Windows 10 upgrade ads now removed from 7 and 8.1

Microsoft's ‘free upgrade' period for Windows 10 ended some time ago and while Microsoft did promise to stop nagging Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users about upgrades after July, the ‘Get Windows 10' app had yet to be removed from many machines. However, it looks like Microsoft is finally ready to move on as an update began rolling out this week that wipes the Windows 10 upgrade app from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems.

Update KB3184143 began rolling out yesterday for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, which removes the ‘Get Windows 10' app from systems. So if you decided to stick to an older OS, you should now be able to reclaim some hard drive space.

This update also means that if you managed to avoid Microsoft's aggressive upgrade tactics, you should now be able to rest easy knowing that nothing Windows 10 related should be left on your system after this.

Theoretically, if you want to upgrade to Windows 10 now, you would have to pay for it. However, there are some reports indicating that Windows 7 and 8.1 serial keys can still be used to activate Windows 10, so you may not have missed your chance just yet.
