MSI is expanding its extensive portfolio of gaming monitors with the new Optix G27C5. This display was designed to deliver an immersive gaming experience thanks to its high refresh rate, screen curvature and borderless frame.

The curved (1500R) Samsung VA panel used for the Optix G27C5 comes with a Full HD resolution, 178°/178° viewing angles, 165Hz refresh rate, and a rated response time of 1ms MPRT. This monitor covers 90% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and 113% of the sRGB colour spectrum, while also boasting a contrast ratio of 3000:1, 250 nits of typical brightness and 16.7M colour depth.

This monitor support AMD FreeSync to avoid screen tearing and is equipped with Anti-Flicker technology and Blue Light Reduction to reduce eye fatigue.

Connectivity options include 1x DisplayPort 1.2 (outputting up to 165Hz), 2x HDMI 1.4 ports (outputting up to 144Hz), and 1x 3.5mm audio-out jack. The monitor's OSD is controlled through a 5-way joystick navigator on the back of the frame. Ergonomic adjustments are quite limited, as the screen is only capable of tilting from -5º to 20º, but it has support for 100×100 VESA mounting if you wish to install an aftermarket stand.

Razer Raptor 27 144Hz Gaming Monitor Review https://www.kitguru.net/peripherals/james-morris/razer-raptor-27-27in-165hz-gaming-monitor-review/ https://www.kitguru.net/peripherals/james-morris/razer-raptor-27-27in-165hz-gaming-monitor-review/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 13:57:29 +0000 https://www.kitguru.net/?p=459220 This high-end 27in gaming display has the Razer hallmark - design ethos streaming out of its pixels.

Razer certainly knows a thing or two about style. The company's gorgeous gaming laptops have been enticing players for some years now, and Razer has been branching out into other areas of late, including routers. This may have seemed like a bit of a leap for a company not previously in the networking business, but the Razer Raptor 27 not so much. Laptops have integrated screens after all. This high-end 27in gaming display has the Razer hallmark – design ethos streaming out of its pixels.

As the Porsche-AOC collaboration has shown to its detriment, however, you need a solid monitor specification to back up all that style. Whereas the latter merely looked great, with rather pedestrian features underneath, the Raptor 27 sports a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, 144Hz refresh, and FreeSync 2 with G-sync Compatible accreditation. So this is a serious piece of gaming hardware.

The panel technology used is IPS, which isn't the best for pixel response but is top of the heap for visual quality. The grey-to-grey response is the usual 4ms for this technology, although Razer reduces this to 1ms with Motion Blur Reduction. The maximum brightness is rated at 420cd/m2, just enough for DisplayHDR400 certification, and contrast is the usual 1000:1 of IPS. Razer claims 95 per cent of the DCI-P3 gamut, which will be great for HDR gaming and movie watching.

So the Raptor 27 is much more than a pretty face, but the design is still the main focus. The solid stand doesn't allow swivel, but you can raise the panel up and down as well as tilt it. You can also tilt it all the way back so the screen points up, making cable attachment very easy. You get all the main connectivity options here, with DisplayPort, HDMI and USB-C, although only one of each. The latter is accompanied by a pair of USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, and there's a minijack for plugging in your headphones.

With unique flat cabling in the luminescent green that is part of Razer's brand image, this is an eye-catching device, although it also comes at an eye-catching price. Considering that Gigabyte's AORUS FI27Q-P available for £240 less with HBR3 and 165Hz, is the Raptor 27 making you pay too much for style over substance? Let's find out.

Asus recently unveiled a new line of very impressive sounding ROG Swift gaming monitors and soon, you will be able to pick one up, as Overclockers UK has first dibs on pre-orders. Right now, three new monitors are up on the store, one being the Asus PG279Q, a 2560×1440 IPS panel running at 165Hz with G-Sync technology. There is also a 27-inch 4K G-sync 60Hz monitor on the way and a 34-inch Ultra-Wide, with G-Sync and a 100Hz refresh rate.

asus_rog_swift_pg279q

Stock isn't expected until November and it will be pretty limited. However, you can still pre-order each monitor. The Asus PG279Q will set you back £749.99, you will also need a GTX 900 series GPU in order to get the maximum 165Hz refresh rate so keep that in mind.

asus_rog_swift_PG27AQ

Next up on the list is the Asus ROG Swift PG278Q, the official answer to Acer's own 4K G-Sync TN monitor. The Asus 27-inch 4K G-Sync monitor comes with an IPS display for better colour accuracy and a 60Hz refresh rate for those who value higher resolution over refresh rate. This one is available to pre-order for £799.99.

Finally, we have the new Asus ROG Swift PG348Q, a massive 34-inch ultra-wide offering with a curved display. It comes with an IPS panel, a 3440×1440 resolution, a 100Hz refresh rate and finally, Nvidia's G-Sync variable refresh rate technology. Obviously a monitor of this calibre doesn't come cheap, those wanting the ultimate ultra-wide gaming experience can pre-order this model for £1199.99.

While the Asus PG279Q and the PG278Q are expected to arrive in November ahead of Christmas, the ultra-wide monitor unfortunately can't be guaranteed in time for Christmas and may not ship until January, so keep that in mind.

KitGuru Says: The new line of Asus monitors certainly looks impressive. I imagine many will be after that 165Hz 1440p display in particular. What do you think of the new line up from Asus? Thinking about picking one of these up?

Asustek Computer this week demonstrated the industry’s first monitor with 165Hz refresh rate designed for gaming. The display is currently a technology showcase prototype, which will hit the market at a later date. But while not a lot is clear about the monitor, it is evident that this is a unique product.

At the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA Berlin) trade-show, Asustek demonstrated its ROG Swift PG279Q display, which features Nvidia Corp.’s G-Sync dynamic refresh rate technology along with up to 165Hz panel refresh rate. The monitor was designed with professional gamers in mind, who require maximum framerate per second.

asus_rog_swift_pg279q

Asustek did not disclose any details about its new ROG Swift PG279Q display, but sources close to the company revealed some interesting facts about the product. The Asus ROG Swift PG279Q is based on an advanced in-plane switching (IPS) panel with a very low response time. If the panel in the ROG Swift PG279Q is similar to that of its predecessor (which is highly likely), then expect it to feature at least 2560*1440 resolution, 170°/160° horizontal/vertical viewing angles, 350cd/m² brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio and 16.7 million (8-bit) colours. The monitor will use DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI interfaces.

Typically, monitors with 120Hz – 144Hz higher refresh rates use TN panels and thus do not feature great colour reproduction and good viewing angles. In fact, the vast majority of displays that support AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync also rely on TN panels to provide adaptive refresh rate across a broad range of frequencies. However, Asustek’s latest-generation ROG Swift PG-series displays rely on high-quality IPS panels with great colours and wide viewing angles.

asus_rog_display_swift

Keeping in mind that Asustek Computer does not produce panels for displays itself, but buys them from other makers, it is unknown whether 165Hz is the native refresh rate of the particular panel, or Asus had to use a proprietary technology to enable such high frequency. It is also unknown whether 165Hz rate is actually supported at all times and by Nvidia’s G-Sync technology.

Pricing of the upcoming Asus ROG Swift PG279Q is unknown, but since it will be a premium display, it will not be affordable. Asus did not disclose availability dates for the product.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The new display is not really big and its resolution is not really high. However, if you are a professional gamer who needs the highest framerate, then Asustek’s ROG Swift PG279Q is just what the doctor ordered. Moreover, if you need an ultra-high refresh rate and a good-quality IPS panel, the ROG Swift PG279Q simply has no rivals.
