It has been an amazing week in the land of GPU price cuts, with wave after wave of deal lashing the inbox shores of the UK's hard core enthusiasts. Almost all of the action has been coming from NVidia, but now it seems that AMD is ready to get in the ring. KitGuru puts on a Don King wig and steps in front of the cameras.

If memory serves, it was January 31st 2012 when the Radeon HD 7950 from XFX hit the UK stores at around the £375 price point.

With the latest price cut from Aria, that card is now down to just £196.99 and, unlike the launch version, it now comes with 3 games: Tomb Raider 2013, Crysis 3 Hunter and Bioshock Infinite.

The Radeon HD 7950 is a 28nm GPU that packs 4.3 billion transistors into its core and then gets combined with a 3GB GDDR5 – so anyone thinking of upgrading from a previous generation is likely to find plenty of grunt under the bonnet.

In case you're wondering, it is CrossFireX ready, so you have some flexibility if you want to build up a multi-GPU rig.

Some might say that this is a standard ‘end of line, clear your shelves deal' – but the 7950 is very much a current product and Aria has had to source a new shipment to make this deal possible. That would indicate that NEW stock is coming into the market and getting the discount applied. Interesting.

Yesterday, KitGuru carried the news that AMD was making some strong price moves. Naturally, these tend to be in dollars, so it's always nice to see how they translate into local currency before we celebrate too much. Checking the latest postings in their forum, it looks like OcUK were quick off the mark. KitGuru pulls out a calculator to check for ‘reasonability'.

According to our sources in the channel, AMD prepared a significant price move yesterday, which reported exclusively here.

To summarise our report, it looked like the reaction to nVidia's launch of the GTX660 would line up as follows:-

  • 1GB 7850 down $40 to $190
  • 2GB 7850 also drops $40 to $210
  • 2GB 7870 down $50 to $250
  • 3GB 7950 down $30 to $320

We've done a quick calculation based on the available $-to-£ exchange rate with 20% VAT added. On that basis, these cards should be around £165 for the 2GB version of the 7850 with the 2GB 7870 under £200 and the 3GB 7950 around £250.

So, in the 24 hours since KitGuru's announcement, what have Overclockers (OcUK) managed?

KitGuru says: It's good that graphics companies are willing to fight for your hard-earned cash. It's also nice to know that when price cuts are announced, that they are made available in the market almost instantly. We're still a little disappointed that AMD did not move the price down just before the new cards launched from nVidia – but now it's happened, all eyes will be on nVidia's GTX660 price to see if it drops in reaction.

Whether a graphic card wins or loses a benchmark battle is almost entirely down to the price that the manufacturer wants to charge for it.

The actual line up from AMD and nVidia, when placed in a single column based on price, is called the product stack.

KitGuru learns of a move at the top end and renders the new pricing instantly, at HD resolution.

While opinion on the new GTX660 card is mixed in the market (KitGuru loved it while other sites hated it), almost everyone agrees that the performance is strong. The price of the card itself is a little strange though. Roll back to the '60' cards of yesteryear and you find then around the £150-199 mark. Good examples include the 9600 and GTX260. While the GTX460 was in the same kind of zone, the GTX560 actually pushed the bar up to $299. However, nVidia CEO Jen Hsun Huang quickly realised that this was a mistake and the price of the GTX560 began to tumble almost immediately after launch.

With the first GTX660 card successfully through KitGuru Labs at £270, you can already see that the price for entry level 660 cards will land just under £250 (around $300).

Looking ahead, AMD has decided that strong action is needed to balance the two company's product stacks and here are the latest likely street prices:-

  • 1GB 7850 down $40 to $190
  • 2GB 7850 also drops $40 to $210
  • 2GB 7870 down $50 to $250
  • 3GB 7950 down $30 to $320

One of the most interesting parts of this move is that the 3GB version of the 7950 now moves to almost exactly the same price as most of the GTX660 cards.

Given that the 2GB version of the 7950 was slightly edged out in more than half of the tests run by KitGuru Labs, AMD's move seems intended to bring the 660 against the 3GB 7950 where benchmarks scores could be closer.

Overall, this amounts to something like a 10% price drop at the high end and closer to 20% as you drop down a little.

Whatever happens with the final price ‘in store', it's always good to see customers getting more for their money – and healthy competition drives that kind of value.

This move from AMD begs the question, “Will nVidia be forced to match the move?”. If so, it will create a huge amount of paperwork for both sides as their channel customers scramble to qualify for any kind of price protection.

One last point about the channel is that ONLY customers who have bought 100% from authorised distributors etc will get this kind of protection. Bad news for stores who might have chosen a ‘cheaper alternative route' only to find that they are now sitting on stock at the wrong price. Given that most resellers will only make 10% on a graphic card, this kind of price move will wipe out any profit they might have hoped to make.

Frankie says RELAX as Two Tribes Go To War after GTX660 launch

KitGuru says: It's always disappointing to see a company move price just AFTER the benchmarks come through. Razor-sharp marketing would move the price just before the world's press do their testing – to spoil the opposition's launch and help achieve wins for your own product. Could it be that nVidia doesn't send early samples to AMD for testing?

With the nVidia GTX 660 Ti's release imminent, AMD's popular HD 7950 graphics card will soon be the recipient of a clock speed-boosting BIOS update.

The update is intended to better prepare the 6 month old card for the stiff competition that it should receive from nVidia's GeForce GTX 660 Ti.

The speed boost will increase a reference model HD 7950's clock speed from 800MHz to 850MHz. PowerTune with Boost will allow the clock speed to jump up to 925MHz when required.

Everything else on the card remains the same, including the 1250Mhz memory frequency. New cards featuring the improved clock speed will be manufactured from mid-August.

This speed increase will be provided by means of a BIOS update and, as such, is only intended for use with reference cards. Flashing to the new BIOS is also likely to void the warranty offered by partnering board manufacturers.

Naturally, KitGuru has powerful sauces – thick, rich and spicy. But there's always an element of doubt when bringing the best new stories to market. It's possible that your sauce has it wrong, that you mis-heard or you've been lied to [been the subject of a good humoured prank, if you want to be nice – Ed]. When KitGuru brought you the ‘Two tribes go to War' story last week, we could not have got it more right. Read on for juicy details and major savings.

In most cases, the entirety of a web site will update automatically. But sometimes you're lucky and part of it (in this case, promoted offers on Aria.co.uk) actually seem to be coded by hand. As a result, we're able to bring you a single screen grab with all of the price drops in place – on the one page.

Looking at these price drops, they are actually at the limit of what we thought would be possible in our previous story.

Serious drops on these chips mean that you could buy an SSD with the savings. Nice.

KitGuru says: We're still waiting for nVidia's reaction to AMD's lead on price movement. Remember, no move from nVidia indicates supreme confidence from Jen Hsun and co, while a similar 30-50 drop means that the market is tight for everyone.
