DiskStation DS1019+ is a 5-bay NAS that sits under Synology's Personal & Home User and SMB banners, due to its positioning as a scalable NAS for small offices and IT enthusiasts. Powered by a quad-core Intel processor backed by 8GB of memory, it also packs a pair of NVMe supporting M.2 ports.

Powered by an Intel Celeron J3455 processor clocked at 1.5GHz (boost up to 2.3GHz) the DiskStation DS1019+ comes in a single 8GB memory option. The memory comes in the shape of a pair of 4GB DDR3L 1866 SO-DIMM in the two SO-DIMM slots. If you feel like you need more memory at a later date, then you are out of luck as, according to the spec sheet, 8GB is the maximum amount of memory supported.

It has an AES-NI hardware encryption engine and a hardware-accelerated transcoding engine which supports H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2 and VC-1 formats at a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 (4K) at 30fps.

Synology quotes Sequential throughput performance for the DS1019+ as up to 226MB/s for reads and 222MB/s for writes but a quick heads up, those figures are with both LAN ports being used in Link Aggregation mode.

Synology back the DS1019+ with a 3-year warranty.

The last member of Synology's DiskStation Plus series of NAS drives we looked at was the 4-bay DS916+. This time we have the more business orientated DiskStation DS1517+, a quad core powered 5-bay NAS which has been designed to handle data intensive tasks such as on-the-fly encryption in the Workgroup & SMD market segments.

Synology's Plus series of NAS incorporates 2-bay to 12-bay desktop tower designs as well as 4-bay and 12-bay rack mounted units.

At the heart of the DS1517+ is an Intel Atom C2538 CPU running at 2.4GHz. The C2538 is a 22nm quad core processor with 2MB of cache and a TDP of 15W.  Memory wise the DS1517+ comes pre-installed with either 2GB or 8GB of DDR3 and it was the latter version that Synology supplied for this review. Should you require more memory, the DS1517+ supports up to 16GB of memory via two SO-DIMM slots. There also four Gigabit Ethernet Ports that support Link Aggregation for faster network connections and failure protection.

Synology has also built in a degree of future proofing into the DS1517+ in the shape of a PCIe slot. This Gen 2 x8 slot (x4 link speed) PCIe slot currently supports Synology's M2D17 dual M.2 SATA adapter card or a 10GbE NIC.

Specifications

  • Intel Atom 2.4GHz CPU
  • 8GB Memory.
  • AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption.
  • PCIe slot.
  • 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports.

Compared to Linux-based devices, NAS boxes using Windows OS are pretty thin on the ground. One company that has kept the Windows flag flying with a range of devices is Thecus. The Thecus Windows Storage Server range is split into two camps, Large Business and SMB/Home, and it's from the latter one that the 5-bay W5810 is the current flagship model.

Designed for small and medium businesses of up to 50 employees, the W5810 uses Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials as the operating system. A very neat design feature is that this OS is stored on its own separate drive – a 64GB SSD (ADATA SP600) which leaves all five drive bays free for storage purposes.

Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials is a powerful chunk of software offering support for Data duplication, Active Directory, Storage Spaces, automatic client computer backup and restore and a whole lot more besides.

Powered by an Intel Celeron J1900 processor clocked at 2.00GHz (burst up to 2.42GHz) the W5810 comes with 4GB of DDR3L memory as standard. There are two SO-DIMM slots so the memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 8GB if needed.

Specifications

  • Intel Celeron J1900 Quad-Core CPU.
  • 4GB DDR3L-1600 memory.
  • 64GB SSD for OS.
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet
  • Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

We reviewed Drobo's 5N home/SOHO 5-bay tower NAS last year and now the next generation 5N, the 5N2 has arrived. Drobo claim it's their fastest 5-bay NAS to date with a more powerful processor than the original as well as an additional LAN port to offer improved network performance and failover protection.

The 5N2 uses a Marvell Armada Quad core 1.6Ghz processor backed by 2GB of memory to give better performance than the original 5N. Also helping to give the performance a boost is the addition of a second LAN port which brings Link Aggregation support to the device.

It provides data protection in the form of DroboDR, the companies disaster recovery solution and an internal battery which writes any data in the cache to disk in the event of power loss to the 5N2.

But as with all Drobo's the real star of the show is the BeyondRAID storage technology the device uses.

BeyondRAID technology
Drobo’s BeyondRAID technology aims to take the best part of RAID – data protection and adds much greater ease of implementation and management while offering larger capacities. Unlike the traditional RAID where there is a protection free option (RAID0), BeyondRAID has only protected levels and then just two; Single disk redundancy (think RAID5) and Dual disk redundancy (akin to RAID6).

BeyondRAID's advantages soon become apparent when you begin to use it. For starters you are not tied to using drives of the same capacity or speed, you can mix and match drive sizes. Just load any drives into the 5N2 and the technology will do the rest.

Another major plus point comes when adding capacity to a RAID group. With traditional RAID the data has to be moved off the group to free all the drive space, then the new drive is added to the group (must be the same size as the others), the array reformatted and the data replaced or the data is migrated to a larger RAID group, either way, it’s a very time-consuming procedure. BeyondRAID simplifies this whole procedure offering two ways of increasing the capacity.

Firstly if the Drobo device has a free drive bay then it’s simply a matter of adding another drive or if all the bays are full just swapping out the smallest drive and replacing it with a larger one and as hot swapping is supported there is no need to power down the device. There can also be huge savings in time as there is no need for any of the data to be moved during the operation.

BeyondRAID Features

  • Thin Provisioning
  • Instant Expansion
  • Mixed Drive Size Utilization
  • Automatic Protection Levels
  • Single – or Dual-Disk Redundancy
  • Virtual Hot Spare
  • Data Aware
  • Drive Re-ordering

An Introduction to BeyondRAID
Ever since its introduction in the late 1980's, RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) has become the defacto technology for building large amounts of storage with built-in data protection against random disk failures. However large RAID arrays can be complicated to setup, time-consuming to maintain and problematic when boosting capacity.

Drobo's BeyondRAID technology aims to take the best part of RAID – data protection and adds much greater ease of implementation and management while offering larger capacities. Unlike the traditional RAID where there is a protection free option (RAID0), BeyondRAID has only protected levels and then just two; Single disk redundancy (think RAID5) and Dual disk redundancy (akin to RAID6)
