As 4K ultra-high-definition monitors migrate to mainstream price points, 5K UHD displays are set to become a new de-facto standard for ultra-premium segment.

Apple and Dell will not be alone with 5K (5120*2880) ultra-high-definition displays next year as more makers are going to join them, according to a media report. A number of display vendors are working on ultra HD 5K monitors for commercial, business and gaming market segments, reports DigiTimes web-site.

LG Display and Philips are among the companies to offer 5K UHD displays in 2015. Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest supplier of displays, will also likely introduce its own 5K UHD monitor next year.

Most panel makers, including AU Optronics, will focus monitor panel production on larger sizes in addition to 4K units, it is reported. LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics will likely be the leading suppliers of 5K panels and displays.

Global shipments of LCD displays are expected to reach 136 million units in 2014, 132 million units in 2015 and 128 million in 2017 because of declines of desktop PC sales.

KitGuru Says: The success of 5K displays will depend not only on their competitive pricing, but also on the success of 21:9 aspect ratio in general. At present many consider it too wide, but if a lot of people try it and find comfortable, such monitors may easily enter mainstream market.

Apple is finally pushing out its OS X Yosemite update to the public, featuring better power optimizations and major updates to all first party apps, including Safari, iTunes and the iWorks suite. A new version of OS X also means a new line of Macs, here is what Apple has in store for us today:

Starting off with the iMac, the famous all in ones will now come equipped with retina displays and the rumors were absolutely true, the highest end 27 Inch model will feature a 5K resolution, that's seven times more pixels than a HD TV and 67 per cent more than a 4K display. The screen comes in at just 5mm thick and comes equipped with an Apple designed timing controller, which helps raise backlight energy efficiency by 30 per cent.

Powering the 5K iMac will be a 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU but you can upgrade this to a 4GHz Core i7. Graphically, Apple went with AMD's R9 solution this time around, more specifically, the R9 M290x. Thunderbolt 2 and a 1TB fusion drive will now come standard in the iMacs.

The 5K iMac starts at $2499, which is pretty aggressive pricing considering how expensive 4K still is. The base model 21.5 Inch iMac will cost $1099, the base 27 Inch model will cost $1799.

Additionally, the Mac Mini is getting an upgrade, with a new 4th generation Intel CPU, PCIe based SSDs, support for 802.11AC WiFi and two Thunderbolt 2 ports, these come in pretty cheap, starting at $499.

There were no new Macbook Pros or Macbook Airs announced today, unfortunately. This is likely down to the fact that Intel can't supply enough Broadwell CPUs yet, so Apple is forced to wait a while before refreshing the lineup.

KitGuru Says: That 5K iMac seems pretty powerful for an all in one machine, particularly if you upgraded to a 4GHz Intel Core i7. What do you guys think about Apple's jump to 5K?

Apple is due to refresh its line of iMac all in one systems later this month, alongside the launch of new iPads and Macbooks so as you would expect, the rumor mill is starting to turn. Apparently, the new 27 Inch high end iMac will feature a 5K screen, much like the one Dell showed off a few weeks ago, Apple may also be switching from Nvidia to AMD for its GPUs.

Intel's Broadwell CPUs aren't available just yet so this year's iMacs will be getting a refreshed Haswell CPU, in addition to a 5120×2880 screen. For those of you who don't know, this resolution contains 14,745,600 pixels, making it significantly more demanding than 4K, which contains 8,294,400 pixels.

Apple re-kindled its relationship with AMD last year with the launch of the Mac Pro, which featured AMD's FirePro graphics cards. However, it looks like Apple is interested in AMD's non professional GPUs as well, according to new rumors, low end 1080p iMacs will stick to Intel's Iris Pro graphics while higher end models will use R9 or R7 series chips.

For the last couple of years, Apple has been using Nvidia's GPUs in its systems, current iMacs and Macbook Pros use the GT 750m Kepler based chips.

The refreshed iMac and Macbook models will presumably ship with Apple's already announced, OS X Yosemite update as development recently entered the final stages.

KitGuru Says: The top end iMacs are going to be very expensive if they truly utilize 5K screens. The company will also have to pack in plenty of graphics power. Do you guys feel like display technology is being a bit rushed at the moment?
