The most recent batch of PS+ Essential titles recently became available and now it is time to turn our attention to this month's update for PS+ Extra and Premium subscribers. The higher PS+ tiers include access to an evolving library of games. Despite rumours that The Last of Us Part II would be joining the service this month, it turns out that is not the case.

Bilbil-Kun has leaked PS+ line-ups with perfect accuracy for years. In their most recent Dealabs post, they confirm that The Last of Us Part II is not part of the October PS+ Extra or Premium line-ups. However, we will be getting roughly 20 new games this month, with Sony planning to announce them officially on the 11th of October.

The eight confirmed titles coming this month include:

  • Gotham Knights
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
  • Disco Elysium The Final Cut
  • Far: Changing Tides
  • Gungrave GORE
  • Elite Dangerous
  • Dead Island Definitive Edition
  • Alien Isolation

Of this group, Gotham Knights might be the biggest game addition and the timing makes sense too, as the game also recently dropped on Xbox Game Pass. With it being October, the additions of games like Alien Isolation, The Dark Pictures Anthology and Dead Island make perfect sense.

PS+ Extra and Premium titles for October will become available on the 17th.

KitGuru Says: Based on what has been revealed so far, October could be a down month for PS+ Extra subscribers. However, with less than half of the total planned games being revealed, there is plenty of room for Sony to surprise us.

We finally got our first taste of a decent Alien horror game with Alien Isolation years ago. Unfortunately, we never got the sequel that game deserved. However, a new survival horror Alien game is said to be in the works now, and it could be coming out next year.

According to sources speaking with Insider Gaming, a new AAA Alien game is in development with a planned holiday 2023 release date. The game is set to be a survival horror game, taking inspiration from the greats, like Resident Evil and Dead Space.

For now, not much else has leaked and we do not know which studio is working on the project, but if Creative Assembly is behind it, then we may finally be getting a successor to Alien Isolation, even if it isn't a direct sequel.

If all of this pans out, we should be hearing about this game officially sometime next year, unless the project gets pushed into 2024.

KitGuru Says: The latest Resident Evil trilogy and the remakes have seemingly sparked interest in big-budget survival horror games again and it is great to see. Resident Evil is thriving, Dead Space is coming back, Silent Hill is coming back and it seems we'll finally be getting a new Alien horror game too.

Each week, the Epic Games Store offers a number of titles for free to all those with an Epic Games Account. While the scope of the games offered vary from week to week, currently players can get their hands on the much-loved survival horror game Alien: Isolation.

From Now until the 29th of April, all those with an Epic Games account can purchase Alien: Isolation and Hand of Fate 2 entirely for free. Hand of Fate 2 is a roguelike dungeon crawler which uses the unique mechanic of cards to determine how the game pans out. The mixture and melding of multiple genres makes Hand of Fate 2 a unique game indeed.

Alien: Isolation is a first person survival horror experience based on the popular Alien film franchise, Developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA, Alien: isolation was well received by both critics and fans alike, with particular praise being given to the game’s atmosphere and faithfulness to the franchise.

Both Alien: Isolation and Hand of Fate 2 are currently available to purchase and download completely for free until the 29th of April at 4pm BST, at which point they will be replaced by the Dungeons & Dragons strategy management video game Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms (though once added to your library, these games will remain there indefinitely).

In the days leading up to the end of the year, the Epic Games Store has upped its weekly free game offerings, now gifting a free title every single day. Currently, those with an Epic Games account can get their hands on Alien: Isolation, the much-loved BAFTA winning survival horror title from Creative Assembly.

Available for free from now until 4pm GMT, Alien: Isolation is set 15 years after the original 1979 horror classic and follows Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, who “learns that the flight recorder from her mother's ship has been recovered. Amanda enters Sevastopol space station to finally solve the mystery of her mother's disappearance, only to confront an unknown menace.”

The game received a positive reception from both fans and critics alike, thanks to the game’s atmosphere, interesting mechanics, and the Alien’s AI, which helps to maintain a sense of tension and fear over the course of a playthrough.

Alongside Alien: Isolation, all of the game’s DLC is currently on offer. Though not free, they are heavily discounted, allowing those who enjoy the base game to experience all that there is at a greatly reduced cost.

Alien: Isolation is currently free to purchase and download from now until 4pm GMT later today, at which point it will be replaced by another as-of-yet-unknown ‘mystery game’.

If you have never played Alien Isolation on PC, then now is your best chance to pick it up, as SEGA has put the game on sale for just £1.50 on Steam to celebrate Alien Day.

Creative Assembly's lone Alien-based videogame was a huge success back when it launched, garnering praise from critics and players alike. As Amanda Ripley, you are tasked with searching an abandoned space station, where a Xenamorph is running loose. The Alien isn't all you have to worry about either.

You can buy the base game for £1.50 on Steam until 4PM BST tomorrow. Alternatively, if you want all of the DLCs, the Alien Isolation Collection is also on sale for £8.74, which includes seven bits of extra content.

The 2010 Alien VS Predator game is also on sale for £1.99 at the moment, although that one wasn't quite as well received as Isolation.

Alien: Isolation served as a rejuvenation for the Alien franchise when it released in 2014. The game was seen as a return to form, especially after the release of the critically panned ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’, in 2013. While fans eagerly await a sequel, those who have yet to play it, or simply wish to play the game a second time, can now do so on the Nintendo Switch, as the game has now received a release date for the hybrid console.

Alien: Isolation was announced for the Switch back during E3 this year. It was slated to release during 2019, but until now, had no solid release date. The survival horror game has now been given a release date of the 5th of December.

Alien: Isolation will cost £29.99, and while that may seem steep for a 5 year old game, the title will be packaged with all 7 of its DLC packs. Furthermore, the game will support gyroscope aiming, and HD rumble, meaning that encounters with the alien will be even more tense, as you feel the alien breathing down your neck.

Originally developed by Creative Assembly, Feral Interactive have taken porting duties for the game, having ported the MacOS and Linux versions previously. While many of the Alien: Isolation design team no longer work at Creative Assembly, the game received multiple awards, including a BAFTA, and has inspired a mobile spin-off, alongside comic book sequels and novelisations.

A sequel was at one point considered, and with the game having sold over 2 million copies, and being ported to Switch 5 years after its original release, it would make sense if SEGA’s decision to port the game wasn’t being done in ‘isolation’.

SEGA recently revealed its latest financial results, showing that Creative Assembly's widely praised title, Alien Isolation, managed to sell around 1.8 million copies since its launch towards thee end of October last year. This is a jump from January's reported figure, which showed that the game had surpassed 1 million sales.

While Alien Isolation has managed to do fairly well considering Sega's damaged reputation following Alien: Colonial Marines, the publisher's Wii U exclusive, Sonic Boom, hasn't done so well. The latest major game in the Sonic franchise only managed to sell 490,000 copies since launch.

alien_isolatio_launch_screens-9-600x338

The low sales count isn't too surprising if you consider all of the factors. The Wii U already isn't doing so well in the sales department so there isn't a huge install base of customers. However, that alone wouldn't have held back the game too much, unfortunately, reviews of the title weren't so good and it launched with a series of bugs and issues.

In total, Sega's holiday 2014 sales were down by 93 per cent, netting them just $17.16 million, rather than the $275.4 million made during the holiday season of 2013.

GOG, the DRM free games store likes to give away classic games occasionally, it previously gave away the classic Fallout titles and the company has now teamed up with developer, Rebellion, to give away the classic Alien VS Predator 2000 game.

There is a small catch, GOG is looking to attract people to participate in its GOG Galaxy beta, the DRM free gaming platform that works cross-platform with Steam for multiplayer titles. Those who take advantage of AVP on GOG, will still be able to play with friends who play the game's multiplayer through Steam, a point that both GOG and Rebellion are keen to point out.

To redeem the game you need to sign up for the next stage of the GOG Galaxy beta and then you'll receive an activation code “within the next few days”. Once the game has been added to your account, you can play it forever and even download it outside of GOG Galaxy if you want to, although you should probably give it a go anyway just to be polite, you might even end up liking it.

The game will include Xbox 360 controller support for those of you who like to play hooked up to a TV or just don't like using the mouse and keyboard. However, this is primarily a shooter, so using a controller will generally put you at a slight disadvantage.

Today sees the worldwide release of Alien: Isolation, potentially the best Alien (not Alien vs Predator mind you) game ever released. It's reviewed well, with most highlighting the xenomorph's lifelike hunting as being a real scare generator, even if some of the game does feel a bit padded. Still, for those of us not quite ready to face the Alien menace in its natural hunting ground of a man-made space station, here's the launch trailer to tempt you to step aboard the Sevastapol to see just what happened to the crew there and potentially Ellen Ripley too.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trPIYFR-zAk']

While the gameplay and pacing of Isolation isn't perfect, it is at least incredibly faithful to the source material. The flickering video, giant chunky 80's tech and the monstrous looking xenomorph itself, have all been lovingly recreated, giving the whole project a feel of invested time and effort. Unlike that last attempt at an Alien franchise title. We're looking at you Gearbox.

Gearbox, the developer behind the Borderlands series and Aliens: Colonial Marines, received a bomb threat at its headquarters last Friday. Oddly enough, the threat was called in at around 7:30 PM, after most of the employees had already gone home but once the bomb squad arrived, it was revealed that the whole thing was a hoax.

Gearbox President, Randy Pitchford, live tweeted the Friday night drama, stating that most employees had already left the building, his tweets also told us that a bomb disposal robot was required to check over a car left in the parking lot. The bomb disposal unit didn't find anything.

Gearbox hoax bomb threat

The police aren't disclosing any details about the threat at the moment and its not clear if it actually had anything to do with attacking Gearbox or if it was aimed at one of the other companies that work in the same building.

Back in August, a hacking group caused a Playstation Network outage and supposedly called in a bomb threat, resulting in the grounding of a plane carrying Sony Online Entertainment president, John Smedley. It's not clear if this hoax bomb threat was carried out by the same group.

If Dallas taught us anything in the first Alien film, it's that vents don't save you from the Xenomorph, so why Amanda Ripley thinks it's a great idea to go waltzing down one in the latest trailer from Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation is beyond me.

I use the word “waltz” deliberately, too, as while Amanda might be breathing heavily and sounding every bit afraid, her actions upon seeing the Xenomorph hot on her tail are far too relaxed. Move Ripley!

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPWOCHSEKXg']

This is the third in a series of advisory videos released by the developers, showing that almost whatever you do, the Alien is able to hunt you down and put its very suggestive tail right through your chest. We can't run, we can't shoot and now it seems playing around in the air-vents is out.

While early trailers of the game showed the ingenuity of the protagonist, Amanda Ripley and much of what she can do in the game, right now Creative Assembly seems to be throwing down the gauntlet and asking gamers if they even think it's possible that they'll make it through the game. In the first trailer released a couple of days ago, entitled “no escape,” we see Amanda making a brave run for it while some other hapless fools distract the Xenomorph threat… only it doesn't go so well.

The level on show is the one we've seen a fair amount of already. It's the one with the lockers, the eviscerated android and the table that kicked off the Alien franchise back in the day with its round table meetings and initial chest bursting.

The ‘if I can't see it, it can't see me' defence seems to be the most effective.

One new addition is getting to see the Xenomorph actually kill some players though. In one instance Amanda is running away from the alien menace, only to be forced to a standstill. When she looks down, there's a huge alien tail protruding from her rib cage. In another instance a player is pounced on and a horrifying alien hand covers their face before the camera fades to black.

Whatever your thoughts on Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines, one thing they did get right with it, was the sounds of the assault rifles and that's commendable, even if the rest of the game isn't. And that's because sound in the Alien universe is incredibly important. The original film's orchestral score and all its funny little noises were part of the reason it was so terrifying and lonely. That's something Creative Assembly is really taking into consideration with Alien: Isolation, trying to nail that feel of truly being alone with your own thoughts and the sounds of something hunting you.

Along with some devblog-like interviews, there's also some new in-game footage in this one, so even if soundtracks don't get you excited, it's still worth checking out:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eByJAmVXb5E']

With such an auditory legacy as it has making an Alien game, Creative Assembly put together its own orchestra for sound recording, even managing to secure some of the artists that played on the original Alien movie soundtrack. Other sounds we see being created with foley work – stamping on a shower basin, crushing fruit etc.

aliensoundtrack
Who knew the soundtrack to your demise could be so beautiful?

But all of this sound, the scratches and scrabbles and even the orchestral stings, are important to survival. When you're hiding in the dark, listening out for the Xenomorph may be your only chance.

Just to amp up the tension even more too, the game's soundtrack knows when you're hiding and will deliberately make the music more urgent and threatening.

KitGuru Says: Damn it. I think I'm going to need one of you guys to play this with me. Maybe if you work the mouse and I'll do the keyboard we can hold hands still. I think that's the only way I'll make it through a single level of this one.

Even for a big Alien fan like me, when we first saw the earliest leaked images of Alien: Isolation, I sighed. It wasn't that long since Gearbox had killed much of the world's interest in games featuring the Xenomorph and I think most were soured on the idea of the franchise – until we saw the first trailer. Now suddenly it was clear, Creative Assembly has put a lot of thought into this game, it knows what Alien is all about and why the Xenomorph was terrifying and that's just as clear in this latest devblog, where the creators talk about building the perfect player hunter.

Instead of Gearbox's cookie cutter Aliens that you could literally run past, Creative Assembly has gone to the roots of the Alien franchise with its Xenomorph and created a single, large, stalking beast that will systematically hunt the player, using what the developers describe as non-scripted movements. They're apparently given it real senses to hunt the player with, meaning you'll have to be quiet, as well as unseen.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0yxWcY3LDM']

In some instances, players have found themselves cornered by the beast without a confrontation, leading to long drawn out sequences of unscripted terror. If they added even one obvious pattern to its behaviour, the devs know that it would stop becoming scary as players would then start to see the strings that control its puppetry. Making it work off of what the player does and how they interact with the environment, is far more lifelike and therefore far harder to predict or defend against.

alienisolation

The Xenomorph will be able to stalk slowly – and creepily – through the environment as it hunts you, as well as moving at blinding speed, without looking like an animated model. At least that's the plan. Considering there shouldn't be more than a couple of characters in the game, chances are the animators have had a lot of time to work with the Xenomorph model.

KitGuru Says: I have high hopes for this game, and I so hope I'm not disappointed. If this is done as well as it looks, it could be the perfect Alien game.

As you might imagine, the guys over at Creative Assembly are quite busy at the moment. Not only are they working on Total War: Arena, but they're also handling the final few months of development on an Alien title that has against all odds, got the world interested in the franchise again. After the colossal misstep that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, we all thought it would be a long time before we stepped back aboard any vessel in the Alien universe, but here we are just a few weeks after early screenshots and a trailer and I'm all giddy with excitement. Fortunately as swamped as they are, we were able to grab hold of community manager for Alien: Isolation, Nee N, who talked us through a few aspects of the game that until now we didn't know much about.

One of the first questions we put to Nee however, was what made Creative Assembly go down the route of developing a first person horror title? It's a developer that's almost entirely known for its RTS developments (though I must admit I enjoyed 2008's Viking: Battle for Asgard) even if back in the 90's it was more of a sports developer. Nee addressed this, saying:

“Creative Assembly haven't always just created RTS games. Even though we're more known for the Total War titles, we have made games ranging from adventure to sports games in the past – that might be a historical, lesser-known fact.”

alienisolation1
The earliest look we had at the game teased us with this image

For Alien: Isolation though, Creative Assembly looked outwards, taking on new staff and team members to produce the game and hoovering up a lot of talent from other developers: “The Alien: Isolation team is a brand new team, formed to make the game,” she said. “Members from our team have come from Square Enix, Rockstar, Ubi Soft, PlayStation and Microsoft, so it's a very broad spectrum of experiences. Our combined backgrounds, I think, gives us a good set of experiences that ensures we can work on Alien: Isolation with the love and knowledge that the game deserves.”

In terms of why they were a good fit for this particular game though, Nee simply said: “We’re massive fans of Ridley Scott's original film Alien […] There's some hard-core fans in the studio, and having that love for the brand has really helped shape the game.”

Of course, considering I couldn't even make it into the third sentence of this piece without bringing up Aliens: Colonial Marines, the other Sega published Alien franchise title from the past few years, the same was the case in my interview with Nee. While I had hoped for a little insight into what Creative Assembly thought of Gearbox's efforts, she was very diplomatic when I asked if ACM had affected the development of Alien: Isolation:

“Work on Alien Isolation began over three years ago and from the beginning we were always clear on what we wanted the game to be and how we wanted to achieve that. Alien: Isolation is a very unique game and I think that nothing like it has been made before. We're taking the heart of Ridley's Scott original film Alien and building a single player, survival horror game.

“It's very different from any Alien game, so it is very hard to compare it to anything that has come before, really,” she concluded.

alieniso4
The fact that there's only a single (giant) Xenomorph certainly sets Isolation apart from previous Alien efforts

Getting more into the meat of the game, we also discussed some of its features, most notably the hinted at crafting system. There's been talks of (admittedly ineffective) weapons and we've seen a jury rigged welding torch, but how involved will the player be in the creation and usage of these tools?

The aim of the game is to survive [and] the crafting aspect is one of a number of ways that you can survive against the Alien,” said Nee. “[But] even if you get hold of a weapon you want to hang on to, it may not be the best thing to take on a 3 meter tall Alien with! We’re playing around with a crafting system with the idea that you'll be able to obtain items, which will help deflect or deter the Alien from brutally mauling you to death. Obviously, as it is about survival, it's also about using your wits, the environment and looking around and seeing what's there and what you can use.”

alieniso3
There's a lot of eeriness that comes out of implied action, rather than showing it

It's very clear that Creative Assembly is sticking to the survival horror handbook with this game and is keen to distance itself from more action heavy Alien titles of yesteryear – whatever those might be.

We're not about running around, gunning things down, that isn't Alien: Isolation. In survival games, you do what you must do to live, and there will be opportunities to use objects and items that will help you to do just that.”

Objects and weapons are great and all, but in the original film it was all about Ellen Ripley. She had the tenacity and the – for lack of a better word – balls to survive against one of the most deadly fictional antagonists ever created. It was she that killed it in the end. But she's not featured in the upcoming game, her daughter is, so the question is: how will she fare?

“The Amanda in our game has to be versatile, tough and resilient to survive what she’s about to encounter,” Nee said. “She’s ultimately an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation, so the parallels to Ellen Ripley aren’t surprising. Personally, I like to think that Amanda’s got her fair share of Ellen’s genetics; she’s a true survivor and just as kick-ass. Ellen Ripley is one of the most iconic female figures in movie history for a reason and I’d like to think Amanda’s got those qualities by the bucket load too! “

alienisolation3
We got our first look at Ripley with the recent batch of released screenshots

The question remains though, how does Amanda end up in space, fighting against the same alien creatures that her mother did? Of course the Weland Yutani Corporation– the real antagonist from every single Alien film – is involved.

“The game is set fifteen years after the events of Alien, and Amanda has grown up, always wondering what has happened to her mother. She's currently working for Weyland-Yutani and is approached by an employee of the company, Samuels, to say that they‘ve found the black box flight recorder, ejected from the Nostromo in the moments before its destruction,” Nee continued. “It’s on a station called Sevastopol and Samuels offers Amanda the chance to go with them and to unlock the secret of what happened to her mother.”

Of course when Amdanda arrives however, things don't go to plan. In some early screenshots, we even saw some crayons and child drawings at a breakfast table, suggesting that whenever the Xenomorph arrived, it changed the game on the local inhabitants, very quickly. Perhaps we'll see Amanda looking after one of these children in homage to her mother's own protection years later (since Amanda is said to have died by the time Ellen Ripley is awoken from cryosleep in Aliens) of the little colonist girl Newt.

Nee was a little coy in answering that one: “Sevastopol is a giant station, originally designed to hold hundreds of people who worked and lived there, including families. Naturally, that includes kids as well, but that was before it was decommissioned. The area that you guys saw on the trailer is a habitation area, where people would have gathered to eat meals, catch up and socialise. I think it's natural to assume that there would have been children there as well, eating their breakfasts, scribbling away with a crayon! “

In closing, I have to admit I tipped my hat to Creative Assembly's nailing of the original Alien aesthetic. There's CRT monitors everywhere, which is a very contrasting look from most contemporary interpretations of the future, but it makes the original movie still stand out and the game has too in early footage.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTrS8KvFfRo']

“The ‘lo-fi sci-fi' look – as we’re calling it – was something we had to absolutely nail, being so heavily inspired by the original film,” Nee said. “We wanted this feel throughout the entire game, so a lot of research went into perfecting it. We've worked with Fox to acquire additional film footage, additional film production notes and info and we're hoping that the authenticity of the original films really comes through in the final game.”

While I was limited in the amount of time I had with Nee, I did try and slip in one final question on whether Alien: Isolation would support the Oculus Rift or other VR headsets. Unfortunately, she deftly sidestepped it, saying we'd run out of time. When I suggested that the lack of a yes or not meant it was a maybe, she said: “I simply don't have the answer for it right now so unfortunately, can't comment.”

Discuss this on our Facebook page, over HERE.

KitGuru Says: While I'm a complete wet mess when it comes to survival horror games, I am going to force myself to man up enough to play this when released. I've been a big Alien fan since I saw the first movie years ago and while the second is arguably a more exciting film and holds up better because of its pacing, the original still has some of the best sets and atmosphere of any film released since. If Creative Assembly can nail that along with the visuals, we'll be in for a treat when it lands later this year.

Alright guys, let's do this. We've seen teases, heard rumours and glanced upon leaked box art but now finally, Sega has unveiled not only details on the game, but our first look at Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter and a devblog that explains some of the motivations behind the game's development.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnqk12RWWUY'] Did anyone else chuckle at the overly obvious ‘this isn't the final game' notice?

In the trailer we see Ripley making her way – alone – around a station/ship, using tools to cut through bulkheads and avoiding the seemingly stalking presence of the Alien threat. It looks a little scripted in places, which might mean we're in for a pretty linear affair, but I'm still holding out hope that this is more of a survival horror experience, rather than a corridor with a few jump scares.

It's very pretty, but so was the original Aliens: Colonial Marines (ACM) trailer and look how that turned out.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlgg9C5XqKE']

The devblog is even more interesting in reality, as it shows some very heavily influenced scenes that just look fantastic. The silence of the ship, the big, round table from the original movie, the 70s future tech – there's a lot of elements here that have quite clearly been taken from the first Alien film, influences the next Alien game heavily needed after the run (sometimes through whole levels) and gun gameplay from ACM.

You'll also be pleased to hear that there is just a single Xenomorph in this game and you'll be worried about where it's coming from next. Briefly we see a player use their torch to check between some piping, as we all know from the film's ending, that those aliens love hiding between some warm steam ducts.

alienisolation3
No word on who these people are (apart from Ripley), but presumably they're co-op team mates. I wonder what that key around Ripley's neck is for?

At the end of the video they say that they wanted to make the Alien game people have been waiting for. So far it looks like they might have gotten it right, but with the previous Alien game being such a disappointment, it's going to take something special to brush away that jaded view of Alien games.

Alien: Isolation is set for release towards the end of 2014, on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

KitGuru Says: Well I'm still impressed. The trailer looks a little scripted, but it's a trailer, that's sort of the point. I look forward to seeing some more gameplay footage, hopefully with a better look into the scavenging element they briefly touch on in the videos. I want to see how Amannda improvises her defence.

I just hope if I rig up a make-shift flamethrower no idiot stands in the way when I could fry the thing.

The next Sega stab at publishing a game based on the Alien franchise has a lot to live up to after the debacle that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is why everyone held their breath when it became clear it was pushing one out as soon as mid 2014. However it's being made by the Total War developer Creative Assembly and is going down the survival horror route, something that's managed to peak interest enough to perhaps overlook past Alien failures. Now details of the game have appeared on the Xbox Live Store and they continue to sound about right.

“Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger,” reads the game's description. “Fifteen years after the events of Alien, Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda, enters a desperate battle for survival on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother's disappearance.”

This will mark the first time that Amanda Ripley has featured in any medium related to the Alien franchise. In the second movie she was alluded to as having died between films, but that's all we heard of her. This could in-fact mean, that this game is the first meaningful expansion of the Alien franchise since the release of the fourth movie, Resurrection in 1997.

And no I don't count the Aliens vs Predator movies, or that plot screwjob, Promethius.

alienisolation
This preview box art ticks all the right boxes too

The description of Isolation goes on to describe gameplay, saying that players will: “navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien. Underpowered and under-prepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply survive.”

According to the screengrabs of the Xbox Store page (thanks AGB), which unfortunately is no longer active, there will be single player offline play and no local co-op. Venture online though and you'll find up to four player multiplayer and cooperative options.

alien1
Concept renders also have me optimistic. Just look at the CRTs!

It also lists the game as set for release on 1st July 2014. Presumably if it's coming to the Xbox, it'll be hitting the One, 360 and PC for sure, and probably at least one PlayStation as well.

KitGuru Says: I don't want to speculate too much since we're still over six months away from release and we could learn a lot more, but the description sounds like we might get crafting in a survival horror, which could be very exciting if there's lots of AI fodder for the Alien to bump off. What I'd love to see is some sort of non-linear horror where the Alien is taking out the weakest of your group, letting you see your number of allies slowly dwindling around you. That could be very exciting.

We're all a bit jaded on Alien games at the moment, I understand that. Aliens: Colonial Marines was such a colossal disappointment, it's either stupidity or bravery that has Creative Assembly taking that horse away from Gearbox and clambering back on it this soon after release. Which is perhaps why this is leaked imagery and not something official. Still, it looks somewhat promising even in this state.

The two images that have landed come from (where else?) NeoGAF and show some potential cover art of a woman inside the classic Alien space suit, looking fearfully back at what the reflection tells us, is a first-movie-like interpretation of the Xenomorph. It also shows us the game's name as Alien: Isolation, suggesting perhaps a survival horror type game, which if the setting from the first film is nailed well, would make for a good genre choice.

alienisolation
In space no can hear you OMGWTFISTHAT!

isolation

The second image shows a space station, or ship of some sort, with detritus and possible bodies drifting away from it, while it orbits a planet – and I think we can all guess which one that is.

These images play into previous rumours we've heard that said it would be a first person horror title featuring Ripley's daughter, Amanda Ripley, who we know very little about beyond that she died between the events of the first and second Alien films.

KitGuru Says: I probably won't ever end up playing this, as much as I love the Alien's franchise. Either it'll be so poor that I won't want it to taint the series, or it'll be so good that I'll crap myself too much to ever boot it up.

[Cheers CVG]
