We are deep in the era of SSDs, but in scenarios where storage space is more important than performance, HDDs still make sense. With that in mind, we still see companies like Seagate pushing the boundaries of mass HDD storage. The company's latest launch includes two 20TB hard drives, one belonging to the Exos series and one for the IronWolf range.

Aimed at providing customers with “maximum storage capacity and the highest rack-space efficiency”, the 20TB Exos X20 is a perfect storage solution for data centres. Providing a data rate of up to 285 MB/s and a latency of 4.16ms, this HDD is up to 3x better than solutions that only use read or write caching.

As a data centre-oriented solution, the Exos X20 is incredibly reliable, offering a rated MTBF of 2.5M hours. You can find Seagate's new Exos HDD is the recently announced Exos Corvault storage system, a 4U chassis with 106x Exos drives, resulting in 2.12PB of storage.

Besides the Exos X20 20TB, Seagate also announced the IronWolf Pro 20TB with NAS-optimised AgileArray technology, a set of hardware, firmware, and software features to enhance performance and reliability. Aimed at small and medium businesses, Seagate's new IronWolf drive has built-in rotational vibration sensors to ensure drive performance without causing much lag or downtime.

With a workload rate limit of 300TB/year, the new IronWolf Pro 20TB was designed to endure heavy workloads while still providing transfer rates of 285MB/s. This drive is compatible with IronWolf Health management to access and monitor drive health and is backed by a 5-year warranty and three years of Rescue Data recovery services.

The Seagate Exos X20 20TB is coming out at £669.00, and the IronWolf Pro 20TB is available for £559.90.

KitGuru says: Most of us normal consumers don't need 20TB of storage, but these drives make a lot of sense for datacentre and enterprise. What would you do with 20TB of storage space?

On its last earnings call, Seagate showed its high-capacity HDD roadmap. On it, there are the company's hard drive plans for the foreseeable future, showing 18TB and 20TB hard drives to be released in 2020, and up to 50TB hard drives by 2026.

After the recently released Exos X16 16TB HDD (review here), Seagate plans to release 18TB and 20TB hard drives next year. The first HDDs coming are the 18TB using CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording), the same as the Exos X16, in the first half of 2020. On the other hand, the 20TB HDD will be coming in the second half of the same year, but unlike the previously mentioned HDDs, it will be using HAMR (Heat-assisted magnetic recording).

From then on, the HAMR-based HDD's capacity is planned to reach 30+TB by 2023-2024, and 50+TB by 2026. During the same period, CMR-based and SMR-based (shingled magnetic recording) HDDs will continue to be shipped, but with no significant increase in capacity.

According to this roadmap, it seems that Seagate will dominate the HDD market in the first half of 2020. Western Digital will ship its HAMR+PMR-based HDDs with 18TB and HAMR+SMR-based 20TB HDDs only in the second half of the next year, while Toshiba hasn't even specified a date for its products to be released, besides that it will ship to selected customers until the end of 2019.

KitGuru says: In a time where most manufacturers and customers see SSDs as the new standard, there's still space for the HDD market to evolve. Low-cost storage it's still useful in various case-scenarios such as cloud, servers, and occasionally accessed data. Do you still use HDDs anywhere? Do you need a 50+TB drive?

Storage needs have drastically increased over the last ten years as more people switch to digital content and file sizes increase. As a result, larger hard drives are needed, whether it be for work-related projects, personal use or a mix of the two. With that in mind, Western Digital has announced today that it is launching a new 20TB version of its My Book Duo storage system, the highest capacity it has made.

The new 20TB My Book Duo comes ready for RAID use and packs two USB 3.0 ports. To help protect your files and keep everything secure, 256-bit AES hardware encryption can be used and of course, you will have plenty of storage for pretty much everything.

The My Book Duo isn’t exactly a small external drive, it is quite tall and bulky, so you will need to keep it sitting on your desk. Still, if you need to take it somewhere, it is still small enough to fit into a bag alongside a laptop.

Given that this is a 20TB drive, performance will depend on a couple of factors. If you are running the My Book Duo in RAID-0 mode over a USB Type-C cable, you will get sequential read speeds of up to 360MB/s. There is also a RAID-1 mode that will mirror data on the two WD-Red drives inside. This gives you redundancy, so if one drive fails or corrupts, then you will still have that data backed up and ready to go on the second drive. The only downside to this is you would only be able to use half the available HDD space. If one or both drives die, there is a three year warranty in place should any problems arise.

Given the amount of storage this thing offers, it isn’t cheap by any stretch. In fact, the regular price for the 20TB My Book Duo is $849.99. There are other versions though, including 16TB for $629.99, 12TB for $439.99, 8TB for $349.99, 6TB for $299.99 and finally, 4TB for $279.99.

KitGuru Says: Lately I have found myself getting pretty close to filling up my 4TB storage drive, so I’ve been looking in to getting something a bit bigger. How much storage space do you currently have available to you?

How will the world change as motherboard vendors move from 1Gb Ethernet ports to 2.5Gb or even 5Gb as standard? Can the major hard drive manufacturers stay ahead of the SSD curve simply by launching 20TB units for the 3.5″ form factor? Will Apple's imminent launch of a Thunderbolt 3 device shake up the market? These and many other topics came up during KitGuru's exclusive interview with Drobo's CEO Mihir Shah and CTO Rod Harrison. Fascinating stuff.

Now in its 11th year of business, Drobo originated in San Jose, California and prides itself on simplicity. We recently reviewed the Drobo 5N and it proved itself to be a capable unit – especially with the flexibility offered through the company's BeyondRAID technology, which allows you to bunch a variety of drives together into a single storage solution. Both Rod and Mihir were very open and expansive with their responses and we'd certainly encourage you to watch it through – as there are plenty of interesting insights and revelations.

KitGuru says: The next few years will see a fundamental evolution in storage technology – as the transfer speeds between drives, systems and even wireless networks all shoot up. While the rate of increase in central processor power seems to have slowed, storage is set to change in many ways and, as far as we are concerned, the faster the better. Check back soon to enter a competition that we will be running with Drobo for a brand new yet-to-be-released storage device.
