Microsoft is ending production on the Surface 3 this year

Microsoft has revealed that it plans to stop manufacturing its current entry-level Surface device by the end of the year. The Surface 3 first launched in May of last year at a lower price point to try and capture those who want a tablet that could also act as a laptop for productivity, with a full-blown copy of Windows installed.

Recently, ZDNet confirmed that stock has been running low on the Surface 3 for a while and Microsoft will eventually cease making them all together at the end of 2016.

“Since launching Surface 3 over a year ago, we have seen strong demand and satisfaction amongst our customers,” Microsoft said in a statement. “Inventory is now limited and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devices.”

Right now, we don't know much about Microsoft's future plans for Surface tablets, but apparently there will be a new Surface early 2017 after Intel launches its new processors. Once the Surface 3 disappears, the Surface Pro 4 and the more expensive Surface Book will still be available.

KitGuru Says: It is a shame to see Microsoft writing off its entry-level Surface tablet just over a year after it first launched. However, there will be new Surface hardware early next year, so it won't be too long before we see something new come along. Do any of you happen to own a Surface?
