Samsung is back with another PCIe 4 SSD – the PM9A1. The latest SSD is aimed at OEMs, but Samsung's specifications suggest that it should offer very similar performance to the pre-existing 980 Pro SSD.

Similar to the 980 Pro, the Samsung PM9A1 uses the Elpis controller, DRAM cache, and V6 NAND memory (3D TLC). Available with up to 2TB of storage, it performs at about the same level as the 980 Pro, reaching speeds of 7,000MB/s in sequential reads and up to 5,200 MB/s in sequential writes. The rated 1,000,000 random 4K read IOPS are the same as the 980 Pro, but rated random 4K write IOPS are slightly inferior, set at 850,000 IOPS.

The PM9A1 SSD does not seem to come with a heat spreader, which is reasonable considering it has been designed to be used by OEMs. However, it features thermal control technology to prevent overheating and increase the drive's lifespan.

Samsung's new client SSD has been qualified by HP for its Z series of workstations, desktops, and laptops, and is already being shipped in these devices. Other OEMs should follow in early Q2. It's unclear if these SSD drives will ever release to the DIY market, but given the fact that the similar 980 Pro SSD is widely available, this seems unlikely.

KitGuru says: If the Samsung PM9A1 were to hit the DIY market, it would probably be cheaper than the 980 Pro. Would you consider Samsung's PM9A1 SSD if it was available at the usual retailers?

Samsung SSDs have always been amongst the most popular, reliable and high-performance. Samsung is looking to keep that track record going with PCIe 4.0, as the company today officially announced the Samsung SSD 980 PRO.

This is an SSD that was previously leaked via the Samsung website, but the official launch is actually this week. The 980 PRO marks Samsung's first attempt at a consumer PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, bringing read/write speeds up to 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s respectively.

Aside from high read/write speeds, the new 980 PRO SSD packs a custom Elpis controller, V-NAND and DRAM, all designed in-house to bring out the best that PCIe 4.0 has to offer. You can also expect random read/write speeds of up to 1,000K IOPS.

As you would expect, all Samsung 980 PRO SSDs come with a heatshield fitted in order to keep the SSD running at peak performance for as long as possible via passive cooling. 1TB, 500GB and 250GB models of these SSDs will be available starting in early October with prices starting at £82.99. A flagship 2TB model is expected to be available before the end of this year.

KitGuru Says: Are many of you looking to upgrade to a PCIe 4.0 SSD in the near future? What do you think of Samsung's latest and greatest?

Samsung is about to launch the successor to the 970 Pro. Available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB  storage capacities, the Samsung 980 Pro will use PCIe Gen4 x4 and NVMe 1.3c interfaces to offer transfer speeds that double what we can expect from PCIe Gen3 SSDs, while also being backwards-compatible with PCIe 3.0 interfaces.

Samsung accidentally went live early with a listing and full specifications for the 980 Pro NVMe SSD last night. The proper page (link) has since been taken down at the time of publishing. However, the folks at Guru3D got a good look at the contents beforehand, bringing a full breakdown of features and specifications.

With sequential read speeds of up to 7000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 5000MB/s, the Samsung 980 Pro can reach up to 1M random read/write IOPS (4K, QD32). The standard M.2 2280 form factor allows you to easily mount the SSD in desktops and laptops, offering a versatile storage solution for different workloads.

Ideally used in “heavy-duty applications”, the Samsung 980 Pro uses a unique cooling system to ensure stable performance for long periods. The SSD's controller is nickel coated to offer superior heat transfer, and the NAND chip has a dedicated heat spreader to reduce its temperatures. Additionally, this SSD features “Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology” to automatically control its temperature, increasing the durability and performance during its lifespan.

With a rated MTBF of 1.5M hours, the Samsung 980 Pro supports AES 256-bit encryption, Garbage collection, TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. You can also use Samsung Magician software to monitor the SSD's health, protect your data, optimise the SDD's performance, and ensure that you receive all the latest firmware updates for your drive.

Pricing and availability have not been shared yet, but we should get those details once Samsung is ready to unveil this SSD properly. One thing we do already know is that the Samsung 980 Pro SSD will be backed by a 5-year warranty or 600TBW warranty

KitGuru says: Have you ever owned a Samsung SSD? Would you like to get your hands on a 980 Pro?
