Synology has released two new enterprise-grade M.2 NVMe SSDs for data caching and two high-bandwidth NICs to increase the performance of its NAS storage solutions.

Available with 800GB of storage capacity both the SNV3400-800G and the SNV3500-800G are used for caching large data sets, increasing the performance of HDD-based arrays in a NAS. With a rated random read/write performance of 375K/70K IOPS and an endurance rating of 0.68 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) and 500TBW, the SNV3000 series SSDs are compatible with Synology's DiskStation Manager, allowing users to monitor their drives performance, lifetime analytics, and lifespan.

Julien Chen, product manager at Synology, said that these drives are the company's answer to the “growing need for cost-effective but high performance and high capacity storage”. Aimed at heavy-caching applications such as virtualisation, high-traffic volume database storage, AI, and HPC, the SNV3000 SSDs can store pools of hot data and make use of the NVMe SSD cache benefits, delivering an outstanding performance improvement to your storage servers.

Synology E10G21-F2 and E25G21-F2 NICs were designed to increase the throughput and performance of compatible Synology systems, offering either a 10Gb connection with the E10G21-F2 or a 25Gb connection with the E25G21-F2. Ideally used on bandwidth-heavy tasks such as distributed computing, AI, and big data applications, these NICs are also useful to allow more concurrent users connected to a centralised storage application or to backup a large number of devices faster.

The E25G21-F2 is backward-compatible with 10GbE SFP+ equipment, making it easier and less costly to implement it in a hybrid environment. The Synology SNV3000 SSD series, and the E10G21-F2 and E25G21-F2 NICs are available now, backed by a 5-year warranty.

KitGuru says: Are you in need of a new high-speed NIC such as the E10G21-F2 or the E25G21-F2? What do you think of Synology SNV3000 series cache-oriented SSDs?

Look no further

QNAP's TVS-872XT is a high-performance 8-bay NAS that comes with 1GbE, 10GbE and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity and with a pair of PCIe and M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots thrown in for good measure. Is it a good buy at almost £2000?

Sitting under QNAP's SMB banner, the TVS-*72XT line-up is made up of three models, the 4-bay TVS-472XT (Intel Pentium Gold G5400T, 4GB DDR4 memory), 6-bay TVS-672XT (Intel Core i3-8100T, 8GB DDR4) and the flagship 8-bay TVS-872XT we are looking at here.

At the heart of the TVS-872XT-i5-16G, to give its full mouthful of a name, is an Intel Core i5 8400T processor. This runs at 1.7GHz (burst up to 3.3GHz) and is backed by 16GB of DDR4-2666 memory. The motherboard supports up to 32GB of memory via a pair of SODIMM slots.

Internally the NAS brings a pair of PCIe slots and support for a pair of M.2 SSDs. One of the PCIe slots is Gen3 x16 and it's this one that houses the two port Thunderbolt 3 card. The other slot is Gen 3 x4. The two M.2 slots support 2280 format NVMe SSDs and there are lists of compatible cards and drives for all these slots on QNAP's website.

Looking to upgrade your business networked storage and back up solution? QNAP's new quad-core, 16-bay, twin 10 GbE SFP+ NAS is now available and it comes packing a whole host of features. With support for up to 16GB of internal RAM, hardware accelerated encryption and support for all of QNAP's latest software developments.

The TS-1635 has space for sixteen drives, so its storage capacity could be in the tens of terabytes if you're looking for maximum capacity. Any data on there should be transferable at high speed too, thanks to the high-bandwidth Ethernet connections and SSD file caching for the most oft-used data. The TS-1635 delivers up to 1228 MB/s and 874 MB/s sustained read and write speeds, respectively.

Using Virtual JBOD software, users can also network this NAS up with other QNAP external enclosures to maximise storage capacity – a functionality that QNAP believes will be perfect for those looking to store masses of recorded video, such as security footage. QNAP has a software package for that, known as Surveillance Station and with support for eight camera channels, you can use this NAS as a management and storage hub for that system.

If you'd rather though, you can turn the TS-1635 into an IoT cloud platform, or an email server with full search capabilities. The possibilities are all there with a NAS like this.

Hardware specifications peg it as having an Alpine AL-514 ARM Cortex A15 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, twin 10GbE port and a pair of Gigabit RJ45 ports, a single PCIe 2.0 expansion slot, three USB 3.0 ports, a 3.5mm audio out and a single speaker.

As much as QNAP cites this NAS as affordable though, don't expect it to be cheap. Span has it currently at £1,155 for the base, 4GB of RAM model. You can opt for the 8GB option, but you'll need to spend more than £100 more: £1,262. If you want 16GB you'll have to do the upgrading yourself after purchase.

KitGuru Says: As much as the prices are coming down for these sort of high-level NAS devices, especially those with 10GbE potential, over a grand for a fancy networked system is a lot, especially when you'll need to factor in drive prices too. This still seems like a purely business consideration, or perhaps a wealthy individual building a secure camera, backup system or similar.
