When it comes to high-end memory modules for enthusiasts, there is always a trade-off between their clock-rates and capacities. It is not easy to overclock DIMMs powered by multiple memory ICs [integrated circuits], which is why it is complicated to install a lot of fast memory. However, G.Skill on Thursday introduced its latest 128GB DDR4 memory kit that weds performance and capacity.

The new G.Skill Ripjaws 4 128GB DDR4 memory kit consists of eight 16GB 288-pin modules based on Samsung’s 8Gb DDR4 chips made using 20nm process technology. Each module can operate at up to 2800MHz with CL16 16-16-36 timings at 1.35V voltage. The memory sticks feature black Ripjaws 4 aluminium heat spreaders. G.Skill will offer different versions of enthusiast-class 128GB DDR4 kits with clock-speeds from 2133MHz to 2800MHz.

The high-performance 128GB DDR4 kits are designed for Intel X99 platform and Core i7 5800/5900-series “Haswell-E” microprocessors. When installed, they provide memory bandwidth of up to whopping 89.6GB/s. The modules fully support Intel’s XMP 2.0 technology and can set their clock-rates – which exceed standard JEDEC-approved DDR4 frequencies – automatically. The 128GB DDR4 kits have been validated on Asus ROG X99 Rampage V mainboard.

G.Skill’s new 16GB DDR4 memory modules provide server-class capacities as well as extreme desktop-class performance. Such modules will be a great choice for people seeking for maximum memory capacity (e.g., video editors, designers, etc.) who also want to play video games comfortably with maximum framerates.

“During development of these DDR4 16GB modules, we see amazing future potential for 128GB (16GBx8) memory kits in extreme high capacity operation on upcoming platforms,” said Tequila Huang, vice president of research and development at G.Skill. “We will be witnessing the beginning of a new set of standards for extreme capacity and performance DDR4 memory kits on both current and future computing platforms. Needless to say, we are very excited for this release.”

The latest G.Skill Ripjaws 4 128GB DDR4 memory kits are covered with a limited lifetime warranty. G.Skill has not announced pricing of its new modules and kits, but since we are talking about unique products that have no rivals, the price could easily exceed £1000/$1400/€1400. In fact, at present Newegg sells a quad-channel (4*32GB) DDR4 kit from Crucial for $2249.

KitGuru Says: 128GB of DDR4 memory is a complete overkill for any high-end desktop today. At the same time, not a lot of server or workstation owners would like to use factory-overclocked modules not certified by makers of their systems. It would be interesting to see how popular will 128GB DDR4 memory kits get outside of the world of boutique PC makers, who manage to sell absolutely incredible configurations at unbelievable price-points…
