The post Corsair 110R PC case review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Corsair is well known for its series of high-end gaming PC cases, memory and a huge range of cooling products. The company also produce products aimed at the budget end of the spectrum. Today, we have one of those budget products to examine. The 110R focuses on the savvy gamer looking to save a bit of their hard-earned cash over the high end models on the market today.

Corsair’s 110R case is a compact Mid Tower chassis, available with either a steel side panel variant (110Q) or with a tempered glass side to display components in full view. The 110R’s minimalist design ensures that your system can fit in almost any environment without looking out of place.

Flexible storage options are provided in the Corsair 110R – the case supports up to four storage drives including two 2.5-inch trays and two combo 3.5/2.5-inch removable cages. Additionally, there is a 5.25-inch ODD bay which is often a rarity these days.

Although classed as ‘budget', the corsair 110R can fit a total of four 120mm or two 140mm fans inside the chassis. Corsair claim there is also space for multiple radiators inside the relatively small case. A full-length PSU shroud has been implemented into the design to hide away those unsightly cables.

The 110R also features an acceptable amount of dust filtration so you don’t have to worry about cleaning the internals regularly. There are filters located in the floor, roof and at the front. Also, upfront is an I/O shield featuring USB 3.1 ports and a combined microphone/headphone socket.

While it may not be the most feature-packed case on the market, the 110R does offer exceptional value. With a price of just £54.95, could this be the budget PC case we have all been waiting for? Let's find out.

I thought it would be a good idea to run another mega NEW YEAR competition – and what better way to start the year than to help 4 loyal readers build a new system? Based on feedback we know many KitGuru readers are still rocking 2500k and 2600k systems, so these will help kick start a system upgrade!

While our previous £3,000 PC component competition (HERE) was very popular, many loyal readers of the main KitGuru website were annoyed that it was so intrinsically tied into our Facebook page. Yes, we do understand that not everyone enjoys the social media side of things – so this one is for you!

We have a total of four processors to give away by 10th January 2017 …

processors

… An Intel 6950x, 5960x, 6700k and 6600k.

Missed our reviews of these processors?

Yes, an Intel 6950X, 5960X, 6700k and 6600k CPU up for grabs – so we have not one but four readers with the chance to win one of these mega processors. The competition is open worldwide, and we will cover the cost of shipping – however any custom or import duties are completely your responsibility so check before entering. The processors will be shipped from the United Kingdom, so anyone residing within the European Union will be exempt from any customs charges.

Entering is simple:

Each KitGuru reader has their own opinion when it comes to which graphic cards, processors, chassis etc go into making the perfect rig. With 2 million readers visiting the site every month, 340,000 enthusiasts active in the KitGuru Facebook Community and up to 400,000 of you watching the videos we produce on a constant basis – we know that there is a ‘wisdom of the crowd' effect working away. The KitGuru Annual Reader Awards are the perfect way to express that wisdom.

First, the process of choosing the winners is entirely controlled by you.

Methodology
On 10th October, we opened the nominations and your votes decided which products would be voted for in each category. Voting started at the beginning of November and we received thousands of scores from you over a two week period.

Winners
Those scores have now been compiled, checked and used to discover the KitGuru Reader's Awards 2016 winners. The votes were also pooled with the other members of the European Hardware Association and the EHA Community Awards will be announced in a few hours time.

JUST before we present you with the list of winners for 2016, there's the small matter of the competition we ran alongside the votes. The lucky winner of the Amazon Echo is Taylor Sparks and we'll be dispatching his prize shortly.

Back at CES, MSI impressed us with its new gaming PC known as the Vortex, which uses a similar cylinder shaped design to Apple's 2013 Mac Pro. The Vortex successfully crams a lot of power into a small form factor with a unique thermal design that ensures everything stays cool and quiet.

The Vortex measures in at just ten inches tall and there is a lot to like about this design. Inside of the case are several custom PCBs with enough room for SLI GTX 960s, GTX 970s or even GTX 980s alongside a desktop grade Intel Core i7 6700K, DDR4 RAM and a couple of SSDs.

MSI-Vortex-e1452185739345

MSI-Vortex-View-e1452185810937

The 360° Silent Storm Cooling design is set to offer superior cooling performance as well as low noise, running at just 37 dB under full load and as low as 23 dB at idle speeds, meaning this system won’t be a burden on your ears. On the I/O side you will find four USB 3.1 ports, two HDMI ports, two mini DisplayPort connections as well as USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3. It really is quite an impressive little machine and really shows how far high-performance CPUs and GPUs have come in terms of how much power is required and how much heat they put out.

The final two available configurations come with an Intel Core i7 6700K, 16GB or 32GB of RAM, Super RAID 256GB SSDs with a 1TB HDD and your choice of either SLi GTX 960s or GTX 980s. The GTX 960 model will cost $2200 while the GTX 980 model will set you back $4000.

KitGuru Says: Packing a high-performance gaming PC with two GPUs into that form factor is a true feat of engineering. Sure the systems are expensive, but there is no denying that they are impressive for sure. Hopefully, we will get the opportunity to play with one at some point!

Hitting the mid-high end market hard is the Supermicro C7Z170-SQ. Taking inspiration from the past and adding modern components is sure to rock the competition with server grade components, high-speed M.2 and USB-C 3.1 included.

C7Z170-sq (21)

Perched precariously at £210, the Supermicro C7Z170-SQ looks to be the motherboard that has been thrown unprepared into a market saturated by RGB lights and features that would make NASA technicians quiver at first sight. However, it’s not all about additional utilities, sometimes a great performing unit only needs top quality components derived from servers and that’s what Supermicro is betting on with this addition to the line up.

Unlike a lot of the competition, the feature list is short and safe. Networking is being handled by the Intel I219V and the Realtek ALC1150 codec handles audio. Alongside these, the C7Z170-SQ packs a high-speed M.2 port for the highly popular NVMe SSDs and a USB-C 3.1 port for future functionality.

With a rich heritage, has Supermicro packed enough into the C7Z170-SQ to be considered as a worthy option? Let’s find out.

Features:

  • Up to 64GB DDR4 3000MHz+ support.
  • USB 3.1 Type-C for up to 10GBps data transfer.
  • Single M.2 slot to utilise super faster NVME SSD performance of over 10GB/s.
  • Intel I219V Gigabit networking for fast and consistent networking connection.
  • Realtek ALC 1150 sound codec provides ultra clear audio for all scenarios.
  • Server heritage providing years of experience and the best components.
  • Onboard speaker and DEBUG LED: Simplified audible troubleshooting combined with easy to read codes.

Hot on the heels of the KitGuru Editorial Awards, we have just completed counting on the very first KitGuru Reader Awards! We want to thank the army of readers who took the survey – we very much appreciate the time you spent telling us your favourite products.

Since we launched KitGuru six years ago, we've been paying careful attention to the kind of hardware our audience cares about. With over 316,000 of you telling us what you love/hate over on Facebook, we looked at all of the options and decided to add in a smart spread of categories that should satisfy all of you.

And we added some new options – including sections for wearable technology as well as tablets, VR and more options for motherboards.

Methodology
On 17th November, we explained how the nominations would work, with voting in stages. KitGuru readers chose the nominees – and then voted on the best products in each category. Full details here.

Voting
From 1st December through to 20th December, KitGuru readers racked up votes on the products that they had nominated. Details here.

To make it easier to present the results, we have divided into broad categories like ‘Central Processing' for CPUs and motherboards.

We hope you enjoy reading all about YOUR selections – don't forget to let us know what we should do differently next time over on Facebook!

Traditionally, Acer's reputation was built on cramming as many cool-sounding technologies as possible into a simple chassis with a low price. The global downturn in 2008 caused a rethink at this $11 billion corporation and, since then, there has been a much greater focus on design aesthetics. Last night's launch of the new Predator range of gaming systems showed a clear direction for future models. KitGuru was on hand in a noisy warehouse to get the lowdown from Acer expert Simon Gaines.

Building your own gaming rig let's you fine tune everything, let's you get get the perfect combination of design, power and price. Local system integrators take a lot of the effort out of the process by creating multiple ranges with choice components. But what about your average family?

The number of high street computer specialists has dwindled in recent years, which makes PC World and John Lewis the more likely option. In this environment, Acer is a key player and the launch of its new Predator series shows a willingness to create a gaming brand that transcends formats.

On show in London were desktop, laptop and tablet models, but we also overheard talk about a full range of Predator branded peripherals and even a gaming phone. It looks like the Predator brand will start to take precedent in Acer's gaming marketing going forward.

The Invictus Plaza location that Acer chose for the event had been converted into a club, with pulsing red lights and dry ice everywhere,  which is great for creating a mood, but makes capturing images a little trickier. Hopefully these will give you an idea of just how visually appealing the new products are. We can confirm that they also feel solid to the touch.

Discuss on our Facebook page, over HERE.

KitGuru says: Acer has some G3 models showing online, with prices starting from £650, but from last night's event it seems clear that it is much more interested in selling specifications like the G6-710 which has a Core i7 6700K and GTX980 graphics for £1,499. Once the rest of the line up has launched, it seems likely that Acer will pick up a decent number of sales from mainstream customers who want a high spec system and are prepared to pay a little extra for brand familiarity.

You don't necessarily need an ultra high-end motherboard to achieve a great overclock. The team also managed to hit 1st place in the Cinebench R15 benchmark too.

The 1423 CineBench score was acheived using a Core i7 6700K running at 6.36Ghz using liquid nitrogen cooling. Unfortunately, at the time of this post going live, this particular score has already been beaten. While the CineBench first place rank may have been short lived, the Overclocking Knights still hold the world record with its 6.74 GHz Core i7 6700K overclock. This astonishing frequency was also achieved using liquid nitrogen cooling.

12107906_924196247617053_1410218304357177761_n

These are pretty huge results that will likely impress most overclocking enthusiasts.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Getting a Core i7 to run at that frequency is no easy feat so these results are very impressive indeed. How important is overclocking to you? Does overclocking potential factor in to your motherboard purchases?

Over the last few years, the market for Intel's Core i7 series of mainstream processors has seemed relatively stable in terms of price, with the 3770K, then 4770K and 4790K going for around the £250 mark in the UK at launch. However, with Skylake, things have changed quite a bit and we've noticed, as have some of our keen-eyed readers. In recent weeks, we have been getting messages asking about the Core i7 6700K and its wildly varying price tag.

Back when Skylake first launched, initial retail prices for the 6700K sat between £299.99 and £319.99. However, some places seem to be running low on stock right now (as has been quite common since launch) and prices seem to have rocketed up. For example, Amazon UK has no stock, bar a few third-party registered sellers, which have the processor listed for as high as £409. SCAN in the UK have some stock, though it is priced at £359.00, Aria has stock in for £347.94 and Overclockers UK only has eight 6700K processors in stock, going for £389.99.

We are a UK based site, so we aren't quite as familiar with the US market but it seems that prices have risen across the pond as well. Intel originally announced a recommended price of $350 when the 6700K launched, though Amazon US seem to have them priced at $415, while Newegg has them for $369.99.

It seems that something is going on to inflate prices somewhere along the chain as prices are higher than they have been in years. The Core i7 4790K has been significantly cheaper than the 6700K for most of, if not its entire life cycle. Meanwhile, the enthusiast grade Haswell-E Intel Core i7 5820K has lowered in price and can typically be found for under £299.99 here in the UK, while delivering comparable or better performance.

KitGuru Says: There does appear to be something going on to inflate prices of the 6700K at the moment, which makes the 5820K look like a very attractive option to buyers. Have any of you made the jump to Skylake? How much did you end up paying for your processor?

Eurocom has announced something pretty special this week, the ‘Sky X9' gaming notebook, featuring both a desktop processor and a desktop graphics chip. Nvidia recently announced that it has found a way to bring the full desktop GTX 980 GPU to gaming laptops and several companies have already prepared some models. Now, Eurocom has paired that with an Intel Core i7 6700K processor based on the latest Skylake technology, all packed in to a 17-inch laptop.

The GTX 980 found in the Sky X9 gaming notebook features a fully unlocked core, along with 8GB of GDDR5 memory, which will come in handy for higher resolution tasks, like virtual reality- a big focus for Nvidia with its GTX 980 laptop chips.

On the other side of things we have the unlocked Core i7 6700K, which comes clocked at 4GHz by default, though given that this is a K-series chip, you could theoretically push that even further depending on how well the cooling system works.

In terms of a display, you can either get a 1080p or a 4K panel, there is also room for up to four storage drives, a 2.5w subwoofer, a fingerprint scanner, a USB 3.1 port, a Thunderbolt port and two mini display ports. There is no pricing at the moment, though a laptop of this calibre won't come cheap. Either way, this is certainly a machine worth keeping an eye on.

KitGuru Says: We have seen laptops with desktop class CPUs in the past but we haven't seen a desktop GPU and CPU running in the same 17-inch notebook. It will be interesting to see how this one performs, particularly under gaming load for extended periods.

While Intel's High-End Desktop (HEDT) CPUs are fast and fun, it's on the mainstream platform where the chip manufacturing company really shifts volumes to gamers and DIY enthusiasts. Multiplier-unlocked Core i5 and i7 variants of the latest mainstream micro-architecture are the popularity champions on an annual basis; an affordable platform with good enough gaming and general performance from the CPUs translates into a recipe for success. Intel's latest-and-greatest in desktop CPU technology – Skylake – aims to continue that trend, but this time with a platform that is designed to drive the market forward.

Given that Broadwell was so late and, quite frankly, unpopular on the DIY builder scene, let's compare specifically to the Haswell-based predecessors (which includes Devil's Canyon chips). Skylake offers a process node shrinkage from 22nm to 14nm and sprinkles a new architecture into the pudding. The multiplier-unlocked i5 and i7 Skylake CPUs are still largely similar to their Haswell predecessors, however there should be an IPC improvement if Intel has crunched the numbers correctly.

Skylake-650-2

Intel hit somewhat of a recent sweet spot with last year's Devil's Canyon CPUs. High out-of-the-box clock speeds and consistent overclocking gains, tied in with a feature-healthy platform, made up for the relative disappointment that many people had with the initial hot and hard-work Haswell CPUs. Why is that important to Skylake? Because Intel has applied the same logic to its processor launch party.

But there's a lot more to the current situation than just the newly-released CPUs. Windows 10 has been met with open arms and there's also the promise of better utilisation of CPU horsepower with DirectX 12 once the first few games using the new API trickle to market this fall. SSD cost-per-GB ratios are lower than ever before and the same can be said for DDR4, which is now as closely priced to DDR3 as it has been since last year's inception of the memory technology.

Those factors are critical in driving the keenness of many DIY system builders to upgrade their 3+ year-old platform to something more in line with today's requirements. And that's where Intel is trying to cash-in with Skylake. But to reap the rewards of eager builders, performance has to be enough to tempt users away from their ageing, but possibly still satisfactory, platform.

As a testament to the company's gaming focus, or so Intel suggests, the Skylake launch party consists of a pair of gamers' favourite SKUs. The supporting cast of desktop and high-performance laptop chips are expected to follow in the coming months.

Starting with the flagship Core i7-6700K, Intel dishes out a base frequency of 4.0GHz on all four hyper-threading cores with a maximum boost clock speed of 4.2GHz. That's the same base speed but a 200MHz boost deficit when comparing to the Devil's Canyon 4790K. There's the 8MB of cache that has become commonplace for Intel's mainstream unlocked Core i7 SKUs, and the chip commands a 91W TDP.

Switching focus to the Core i5-6600K, the comparison to last year's Devil's Canyon i5 becomes a lot closer. Base frequency is rated at 3.5GHz across all four cores with a maximum turbo speed of 3.9GHz. Factor in the 6MB of cache and the CPU's three main characteristics are identical to those for the i5-4690K.

With 91W TDPs, the chips' power consumption numbers are up 3W over the Devil's Canyon comparisons even though the process node has been switched to 14nm transistors and maximum clock speed is down by 200MHz for the i7. We asked Intel why this was and the somewhat hesitant indication was that the higher-performance on-chip GPU commands more power.

Dual-channel memory is supported, but this time in DDR3L and DDR4 types. More on that later. There's still the same set of sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes built into the CPU. Skylake processors use an entirely new LGA 1151 socket, making them incompatible with previous generation motherboards. We will explain Intel's mindset on the constant demand for new sockets on the next page.

Retail pricing is almost identical to the Haswell and Devil's Canyon unlocked i5 and i7 SKUs. Expect the i5-6600K to sell for around £190-210 and the i7-6700K for around £290-320.

One of the biggest advancements brought to the table by Skylake is the introduction of DDR4 memory support to the mainstream platforms. Since August 2014, desktop-grade DDR4 has only been useful to consumers who invested in the more expensive X99-based HEDT platform. With the new memory technology being introduced to mainstream desktop platforms, the surge in demand should help to drive prices southwards.

In short, DDR4 has significantly greater operating frequencies than DDR3 but with a penalty of higher latency. The 288-pin DIMMs operate at a lower voltage than is standard for DDR3 (1.20V vs. 1.50V) and support higher capacity chips, such as the 16GB sticks currently available.

Corsair-Vengeance-LPX-DDR4 G_Skill-Ripjaws-V-DDR4

All of the major memory vendors have DDR4 kits available for Skylake's launch. Corsair and G.Skill, for example, have 3200MHz 16GB (4x4GB) kits available, spelling some of the highest-speed sets of memory that we have seen on general sale to date.

Perhaps to ease the upgrade cost to users jumping from an older platform, Skylake CPUs retain support for DDR3 memory in its low voltage – 1.35V – form. Intel and motherboard vendors are keen to push consumers towards DDR4 memory, but we have seen talk of some Z170 motherboards supporting DDR3. We haven't yet had a chance to examine DDR3L memory support for Skylake, but we are told that the 1.35V ceiling is pretty much fixed, so the chosen memory sticks must be able to operate at the lower-than-standard level.

This reminds me of the time when we were all told that 1.65V DDR3 would damage Sandy Bridge processors and 1.50V kits should be purchased. Nothing came of that, and 1.65V DDR3 memory proceeded to function correctly with Sandy Bridge CPUs, so it will be interesting for us to take a closer examination of Skylake's DDR3 support in a future article.

Without hesitation, let's take a closer look at the Skylake processors and the platform features.
