Seagate Technology late last week revealed plans to introduce a 2.5” hard disk drive with over 2TB capacity. The company did not reveal any additional technical details about the product, but said that it would be released in the next couple of quarters.

“Our 2TB 2.5-inch [hard disk] drive still leads the industry in areal density and will be refreshed in the next two quarters to a higher capacity, maintaining our leadership,” said Dave Mosley, president of operations and technology at Seagate, during the company’s conference call with investors and financial analysts. “We look forward to pushing these areal density improvements into the majority of our products in fiscal year 2016.”

Earlier this year Showa Denko K.K., an independent producer of platters for hard disk drives, announced its first eighth-generation perpendicular magnetic recording platters for HDDs. The eighth-gen media has unprecedented areal density and is designed for 2.5” hard drives. Capacity of the new platter is 750GB, which allows to build dual-platter HDDs with 1.5TB capacity as well as triple-platter hard drives with 2.25TB capacity.

Showa Denko also intends to accelerate its development of next generation 2.5” HD media with storage capacity of 1TB. It is unclear when exactly such platters emerge on the market, but Seagate could use them to build dual-platter 2TB HDDs as well as triple-platter 3TB HDDs for notebooks.

KitGuru Says: It will be very interesting to see what exactly Seagate plans to launch. 2.25TB capacity does not look like a breakthrough, but 3TB HDD that actually fits into laptops seems to be a very interesting product.

Toshiba Corp. has introduced the world’s highest-capacity 2.5” hard disk drive. The offering can hold 3TB of data and sets up a record, however, the drive may not be suitable for mainstream laptops.

The Toshiba MQ03ABB300 hard disk drive with 3TB capacity is based on four perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) 750GB platters. Since the hard drive employs so many platters, it is 15mm thick, which means that it will not fit into the vast majority of laptops. According to Toshiba, the hard drive is designed for “personal external storage and space-constrained needs”.

The MQ03ABB300 hard disk drive features 5400rpm spindle speed, 16MB cache, Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface as well as 512e advanced formats. Toshiba declares 5.56ms average latency time. The drive typically consumes 1.7W and 0.7W in idle mode, which means that it is very power efficient for its capacity.

The new hard drive for Toshiba is suitable for single and multi-drive HDD home and SMB storage enclosures by providing ample space for data storage. The power efficient design also makes it a suitable solution for USB connected external personal storage applications.

Sample shipments of the Toshiba MQ03ABB300 will begin in May. Pricing is unknown.

KitGuru Says: Western Digital also has technology to integrate four platters into a 2.5” hard drive. Therefore, expect WD to introduce a similar 3TB 2.5” HDD in the foreseeable future.

Today we are looking at an enclosure by ICY Dock, the Blizzard (MB080U3S-1SB), a creatively designed single 3.5″ bay featuring both USB 3.0 and eSATA connectivity.

ICY Dock have built this new enclosure from the ground-up to have an elegant appearance but yet incorporate a large 80mm cooling fan. The advantages of this design? With the fan positioned at the front and the vents at the rear it can create a tunnel of fast moving air … much like a turbine engine, allowing all sides of the hard drive to be cooled very efficiently.

ICY Dock have also managed to create an enclosure which can house a 3.5″ drive securely without the use of any tools – great if you want to switch drives at any point.
