Following the overwhelming success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo quickly greenlit an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Though the film is set to be live-action, the project’s director has expressed his hopes to “fulfil people’s greatest desires” with the project.

We have seen nothing from the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda film since its announcement. That said, the project’s director ‘Wes Ball’ has spoken on the project a number of times.

In the latest issue of Total Film magazine (as part of GamesRadar), Wes Ball claimed to have some pretty big ambitions for the film, saying “I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfil people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

He continued, “That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”

In a previous interview, Ball stated that “My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will.”

Clearly, Wes Ball is passionate about the project, and so hopefully the Zelda film winds up being both a commercial and critical success. It’ll be interesting to see how the live action element gels with fans.

Films based on popular video game IPs have become the new hotness in Hollywood, with the likes of Sonic, Mario and Uncharted all having been adapted for the silver screen in recent years – with many more in development. Adding on to the list of adaptations is Ubisoft, with a Watch Dogs film officially announced to be on its way.

In an exclusive report by Deadline, the publication revealed that Ubisoft and entertainment company New Regency have partnered up to produce a film based on the publisher’s semi-popular Watch Dogs franchise.

Set to be directed by Mathieu Turi and starring Sophie Wilde, no plot details have been shared – though expect it at the very least to heavily incorporate various aspects from the series’ 3 entries (aka. hacking, corruption and near futurism).

With each of the three Watch Dogs games being set in different locations and starring different characters/factions, it will be interesting to see what direction the film winds up taking.

Regardless, the concepts surrounding the Watch Dogs series could certainly work well in a movie-like medium and so we will have to wait and see how it turns out.

Until Dawn was a PlayStation 4 exclusive choice-based narrative title developed by Supermassive Games back in 2015. Though the game was a modest success, neither Sony nor Supermassive have returned to the property since…until now. Almost a decade after its initial release, Until Dawn is set to get a film adaptation.

As announced by The Hollywood Reporter, notable horror director David F. Sandberg is set to direct a film adaptation of Until Dawn. For the uninitiated, while he might be known now for his work on the two Shazam! films, Sandberg started his career in the industry directing horror titles – most notably the viral short film Lights Out (which he then turned into a full feature).

Little is known about the adaptation currently, except for the fact that it will reportedly be “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast”. Speaking of the cast, Until Dawn’s entire cast consisted of known film and TV actors, with their likenesses being represented accurately in the game.

Considering the fact that it is now being adapted into a film, it’ll be curious to see whether any of the actors end up reprising their roles – or if Sony is wanting to keep the two separate. We will have to wait and see.

Late last year we reported that a film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding was in the works – though very few specifics were shared at the time. While the project still remains a relative mystery, Kojima has now announced a surprising partnership.

In a press release published to their website, Kojima Productions announced that they have secured a partnership for the Death Stranding film, saying “A24, the studio behind Academy Award winning films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once has announced a collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS to adapt Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game, DEATH STRANDING, into a live-action feature film.”

Speaking on this partnership, Kojima himself said “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together.”

Kojima continued, “There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

As a massive fan of the Death Stranding game, it will be highly interesting to see how this project proceeds – and just how different the final product will be from the game.

Following the overwhelming success of The Super Mario Bros Movie, it did not come as a surprise to see that a Zelda adaptation was greenlit shortly after. Despite being a live-action project, the film’s director has compared his ambitions for the Zelda movie to the works of Studio Ghibli, being a “live-action Miyazaki.”

In an interview conducted by Entertainment Weekly, the director for the upcoming Zelda adaptation – Wes Ball – spoke on what he hopes to achieve with the film, calling it “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I've always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

Discussing the movie further, Ball continued, “It’s going to be awesome. My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special.”

It is worth noting that the adaptation is still very early in the works, with the director currently involved in the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Once that is concluded however, the plan is “to have a little bit of a rest for a moment, and then dive into [Zelda] and hopefully give fans what they’re hoping for, and also invite new people in.”

With how successful the animated Mario Movie ended up being, it is somewhat surprising to see that they are going with a live action adaptation for Zelda. It will be interesting to see how this is ultimately translated – and whether Link will actually speak in the film.

In 2016 Bloober Team released Layers of Fear, a psychological horror game which helped put the Polish video game studio on the map. Since then, the team have worked on all manner of games, from a sequel (Layers of Fear 2) to a licensed game (Blair Witch) to a brand new IP (The Medium). That said, Layers of Fear has become the studio’s bread and butter, and so it comes as little surprise to see that the team is teasing a new project in the Layers of Fear universe.

Taking to Twitter to tease this upcoming project, Bloober Team said “We have prepared something special for you, and it's time to reveal the first ‘layer’ of our secret. More news to follow soon… Unless you can guess what's coming.”

Based on the wording of the Tweet, it is quite clear that Bloober Team is referring to a project related to the Layers of Fear franchise. That said, considering the fact that a new entry in the series arrived just a few months ago, this tease is unlikely to be related to a new game.

What this teaser could be referring to is the long-in-development Layers of Fear film, which was first announced all the way back in early 2020. At the time of its announcement, the project was already said to have been in the works for two years, and so it is high time that we got some sort of update on this film adaptation.

Of course, we will have to wait patiently for more details regarding what exactly this Layers of Fear project is, but luckily it seems as though we won’t have to wait too long for more official details, with Bloober Team promising “more news to follow soon…”

We'd be doing an injustice if we ignored the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the renewed life it brought to Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red's redemption arc is now complete, with the final major updates shipping for Cyberpunk 2077, as well as a major expansion. We won't have to wait for Cyberpunk 2 to get more of Night City though, as CD Projekt Red has now confirmed plans for a live action adaptation.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners did very well, taking full advantage of the animation medium and using it to tell a more personal story set in Night City. Now, CD Projekt Red is teaming up with production company, Anonymous Content, to produce a live-action Cyberpunk project.

Anonymous Content has worked on shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot, as well as on Hollywood films like The Revenant. The live-action Cyberpunk adaptation is currently in early development and is in need of a screen writer and other roles.

We don't know exactly when this project will come to fruition but we imagine we'll get to see this well before CD Projekt's Cyberpunk sequel is ready.

One of the more unique titles to release last year was Stray, a game which has you play as a cat in a futuristic cyberpunk robot world. Already a rather cinematic experience, it has now been announced that an animated film adaptation of the breakout indie hit is in development.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Annapurna Animation is currently working on a film adaptation of 2022’s cyberpunk cat game Stray. Speaking to EW on this upcoming feature, Annapurna Animation lead Robert Baird said:

“This is a game that's all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It's a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there's such a hilarious dynamic. So, there's comedy inherent in this, but there's not one human being in this movie.”

They continued, “I think it's one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat. How did they pull that off, and how are we going to pull that off in the movie? We will, even though sometimes it feels impossible, but we know that's the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.”

Stray was lauded for its ability to make players connect with the game’s protagonist despite being a mute, lifelike cat. It will be interesting to see how the folks at Annapurna Animation are able to translate this feeling to a more passive medium such as films and animation.

For years now we have heard talks of Destiny being adapted into different mediums including film and TV. Recently, this was further affirmed by the announcement that a former Warner Bros. executive has been hired in the role of ‘Senior Producer for Destiny Linear Media’. Now, thanks to a new survey sent out by Bungie, we seem to know exactly what Bungie has planned.

As reported by TheGamePost, Bungie recently sent out a survey to a select number of players. For our purposes, the most interesting question saw Bungie ask: “For each of the following games and their respective franchises, which of the following ways would you be interested in engaging with each franchise?”

With that, the full list of transmedia Destiny products which we may end up seeing is as follows:

  • Board Games
  • Live Action TV Shows
  • Animated TV Shows
  • Animated Movies
  • Live Action Movies
  • Podcasts
  • Music
  • Collectibles (e.g., Action Figures, Figurines, Branded Items)
  • Theatre Plays / Musicals
  • Comics / Graphic Novels
  • Books / Novels
  • Webtoon
  • Trading Card Games (Physical)

We have already seen nearly half a dozen Destiny books released as well as a comic series, and with Bungie stating that “any of these options could become available for the franchise” the prospect of a live action Destiny adaptation is very much in play.

It’s been almost a year since Sony announced its acquisition of Bungie and externally we have seen little in the way of any direct consequences of this move. As such, it is exciting to hear of the mounting evidence which claims that we will soon get much more from the world of Destiny.

Destiny’s lore is rich, varied and unique. It is unfortunate that the games have been mostly unable to capture and express this lore in an enticing way. Hopefully, the expansion to other forms of media helps to flesh out the world of Destiny in a new way.

One of the biggest surprise hits of the last year was Vampire Survivors – a horde fighting indie game which requires you only to move your character. Despite its simple controls and concept, Vampire Survivors has a surprising amount of depth, both in its gameplay as well as the title’s story and lore. That said, it is still surprising to see that an animated adaptation of the game has now been officially announced.

As reported by Deadline, Vampire Survivors is set to get an animated adaptation for television in collaboration with studio Story Kitchen – co-founded by John Wick creator and writer Derek Kolstad and producer Dmitri M. Johnson.

The adaptation is still in its early stages of development, with neither a writer nor an associated network having been announced. That said, in speaking on this upcoming adaptation, Vampire Survivors’ creator Luca Galante said:

“The most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story, so it’s a dream come true to see what started as a little indie game I made on my weekends come to life as an animated TV show! It’s also great to be partnering up with such experienced and talented people to make the show. I do wonder if they’ve realized that there isn’t a single vampire in Vampire Survivors, though.”

Story Kitchen co-founder Dmitri M. Johnson added that “When our Head of Creative, Dan Jevons, flagged Vampire Survivors for us last year upon its initial release, we were prepared to dismiss it as just another vampire game. Hundreds of hours played later, we were all hooked, and we just could not get enough!! Needless to say, we’re truly honored to partner with this incredible team and to continue the Vampire Survivors story!”

As mentioned, Vampire Survivors has a lot of lore and story hidden behind the simplistic gameplay, and so while the announcement may initially come as a surprise to most, creating an adaptation does make sense. It will be interesting to see how the animated show is presented. We will have to wait and see.

Following some major successes, it seems as though the floodgates have been opened wide when it comes to the number of film and tv adaptations in the works based on original video game IPs. One rumoured project was claimed to be a Duke Nukem film, said to be in the works at Gearbox – though we now have official confirmation of its existence.

Last year The Hollywood Reporter claimed that a film based on the Duke Nukem franchise was in the works, though at the time IP owner Gearbox offered no comments on the matter. It is therefore interesting to see that the film has since been announced in a rather uneventful manner, writing as part of a recent studio acquisition press release:

“Gearbox Publishing was established in 2016 with the goal of helping developers around the world bring their products to market while retaining their unique creative visions. Gearbox Studios was formed in 2022 creates cutting-edge transmedia opportunities, including the upcoming movies and series based on Borderlands, Duke Nukem, and Brothers in Arms. Gearbox Properties was founded in 2022 to manage Gearbox's wide variety of intellectual property across all products, mediums, and merchandise categories.”

This seems to be the first official acknowledgement of the film’s existence, and as such, it’ll be curious to see whether this was intentional or if the press release simply jumped the gun in that regard.

Either way, Duke Nukem very much feels like a product of its time and so hopefully Gearbox plans to take the character and world in an interesting direction. We will have to wait and see.

These days it seems as though any and all successful video game IPs will eventually be adapted into a different medium. The latest game to be getting such a treatment is Capcom’s Onimusha franchise, with Netflix now announcing that the series will be getting an anime adaptation.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Netflix Anime account said “It's your first look at ONIMUSHA, an anime based on CAPCOM's legendary game. Created by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai from Sublimation, with Musashi Miyamoto modeled after Toshiro Mifune.”

Alongside this, the streaming giant released a few key images from the anime, giving us a look at the show’s art style. As can be seen, the anime seems to be using 3D models to emulate traditional 2D animation. This technique has become more and more common over the years, however early reactions to the art style seem to be somewhat negative.

Of course, it is far too early to judge the quality based on a few screenshots, and for fans of the Onimusha franchise, seeing it being revived in any format is a boon for a series which has not seen a new entry since 2006. Hopefully this is the start of an Onimusha revival.

We've known for a while now that Netflix is looking to expand its roster of video game adaptations, both in the form of films and TV series. After tackling the likes of Resident Evil and Castlevania, Netflix will now be trying its hand at a BioShock adaptation.

In partnership with 2K Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, Netflix has announced plans to produce a film adaptation of BioShock:

The announcement does not specify if this will be live-action or animated. It also doesn't clarify if we can expect a reworking of the game's story, or an original plot based in the BioShock universe.

The announcement is still thin on details, so we also don't know when to expect a trailer, cast details or a release date. However, it is worth noting that this is not the first attempt at making a BioShock film, with several previous attempts having been scrapped at Universal Pictures.

KitGuru Says: BioShock is brimming with interesting lore and ideas that I do think it is a shame that we'll be getting a film over a more expansive TV series. What do you all think about the BioShock movie finally happening after all these years?

Despite first releasing back in 2005, the Yakuza series appears to be more popular than ever. As part of the ever-expanding game universe, SEGA has now announced that a live-action film adaptation of the Yakuza series will be developed, with the potential for multiple films being in the cards.

As reported by Variety, a live-action adaptation of the Yakuza franchise is currently in development from SEGA, alongside 1212 Entertainment and Wild Sheep Content. Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande and Joshua Long are set to produce the project.

The film is very much in its early stages, with the studios still searching for potential writers. That being said, it appears as though the studios have big plans for the adaptation, with 1212 saying “Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before,” adding that “the saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption.”

With the adaptation seemingly focusing on the franchise’s protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, it is entirely possible that SEGA plans to turn this game franchise into a film franchise. Kiryu’s story develops over the course of 7 games, and so there is plenty of material for the studios to work with.

With SEGA’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation seeing such great success, there is hope that Yakuza will be equally as well received.

The Resident Evil series is one of gaming’s most well known franchises, with over 93 million copies sold across over a dozen titles. The series has also seen a film franchise adaptation, which collectively grossed over $1.2 billion at the box office. It is no surprise therefore to hear that a series adaptation is in the works at Netflix, but thanks to a  now removed – plot summary, we know more details on what to expect.

The plot summary was discovered through Netflix’s Media Centre, and described the series as follows: “The town of Clearfield, MD has long stood in the shadow of three seemingly unrelated behemoths – the Umbrella Corporation, the decommissioned Greenwood Asylum, and Washington, D.C. Today, twenty-six years after the discovery of the T-Virus, secrets held by the three will start to be revealed at the first signs of outbreak.”

Few details are known about the series otherwise, but this wouldn’t be Netflix’s first video game adaptation. The production company has previously produced a Castlevania anime series, which will soon release its third season. A Devil May Cry series is also in the works, and of course, Netflix’s The Witcher also released late last year (although the show is based on the books, not video games). Both the Castlevania series, and Witcher series were received positively, lending more confidence to the quality of the upcoming Resident Evil adaptation.

There is currently no information as to when the show is set to release, though filming is said to be taking place between June and October, meaning the show is likely still quite a ways off. During this time, fans won’t be starved of Resident Evil content however, as the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake is set to release on the 3rd of April 2020.
