Last week, AMD officially lifted the lid on Ryzen 2nd Gen, revealing key specs, pricing and some of the technical improvements made under the hood. It will be a few days before reviews hit, but it looks like at least one overclocker has already managed to push Zen+ to its limits, achieving a 5.88GHz overclock on the upcoming Ryzen 7 2700X.

Over on the CPU-Z validation website, two recent overclock results from ‘TSAIK' popped up. One for the Ryzen 7 2700X, which was pushed all the way up to 5884.24MHz and one for the Ryzen 5 2600X, which ended up hitting 5882.97MHz. In both cases, all cores were enabled, in addition to SMT.

In order to push these CPUs so high, liquid nitrogen was used for cooling. The 2700X also had its voltage core set to a whopping 1.76V, while the 2600X needed a little bit extra, with a 1.768V core voltage.

For testing, MSI motherboards were used, with the X470 Gaming M7 AC being employed for the Ryzen 7 2700X overclock and the X470 Gaming Plus being used for the Ryzen 5 2600X.

Given the use of LN2, it seems unlikely that real world buyers will achieve overclocks this high, but it's always interesting to see how far new chips can be pushed. The case for Ryzen 2nd Gen is particularly interesting, as AMD has switched over to the 12nm process.

KitGuru Says: Ryzen 2nd Gen is just around the corner. Are any of you thinking of upgrading this year? Have you pre-ordered already, or are you holding out for reviews first?
