Due to a whole host of factors, when the PlayStation 5 was first released in late 2020, it suffered from a great deal of stock shortages – putting a heavy hamper on the system’s sales. Finally, in January Sony claimed that 2023 would be the year when the PS5 no longer suffers from stock issues. It seems this is indeed the case, as February’s sales have shown Sony’s console up by over 300% year-on-year.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, 2023 looks set to be a huge year for Sony as the PlayStation 5 has been selling like hotcakes ever since the console saw its stock shortages reduced. January saw the system increase its sales by 202% compared to January of last year. February has seen the console reach even higher highs as in the UK the PS5 saw a huge increase in sales of 316% compared to this time last year.

January was not a great month for Xbox, however this is improving somewhat with February’s console sales being up 15% compared to February 2022. The Nintendo Switch meanwhile did not see such growth, with the console sales dropping by 29% compared to this time last year. Of course, the Nintendo Switch is nearing its end-of-life and so this slowdown does make sense.

When Sony said that more PS5s would be available this year, it seems as though they really meant it. With two straight months of huge growth, it will be highly interesting to see how many units are sold by the end of the year.

If you have an MSI motherboard released in the last few years and have Secure Boot enabled, depending on the firmware version you're using, the feature might not work as you would hope. According to recent findings, almost300 MSI motherboards have a lousy Implementation of the component in select UEFI firmware versions.

Based on Dawid Potocki's investigation (via The Register), many MSI motherboards with specific firmware versions are not working as intended with Secure Boot enabled. When turning on Secure Boot, the default option for the “Image Execution Policy” setting for removable and fixed media should be “Deny Execute”. Instead, the default selection is “Always Execute”, making the Secure Boot feature useless.

To clarify what Secure Boot actually is, it's a security standard created by members of the PC industry to ensure that a device boots using only software trusted by the OEM. When the computer boots, the firmware verifies the signature of all boot software, including UEFI firmware drivers, EFI programs, and the operating system. If the signatures are genuine, the computer boots, and the firmware gives away the control of the system to the OS. With the “Always Execute” option enabled for various media types, the firmware allows the OS to boot without verifying its signature.

The issue seems to affect most motherboards released in the last six years, but only select firmware versions are affected by it. The researcher noted that most are beta BIOS releases. Still, considering they're available to the public, we'd have hoped MSI would offer a warning to its customers. That's, of course, assuming the firmware is released like this with MSI's knowledge. MSI hasn't yet commented on these findings. However, Potocki suspects the company did this intentionally “because they probably knew that Microsoft wouldn't approve of it and/or that they get less tickets about Secure Boot causing issues for their users”.

Sennheiser has sent us through a few different headsets as of late, each as impressive as the last. They are expensive though. For those who do not fancy spending several hundred pounds on a headset, but still want that Sennheiser quality, the GSP 300 might be what you are after.

This headset features a similar frame and design as the PC 373D, comfortable padding and a built in volume control, all with a much lower price tag. The paintjob is accented with blue too, making this one of the more eye-catching Sennheiser headsets we have looked at recently.

Although the GSP 300 is only stereo and does not come with some of the more advanced features like lighting, in-line remote control and virtual surround sound, Sennheiser is known for its audio quality, so this set of cans should be no different.

Today we are going to take a look at the Buffalo AirStation N600 wireless router which is positioned as an affordable dual-band wireless router.  This means it operates on both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequencies … ideal for those who want to connect multiple devices which consume a lot of bandwidth without running into issues.

Buffalo are well known for producing a wide range of networking equipment and they offer more affordable alternatives to competitors such as Synology.  We have reviewed a number of Buffalo products in the past and have been pretty impressed with what they have to offer.

The AirStation N600 operates on the ‘N' wireless band and is able to funnel 300 Mbps through both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequencies respectively.  This should make it well suited to those who are heavy online gamers or those who stream a lot of bandwidth-heavy content over the wireless network as the traffic can be split between the bands, providing you have compatible devices.

Qualcomm have released their first quad core Snapdragon based tablet with a whopping price tag of $1,300. Not exactly targeting the mainstream market.

CNET Asia posted a picture of the new tablet, saying that the new tablet was firmly targeting the developer audience. The machine boosts a 10.1 inch WXGA screen running at 1366×720, with 2GB of system memory and a 13 megapixel rear facing camera.

The new tablet hosts the latest APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 quad core chip, which has been getting the industry excited.

The new S4 quad core chip is said to make an appearance in the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity tablet. Anandtech have some performance figures for the new processor, over here.

Kitguru says: $1,300 will be a tough sell, even with the cutting edge processor on board.

At Computex 2012, Thermaltake will unveil a new iteration of the level 10 chassis, which it is calling the Level 10 Silver Limited Edition Gaming Chassis. Original. What does this launch mean and how many will be swayed to put their hands in their pockets? KitGuru hits the Taipei streets to find out.

Here's a tough question. If a company revisits an old design, then are they paying homage or saying ‘Nope, no new ideas'?

If you look at the Mini car, which the Brits decided to stop making in favour of the butt-ugly Mini Metro – then BMW's decision to bring back the initial design was hailed as a great move.

The same can be said for ‘Original Coke' and the BMW ‘Z' series.

With Thermaltake, we're not sure.

When the company first launched the Level 10 at around £550, there was a big worry with Thermaltake's senior management about whether the project would make money. They decided that if they could sell more than 1,000 units – it was ‘OK' – but 3,000 was the magic number.

Eventually, they managed to sell WAY more than 3,000 and the whole project was a great success – inspiring products like the new car-style mice etc.

For Computex 2012, Thermaltake's CEO Kenny Lin will announce that a limited edition run of 300 units will be made in silver [colour – not the precious metal! – Ed] for sale across the globe. Each one will be individually badged, so you know which of the 300 you have. Which is a nice touch.

Overall, we can't help thinking that Thermaltake's DesignWorks team needs to step back and create another classic design. One where price is no object, that focuses on creating excitement in the PC industry. Like a top fashion house announcing its latest collection. In short, Thermaltake needs to put ‘something very new and different' on the runway if it is to be considered a true innovator.

KitGuru says: If we were in charge of Thermaltake's DesignWorks team, then we would look to partner with Lotus, Porsche or Maserati for the next generation of chassis. Forget the cost. Build the dream.

There has never been such a wide selection of solid state drives available on the market before from so many different manufacturers. This can make it confusing for some consumers, when it comes to deciding on a purchase. KitGuru spend a lot of time looking at the latest performance SSDs like the Patriot Wildfire and OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS, but many people are willing to compromise a little on performance, to save some cash.

Today we are going to look at the 320 Series 300 GB solid state drive from Intel which is aimed at users who need a reliable drive with plenty of capacity … it has been out for a while now, but it still a big seller for the processor giant.

While it doesn't quite boast the same performance figures as the latest Sandforce drives, the claimed read and write speeds of 270 MB/s and 205 MB/s should satisfy the performance demands for a wide audience.

Specification

  • Capacity: 300GB
  • Connectivity: 1 x SATA-II
  • Edition: 320 Series
  • Form Factor: 2.5″
  • Manufacturer: Intel
  • Memory Type: MLC-Flash
  • Package Type: OEM
  • Power Consumption (active): 150mW
  • Random Write 4K: 23000 IOPS
