The iPhone has been through plenty of iterations over the years, starting off as a plastic-cased device, then making the jump to glass with the iPhone 4 and then switching to an aluminium build with the iPhone 5S/iPhone 6. However, it looks like the company will be switching back in 2017, as analysts claim that the iPhone will have its next major re-design with an all-glass enclosure and possibly an AMOLED display.

We already know that Apple and Samsung have hammered out a deal for future OLED iPhone displays, though this report suggests AMOLED, which could be a possibility. According to KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple's major iPhone re-design won't be coming in 2016 with the iPhone 7 but rather, in 2017.

As more and more Android device makers switch to metal-cased phones, Apple's switch back to glass could help it stand out from the crowd once again in terms of design. Specifics about the new 2017 iPhone design weren't mentioned but it is said to be more akin to the iPhone 4.

The obvious downside to all of this is that if true, Apple will be breaking its traditional tick-tock cycle, meaning the 2016 iPhone 7 won't be too different to the iPhone 6S but next year's iPhone should see some major improvements and changes.

KitGuru Says: While we still have this year's iPhone to look forward to, a lot of reports seem to be focussing on what is going on next year instead, indicating that this year's release may not be that exciting. Are any of you currently using an iPhone? I'm still on my 5S at the moment but it doesn't sound like the 2016 iPhone will be too tempting.

A while back we heard rumors that Apple planned to release a new 4 inch iPhone this year to take over from the 5s. The phone would effectively be an iPhone 6s mini, but now according to new supply chain sources, the company's plans have changed.

According to Wei Feng Network, citing ‘supply chain sources' Apple has not made any orders for a smaller 4-inch iPhone and there is currently no indication that they will. Sources speculate that due to the high sales of Apple's latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the company won't want to revisit the smaller design.

It is possible that a smaller device may receive poor response, much like the iPhone 5c did.

However, even if a 4 inch iPhone for launch this year isn't in production yet, there is still time for Apple to place an order. Rumors suggesting that Apple will release a smaller device again this year also came from anonymous supply chain sources, so there is no telling who is right.

The market for smaller devices is likely a lot smaller than what it was a few years ago thanks to the surge in Android popularity, coupled with the success of Apple's latest devices.

KitGuru Says: So to sum up, we don't really know anything about Apple's iPhone release plans for this year. Aside from the fact that Samsung is already producing A9 SoCs. We will have to wait for some more concrete information to come along regarding Apple's iPhone sizes for the year.

This has not been the week for Apple users, first the new Macbook Pro's with retina display were experiencing keyboard and trackpad issues and now the new iPhone 5S is suffering from a battery defect.

These problems have come from Apple using a new battery that it said would last around 25% longer than previous models but that hasn't exactly gone to plan. Users affected are saying that their iPhones are taking too long to charge and resulting in significant battery charge loss. This could also affect the overall life of the battery and the amount of charge it is capable of holding.

Apple spokesperson Teresa Brewer, gave an official statement:
“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life….We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”

There is only supposed to be a few thousand affected devices but this is a pretty big design flaw so hopefully all those affected will hear about this and get Apple to replace their handset.

KitGuru Says: If there is one thing phone makers shouldn't be getting wrong these days, it's batteries. Unfortunately owning a smartphone usually means having to adjust to very limited battery life and for years we have wanted a company to come out with something that can be truly be considered a ‘daily driver'. We can already cram plenty of power and pixels into our devices but battery life has yet to be drastically improved.
