Ever since they helped Infinity Ward with the development of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 all the way back in 2011, Sledgehammer Games have been positioned as the 3rd main development studio for the highly popular franchise – having been the lead dev for entries including Advanced Warfare, WWII and COD Vanguard. As part of a company restructuring, it was revealed that Sledgehammer’s next game is slated for 2027.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, as part of Microsoft’s recent spree of lay-offs affecting almost 2000 employees, Sledgehammer Games were greatly impacted, losing almost a 3rd of their entire workforce. What’s more, the studio’s main office in California is being shut down, with devs moving to a work from home structure until the end of 2024.

In the past, Sledgehammer Games have gotten the short end of the stick from Activision, with many of their games being developed under strict timelines – historically leading to a less than stellar reception. Such was the case with the most recent Modern Warfare 3, with Sledgehammer being tasked with developing the game’s multiplayer.

Fortunately, despite all the chaos surrounding the studio currently, the team will hopefully have plenty of time to work on their next game, as according to the report, Sledgehammer Games’ next title is planned to release in 2027. If this is the case, then it will have been 4 years since MW3 and 6 entire years since their last game as primary developer (2021’s COD Vanguard).

Despite the common consensus, Sledgehammer Games has a great deal of potential and talent, but has been mostly hampered by Activision Blizzard’s antics. Hopefully their 2027 title proves that given time, Sledgehammer can produce a truly excellent game. We will have to wait and see.

Call of Duty studios typically operate on a three-year development cycle, with each new entry rotating between Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. Following the critical reception of 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, Sledgehammer Games are reportedly dropping the WWII setting in favour of returning to Advanced Warfare.

Ahead of the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Vanguard remains the most recent entry in the FPS franchise. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, the WWII shooter launched late last year to a middling reception across the board, with players seemingly once again bored of shooters set during the World Wars.

According to WhatIfGaming, while the team at Sledgehammer Games originally planned to develop multiple sequels to Vanguard, its poor reception has now led them to reach further back into their repertoire, instead working on a sequel to 2014’s Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.

Unsurprisingly, the game will reportedly utilise the IW 9.0 engine (the same engine powering COD MWII), meaning that Advanced Warfare 2 should offer some major upgrades over the first game when it releases in 2025.

Of course, all this should be taken with a pinch of salt. That being said, Advanced Warfare was one of the most fun COD games in recent memory, and so returning to the jetpack future of Advanced Warfare will be welcome – at least by some fans.

KitGuru says: Would you like to see Advanced Warfare 2? What did you think of the first game? Did you prefer Black Ops 3 and Infinite Warfare’s jetpacks, or Advanced Warfare’s? Let us know down below.

After spending several years working on the Call of Duty franchise, it looks like Sledgehammer Games' co-founders, Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield, are ready to try something new. The pair helped create and direct Call of Duty: WWII and Advanced Warfare and will now be moving on from Sledgehammer Games to take up other positions.

In their place, Aaron Halon, who previously acted as Senior Development Director on COD: WWII, will now take over as head of the whole studio. Despite departing from Sledgehammer Games, Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey will be remaining within Activision.

In a statement sent to Kotaku, Activision confirmed the various changes: “Following the incredible success of Call of Duty: WWII, Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey have decided to transition from their duties at Sledgehammer Games to new executive duties inside Activision.”

The publisher added that this change has “created an opportunity to elevate one of the key leaders at the studio, Aaron Halon, to lead Sledgehammer Games”. Aaron was one of the founding members of the studio and has two decades worth of experience in the games industry, making him a perfect fit for the role.

As for more background on Condrey and Schofield, prior to working on Call of Duty, the pair headed up EA's Visceral Games, and led development on Dead Space. Now that the pair are free from Call of Duty, they will be exploring other game ideas under the Activision banner.

KitGuru Says: This is a pretty major studio shakeup but to me, the timing makes sense. Call of Duty: WWII put the franchise back in a good place, so it seems like a good time to step back and let the game run its course. It will be interesting to see what Schofield and Condrey end up doing next.

If it feels like far too long since you've set the world ablaze with more bullets and explosions that even the Expendables would feel was excessive, never fear, as the next Call of Duty isn't far away. Along with a number of new screenshots, the next game in the series, Black Ops III has a new trailer to show off its story and a few new features.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58Pspqx0XGs']

Taking gamers into the near future once again, CoD: Black Ops III gives them the chance to play with weaponry that would make the Crysis battle suit shy away in fear. There's nanoswarms and morphing robot fists, giant walking tanks and even a few combat robots to shoot apart guilt free.

The tone of the trailer seems much more celebratory of the game's ridiculousness than previous series entries, and it certainly seems to have learned from other popular FPS titles that adding wall running is a must. Hacking also seems possible with the wave of a magic-robot hand and we even know that the game will feature a cooperative campaign and the usual zombies mode, for added hijinks.

Call of Duty Black Ops III is being developed by Treyarch and is set for release on the 6th November this year.

Activision and Sledgehammer Games have announced the next DLC for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, ‘Ascendance’, will be launching on the 31st of March, bringing four new maps and a new chapter for the Exo Zombies mode.

The 31st of March release date is for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 as part of Microsoft’s deal with Activision. The DLC pack is due to hit the PlayStation 4, PS3 and PC one month later, at the end of April.

The four maps included include Perplex, Site 244, Climate and Chop Shop. The next chapter for Exo Zombies will be set on “the outskirts of an Atlas facility” and will introduce new zombie types to the mix.

There will be two new weapons, the OHM directed energy light machine gun and the OHM Werewolf custom variant. Finally, Advanced Warfare players will be getting a new multiplayer playlist called Exo Grapple, which takes place on Ascendance maps exclusively.

Ascendance follows on from Havoc, which came out in January. There are two more planned DLC packs set to launch later this year known as ‘Supremacy’ and ‘Reckoning’.

Activision is currently issuing copyright strikes on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare YouTube videos that show off in-game glitches, cheats and hacks. This information came from an internal email that the network Machinima sent to its partners, warning against uploading these sort of videos.

“Activision is being particularly vigilant about their Call of Duty videos lately; issuing strikes on videos showing glitches. If you post videos highlighting these glitches, your channel may be liable to receive a copyright strike so please be careful”, the email reads.

Call-of-Duty-Advanced-Warfare-Multiplayer-Screenshots-4

However, Activision claims that it isn't attempting to hide evidence of problems within the game, but rather diminish the number of cheaters by keeping glitch and hack videos off of YouTube:

“Occasionally, some folks post videos that promote cheating and unfair exploits. As always, we keep an eye out for these videos”, the publisher's statement reads. “We're excited that so many fans are having fun playing the game and posting videos of their gameplay. We love watching the videos ourselves. We are appreciative of the community's support in helping to ensure that everyone has the best playing experience possible.”

Unfortunately, these copyright strikes can seriously damage YouTube channels and in some cases, kill them off entirely. Accounts with copyright strike will be classes as ‘in bad standing', which removes access to a few features which can include the ability to set videos as private or unlisted, add custom thumbnails and even live stream. Accounts that receive three strikes will be terminated entirely.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the first time a big publisher has taken a controversial approach to gameplay videos on YouTube. However, will hurting content creators with copyright strikes really put a stop to glitch exploits? What do you guys think of Activision's approach?

This year's Call of Duty game has released, bringing new blood to the franchise in the form of a new developer, Sledgehammer Games. The studio has kept an eye on player feedback following launch and is ready to rollout the first set of changes to the gameplay along with some fixes.

An upcoming patch will fix Prestige reset issues, change the placement of the in-game chat, fix speed reloading and finally add in some connection optimizations, hopefully fixing the game breaking lag many users have been experiencing. Additionally, some changes will be made to the challenges required to unlock camos for weapons and allow users to unlock eSports options in private matches.

Activision has also addressed concerns regarding dedicated servers:

Advanced Warfare employs game servers hosted at data centers globally on all platforms and listen servers as part of our proprietary matchmaking system. Our goal is to ensure the best possible connection and greatest gameplay experience regardless of location and time of day.”

Advanced Warfare will likely receive a few more changes over the coming months but so far the game seems to be relatively stable- aside from the intermittent lag issues.

Sledgehammer Games co-founder, Glen Schofield, has spoken out about the recent Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare leak and he's not particularly happy about it. The game was apparently stolen and then streamed live via Twitch, showing off a bunch of unannounced details ahead of the game's official release next week.

The leak occurred yesterday afternoon when a user called Anfunny29 started streaming Advanced Warfare gameplay. Several Call of Duty YouTuber's were quick to nab all the information and footage they could before the stream got shut down. One new feature that seems to be getting fans excited is the DNA Bomb, a new 30 killstreak reward that kills the enemy team and then leaves behind a green mist that spreads throughout the battlefield before disappearing.

call-of-duty-advanced-warfare-screen-002-1500x844

Players will also be able to turn on and off Paintball effects, a full list of weapon camouflage patters was also revealed. Video game leaks tend to happen from time to time but Glen Schofield was pretty disappointed, tweeting out “We took 3 years 2 make a game.Kept it quiet 4 the fans & it has to be stolen & leaked a week b4. That sucks. A real bummer. Thanks a lot.”

One follower suggested that the leak was needed as many potential buyers weren't satisfied with the amount of information currently available. However, Schofield went on to say that the game must have been stolen at some point, saying that “stealing and releasing is not the answer”.

When people tried to make it out like the leak wasn't a big deal, the Sledgehammer co-founder added that “It is a big deal to us because discovery while playing is part of the fun. It will all be good, just saying”.

KitGuru Says: It does seem a little unfair to take a hard working developer's big moment away from them. A successful launch and subsequent discovery of all of the game's new features would have garnered up a lot of praise and attention. While launch day may still go well for the team, a lot of the surprise has been taken out of it. That said, developers should pretty much expect leaks these days, there aren't many surprises left in gaming or tech, unfortunately. What do you guys think? Do you care about leaks? Would you rather have every last bit of information prior to release?

Pre-orders are declining in the video game industry and according to Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg, even a franchise as huge as Call of Duty is not immune to the effects of that, despite its relevance in pop culture.

Speaking with investors and transcribed by Seeking Alpha, Hirshberg said that we can expect to see a downturn in pre-orders across the industry:

“You see the secular downturn across the industry as it relates to pre-orders, and Call of Duty is not immune to that. However, within that context, we still expect the Call of Duty to lead the industry in pre-orders once again this year.”

Call-Of-Duty-Advanced-Warfare2

The CEO then went on to re-assure investors that while pre-orders might be in decline, consumer studies have shown that there is still high purchase intent for both Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and the company's upcoming new IP, Destiny:

“And also, like with Destiny, we also look at other metrics as well and we're seeing a lot of strength in those metrics, particularly, we have an internal quantitative consumer study and we're seeing purchase intent for Advanced Warfare to be significantly above that which we saw in Ghost, and actually in line with our past top-performing titles.”

There is no specific reason behind this decline in pre-orders but it's certainly not down to publishers not pushing them enough. We see exclusive pre-order content and retail exclusives for most big games these days, not to mention the countless special and collector editions of big titles.

KitGuru Says: At least Activision is appearing level headed, Call of Duty won't be this profitable forever, eventually people will stop buying or something new will rise up and take over. What do you guys think of pre-ordering games? How many of you pre-order and how many of you avoid doing so?
