Acer has released plenty of QHD ultrawide monitors over the years but the latest offers a great mix of gaming features and affordability. The new XZ342CU S3 offers 1440p ultrawide gaming at up to 180Hz with an affordable price tag.

The Acer XZ342CU S3 is part of the Nitro XZ2 lineup and has a 34-inch VA panel with a 1500R curvature, 1ms response time (VRB), and a 3440×1440 resolution. The 10-bit (8-bit+FRC) screen covers 90% of the DCI-P3 colour space and has a static contrast ratio of 4000:1 and a brightness of 400 nits, enough for it to earn the VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification.

The monitor's also got a 180Hz refresh rate and is AMD FreeSync Premium Pro-certified. Two 2W speakers, two HDMI 2.0 connections, two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, and a headphone jack are included with the monitor.

The included stand can rotate (-360° to 360°), tilt (-5° to 15°), and is height adjustable up to 130mm. Additionally, you can also mount the monitor on a VESA-compatible stand or arm (75 x 75 mm). The Acer XZ342CU S has been released for $330.

KitGuru says: If you were looking for a decently-sized curved gaming monitor, would you consider the new Acer XZ342CU S3?

Asus has introduced a pair of new high-end gaming monitors at Gamescom 2023. The first was the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM, a 4K gaming monitor with a QD-OLED panel with a 240Hz refresh rate. As for the second one, it was the PG34WCDM, featuring an ultrawide 34-inch OLED panel with a 240Hz refresh rate.

The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM is built around a 32-inch QD-OLED display with a 4K resolution, 99% DCI-P3 colour space coverage, 0.03 ms GTG response time, and a 240Hz refresh rate. In a similar fashion to other Asus gaming monitors, this one features a custom heatsink that keeps its mainboard cool without a fan. Moreover, a graphene film behind the entire panel keeps it cool and comfortable, which Asus claims reduces the burn-in risk.

The lower operating temperatures offered by this cooling solution allow the display to produce and sustain a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM is fitted with two HDMI 2.1 ports, two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs with DSC, a USB Type-C port with 90W power delivery, and DP Alt Mode. The monitor is expected to become available in early 2024.

Then there's the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM, which was also announced this week as part of their Gamescom 2023 showcase. This monitor sports a 34-inch curved OLED display with a 3440×1440 resolution, an 800R curvature, a 0.03 ms GTG response time, and a 240 Hz refresh rate. The display has a peak brightness of 1300 nits and is Nvidia G-Sync compatible.

The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM, like the previously announced model, has a custom heatsink to help control the monitor's temperature. In addition, it offers HDMI 2.1 connections, DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, and a USB-C connector with 90W power delivery, DP Alt Mode, and KVM Switch capabilities. PiP and PbP are also supported on the monitor.

Shortly after announcing availability for three new G90 series gaming monitors, AOC today has begone showcasing its new special edition AGON curved monitor. This is an impressive 35-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide display with a silky smooth 120Hz refresh rate, which will be showcased at the Intel Extreme Masters tournament this weekend.

For those who don't know the Intel Extreme Masters Tournament is a big esports event, bringing the world's best 16 pro CS:GO teams together for a face off and the chance to win a portion of a $500,000 prize pool. AOC-sponsored team, G2 Esports, is participating, giving AOC the perfect opportunity to show off its new all-black special edition version of the curved AGAG352UCG6 monitor.

The AOC AG352UCG6 Black Edition offers the perfect balance between ultrawide quality and high refresh rates with a 3440×1440 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and G-Sync support. Most popular 3440×1440 monitors on the market currently cap out at 100Hz, so the jump to 120Hz is a welcome boost.

This particular monitor is currently planned to be made available in May, but if you happen to be attending the tournament this weekend, then you'll get to see it up-close well ahead of time.

KitGuru Says: I made the switch over to 1440p ultrawide last year, it is certainly something I would recommend. Though I do find it ironic that a 3440×1440 monitor is being showcased at a CS:GO tournament, when the game has yet to be updated to properly support 21:9 aspect ratios. That is purely a Valve problem though.

We have seen a huge surge in the popularity of 21:9 ultra-wide PC monitors over the last couple of years. This popularity has also led to more and more ultra-wide monitors hitting the market, as monitor makers attempt to one-up each other. This week, Philips is hoping to win people over with its brand new 349X7FJEW 34-inch monitor, featuring a deep curve and 3440×1440 resolution.

The new 34-inch 349X7FJEW display is designed in an UltraWide 21:9 format, giving users plenty of room to multitask. This coupled with the 3440×1440 resolution should ensure a sharp image with plenty of room on-screen. With this being a premium monitor, the stand also comes with all of the adjustments you would expect, with tilt, height adjust and pivot.

This monitor comes with an 1800R curve, which is a deeper curve than many other monitors. This is an approach that Philips appears to believe in, with Artem Khomenko, Philips product manager stating that the company aims “to bring the benefits of curved displays” to as many users as possible. The immersion effect seems to be a big selling point for this monitor in particular.

This particular monitor isn't aimed at gamers, so don't expect crazy high refresh rates (its a 60Hz VA panel). However, it is aimed at those using their PCs for work. One particular example would be video and photo editing, with support for 117 percent of the sRGB cooler gamut, this monitor should provide accurate colours and plenty of space to get things done.

Aside from that, this monitor also comes with a LowBlue setting, which should help reduce eye strain, There is also an integrated USB hub, so you have some extra ports to connect up other devices.

The only downside here is the price, with Philips pricing the 349X7FJEW at £759 here in the UK. These monitors should be available by the end of the month.

KitGuru Says: I've been thinking about picking up an ultra-wide monitor for a while now, though I'm having a hard time justifying the jump over my current dual-monitor setup. Are any of you planning on switching to an ultra-wide monitor this year? Is there a particular monitor you have your eye on?

With ultra-wide monitors becoming more and more popular, display manufacturers have been working hard to increase things like resolution and refresh rate in order to get gamers interested. Now, we are finally at a point where 3440×1440 ultra-wide monitors with 144Hz refresh are a viable option and we should have two out this year.

While high refresh-rate 3440×1440 monitors have been around for a little while, they have been limited to 100Hz so far, which will change this year according to a report from tftcentral, which shows that AU Optronics (an off-shoot of Acer) will have a 30-inch and a 35-inch QHD ultra-wide monitor with 144Hz refresh rate available in 2016.

Predator Z35_wp_game_02_678x452

This would push things beyond the bandwidth limitations of DisplayPort 1.2, which also means we may be seeing DisplayPort 1.3 this year on monitors. Both panels will be based on VA technology and with a release in Q2 or Q3 this year though we don't have any pricing information at this time, unfortunately. Other specifications of the panel seem to include a 3000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness a 2000R curvature and 172/178 degree viewing angles.

KitGuru Says: Ultra-wide monitors have become increasingly popular recently and while many gamers have been happy with the current 100Hz limitations, there will undoubtedly be some waiting for 3440×1440 models with a full 144Hz refresh rate. Are any of you planning on going ultra-wide this year? Will you be holding out for 144Hz 3440×1440 models?

It’s no surprise that ultra-wide curved screens such as the 34-inch Philips Brilliance BDM3490UC are becoming popular as they present a compelling alternative to traditional 16:9 displays. The extra width and subtle curvature gives a cinema-like experience in movies, and for desktop use, the extra pixels means more documents open on screen at any one time.

Around a year ago, Philips made a big splash in the consumer PC display market with the impressive Philips Brilliance BDM4065UC (review HERE), a massive 16:9 40-inch 4K display with an AHVA screen and a particularly low price tag.

4K is undoubtedly the future of 16:9 displays, but an alternative option is now available in the form of ultra-wide monitors. The Philips BDM3490UC is one example of this new kind of display. It has a WQHD resolution (3,440 x 1440) rather than 4K, and at 34 inches wide, it presents a screen aspect ratio of 21:9.

BDM3490UC-650px

This is exactly 880 pixels wider than a standard 16:9 display with a resolution of 2,560×1,440.

It’s also curved at the sides, bringing the far edges closer to your peripheral vision and enhancing the visual effect of the ultra-wide screen. The effect is subtle but definitely enhances the overall picture.

The curvature on displays is described with a figure that represents, in millimeters, the radius of the circle that would be formed if multiple display were placed next to each other.

The curvature of the Philips Brilliance BDM3490UC is rated as 3800R, so the full circle would have a radius of 3.8 metres. If the angle of the curve was greater, or the screen was less wide, a smaller circle would be formed. So higher numbers mean less curvature, and lower numbers mean a sharper angle. Most displays use a curvature that hovers around this 3800R figure, but not all.

The Philips Brilliance BDM3490UC is a premium display in every way. It has superb external design and build quality, with three HDMI inputs, DTS audio support via two 7-watt speakers and its AH-IPS display supports 1.07 billion colours, using 8-bit colour depth with FRC, or frame rate control, an algorithm to enhance colour depth. It has a quoted 5ms response time, fairly typical of IPS screens.

There’s also a picture-in/by-picture mode to view multiple inputs on screen at once and a wide range of colour settings including multiple gamma and Kelvin presets.

Specification:

  • Screen size: 34.1-inch
Native resolution: 3,440×1,440
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz
  • Panel type: AH-IPS
  • Display inputs: HDMI 2.0 x1, HDMI 1.4 x2, DisplayPort 1.2 x1
  • USB hub: 4x USB 3
  • Tilt: -5/20 degrees
  • Raise: No
  • Swivel: No
  • Other: 3800R curvature, PIP/PBP mode, 2x 7w speakers

Asus recently unveiled a new line of very impressive sounding ROG Swift gaming monitors and soon, you will be able to pick one up, as Overclockers UK has first dibs on pre-orders. Right now, three new monitors are up on the store, one being the Asus PG279Q, a 2560×1440 IPS panel running at 165Hz with G-Sync technology. There is also a 27-inch 4K G-sync 60Hz monitor on the way and a 34-inch Ultra-Wide, with G-Sync and a 100Hz refresh rate.

asus_rog_swift_pg279q

Stock isn't expected until November and it will be pretty limited. However, you can still pre-order each monitor. The Asus PG279Q will set you back £749.99, you will also need a GTX 900 series GPU in order to get the maximum 165Hz refresh rate so keep that in mind.

asus_rog_swift_PG27AQ

Next up on the list is the Asus ROG Swift PG278Q, the official answer to Acer's own 4K G-Sync TN monitor. The Asus 27-inch 4K G-Sync monitor comes with an IPS display for better colour accuracy and a 60Hz refresh rate for those who value higher resolution over refresh rate. This one is available to pre-order for £799.99.

Finally, we have the new Asus ROG Swift PG348Q, a massive 34-inch ultra-wide offering with a curved display. It comes with an IPS panel, a 3440×1440 resolution, a 100Hz refresh rate and finally, Nvidia's G-Sync variable refresh rate technology. Obviously a monitor of this calibre doesn't come cheap, those wanting the ultimate ultra-wide gaming experience can pre-order this model for £1199.99.

While the Asus PG279Q and the PG278Q are expected to arrive in November ahead of Christmas, the ultra-wide monitor unfortunately can't be guaranteed in time for Christmas and may not ship until January, so keep that in mind.

This monitor is going to be marketed towards gamers, with a dedicated ‘Game Boost' feature, which will adjust color and contrast depending on the current scene on display. It will have built-in speakers but as always, you are probably better off with your own pair. This monitor won't be cheap though, over in the US it will cost a hefty $1199.99.

If you are in the market for an ultra-wide 21:9 monitor then Overclockers UK has you covered as the retailer will be exclusively selling the LG 34UC97-P 34 Inch 3440×1440 curved LED monitor for the next few months. Originally, LG didn't plan to bring this monitor to the UK but OCUK purchasing manager, Andrew ‘Gibbo' Gibson, managed to convince them otherwise.

The screen has a 21:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3440×1440, showing 2.4 times more visual information at one time than a regular 1920×1080 monitor. Additionally, LG decided to go with an 8-bit +FRC  IPS panel, allowing for a 99 per cent sRGB color gamut rating. Due to the IPS panel, there is a slightly slower 5ms response time, rather than the 1ms response time you would find on a TN monitor, although the color benefits of IPS often outweigh this.

LG Super-Wide

The curved display nearly encompasses 180 degrees, allowing the user to cover nearly all of their peripheral vision, bringing users a new gaming and media experience. For connectivity, the screen has two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort connection and two Thunderbolt ports. There's also two USB 3.0 ports and some built-in speakers, which promise “deeper bass and crystal clear highs” with MaxxAudio technology.

This monitor will set buyers back £979.99 and won't be sold anywhere else in the UK until 2015.
