AMD's new AM4 platform is fresh on the market but the overall investment cost is still high with the current crop of Ryzen 7 CPUs starting at more than £300. What if you have an AMD FX-series processor that you are happy with and simply want a new motherboard with a more up-to-date feature set?

Maybe your current AM3+ motherboard is on its last legs and you simply want a drop-in replacement rather than a new processor, memory, and cooling hardware. We look at ASUS' TUF Sabertooth 990FX R3.0 to see if it's still a worthy option for AM3+ buyers.

Notable features for the ASUS TUF Sabertooth 990FX R3.0 include AURA RGB support, a PCIe-capable M.2 connector, and 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2. All three of those inclusions show the updated nature of ASUS' motherboard as none of them was available at the launch of AMD's 990FX chipset.

Focussing on the more influential factors for buyers with power-hungry FX chips, ASUS deploys an 8+2-phase VRM that is built with digital control and ‘TUF‘ components.

Features (taken from the ASUS product page):

  • Aura RGB lighting – full RGB control with a variety of exciting presets for its on-board LED illumination
  • Digital gunmetal-gray camouflage PCB and Q-LED indicators
  • SafeSlot – Reinvented, strengthened PCIe slot utilizes a new insert-molding process for superior retention and shearing resistance.
  • USB 3.1 onboard – three Type-A port plus a reversible Type-C port
  • TUF Components – [TUF Alloy Chokes, TUF Caps & MOSFETs; Certified by Military-standard]

Today we are looking at the latest motherboard from Sapphire to support AMD's new FX family of processors, with backwards compatibility for the previous generation AM3 CPUs. The Sapphire Pure Black 990FX is a full sized ATX board targeting the high end AMD enthusiast audience. This is also the first board from the company to feature the latest QBIOS, an easy to use Dual UEFI bios with comprehensive support for overclocking.

Sapphire may not be the first name to jump to mind when considering a new motherboard, but we have had some great experiences with their products in the past. They have always proven to be rock solid with a full feature set, even if the price tags have often been firmly targeted towards the ‘premium sector'.

Sapphire claim that “The build quality of the SAPPHIRE Pure Black 990FX is high.  It has a black multilayer PCB, and uses high quality gold plated connectors for USB 3.0 and LAN. It incorporates many of the high end features associated with the SAPPHIRE brand, such as the use of high reliability solid capacitors throughout. The multi-phase PWM voltage regulation circuitry for both the CPU and memory modules incorporate the SAPPHIRE Diamond Black chokes with coolers that have featured on SAPPHIRE’s high end graphics cards. Low profile coolers on the PWM section give users a wide choice of CPU cooler without risk of obstruction.”

Let us take a closer look ….

With Bulldozer on the horizon, now is a great time to think about upgrading to a 990FX motherboard.  We have looked at a number of different offerings from the likes of Gigabyte and Asus, including the awesome Crosshair V Formula which sits at the top of Asus' range.

Today we are going to look at ASRock's flagship 990FX motherboard, the Fatal1ty 990FX Professional, which boasts a feature set to rival the Crosshair V Formula.  It also uses a very similar red and black colour scheme that is sure to appeal to many enthusiast users.  Some of the most prominent features are USB3.0 support and SATA-600 support across all six internal SATA connections.

The 990FX chipset is backwards compatible with all AMD's current Athlon and Phenom processors so you can prepare your system for Bulldozer now.  This means you can spread out the cost of the upgrade as you don't need to buy the CPU and motherboard at the same time.

The Sapphire stand was buzzing yesterday and we managed to get some shots of the Sapphire Pure Black 990FX-N motherboard which looks to continue Sapphire's excellent series of Pure Black products. Kitguru has already reviewed the Pure Black boards for both P67 and X58 platforms, so we are looking forward to seeing the new AMD Pure Black product in action.

As would be expected it is CrossfireX capable and supports up to 7 graphics cards. One of the pictures below lists the full specifications. Things will of course heat up when AMD launch their new series of 8 core processors.

KitGuru says: A very capable looking product from the Sapphire team.

Today AMD are launching their new 990FX chipset motherboards and we are looking at the Asus Sabertooth model which is a board loaded with a plethora of features. The Ultimate Force (TUF) Sabertooth 990FX has a 10 phase Digi+ VRM and it is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots which support dual channel DDR3 1866mhz. This connects to the 990FX chipset across a HyperTransport 3.1 link.

No one will argue that Asus make some of the finest motherboards on the market. Their Republic Of Gamers (ROG) and Asus Crosshair V Formula motherboards have won many awards across the globe. My personal favourite right now is the Asus Rampage III Black Edition X58, which scored a staggering 9.5/10 when it was reviewed on Kitguru in March.

The Asus Sabertooth 990FX also supports both Quad GPU SLI and Quad CPU CrossfireX. Is this one of the best AMD based gaming motherboards on the market? On paper it certainly looks like it.
