Today not only marks the launch of AMD B550 motherboards, but it is also the launch for new 3rd Gen Ryzen ‘XT' series desktop processors. The Ryzen 9 3900XT, Ryzen 7 3800XT and Ryzen 5 3600XT all join the lineup today, offering better power efficiency and performance gains.

As explained by AMD Senior VP, Saeid Moshkelani, Ryzen 3000 XT CPUs utilise “additional optimisations to the 7nm manufacturing process to deliver industry leading single-thread performance”. You can expect higher boost speeds while maintaining the same TDP as non-XT counterparts.

Below you can find the specs for each new XT CPU:

MODEL CORES/

THREADS

BOOST/ BASE FREQUENCY (GHZ) TOTAL CACHE (MB) TDP (WATTS) Platform SEP (USD) EXPECTED AVAILABILITY
AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT 12/24 Up to 4.7/3.8 70 105 AM4 $499 July 7, 2020
AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT 8/16 Up to 4.7/3.9 36 105 AM4 $399 July 7, 2020
AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT 6/12 Up to 4.5/3.8 35 95 AM4 $249 July 7, 2020

These CPUs are expected to be available at retail starting on the 7th of July. A month later, in August 2020, AMD A520 chipset motherboards will also become available, completing the lineup of motherboard options for 3rd Gen Ryzen.

KitGuru Says: The single-threaded performance gain is said to be around 4% for each CPU versus its non-XT version, so those who already own a 3rd Gen Ryzen CPU don't seem to be missing out on much. However, this could be a tempting option for those who have yet to upgrade. What do you all think of the Ryzen 3000XT series?

Today, AMD is announcing its 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 series processors in addition to the B550 chipset for Socket AM4 motherboards. The new Ryzen 3 series will include the Ryzen 3 3300X and the Ryzen 3 3100, both housing four cores and eight threads.

As you would expect, these new Ryzen 3 CPUs are based on the Zen 2 architecture and leverage Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), giving twice the bandwidth and double the threads to work with.

You can see the basic specification sheet in the table below:

MODEL CORES/ THREADS TDP
(Watts)
BOOST/BASE FREQ (GHz) TOTAL CACHE (MB) PLATFORM SEP (USD) Expected Availability
AMD Ryzen™ 3 3300X 4C/8T 65 4.3/3.8 18 AM4 120 May 2020
AMD Ryzen™ 3 3100 4C/8T 65 3.9/3.6 18 AM4 99 May 2020

As part of a press release, AMD's Senior VP and GM of Client Business, Saeid Moshkelani, noted that this is part of the company's commitment to “providing solutions that meet and exceed” demands for all levels of computing.

These new CPUs come accompanied by the new B550 chipset, which will ensure more cost-effective motherboards for those building on a budget. B550 will be the only mainstream modern chipset to support PCIe 4.0, so you can still benefit from extremely fast SSD speeds. The Ryzen 3 series is coming in May, but B550 motherboards will be a little behind, with models from the likes of ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, Colorful, GIGABYTE and MSI expected in June.

Now, a fix is on the way, with motherboard partners currently working to implement the latest firmware update.

Last week, AMD officially acknowledged user issues with 3rd Gen Ryzen processors, confirming that there is an issue affecting boost clock speeds for some customers. Now this week, AMD has taken some steps towards fixing this problem with a new firmware update.

Motherboard partners have received the new update, which is based on AGESA 1003ABBA. This update will implement a fix to enhance 3rd Gen Ryzen boost speeds by approximately 25-50MHz under various workloads. The update also includes an ‘activity filter' that allows the CPU boost algorithm to disregard intermittent OS and background application usage spikes to smooth out desktop idle behaviour.

The new firmware update is with motherboard partners now and AMD expects this to be implemented into user-downloadable BIOS updates within two weeks time. Additionally, on the 30th of September, AMD is releasing the AMD Monitoring SDK, which will support those building a monitoring utility that can reliably report CPU metrics.

KitGuru Says: A fix for Ryzen boost speeds is on the way, although it will be a couple of weeks before we begin to see feedback from users. Hopefully this does resolve the final issues though. Have any of you upgraded to 3rd Gen Ryzen this year? Have you had any problems with boost clock speeds?

While 3rd Gen Ryzen has mostly been positively received, there have been some issues along the way. One of the main issues currently is that a good number of 3rd Gen Ryzen owners aren't able to hit advertised boost clock speeds. Fortunately, AMD is aware and may have found a fix.

Here is the full statement from AMD:

“AMD is pleased with the strong momentum of 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors in the PC enthusiast and gaming communities. We closely monitor community feedback on our products and understand that some 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen users are reporting boost clock speeds below the expected processor boost frequency. While processor boost frequency is dependent on many variables including workload, system design, and cooling solution, we have closely reviewed the feedback from our customers and have identified an issue in our firmware that reduces boost frequency in some situations. We are in the process of preparing a BIOS update for our motherboard partners that addresses that issue and includes additional boost performance optimizations. We will provide an update on September 10 to the community regarding the availability of the BIOS.”

The statement comes after professional overclocker, Der8auer, conducted a survey of over 2,000 users, with the majority of them reporting that their 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs weren't hitting rated boost clock speeds.

AMD is working on a firmware update now that should help address the problem, but it will also require a motherboard BIOS update, so it could take a while to fully roll out.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you had problems with boost clock speeds on a 3rd Gen Ryzen? If so, which CPU are you currently using?

There is no doubt that so far, Ryzen has been a huge success for AMD. Not only has competition been restored to the mainstream and high-end gaming segments of the CPU market, but Threadripper also posed a huge challenge to Intel’s HEDT line up. We are closing in on the launch of 3rd Gen Ryzen processors now and the specs being touted are very impressive, but it does look like there is little room left for Threadripper, which was quietly removed from AMD’s 2019 roadmap.

As part of AMD’s investors relations presentation for May 2019, the upcoming product roadmap was updated, with 3rd Gen Ryzen desktop processors pinned for a mid-year launch. Curiously though, Threadripper has been left off the list. This could simply mean that next-gen Threadripper is now a 2020 product, but when you take a look at reported leaks for Ryzen 3000, it looks like there might not actually be much need for Threadripper this time around, as we may see ‘Ryzen 9’ introduced as a replacement.

According to AdoredTV, AMD is going to have Ryzen 9, Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 this generation. This move would fundamentally change the line-up, with Ryzen 9 adopting Threadripper’s monstrous 16-cores and 32-threads while also boosting clock speeds to 4.3/5.1GHz base/boost. Ryzen 7 would then move up to 12C/24T, Ryzen 5 would be 8C/16T and finally, Ryzen 3 would be 6C/12T.

More recently, serial leaker TUM_APISAK, has said online that he has received a Zen 2 engineering sample, featuring 16-cores running on an X570 motherboard, rather than a board with a TR4 socket. Beyond that, we also know that James Prior, who formerly championed Threadripper, is no longer working at AMD.

Of course, much of this is rumour and speculation for now. Threadripper could return in 2020 with EPYC levels of cores/threads. The Threadripper 2990WX did start moving in this direction, offering up 32 cores and 64 threads. However, it could end up being a less appealing option compared to Ryzen 9 if the ultra high core/thread count is only useful in a limited number of scenarios.

Either way, Computex is coming up at the end of the month, so hopefully we will have this all straightened out then.

KitGuru Says: If the current leaks are accurate, then 3rd Gen Ryzen is going to be a very exciting launch, even if it does end up leaving Threadripper in the dust. Are many of you holding off on upgrading for next-gen Ryzen?
