Samsung is about to launch the successor to the 970 Pro. Available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB  storage capacities, the Samsung 980 Pro will use PCIe Gen4 x4 and NVMe 1.3c interfaces to offer transfer speeds that double what we can expect from PCIe Gen3 SSDs, while also being backwards-compatible with PCIe 3.0 interfaces.

Samsung accidentally went live early with a listing and full specifications for the 980 Pro NVMe SSD last night. The proper page (link) has since been taken down at the time of publishing. However, the folks at Guru3D got a good look at the contents beforehand, bringing a full breakdown of features and specifications.

With sequential read speeds of up to 7000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 5000MB/s, the Samsung 980 Pro can reach up to 1M random read/write IOPS (4K, QD32). The standard M.2 2280 form factor allows you to easily mount the SSD in desktops and laptops, offering a versatile storage solution for different workloads.

Ideally used in “heavy-duty applications”, the Samsung 980 Pro uses a unique cooling system to ensure stable performance for long periods. The SSD's controller is nickel coated to offer superior heat transfer, and the NAND chip has a dedicated heat spreader to reduce its temperatures. Additionally, this SSD features “Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology” to automatically control its temperature, increasing the durability and performance during its lifespan.

With a rated MTBF of 1.5M hours, the Samsung 980 Pro supports AES 256-bit encryption, Garbage collection, TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. You can also use Samsung Magician software to monitor the SSD's health, protect your data, optimise the SDD's performance, and ensure that you receive all the latest firmware updates for your drive.

Pricing and availability have not been shared yet, but we should get those details once Samsung is ready to unveil this SSD properly. One thing we do already know is that the Samsung 980 Pro SSD will be backed by a 5-year warranty or 600TBW warranty

The post Lexar NM610 500GB SSD Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
A few months ago we looked at Lexar's NM600 SSD, and now it is the turn of its successor, the NM610, to go under the spotlight. Priced at just over £70 for the 500GB model, what sort of performance can this drive offer to those looking for an affordable NVMe SSD?

The previous NM600 was only available in two capacities, 240GB and 480GB. The NM610 not only has slightly larger capacities; 250GB and 500GB, it also has a 1TB flagship model.

The official Sequential speed ratings for the three drives are; 250GB up to 2,000MB/s reads and up to 1,200MB/s writes while the 500GB and 1TB models share the same up to 2,100MB/s read, 1,600MB/s write performance figures. Incidentally, the 250GB and 500GB figures are exactly the same as the 240GB and 480GB NM600 drives.

Random 4K performance is quoted as up to 110,000 IOPS and 151,000 IOPS for reads and writes respectively for the 250GB drive with the 500GB and 1TB drive having the same up to 188,000 IOPS and 156,000 IOPS for reads and writes respectively. Again the two smaller drive figures are the same as the previous NM600 drive.

Endurance ratings for the 500GB drive are 250TB TBW with the 250GB rated at 125TB and the 1TB drive 500TB.

If you have been saving up for a few PC upgrades, then now might be the best time to shop around. Black Friday deals are already starting to do the rounds and Amazon has some pretty great ones for SSDs today, including a 1TB Samsung 970 M.2 drive for just £175.

If you are looking to make the jump to a speedier M.2 SSD, then Samsung's V-NAND equipped 970 models come highly recommended. Typically, you would be paying close to £300 for a 1TB model, but today Amazon UK has them discounted to £175.

If you don't need quite that much space, then the 500GB 970 EVO M.2 drive is also on sale, dropping down to £89.

Of course, Amazon's deals refresh each day, so it will be worth keeping an eye out. There are also laptops, monitors, peripherals and console gaming accessories popping up on sale regularly.

KitGuru Says: That 1TB M.2 SSD is looking like a steal right now. Are any of you shopping around for deals this week? Is there anything in particular that you are hoping to pick up?

The post Crucial MX500 500GB SSD Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
The latest SSD range to enter the market from Crucial is the MX500. Aimed at the mainstream market segment, the MX500 is a replacement for the MX300 family using Micron's latest 2nd generation 64-layer 3D TLC NAND instead of the 32-layer used in the MX300 series.

Unlike previous generations of MX drives, the MX500 uses a Silicon Motion SM2258 controller instead of a Marvell part. The four-channel SM2258 is the same controller found in the BX300 drive range.

The MX500 family of drives consists of four capacities in a 2.5in format; 250GB, 500GB (the drive supplied by Crucial for this review), 1TB and the flagship 2TB drive. It is also available as a 2280 SATA M.2 with the same capacities minus the 2TB flagship drive. The 2.5in range can be brought as stand-alone drives or bundled with 2.5in to 3.5 in converter enclosure.

Sequential Read/Write performance for the 500GB drive is quoted at 560MB/s and 510MB/s respectively. All drives in the range, both 2.5in and M.2 have the same figures. Random 4K performance is quoted at 95,000 IOPS for reads and 90,000 for writes, again the same for both formats of the drive.

Endurance for the 500GB drive is quoted as 180TB (TBW) which works out at around 98GB of drive writes a day for the length of the 5 year warranty Crucial back the drive with.

Physical Specifications:
Usable Capacities: 500GB
NAND Components: Micron 64-layer 3D TLC NAND
NAND Controller: Silicon Motion SM2258
Cache: 512MB DDR3L-1866
Interface: Serial ATA (SATA) 6Gb/s (SATA III)
Form Factor: 2.5in 7mm
Dimensions: 69.85 x 7 x 100 mm

Seagate Technology on Sunday unveiled what it claims to be the world’s thinnest portable hard disk drive, the Seagate Seven. The new drive is made of stainless steel and has 500GB capacity. The manufacturer advertises its new product as the thinnest way to store half of terabyte of data. Being unique, the new HDD is clearly not really affordable, but it is not as expensive as ultra-thin NAND flash-based solutions.

The Seagate Seven external hard disk drive features SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface and, as the name suggests, is only 7mm thick. The product weighs 90 grams, which is less than typical smartphones do. Unfortunately, since the drive is not equipped with any wireless interfaces, it is not compatible with smartphones and tablets.

seagate_seven_external_hdd_2

The new Seven hard drive from Seagate is a unique external solution that uses a number of exclusive know-hows from the company. The design of the product resembles a bare HDD, which means that it does not contain an off-the-shelf hard drive, like other external storage products, but is a specially-built device that uses mechanisms from other hard drives. For example, the low profile motor technologies used in the “bare drive” were originally designed to include extreme Gyro handling capabilities with tablets and thin computing in mind.

The Seagate Seven is likely based on technologies originally developed for the Seagate Laptop Ultrathin HDD with 500GB capacity that comes in 2.5” form-factor and is only 5mm thick. The drive sports 5400rpm spindle speed, 16MB cache buffer, Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface, sustained 100MB/s transfer rate as well as 5.6ms average latency. The drive consumes around 1.4W during typical operations as well as only 0.47W in idle mode.

seagate_seven_external_hdd

“Seagate Seven is designed to speak to this history, while looking forward to the future of where storage technology is headed,” said Mark Whitby, senior vice president of Seagate Branded Group. “We believe that Seagate Seven will resonate with those who want the latest trend in mechanical design while inspiring the user to create great experiences and memories.”

The Seagate Seven will be widely available in mid- to late-January for a suggested retail price of $99.99. Pre-orders can be made on Seagate.com and Amazon.com.

KitGuru Says: While the Seagate Seven is clearly among the most technologically advanced storage solutions on the market, 500GB capacity is hardly a lot and is not sufficient for many use cases, especially keeping in mind that there are a lot of faster NAND flash-based storage devices of comparable capacity. On the other hand, if you are a road warrior with a MacBook Air and want to keep a small movie collection with you all the time, the Seagate Seven may be just what the doctor ordered…

With a special £40 cashback deal in place, Aria has moved the price of the 500GB Samsung 840 SSD into the realms of ‘amazing'. To find out how to pick up one of these drives at £211, before stocks run out, read on.

With a 540MB/sec read speed, your whole world would be a better place with one of these drives – if it costs just over £200.

For a desktop system, it would mean a lot of flexibility – working with all of your serious projects on the desktop (C:) – and only periodically having to think ‘Ah yes, must back up to my spinning drives'.

But for a serious notebook user? This is perfect.

You may not have multiple hard drive slots available – so you need all the storage you can get in the one spot.  And 500GB will be enough to keep you going for some time.

To find out what you have to do in order to get this limited stock cashback offer from Aria, click here.

We're not sure there's anything else we could add to make the 500GB Samsung 840 at £211 seem more attractive – but here's Kristina to try.
