LaCie unveils world’s first external HDD with reversible USB 3.1 connector

LaCie, a subsidiary of Seagate Technology, on Tuesday introduced one of the industry’s first external hard disk drive with reversible USB 3.1 type-C interconnection. The HDD is designed specifically for modern systems as well as the latest MacBook from Apple.

The new LaCie Mobile Drive will be available in 500GB (slim form-factor), 1TB and 2TB capacities next quarter. Since the storage device packs a 2.5” hard disk drive inside, it cannot really utilize performance benefits the USB 3.1 (10Gb/s) can provide. The manufacturer declares that its transfer rate is just around 100MB/s.

The main advantage that the new LaCie Mobile Drive has is native compatibility with Apple’s latest MacBook, which only has one USB 3.1 port with reversible plug orientation. The LaCie Mobile Drive also features stylish, sophisticated aluminum finish by Porsche Design, which will match design of Apple’s latest ultra-thin personal computer.

The LaCie Mobile Drive works with all modern PCs, but was designed primarily for Macs and is Time Machine compatible. Thanks to the included adapter cable, it is even compatible with standard USB 3.0 (type-A) or USB 2.0 ports.

LaCie did not reveal recommended pricing of its new Mobile Drives with USB 3.1 interconnection, but keeping in mind that this is a premium manufacturer and the external HDDs are one of the first drives to feature USB type-C connector, do not expect price of the drives to be low.

KitGuru Says: The new LaCie Mobile Drive HDDs are nothing but impressive. They feature USB 3.1 type-C interconnection, stylish, yet rugged design as well as massive capacity. Unfortunately, performance of the new HDDs is too low by modern standards.
