosks are proving popular. The developers report that with over 400 installed in three boroughs of New York, some 475,000 people have used them for a total of 21 million sessions.

KitGuru Says: These do seem quite a good way to offer the continued and expanded functionality of traditional phone booths, but clearly some of these problems could do with some clever solutions.

KitGuru had a stonkingly successful CES 2024, however there is one small gap in our coverage that needs to be addressed. We gave plenty of coverage to Intel's new Core Ultra range of Meteor Lake laptop processors but appeared to give AMD the cold shoulder, and it is now time to fix that apparent oversight.
