While AMD has been busy launching desktop, HEDT and mobile processors in volume over the last six or seven months, it feels like we have been waiting an eternity for Intel to officially unveil its next-generation desktop CPUs. We have heard plenty of rumours over the past few months, however, there is still some uncertainty of when the new Intel 10th generation desktop line up will become available.

The latest Intel 10th gen desktop rumour comes from serial Twitter leaks specialist and PC enthusiast TUM_APISAK, which apparently shows a Futuremark screenshot of a system that contains an Intel Comet Lake-S 10th generation Core i7-10700K processor, confirming the base and boost core frequency along with the core count.

TUM_APISAK revealed the potential Core i7-10700K core frequencies on Twitter running in a system containing an ECS Z490H6-A2 motherboard. The reported stock core speed shows a respectable 3.8GHz frequency, while the maximum turbo boost frequency is listed at almost 5.3GHz (5,291 MHz) which sounds like it will be pretty handy for gamers, especially if the CPU can be overclocked to run that at that speed across all cores.

As well as the impressive core frequency, the Intel Core i7 10700K features 8 logical cores and HyperThreading to enable 16 threads, the same as Intel’s current 9th generation powerhouse, the Core i9-9900K, which is still regarded as one of, if not the best CPU choice for gamers. It is likely the Core i7-10700K will compete with the likes of the AMD Ryzen 3700X and 3800X processors, not only in terms of specification but it may hopefully come in at a similar price, although Intel is yet to announce its official 10th gen desktop pricing structure.

KitGuru says: Intel is expected to release it’s 10th generation desktop processors around April this year, it will be interesting to see how the new line up stacks up against AMD’s latest Ryzen CPUs and whether we will see much performance improvement in gaming. What do you guys think of this potential Core i7 10700K with a turbo frequency of 5.3GHz? and what do you expect in terms of performance from Intel 10th generation desktop processors?

Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen snippets of information from motherboard vendors to suggest that 10th generation Intel desktop processors and its new Z490 platform may be on the horizon. Rumours were stepped up again yesterday when it was noted that ASRock has listed its potential Z490 motherboard range in an official piece of software.

Just last week, the potential Z490 motherboard lineup from MSI was spotted on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) database, which fuelled rumours that Intel was close to launching its 10th generation Comet Lake-S desktop processors. According to ComputerBase, Intel’s motherboard partners are ready for Comet Lake-S, however, its is rumoured that the upcoming Intel 10-core part isn’t running a smooth as expected, so a release is being held back until Intel irons out any problems.

While the EEC database can sometimes throw up hardware listings that never come to fruition, official motherboard manufacturer software is usually pretty accurate when it comes to listing new products. That is exactly what the guys over at VideoCardz noticed yesterday when they were browsing through the files of the latest version of ASRock’s Polychrome Sync application.

During a simple search of the files from the new ASRock Polychrome Sync, VideoCardz found references to a stack of new potential motherboard SKUs from ASRock, with Z490, H470 and W480 mentioned in the file names, which are the expected chipsets to support Intel’s 10th generation processors and could mean we are getting closer to a Comet Lake-S release.

The ASRock Polychrome Sync files show a range of Z490 and H470 motherboards with the usual Taichi, Steel Legend and PRO titles we would expect from ASRock. However, there was one new addition to the Creator range, this looks like it will not be Z490 chipset based but rather the W480 which is expected to be the new chipset that powers workstation systems for Intel’s next-generation Comet Lake-S mainstream desktop processors.

Just a few days ago, the potential specification of Intel’s 10th generation Core series desktop processors were leaked online and now an alleged internal Intel document appears to show the performance of the upcoming flagship ten-core Intel Core i9-10900K CPU.

The alleged internal Intel slide was originally leaked online by ITHome and then shared by Tom’s Hardware. The image shows the potential performance of the upcoming 10-core, 20-thread Comet Lake-S flagship Core i9-10900K processor compared against the current 9th generation Intel Core i9-9900K CPU.

The slide claims that performance comparisons were measured in the same chassis and both processors are said to be tested with all security patches available as of 4th November 2019. Performance comparisons of the two CPU’s include results from benchmarks such as Cinebench R15 and SYSmark 2014 SE, among others.

According to the benchmark results in the leaked slides, the Intel Core i9-10900k could offer anything from 2% to 30% performance increase over the Intel Core i9-9900k. In the Cinebench R15 benchmark the Core i9-10900K is up to 26% faster than the Core i9-9900k based on the results. When all benchmarks are considered, the Core i9-10900K could produce an average of 13% performance improvement over the current 9th generation Core i9-9900K processor.

Intel is due to hold a press conference at CES on Monday 6th January where we could learn more about the upcoming 10th generation Core desktop processors. Intel will be live streaming the event from CES, so if you are interested in what 10th generation Intel desktop processors have to offer, it might be worth checking out.

KitGuru says: Since the 10th generation Intel Core processors will be fabbed on the current 14nm process, it is likely this Core i9-10900k performance improvement will come from the extra cores and higher frequency rather than any major IPC gains. What do you guys think to this information about the upcoming Intel Core i9-10900k performance? will any of you guys be upgrading to 10th Gen CPUs when they become available?

For quite some time now, Intel has had a stranglehold on the desktop CPU market, especially when it comes to gaming. A recent resurgence from AMD has seen a large chunk of that market being taken away, with AMD Ryzen offering performance benefits for productivity, streamers and content creators.

Due to this AMD Ryzen resurgence, Intel has been forced to come up with ideas to fight back at AMD Ryzen and regain some of that market share. A recent Twitter post by TUM_APISAK leaked out information that Intel will be treating the new 10th generation Core i3 line of CPUs with Hyper-Threading, which will provide 4-cores and 8-threads, something that was traditionally only available on Intel’s top of the range Core i7 CPUs.

Following the reports of Core i3 receiving Hyper-Threading in the 10th generation line up, it now seems we should expect the same from 10th generation Core i5, after evidence found again on the SiSoftware database may have confirmed this rumour. However, while the database listing did not specify Core i5, the new entry does show an Intel CPU with 6-cores and 12-threads.

It's no secret that Intel has launched 6-core 12-thread processors previously in the Core i7-8700K and Core i7-8086K, along with some new CPUs from the mobile Comet Lake family. The main point of interest in the recent SiSoftware database entry is that the CPU in question was tested in a desktop platform, on an ECS H470-SF110 motherboard, with only a base clock of 2.0GHz mentioned.

Again, this could prove Intel is willing to launch their entry-level and mid-range CPUs with Hyper-Threading in their 10th generation line-up. If the Core i3 is to get 4-cores and 8-threads it only seems natural for a 10th generation Core i5 to have 6-cores and 12-threads, which means we could see the next generation of Core i7 CPUs, with 8-cores and 16-threads and possibly Core i9 being 10-core 20-thread processors.

Obviously, this is all just speculation, however, it would provide a decent looking 10th generation desktop line-up from Intel, especially if they can produce similar CPU clock frequencies to 9th generation. A 10-core, 20-thread CPU which could push 5.0Ghz on all cores would make for a pretty hefty boost in gaming I’m sure.

KitGuru says: With very little information from Intel regarding 10th generation desktop CPUs, this is all speculation. However, when you consider Intel still may have a slight advantage over AMD in gaming, Hyper-Threading across all 10th generation Core desktop CPUs would make sense if Intel want to retain the gaming CPU market.
