Update: This competition is now CLOSED. Thanks to everyone who entered, today's winner is James Howe!

If you missed out this time around, then keep an eye out as we have one or two more surprises lined up to end the year on. Today's giveaway is live and features an RTX 2070 graphics card, you can find the details on that, HERE.

We are coming towards the end of the KitGuru Advent Calendar, but we've still got a couple of big giveaways planned to close things out. For day 24, we have teamed up with AMD to give away a Ryzen 7 2700X processor!

AMD has been on top form when it comes to CPUs in the last couple of years. We reviewed the Ryzen 7 2700X back in April, praising it for its jump to the 12nm process, 4GHz boost clock speed and improved memory compatibility over 1st Gen Ryzen. This eight-core, 16 thread beast will be a worthy upgrade for your gaming PC.

Entering this giveaway is simple, all you need to do is head over to THIS POST on our Facebook page and leave a comment. We plan to have a new discussion topic each day, today we are asking you guys to tell us what CPU you are currently using!

A winner will be picked randomly tomorrow as we roll on to the next competition, so get your entries in fast! Also, be sure to send a thank you over to AMD over on Facebook or Twitter, the prizes are coming directly from them, so this would not have been possible without their support!

KitGuru Says: Thanks to all of the readers for supporting us throughout 2018, and to AMD for taking part in our Advent Calendar competition run! We'll be back to announce the winner tomorrow and launch the next giveaway.

Last week, AMD officially lifted the lid on Ryzen 2nd Gen, revealing key specs, pricing and some of the technical improvements made under the hood. It will be a few days before reviews hit, but it looks like at least one overclocker has already managed to push Zen+ to its limits, achieving a 5.88GHz overclock on the upcoming Ryzen 7 2700X.

Over on the CPU-Z validation website, two recent overclock results from ‘TSAIK' popped up. One for the Ryzen 7 2700X, which was pushed all the way up to 5884.24MHz and one for the Ryzen 5 2600X, which ended up hitting 5882.97MHz. In both cases, all cores were enabled, in addition to SMT.

In order to push these CPUs so high, liquid nitrogen was used for cooling. The 2700X also had its voltage core set to a whopping 1.76V, while the 2600X needed a little bit extra, with a 1.768V core voltage.

For testing, MSI motherboards were used, with the X470 Gaming M7 AC being employed for the Ryzen 7 2700X overclock and the X470 Gaming Plus being used for the Ryzen 5 2600X.

Given the use of LN2, it seems unlikely that real world buyers will achieve overclocks this high, but it's always interesting to see how far new chips can be pushed. The case for Ryzen 2nd Gen is particularly interesting, as AMD has switched over to the 12nm process.

KitGuru Says: Ryzen 2nd Gen is just around the corner. Are any of you thinking of upgrading this year? Have you pre-ordered already, or are you holding out for reviews first?

We've known for a couple of months now that AMD plans to roll out its Ryzen 2000 series CPUs in April. Last week, the first Ryzen 7 2700X leaks gave us a good idea of what to expect in terms of improvements and today, AMD's initial lineup of Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 2000 series processors has leaked online, alongside launch prices for each chip.

Ryzen 2000 series CPUs will be based on the refined Zen+ architecture and built on the 12nm process. This gives these processors more wiggle room for higher clock speeds and improved performance. The official launch is supposed to take place in April, but today the Spanish site ‘El Chapuzas Informatico‘ leaked a bunch of presentation slides, giving us the details early.

This time around, it looks like the top-end Ryzen 7 CPU will be the 2700X, with no mention of a 2800X to be found on the slides. The Ryzen 7 2700X will feature 8 cores and 16 Threads, while bumping up clock speeds to 3.7GHz base and 4.35Ghz boost. This particular CPU is supposed to launch with a $369 price tag, putting it in direct competition with Intel's Core i7-8700K.

Here are the specs/prices for the other CPUs on AMD's list:

CPU Cores/Threads Base/Boost speeds (GHz) TDP Price
Ryzen 7 2700X 8C/16T 3.7/4.35 105W $369
Ryzen 7 2700 8C/16T 3.2/4.1 65W $299
Ryzen 5 2600X 6C/12T 3.6/4.2 95W $249
Ryzen 5 2600 6C/12T 3.6/3.9 65W $199

According to the leaked slides, there will be a 7.7 percent FPS gap (in favour of Intel) on average between the Ryzen 7 2700X and the Core i7-8700K while gaming at 1080p and ultra settings. Interestingly, all game testing was done with a GTX 1080, rather than one of AMD's Radeon GPUs.

Compared to last year's Ryzen 7 1800X, AMD is expecting a 5 percent boost to frame rate on average when switching to the Ryzen 7 2700X. Once again, game testing was conducted at 1080p, ultra settings with a GTX 1080.

These new CPUs will be compatible with 300-series motherboards, but we will be seeing a new 400-series chipset launch too. So if you have a Ryzen-based system already, you'll be able to pick up a new CPU and drop it straight in. If you are building a new system, then you'll have a choice between a slightly older X370, B350 or A320 motherboard and newer X470, B450 and A420 options.

The second generation of Ryzen processors will also support updated features. This includes an updated version of Extended Frequency Range (XFR) and Precision Boost 2, which enable higher clock speeds based on cooling.

KitGuru Says: I am intrigued by the lack of Ryzen 2800X, perhaps that is something that will be coming later on. Either way though, for now, this is the Ryzen 2000 series lineup we are expecting in April. Are many of you waiting to upgrade? Will you be holding out for these to launch?
