Last week, we reported on a bunch of new details surrounding Ubisoft’s previously-announced Assassin’s Creed Infinity platform. More has since been revealed, with insiders claiming these titles will utilise an evolved version of its ‘Anvil’ engine.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, the next phase of Assassin’s Creed titles will all be folded into Ubisoft’s upcoming AC: Infinity game hub. Kicking off this new era will be Assassin’s Creed Red – the long desired Feudal Japan entry which is said to be coming some time this year.

According to the report, AC: Red will be the first title utilise an evolved version of the series’ Anvil Engine. Named the ‘Anvil Pipeline’, this new iteration of the engine is said to help all the various AC studios around the world “to work from one unified branch, rather than having different versions and branches.”

As claimed by Insider-Gaming, one of the benefits of this new engine is that it will allow for ray-traced global illumination and virtual geometry – the former of which will likely have a substantive impact on graphical fidelity and realism.

Another benefit to this new engine is that it required a complete overhaul of many of the series’ systems, including “animations, its parkour system, dynamic weather, and more” – meaning players should notice many changes and improvements across the board.

Other aspects of AC: Red which have been tweaked include combat and stealth. Though perhaps not quite as revolutionary as the engine changes, these two primary aspects of the series have been enhanced. Combat is said to be somewhat similar to AC: Valhalla, but with “a lot more gore, including blood, and decapitations.”

Stealth has seen more notable gameplay improvements, with players being able to “extinguish torches, hide in tall grass and bushes, and even go prone whenever they please.”

2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins marked the next step in the AC formula, and based on what has been shared so far, it seems as though AC: Red will be its successor in that regard. Hopefully the revamped engine makes for a significantly enhanced experience. We won’t have to wait long to find out.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the details so far? Are you more or less excited for AC: Red? Will this truly be the third chapter in Assassin’s Creed’s evolution? Let us know your thoughts down below.

While perhaps not the entirely successful return to roots that OG Assassin’s Creed fans were hoping for, AC Mirage represents the biggest step in the right direction we have seen for years. Soon, the game will be getting even better, with an upcoming patch set to add a new game plus mode as well as a permadeath difficulty option.

Announcing the update on Twitter, the Assassin’s Creed team said “We hear you: New Game + mode for Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available in a free update this December. And for the expert Assassins, along with NG+ will come an optional permadeath mode also available across all difficulties! More details to come soon.”

As explained by CD Projekt Red back in 2022 when fans were asking for a NG+ mode to come to Cyberpunk 2077, “NG+ for CP2077 is an incredibly complex feature to make. It's rebalancing the entire game (enemies, equipment, items) and tons of testing/tweaking; there's many skill checks in gameplay and dialogues, what happens here? How'd we handle/balance attribute + perk points.”

While obviously not a 1:1 comparison, it is encouraging to see Assassin’s Creed Mirage get a feature which isn’t always a guarantee nowadays. Likewise, the permadeath mode is a welcome addition for those who enjoy torturing themselves.

Released all the way back in 2013, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag holds a special place in many AC fans’ hearts, with some deeming it to have been the best entry in the entire franchise. As the game now reaches its 10th anniversary, Ubisoft has revealed that Black Flag has been experienced by over 34 million players.

Taking to Twitter to honour its birthday, Ubisoft released updated statistics on just how many people experienced this much-loved entry, saying:

“Today, we're celebrating the 10th anniversary of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag! Over 34 million pirates have embarked on this unforgettable adventure through the Caribbean. Thank you for taking this journey with us! What is your favorite memory from the game?”

As mentioned, there are many who would deem Black Flag to be the best entry in the entire Assassin’s Creed series. At the very least, it is hard to not to argue that the game represents one of the strongest examples of classic open-world AC design principles – boosted by the fact that it was the first entry to be developed for the PS4 and Xbox One generation.

This fondness for Black flag is exacerbated by the fact that its follow-up – 2014’s AC Unity – was a bug-ridden mess at launch, and contributed to the notion that the AC series was beginning to get stale (which Ubisoft then remedied a few years later with Origins and its more RPG-like approach).

With Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag officially a decade old, it is high time that the game receives some sort of remaster – a sentiment mirrored by many fans. It will be interesting to see if Ubisoft has any such plan in the works.

Over the years we have seen the Assassin’s Creed franchise balloon from a small-scope stealth title to an open-world RPG with literally hundreds of hours of content. With this great shift however we have seen some fans move away from the series. For those yearning to return to the roots of Assassin’s Creed the upcoming AC: Mirage will be much closer to the classic Assassin’s Creed games lengthwise.

As shared by the Assassin’s Creed focused channel ‘Access the Animus’, French YouTuber Julien Chieze interviewed the lead producer for the upcoming AC Mirage – Fabian Salamon. As part of this, Salamon was asked about how long it would take to complete the game. While earlier AC titles could be finished in a couple dozen hours or so, the shift to a more open-world RPG-like system with Assassin’s Creed Origins and beyond has seen gametime balloon to well over 100 hours on average.

Fortunately, Mirage will not be such a daunting experience, with the Lead Producer revealing that based on recent playtests an average playthrough of Assassin’s Creed Mirage will take roughly 20-24 hours. While already encouraging in its own right, perhaps the most important revelation was the fact that a completionist run of the upcoming stealth title will take a maximum of around 30 hours.

With AC: Mirage, it is quite clear that Ubisoft have listened to fans and are not only making the main story a much more palatable experience, but have also scaled back the many side quests and random collectibles required for a 100% completionist playthrough. It will be highly interesting to see how fans ultimately feel about Assassin’s Creed Mirage when the game comes out on the 12th of October.

Assassin’s Creed is by far one of Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, with the publisher having released a total of 12 mainline titles, 17 spin-offs and a bunch of other transmedia titles since the series’ inception back in 2007. Ubisoft has already announced 6 AC games which are currently in development – but according to reports there are in fact 11 titles in the works.

As reported by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft currently has 11 Assassin’s Creed titles in development. Some of the games in question have already been announced, namely:

  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage [Single-player] (in-production) – October 12, 2023
  • Assassin’s Creed Nexus [VR] (in-production) – 2023
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade [Mobile] (in-production) – Expected 2023
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Red [Single-player] (in-production) – Sources Suggest 2024
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe [Single-player] (pre-production) – Expected 2025/2026
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Invictus [Multiplayer] (pre-production) – Expected 2025/2026

Alongside these half a dozen titles, Ubisoft are said to be working on 5 other additional AC games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Nebula [Single-player] (concept/prototype)
    • Will feature 3 different settings: India, Aztec Empire, and Mediterranean
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Raid [Multiplayer] (concept/prototype)
    • Free-to-Play 4-person co-op PvE experience featuring past characters
  • Assassin’s Creed Codename Echoes [Multiplayer] (concept/prototype)
    • Multiplayer title using Ubisoft’s Scalar (cloud) technology
  • Assassin’s Creed Nexus 2 [VR] (being discussed internally)
  • Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake [Single-player] (just greenlit)

In previous years the Assassin’s Creed franchise suffered from fatigue due to there being too many releases too often. Fortunately, we have moved away from this issue – or at least we had. It will be interesting to see how fans react to the upcoming bombardment of Assassin’s Creed games.

Ubisoft has had an interesting relationship with Steam. In the past many months we have seen Ubisoft commit itself to bringing its previously Epic Games Store exclusive titles to Steam with the likes of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Roller Champions, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game and more added to the storefront slowly but surely. In the wake of the recently announced Ubisoft Connect revamp, Assassin’s Creed Revelations has been delisted from Steam.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘dex3108’ the Steam page for Assassin’s Creed Revelations has added a new notice which says “Assassin’s Creed Revelations is no longer available on the Steam Store”. Interestingly, all the DLC for the game is still available to purchase.

After spending years away from Steam, Ubisoft began to finally bring its back catalogue of titles to the platform. As such, it is odd to see that games are once again being removed. Of course, it is worth noting that this could be a simple error, or the game could be set to be relisted soon, but without explicit explanation from Ubisoft all we can do is speculate.

As mentioned, Ubisoft recently announced that they are revamping their own PC client, and so perhaps the removal of older Ubisoft titles has something to do with it? Hopefully not.

After years away from the platform, Ubisoft announced last year that it would begin to bring its published titles back to the Steam PC platform. Since then, we have seen the likes of Roller Champions; ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World – the video game’ and pretty much all other missing titles find their way onto Steam. That said, in a surprising move, it seems as though the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage may not be coming to Steam after all.

Following the official gameplay trailer released during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase, Ubisoft updated its Assassin’s Creed Mirage website, adding new details including the list of platforms which the game is said to be coming to.

According to Ubisoft’s site, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will release on PlayStation 5; PS4; Xbox Series X|S; Xbox One; Ubisoft Connect; Amazon Luna and Epic Games. Notably, there is no mention of Steam anywhere, suggesting that as with all of its previous releases in recent years, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will spend at least some time exclusive to the Epic Games Store (and Ubisoft Connect) on PC.

It would be odd for Ubisoft to once again make a title exclusive, especially after announcing their return to Steam mere months ago. Hopefully the absence of Steam is simply a mistake, and that AC: Mirage launches day-and-date on Steam. We will have to wait and see.

Ubisoft has been going all-in on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, with the publisher having announced half a dozen games or so currently in development. One of the most interesting titles is AC: Codename Red. Set in Feudal Japan, a new report has claimed that the game will offer multiple playstyles, letting you take control of both a samurai and shinobi.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, which was previously claimed to offer two playable characters, has now had more details released – with the publication stating that the two characters in question will be a Samurai and a Shinobi.

According to the report, the character teased by Ubisoft during the game’s initial announcement is in fact the female samurai, with the second playable character said to be an African refugee who learned the way of the Creed, becoming a shinobi.

Keeping in line with these characters, Codename Red will reportedly focus heavily on stealth mechanics, bringing the series back to its roots and then going even beyond that – with Insider-Gaming comparing gameplay to the likes of Splinter Cell and Hitman (“hiding bodies, hiding in tall grass, extinguishing lights so your shadows are not spotted etc”).

With so many Assassin’s Creed titles currently in development there were fears that the already saturated series could become even more so. That said, if each game chooses to take its own unique spin on the franchise – such as what we are seeing with Codename Red – then hopefully Ubisoft will be able to avoid such issues. We will have to wait and see.

Over the years we have seen the Assassin’s Creed franchise balloon from a small-scope stealth title to an open-world RPG with literally hundreds of hours of content. With this great shift however we have seen some fans move away from the series. For those yearning to return to the roots of Assassin’s Creed, the upcoming AC: Mirage looks to have you covered.

As reported by GamesRadar, Ubisoft is taking a break from the 100+ hour long open-world sandbox RPG Assassin’s Creed titles which we have seen since the release of Origins in 2017, instead opting for a more intimate experience closer to that of the earlier titles, with creative director Stéphane Boudon saying:

“Mirage’s creation has been the convergence of several inputs. Of course, the first one comes from our community: Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla they are all great games with the promise to live an epic journey in a strong fantasy. Their scopes have been calibrated to fulfill those ambitions as they all embrace the RPG mechanics. But amongst our fans, we started hearing the desire for a character driven story, focused on the core pillars of the first ACs in a more intimate scale. It resonates with us as well as developers and this was the starting point of the project.”

That said, despite the somewhat smaller scope, AC: Mirage will reportedly take full advantage of modern gaming hardware, with Boudon explaining, “The increased hardware power and the extended expertise we developed also allow us to have a richer and denser map compared to the first ACs, and it means for us more gameplay opportunities, more interactions between systems, more depth. It also means incredible and immersive details to treat Baghdad as one of the main characters of Mirage.”

While the change in gameplay introduced with AC: Origins were well-appreciated at the time, AC: Valhalla has proven that fans are beginning to tire of the current formula, and so hopefully Mirage is the boost the series has needed.

Xbox Game Pass features hundreds of games available to play by all those who pay the service’s monthly fee. One publisher which has shown support for Game Pass is Ubisoft – with the Polish Xbox store now suggesting that the latest Assassin’s Creed Valhalla might be set to join the service.

As discovered by the Polish website xgp.pl, said country’s Xbox Store currently lists Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as being available through Xbox Game Pass – heavily suggesting that the game will be officially announced for the service soon.

As mentioned, Ubisoft has had a healthy relationship with Game Pass, with the service featuring a plethora of Ubi titles, including Assassin’s Creed Origins; Rainbow Six: Siege and Extractions as well as Far Cry 5 – to name but a few. It would therefore be unsurprising to see AC Valhalla added to Game Pass, especially as they did just that with PlayStation Plus Extra.

It is worth noting however that the Xbox Store has in the past flagged a few false positives when it comes to games joining the service. That being said, Ubisoft has played nicely with all major and minor platforms for years, and so it would not be surprising to see an official announcement soon.

On the 10th of September, Ubisoft will be going live with its ‘Ubisoft Forward’ games showcase, where the publisher has confirmed it will include “a special Assassin's Creed showcase offering a peek at the future of the franchise”. It was already known that the recently announced Assassin’s Creed Mirage would be at the event, but according to insiders, we might actually see four new AC games announced.

Ahead of the Ubisoft Forward showcase, known industry insider Tom Henderson (via tryhardguides) reported that on top of our first proper look at the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage (set in Baghdad), the publisher will be announcing a number of other Assassin Creed projects at the event.

While AC Mirage will be a standalone title, two of the other projects – dubbed Project Red and Project Hexe/Neo – are said to be part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity: The franchise’s first foray into live-service experiences.

According to Henderson, Project Red is said to take place in Japan – a long requested location for the AC franchise to delve into. The game will seemingly be set during the samurai era, with players likely being able to select either a female or male assassin (though Henderson himself only saw concept art featuring a female assassin).

Project Hexe (formerly known as Project Neo) will reportedly be the darkest Assassin’s Creed game yet, with the title set “during the witch hunt era in 16th century Europe”. Project Hexe is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the studio responsible for the original Assassin’s Creed as well as AC II; Brotherhood; Revelations; Black Flag and Valhalla – to name just a few.

The final Assassin’s Creed title ‘confirmed’ to be at the event is Project Jade: a mobile title which will be set in China.

With so many Assassin's Creed titles set to be announced at the Ubisoft Forward event on the 10th of September, it will be interesting to see how the publisher positions these games, especially as the AC franchise is known for its evolutionary – not revolutionary – approach to game design. We don’t have too much longer to wait in order to find out.

While digital gaming brought with it many conveniences, it also puts your full library into the hands of the storefront – meaning you never truly own your games. The downsides to such a thing can be seen with Ubisoft’s treatment of its games – as the single player Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD will soon no longer be playable even if you own the game.

As discovered by Twitter user ‘Nors3‘, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is no longer available for purchase on Steam, with the store page stating that “at the request of the publisher, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is no longer available for sale on Steam.”

Removing older titles from sale on a digital storefront is not uncommon, however the reasoning is typically due to licensing issues or online server costs – things which AC Liberation HD should not suffer with.

Even more troubling however is the fact that from the 1st of September 2022, the game will no longer be playable even by those who previously purchased the game – despite it being a single player experience.

To add insult to injury, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD was recently available as part of the Steam Summer sale, meaning that for some owners, they will never even get the chance to play the game they so recently purchased. Hopefully the publisher explains this decision sooner rather than later.

A few weeks back we heard rumors that Ubisoft may be giving Assassin's Creed a break this year, with no main installation to the series set to release this year. Now this move has been confirmed but Ubisoft isn't just pushing back the next Assassin's Creed game, it is also re-examining the whole franchise and so we may see some changes to the way the series is handled in the future.

Writing in a blog post today, Ubisoft said: “This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.”

The next Assassin's Creed game will launch in 2017 and will be based in Egypt. According to earlier rumors, the game will be going for more of an open-world ‘Witcher' feel so we could end up seeing a very different game compared to past entries in the series.

We still don't know when next year's Assassin's Creed will launch, perhaps Ubisoft will keep it in development until holiday season next year, or perhaps Assassin's Creed will now be a Summer franchise, either way, we should find out more later on in the year.

KitGuru Says: Assassin's Creed was in need of a good shake-up. While I did enjoy Syndicate, it was still a pretty standard AC game with familiar gameplay and mechanics. Hopefully, when the franchise returns next year, it will introduce some big changes. Do you guys think Ubisoft is doing the right thing by skipping 2016?

We were impressed by the TP-Link AV500 powerline networking kit which we reviewed recently, and TP-Link have supplied us with a slightly different variant of this to test which acts as a wireless range extender.  It will be interesting to see how well this improves range and enhances transfer rates at long distances when paired with the Archer C9.

Ubisoft's upcoming AAA titles Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Crew won't be available on Steam in the UK when they launch over the next few weeks. The reasoning for this isn't exactly clear, with Ubisoft simply stating that gamers in the UK will be able to buy the titles from shops and other online digital retailers.

It could be something to do with the pricing of the games, which have been raised beyond the usual to £49.99 on the uPlay store, though all of them will be available on Steam elsewhere around the world. Similarly other retailers in the UK have the games priced the same without a problem.

acunity
Past Assassin's aren't happy with their bargain prices, but do you see them complaining?

This is however still a much higher price than you usually see on Steam. At most, games are released with a £39.99 price tag, but it's only usually special editions or collections that reach beyond that.

When asked for comment by PCGamesN, Ubisoft responded: “We’ve been in discussions with Valve about Assassin’s Creed Unity but for the time being the game is not available via Steam in the UK. In the meantime, UK customers wishing to purchase the game digitally can do so by visiting the Uplay store, our retail partners or other digital distributors.”

If it was indeed Ubisoft's decision to pull the game from Steam, rather than Valve banning it due to price (which seems unlikely) it is possible that the publisher has done a deal with a UK retailer like GAME, in order to not make it available on the main digital distribution platform in the world and therefore drive sales to the high street, but that seems like a risky move.

KitGuru Says: Why do you guys think Ubisoft's upcoming games aren't coming to Steam? It seems like it's already going to lose out on sales due to that high price tag – even if it's actually not that bad, we all paid £50 for N64 carts back in the day.

Today we are going to take a look at one of the latest wireless networking products from Asus – the RP-AC52 Dual Band Wireless AC750 Range Extender. This product is designed to alleviate wireless range issues that may occur in large houses, or those with thick walls.

Asus are not best known for their networking products but we have looked at a few different models from them over the past few years and have been generally impressed with what they have to offer.

Despite being marketed as a range extender, the RP-AC52 has a number of other features to sweeten the deal.  It can also operate as a wireless access point, and also supports wireless audio streaming.

EXTENDER

Features:

  • 802.11ac concurrent dual-band wireless range extender with speeds up to 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) and 433 Mbps (5 GHz).

  • Automatic switching between range extender and access point modes.
  • Streaming music with ASUS AiPlayer app and multiple wireless streaming protocols.

If you thought Watchdogs' pre-release sales were ridiculous, with its countless versions and pre-order bonsues, clearly Ubisoft didn't see things the same way, as it's taken pre-release extras to a whole new level with Assassin's Creed Unity: a weekly lottery where you can win real prizes, but only if you've pre-ordered.

That's right every Friday Ubisoft will be offering up a number of prizes ranging from in-game DLC, to real world swag and full on holidays across the world to Canada and France. Everyone gets one free spin (which most of the time it seems, you win a free in-game item, prompting you to set up a Unity account to claim it) and if you've pre-ordered the game, you get five more every week.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BATKaNOe9s0′]

This is all despite the fact that Assassin's Creed Unity isn't set to be released until 28th October this year. While I'm sure you don' t need it pointing out, that's over four months away.

Ubisoft is making a big push to get you to pre-order this game and give it your money now, which makes you wonder how confident the company could be in the game itself. Chances are this is just a massive marketing budget trying to find some other way to justify itself, but it's quite eerie. There was not a single mention of gameplay in that entire video. It was all about winning headsets, or bags or trips to France, none of which will contribute in the slightest to how good the game is.

unityspin
Quick caveat also, it's open to those in the US only.

However, Ubisoft hasn't removed itself from the ‘traditional' pre-order system entirely. Paying for the game before release will also get you the unique mission pack, Chemical Revolutions. You're also able to get other bonuses specific to certain retailers depending on which you pre-order through.

For more information, including the extensive rules and your own free spin, head here.

KitGuru Says: Pre-orders alone are becoming a bit of a dangerous trend, as they encourage developers to produce better trailers and pre-scripted gameplay sequences, rather than an engaging experience. It becomes more about the marketing, rather than the gameplay. But this even throws an addictive habit like gambling into the mix. Anyone for some crack with their next pre-order?

Routers are the life and soul of the media party in many modern households. They are also under an ever increasing demand to deliver high definition media content to multiple devices simultaneously. If you've always thought to yourself, “man, I like these Assassin's Creed games, but that Ezio sure is a snappy dresser – I wish I could buy clothes like that,” then you're one of the few people who wants to wear an off-white, hooded, open collar shirt. However if you just liked the idea of a hood with a few symbols representing your love of the AC series, you're now in luck, as Ubisoft and Musterbrand have released a new line of Assassin's Creed clothing.

Prices are expectantly high, with the cheapest items being £23 tee shirts, emblazoned with logos from the game and lead character in the upcoming AC III game, Connor, about to make a kill. Homaging the hooded characters from each of the series' games, there's a couple of hoodies available too, though only one features anything to do with the Assassin's Creed universe – and even then it's just a couple of symbols from the series.

Assassin's Creed Clothing
Want to dress like Ezio? In a cardigan? Well now you can.

One item that stands out as being an odd choice, is an ottoman long sleeved cardigan – one item I never thought I'd hear associated with games about stealthily killing people. That one gets a bit more expensive at £47, but if you go right up to the top end, there's a couple of coats/jackets that will set you back between £80 and £160. Again, their only connection with Ezio or any other Assassin's is that they feature a couple of AC symbols in specific places.

KitGuru Says: I can guarantee none of it actually looks as cool as the guys posing on the homepage. And why does the guy on the right need two hoodies?
