Nvidia Corp. on Thursday reported its financial results for the third quarter of its fiscal 2015, which ended on the 26th of October, 2014. The company earned record revenue in a single quarter thanks to increased sales of all of its products, including all types of graphics processing units as well as Tegra system-on-chips.

Nvidia’s revenue for the Q3 FY2015 totaled $1.225 billion, up 16 per cent from $1.05 billion a year earlier and up 11 per cent from $1.10 billion the previous quarter. Nvidia’s net income for the quarter was $173 million, operating expenses were around $463 million, whereas gross margin was 55.2 per cent. Revenue for the first three quarters of fiscal 2015 was a record $3.43 billion, up 15 per cent from $2.99 billion a year earlier.

Sales of Nvidia GPUs in Q3 2015 were up 11 per cent sequentially and 13 per cent year-over-year. According to Colette Kress, chief financial officer of Nvidia, The GPU business grew due to the launch of the new GeForce GTX 900-series “Maxwell” products and the seasonal increase in demand for consumer PCs. In addition, Nvidia’s datacenter platform revenue increased as a result of continued strength in GPU acceleration opportunities. The company claims that during the quarter it signed “large” contracts with cloud service providers and government customers.

Sales of Nvidia Tegra application processors for mobile, consumer and automotive applications were up 6 per cent quarter-over-quarter as well as 51 per cent year-over-year. Ms. Kress claims that Tegra sales were led by automobile infotainment systems, mobile devices, embedded systems, and the onset of Shield tablet sales. Automobile infotainment system revenue nearly doubled year over year.

“Nvidia’s focus on creating visual computing platforms for datacenter, mobile and PC drove record revenue this quarter,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of Nvidia. “Growth drivers have kicked in for us on several fronts. High-performance computing, virtualization and web service providers have created demand for our GPU-accelerated datacenter platforms. Automakers are using Tegra to help reinvent the driving experience. And our new Maxwell architecture is a giant leap forward that has triggered a major upgrade cycle by PC gamers.”

For the Q4 FY2015 the company expects revenue of around $1.2 billion, operating expenses of approximately $470 million and gross margin of about 55.2 per cent.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately, Nvidia does not provide a detailed revenue split and it is unclear how significantly the launch of the GeForce GTX 970/980 and the GeForce GTX 970M/980M affected the company’s sales. Keeping in mind that there were no major announcements regarding Tesla or Quadro products (even though Nvidia mentions certain design wins now), it looks like gaming GPUs based on the Maxwell architecture indeed drove Nvidia’s revenue to the record levels

Acer Group has announced the world’s first Chromebook – a notebook running Google’s Chrome OS – powered by Nvidia Corp.’s Tegra K1 system-on-chip. The laptop offers everything that the Chrome OS has to offer in addition to a high-performance application processor from Nvidia and up to 13 hours of battery life.

The Acer Chromebook 13 is based on quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 SoCs with ARM Cortex-A15 general-purpose cores and Kepler-based GeForce graphics processor with 192 stream processors. The systems come with 13.3” anti-glare displays, LPDDR3 RAM, solid-state storage, 802.11ac Wi-Fi with 2*2 MIMO antenna, USB 3.0, 720p webcam, stereo speakers, a microphone and so on.

The new Chromebooks from Acer will exist in three versions:

  • The Acer Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T9B0 – 1920*1080 full HD display, 2GB of memory and a 16GB NAND flash storage. It carries $299.99 price-tag in the U.S. (€223, £177 without taxes);
  • The Acer Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T1UU – 1920*1080 full HD display, 4GB of memory and a 32GB NAND flash storage. It is priced at $379.99 in the U.S. (€283, £225 without taxes);
  • The Acer Chromebook 13 CB5-311-T7NN – 1366*768 full HD display, 2GB of memory and a 16GB NAND flash storage. The recommended price is $279.99 (€208, £165 without taxes) in the U.S.

The design of Acer Chromebook 13 resembles that of Apple’s MacBook Air, whereas the weight does not exceed 1.5 kilograms. Acer claims that its Chromebooks have battery life between 11 and 13 hours.

The main problem of Chromebooks is that they require Internet connection to offer users advanced functionality. Since the quality of Internet connections varies, the majority of people just play it safe and get familiar Windows-based laptops. Still, the situation is gradually improving and there are programs for the Chrome OS that can work offline as well.

Gartner predicts that sales of Chromebooks will only reach 5.2 million units this year, hence, Acer will barely sell a lot of its Chromebook 13 devices. Nonetheless, it is remarkable that the company can provide basic computing functionality and premium visual quality using a mobile application processor.

The Acer Chromebook 13 starts shipping this month and will be available in European, North American and Asia Pacific markets.

KitGuru Says: While the prospects of Chromebooks are not truly good, it should be noted that prospects of low-cost PCs running SoCs akin to Nvidia’s Tegra K1 are pretty nice. Next-generation Windows 9 “Threshold” is expected to support both ARM and x86 microprocessors (since it will be designed for smartphones, tablets and PCs), which will automatically open the door for Tegra K1 to the market currently dominated by Intel Corp. and AMD. This is when Tegra may actually start to shine.

Nvidia Corp.’s Shield gaming device has not become popular after about a year on the market. Apparently, neither Google Android games with dedicated controls nor streamed PC titles could attract attention of core gamers. While it was expected that the company would introduce a new, sleeker, version of Shield this year, the company decided to take a more pragmatic approach and introduce a Shield-branded gaming tablet instead.

Nvidia recently certified a product called “Shield tablet” with the Global Certification Forum (GCF) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The tablet will come with integrated 3G/4G baseband capabilities, which is why it needs certification. Since the GCF is a U.K. organization, whereas the FCC is a U.S. commission, expect Nvidia’s Shield tablet to be available in both countries. In fact, it is likely that the slate will be available worldwide.

Nvidia has been testing what it was believed to be the successor of the Shield console for a while now. The new Shield-branded device, which was found in the AnTuTu databank earlier this year, was powered by the Tegra K1 system on-chip with four ARM Cortex-A15 cores (4-plus-1 architecture with one low-power core, clock-rate of the high-performance cores varies between 51MHz and 2524MHz) and Kepler architecture graphics processing unit with 192 stream processors, four ROPs [raster operating units] and so on. The product featured a display with rather odd 1440*810 resolution, 4GB of LPDDR3 memory, 16GB of NAND flash storage as well as Google Android 4.2.2 operating system. It is unknown whether the upcoming Shield tablet has the same specs as the device, which Nvidia tested earlier this year.

Nvidia needed its Shield game console mostly for strategic reasons, not in order to significantly increase its revenue. Nvidia needs Google Android to become a powerful gaming platform in general, which will eventually boost demand for the company’s Tegra application processors for smartphones and tablets. In a bid to attract both core gamers and game developers to Android, Nvidia created an ultimate gaming device, the Shield console. Unfortunately for Nvidia, gamers decided not to buy the gadget since most of Android games are tailored for touch-screens and motion-sensing, not dedicated buttons or D-pad. While hypothetically Nvidia could still release Shield 2 game console, it does not look like it has such plans.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

Google this week introduced a new tablet for software developers that belongs to its family of devices supporting the project Tango technologies. The mobile device has Nvidia Tegra K1 application processor inside as well as advanced sensing capabilities that help it to create a 3D model of the environment around it. The specs of the slate give a glimpse on requirements of the Tango technology.

The goal of Google’s project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion. While the side benefits of the project Tango are advancements in research of robotics and computer vision (something necessary for Google’s self-driving cars), the target applications of the project are mobile devices as well as, hypothetically, wearable computing devices. The Tango is expected to enable multitudes of useful applications for a broad range of needs.

The Project Tango devices feature special hardware (an RGB camera, a motion tracking camera, IR depth sensor(s), motion sensors [gyroscope, accelerometer, speed detection sensor, etc.] as well as special chips/algorithms to process such data efficiently) and software designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. According to Google, the sensors allow the device to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around the device.

The project Tango tablet development kit is based on Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor and comes with a 7” display with 1920*1080 resolution, 4GB of LPDDR3 memory, 128GB of NAND flash storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE as well as 4G/LTE connectivity. The development kit is designed for professional developers interested in exploring the future of mobile 3D sensing.

Nvidia hints that the project Tango tablet devkit utilizes GPGPU [general-purpose computing on GPUs] compute technologies to create 3D environmental models. At present the company’s Tegra K1 with 192 stream processors based on the Kepler architecture that supports OpenCL is among a few mobile SoCs with GPU-compute capabilities. Given that Google already encourages developers to use GPGPU technologies, it looks like the project Tango-based devices will require powerful graphics processing units.

The Project Tango tablet development kit goes on sale later this year for $1024.These development kits are not a consumer device and will be available in limited quantities (some believe that only 4000 units will be made). While the project Tango definitely has a lot of potential, just like in case of the project Loon, the Google Contact Lens and other, it is completely unclear when it is set to become a product. Nvidia Corp. on Thursday said that it had started volume shipments of its Jetson TK1 development kits, which are based on the company’s highly-anticipated Tegra K1 system-on-chip with four ARM Cortex-A15 cores, Nvidia Kepler-based graphics and a variety of other hardware. The development kit is aimed at designers of software for embedded applications.

Nowadays programs for mobile and embedded apps rely on general-purpose cores (e.g., ARMv7/ARMv8, Intel x86, AMD x86) when performing general-purpose computations. However, many PC applications these days perform highly-parallel GP computations on graphics processing units compatible with application programming interfaces like OpenCL. In the future it will be possible to use mobile GPUs (such as the Kepler core inside the Tegra K1) to perform general-purpose computations as well. The Jetson TK1 is aimed at developers of GPU-accelerated embedded applications, bringing significant parallel processing performance and exceptional power efficiency to embedded applications.

The Jetson TK1 development kit is a 5” wide by 5” long printed circuit board with a Tegra K1 application processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board NAND flash storage and numerous peripherals and input/output ports. The Jetson K1 is capable of supporting multiple cameras through a variety of interfaces, including USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express x1 slot. In addition, the CSI 1×4 and 1×1 buses are available through the expansion port and can be used to feed camera images directly into the image signal processor (ISP) on Tegra K1 (bypassing memory), for direct image processing. Up to four cameras cab be used for various computer vision applications.

The Jetson TK1 development kit runs Linux for Tegra (L4T), a modified Ubuntu 14.04 Linux distribution provided by Nvidia. The software package supplied with the devkit includes the board support package (BSP) and the software stack that includes CUDA 6 Toolkit, OpenGL 4.4 drivers and the Nvidia VisionWorks Toolkit.

Nvidia hopes that the kit will be used to develop robotics, medicine, security, automotive, and defense applications, among others. Theoretically, at least some GPU-accelerated PC apps could be ported to systems powered by Tegra K1.

Keeping in mind that the development kit is powered by proprietary software, it is hardly possible to create true commercial applications based solely on the Jetson TK1. However, the kit should be sufficient for various experiments.

The Jetson TK1 development kit is available via NewEgg and Microcenter for $192.

Although Nvidia Corp.’s first-generation Shield video game console has not managed to become popular, the company is not giving up and is already working on the second-generation system. One of the first prototypes of the new Shield based on Tegra K1 system-on-chip has even been spotted in AnTuTu benchmark database, an indicator that many Shield 2-related design decisions had been finalised.

Based on the information from AnTuTu databank, the new Nvidia Shield 2 is powered by the Tegra K1 system on-chip with four ARM Cortex-A15 cores (4-plus-1 architecture with one low-power core, clock-rate of the high-performance cores varies between 51MHz and 2524MHz) and Kepler architecture graphics processing unit with 192 stream processors, four ROPs [raster operating units] and so on. It is noteworthy that to speed up time-to-market of the Shield 2 Nvidia decided to use the first version of Tegra K1 featuring ARMv7 cores, not the high-performance Tegra K1 with custom Nvidia Denver ARMv8 cores.

The test model of the new Shield 2 video game console from Nvidia features 1440*810 display, 4GB of LPDDR3 memory (ARM Cortex-A15 supports 40-bit large physical address extensions [LPAE] tech and can address up to 1TB of RAM), 16GB of NAND flash storage as well as Google Android 4.2.2 operating system.

In case the information is correct, then the Nvidia Shield 2 portable video game console will feature a larger-size display with 1440*810 resolution (the first-gen Shield sported 5” screen with 1280*720 resolution), which will mean a re-worked design as well. While the Kepler-based GPU should feature considerably higher performance compared to custom GeForce core inside the original Shield, Nvidia still decided not to install a full-HD display onto the console.

Expect the Shield to have the same controls as on the first-gen: a touch-screen, a D-pad, two Analog Sticks, L/R bumper and trigger buttons as well as X, Y, A, B buttons. Most likely the Shield 2 will inherit many capabilities of the first-gen console, including 2*2 MIMO 2.4 GHz + 5GHz Wi-Fi 802.11n (802.11ac is possible), Bluetooth 3.0, micro USB 2.0, mini HDMI, 3.5mm audio jack, 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS and other things.

Keeping in mind that the original Shield weighs 579 grams (20.42 oz), more than Apple iPad Air, the Shield 2 should probably be lighter and sleeker.

While it is hard to say when the new Shield is supposed to be released, it is logical to expect it to be unveiled in early Summer, just when Nvidia promised other Tegra K1-based devices to emerge.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to hardware, the new Shield 2 features were generally expected: Tegra K1, a lot of LPDDR3 memory, the latest version of Google Android, etc. However, specifications do not determine success of products these days. The original Shield could stream/Miracast PC games and play Google Android titles, yet it has not become popular on the market. The main reasons for that were high price and reluctance of gamers to pay a lot to play Android games that run on smartphones and tablets, which a lot of people already own. To make Shield 2 more appealing than its predecessor, Nvidia will either have to sell it at a low price-point (which it cannot do since it does not earn a lot even on exclusive Tegra-optimised games, so it has to make profits on Shield 2 hardware) or ensure that there is a set of AAA titles that run exclusively on Shield (which is a hard thing to do as big publishers want their new games to work on different hardware platforms). All-in-all, while the Shield 2 will be better than the original one, its actual market success will depend on multiple factors and only time will tell whether it will be more successful than the original game console from Nvidia or not.
