A few months ago, a 20th Century Fox employee teased a potential Aliens crossover with popular multiplayer horror title, Dead by Daylight. Now, just a couple of weeks after the launch of the Nic Cage survivor DLC, Behaviour Interactive has officially announced Alien as the next DLC.

Within the next few months, Dead by Daylight players will be able to pick up the Alien DLC. As part of this crossover, we should see the Xenomorph introduced as a playable killer, and we may also see some new survivor characters introduced. As far as new survivors go, Ripley is the obvious inclusion.

The teaser confirms that we'll learn more about this DLC on the 8th of August. It is unclear if this will be a gameplay teaser, or a more substantial DLC reveal with release date news included. With the Nic Cage DLC, there were a couple of teasers before we got the full character breakdown and a release date.

It has been a couple of years since the last Alien-based game released. In June, we'll be getting a brand new one, with Aliens: Dark Descent set to launch.

Today marks the release of the official gameplay trailer for Aliens: Dark Descent, a new game based on the Aliens IP. Players will command a squad of marines attempting to put an end to a Xenomorph outbreak on a foreign moon. It's not just the Xenomorphs you'll have to worry about though, as there will also be rogue operatives attempting to disrupt the operation.

The game will feature large open levels, strategic/tactical gameplay, customisable squad members with different classes and a range of unique weapons and tools to utilise in missions.

Aliens: Dark Descent will launch for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5 on the 20th of June.

The Alien franchise has had a rocky and inconsistent track record across all of the various mediums which it exists within, including video games. 20th Century Games has now announced a partnership with Survios to create a brand new “intense single-player, action-horror game set in the iconic Alien universe.”

Making the announcement via press release, Survios, the studio behind VR titles Sprint Vector and Creed: Rise to Glory announced “a new collaboration with 20th Century Games to develop an intense single-player, action-horror game set in the iconic Alien universe and built for PC, console, and VR.”

We have yet to see a trailer for the game, however more information has been promised to be shown at San Diego Comic-Con, which is set to take place on the 21st of July. That being said, the studio did confirm a few early details regarding the game.

This as-of-yet unnamed Alien title will “feature an original storyline, set between the Alien and Aliens films, where a battle hardened veteran has a vendetta against the Xenomorphs”. Aside from this vague plot detail, we also know that the game is being developed using Epic’s latest and greatest Unreal Engine 5.

Alien Isolation was by far one of the best translations of the original film’s atmosphere and tension into video game form. Hopefully this upcoming title – powered by UE5 – manages to match or even surpass the aforementioned Alien Isolation. Luckily, we won't have to wait too long to see what vibe Survios is going for with their upcoming title. The full press release can be found HERE.

Back in March, Cold Iron Studios officially revealed Aliens: Fireteam Elite, promising a ‘Summer 2021' release window. Now, the three-player co-op shooter has a new trailer, as well as a final release date.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite, formerly known as just Aliens: Fireteam, is a third-person, squad-based survival shooter. It sounds a lot like Left 4 Dead with Xenomorphs on paper, but there are some other elements to it that set it apart. The game includes RPG elements in the form of character classes, skill trees and modifiable weapons, opening the door for character build experimentation. There are five character classes so far – gunner, demolisher, technician, doc and recon, each with their own abilities.

The game won't ship at a full $60, instead, the entry price is $39.99. However, there is a deluxe edition that includes four cosmetic DLC bundles, which costs $69.99. Whether you opt for the standard or deluxe edition, all pre-order customers get the ‘Hardened Marine Pack', which includes another set of skins and an emote.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is releasing on the 24th of August for PC (Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5.

KitGuru Says: This game has been in the works for six years, so it'll be interesting to finally get some hands on time with it. Are any of you planning on picking this one up?

Aliens: Colonial Marines released to a critical drubbing from all corners of the gaming press back in 2013.  The game went on to be one of the poster boys for the ‘downgrade' phenomenon that also affected games like Watch Dogs. Aliens: Colonial Marines looked fantastic in press demos, but when the game finally came out, it was a broken mess, with the Xenomorph AI being a standout issue. It turns out though, that a stray typo in a file may have been responsible for much of the AI issues.

This spelling mistake was found back in October last year by ModDB user, jamesdickinson963, an avid Aliens: Colonial Marines modder. He found that there was a stray typo in the PecanEngine.ini file for the game: “PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather” is the offending line, with the word ‘tether’ being misspelt as ‘Teather’.

Fixing this spelling mistake happens to make the Xenomorph AI a lot more frightening, but in a good way this time. Changes include better tactical position adjustment, better patrolling and improved target zoning.

Obviously, Xenomorph AI wasn't the only issue with Aliens: Colonial Marines, but it is a big one, and this small fix could help people enjoy the game a little bit.

KitGuru Says: This sums up the troubled development process that surrounded Aliens: Colonial Marines, a simple fix that should not really have been overlooked. Do you fancy playing the game with this new improved AI?

One of the more eye catching stories in the world of science in the past week involved one researcher's suggestion that the dimming of a distant star known as KIC 8462852 in a strange pattern, could suggest giant “alien megastructures,” were orbiting it. The scientific study that prompted this idea didn't mention aliens anywhere, but did discount a lot of more typical ideas.

Addressing the shoulder shrugging by the scientific community, veteran of the Kerbal Space Program, Scott Manley, took to Youtube to discuss the actual potential for alien life or evidence of its passing at the far-flung star.

kerbalspace
With time warp, these intrepid explorers might make it within a few years…

The reason, Manley points out, the idea of aliens being involved in such a dimming of the star is even being considered at all, is because many of the more traditional ways in which a star could be dimmed have been disproved as more evidence has been discovered. Whatever the object is that's blocking some of the star's light during certain time periods, it's enormous, as it reduces the star's brightness by a full 22 per cent.

Although he said there is some potential for a number of clustered comets to have such an effect, that seems almost as unlikely as an alien construction doing the same, so what could it be?

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UZdXJQERHE']

One suggestion he puts forward is the idea of a partial Dyson Sphere, which would envelope the star in order to harness a large portion of its energy for powering advanced alien technology. More likely however and indeed, in many ways just as exciting, Manley believes that since a dimming of this scale and type is hitherto not been observed, the solution to what is causing it will likely lead to new scientific discoveries.

Nevertheless, SETI has now turned the Allen Telescope Array towards KIC 8462852 in order to see if it can pick up any transmissions from the distant system. Of course anything that does arrive will have taken almost 1,500 years to get here, so we wouldn't expect any relevant communication, neither would a return message be possible in any reasonable capacity.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: One of the best things about science, is that proving something isn't true is almost exciting as proving something is true. Finding no evidence of aliens just suggests that some weirder natural phenomenon is ocurring at the star, in which case, finding out what that is will prove very intriguing.

The search for alien life around the world has been ongoing for much of the past century, with various individuals and organisations pointing listening devices to the sky in the hopes of hearing a message from another people on another world. We also look for them too, with high powered telescopes and imaging systems aimed at far flung stars. One of these stars has some strange clusters of matter in its orbit, that don't appear planet-like. One suggestion has been that they could be ‘alien megastructures.”

The star in question is KIC 8462852, an F-type main-sequence star located some 1,481 light years from Earth. While the star itself is quite typical, what orbits it isn't. While the Kepler telescope's imaging in 2009 suggested it could have a habitable planet orbiting it, further research by Penn State University showed up a bizarre light pattern around the star; not one usually associated with a passing planet.

Many researchers from there and elsewhere consider the star an anomolay, because of what appears to be a cluster of matter orbiting it. Certain typical suggestions like the kind of debris seen after the formation of a young star or a number of comets trailing a planet – but the star isn't young enough for the former, and the latter would be very, very unlikely.

haloring
As long as we don't do anything that releases the Flood, it's cool

Of course an alien civilisation's space-station constructions would be even less likely, but it's a possibility that Penn State researcher Jason Wright is considering.

“I was fascinated by how crazy it looked,” Wright said to The Atlantic. “Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilisation to build.”

He's recently teamed up with SETI and together they plan to point a radio dish at the star to see if they can pick up any potential transmissions emitting from the system. Results from any such experiments are expected to be in by as soon as January, so we may soon have our answer.

KitGuru Says: Even if the matter cluster is a form of alien structure, the chances of it being dead and long deserted are much higher than it being active.

XCOM 2 is a game that assumes you failed to stop the alien menace in the original. It assumes you failed so hard that you didn't even put up much of a defence, but that doesn't matter, as you can put up one now. With a new mobile base, new equipment, new soldiers and new skills, you'll take the fight back to those that have overtaken the world and enslaved its inhabitants, and you'll do it while constantly on the move.

While those guerilla tactics are great for staying hidden, they aren't so cohesive to base building – a core aspect of XCOM gameplay. So what's to be done? In XCOM 2, you modify your ship.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ-rTdoiJZU']

The Avenger, your home away from the only home you ever knew, is a repurposed alien transport vessel, that's fitted with all of the equipment, vehicles and hanger space you need. However, you may need more, so over time, your men will reclaim portions of the ship, convert its alien technology to your own uses and gradually improve what the ship/base and your soldiers are capable of.

basebuilding

The video above doesn't just cover how the base is built though, it shows how it's managed, how information is gathered and missions are spawned. It doesn't get into the turn based ground combat, but we know how that works already, it's the more meta stuff that's an exciting revelation.

KitGuru Says: What do you think of how the game is coming along? It seems like quite a new interesting take on the XCOM formula. I'm just finishing up a Xenonauts campaign myself, so perhaps I'll give this a bash when it shows up.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was a highly anticipated game a couple of years back. It had an amazing E3 demo that fooled press and fans alike with an impressive vertical slice of the game that turned out to be nothing like the final product. As you would imagine, fans were upset after having been mislead on numerous occasions and proceeded to file a lawsuit against Sega and Gearbox Software.

After a while, Gearbox Software was dropped from the lawsuit, while Sega managed to settle for $1.25 million. However, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, has not been quiet when it comes to his opinion of the lawsuit. Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Pitchford claimed that the suit was “a huge waste of time” and went on to say that fans involved were using “mafia style extortion tactics”.

Aliens-Gamplay

Despite the false advertising and blatant misleading that occurred with Aliens: Colonial Marines, Pitchford is under the impression that ‘the market' should judge products and not the legal system: “The market proved it was doing its job perfectly. The market is dispassionate — rewarding what it likes and punishing what it doesn't. There is an objectivity and fairness in the open market's harsh, firm justice.”

When we first heard that District 9 director Neil Blompkamp was going to be directing a sequel in the Alien franchise, along with the hope that he'd skip over the latter half of the series, was one that somehow he could get Michael Biehn to come back and finish the story of Corporal Hicks. So far so good then, as the Aliens and Terminator actor has now confirmed he's set to start filming some time this August.

This news broke on Biehn's Instagram feed (via CultCinema) when he was asked about scheduling for the Sheffield Comicon. Ultimately he wasn't sure if he could make it to the August event due to conflicts with filming the new Aliens movie. He specifically called it “Aliens,” continuing to add wood to the speculative fire that this will be a sequel following on from the second movie.

biehn
With a combined age of 123, Weaver and Biehn may have to take it a bit slower on set

The difficulty now may be with what story they can tell. Sigourney Weaver and and Biehn are a lot older than they once were, so even discounting Alien 3 and Resurrection, some time dilation or CGI de-ageing will need to take place in order to make it fit. If we're honest too, as pumped as Blomkamp is to work on the movie, District 9 is the movie he's most well remembered for. Elysium is a film that even the director himself thinks wasn't particularly good and Chappie isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

It's a difficult one, because as much as we love the Alien movies, as a franchise, it's hardly been the most well received over the years. While the original is a great mash up of sexual aggression and sci-fi horror and the sequel is a fantastic, action orientated take on the universe, from there on in its much less impressive. Three was arguably ok, but Resurrection was just weird and the AVP movies that followed aren't even worth mentioning in the same sentence.

If the recent success of Alien: Isolation has taught us anything, it's that despite the abortive efforts of the Aliens vs Predator movies and the Promethius film, people still love the Alien franchise; but more so for its roots than its branches. Fortunately then, it looks like we might get a less action orientated sequel in the series, with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp at the helm.

The difficulty comes with when the movie will be set in the Alien timeline. It's said that the film will take place sometime after Prometheus 2 (via Cinemablend), which depending on the time-lapse between the first and second movies, could place the film a little before the original Alien movie, or much later, since “after,” doesn't really lock it down to any particular part of the timeline.

sigalien
Blomkamp previously posted this unofficial concept art months before announcing his directorship

Blomkamp however has stated a strong desire to work with Sigourney Weaver on the project, potentially reprising her role as Ellen Ripley. However, unless age reduction technology was used to alter her appearance, the movie would need to be set far after the original Alien to make much sense. In reality, considering the amount of time she spent in hyper sleep, it would be difficult to imagine her fitting into anything outside of the events already established.

alien3
Hey look, it's what Alien 3 should have been

This is why some are wondering whether the least liked movies in the (main) Alien franchise, three and Resurrection, may be cut out and an alternate timeline created. It certainly would be interesting to see Hicks survive alongside Newt and Ripley.

Ridley Scott's only involvement with the project will be the capacity of a producer. He is still expected to direct the Prometheus sequel.

I use the word “waltz” deliberately, too, as while Amanda might be breathing heavily and sounding every bit afraid, her actions upon seeing the Xenomorph hot on her tail are far too relaxed. Move Ripley!

The Aliens: Colonial Marines class action lawsuit is turning ugly as Sega starts pointing the finger at Gearbox Studios, claiming that the developer mismanaged the marketing for the game and caused all of the controversy surrounding its release.

Just last month, Sega accepted a settlement deal in the case, agreeing to pay out $1.25 million but despite this, the company refused to admit to any guilt and is now resorting to dumping the blame on Gearbox, which recently appealed to have its name dropped from the case. According to new documents, Sega believes that Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, played a huge part in the Aliens: Colonial Marines marketing strategy:

“The parties had to mutually agree to the ‘precise particulars of marketing assets' delivered by Gearbox. Gearbox's participation – Randy Pitchford's, in particular – was a key element in the ACM marketing strategy from the beginning.”

Sega states that it was given “absolute discretion” on the game's marketing but it was not solely responsible as Gearbox previously claimed when it appealed to have its name dropped from the lawsuit. All marketing decisions had to be agreed upon by both parties.

According to the publisher, this wasn't the first time it had trouble dealing with the Gearbox CEO, an email obtained by Polygon shows that he leaked information at an E3 2011 panel and did a similar thing leading up to the launch of Borderlands 2.

“I spoke face to face to Gearbox's Steve Gibson about their persistent panel leaking,” Sega GM and Director of Brand Marketing,  Matt Eyre said, in reference to E3 2011.

“Effectively- it's Randy Pitchford doing whatever the fuck he likes. Apparently he did it twice on Borderlands 2 also, against all plans and despite the fact they asked him not to. I think our best result here is that we have no more panel sessions .”

KitGuru Says: Aliens: Colonial Marines was a disaster and it looks like it may have all been caused by studio mismanagement, which is a shame. Hopefully this year's Alien Isolation will prove to be a better game.

Alright guys, let's do this. We've seen teases, heard rumours and glanced upon leaked box art but now finally, Sega has unveiled not only details on the game, but our first look at Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter and a devblog that explains some of the motivations behind the game's development.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnqk12RWWUY'] Did anyone else chuckle at the overly obvious ‘this isn't the final game' notice?

In the trailer we see Ripley making her way – alone – around a station/ship, using tools to cut through bulkheads and avoiding the seemingly stalking presence of the Alien threat. It looks a little scripted in places, which might mean we're in for a pretty linear affair, but I'm still holding out hope that this is more of a survival horror experience, rather than a corridor with a few jump scares.

It's very pretty, but so was the original Aliens: Colonial Marines (ACM) trailer and look how that turned out.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlgg9C5XqKE']

The devblog is even more interesting in reality, as it shows some very heavily influenced scenes that just look fantastic. The silence of the ship, the big, round table from the original movie, the 70s future tech – there's a lot of elements here that have quite clearly been taken from the first Alien film, influences the next Alien game heavily needed after the run (sometimes through whole levels) and gun gameplay from ACM.

You'll also be pleased to hear that there is just a single Xenomorph in this game and you'll be worried about where it's coming from next. Briefly we see a player use their torch to check between some piping, as we all know from the film's ending, that those aliens love hiding between some warm steam ducts.

No word on who these people are (apart from Ripley), but presumably they're co-op team mates. I wonder what that key around Ripley's neck is for?

At the end of the video they say that they wanted to make the Alien game people have been waiting for. So far it looks like they might have gotten it right, but with the previous Alien game being such a disappointment, it's going to take something special to brush away that jaded view of Alien games.

Alien: Isolation is set for release towards the end of 2014, on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

KitGuru Says: Well I'm still impressed. The trailer looks a little scripted, but it's a trailer, that's sort of the point. I look forward to seeing some more gameplay footage, hopefully with a better look into the scavenging element they briefly touch on in the videos. I want to see how Amannda improvises her defence.

I just hope if I rig up a make-shift flamethrower no idiot stands in the way when I could fry the thing.

We're all a bit jaded on Alien games at the moment, I understand that. Aliens: Colonial Marines was such a colossal disappointment, it's either stupidity or bravery that has Creative Assembly taking that horse away from Gearbox and clambering back on it this soon after release. Which is perhaps why this is leaked imagery and not something official. Still, it looks somewhat promising even in this state.

The two images that have landed come from (where else?) NeoGAF and show some potential cover art of a woman inside the classic Alien space suit, looking fearfully back at what the reflection tells us, is a first-movie-like interpretation of the Xenomorph. It also shows us the game's name as Alien: Isolation, suggesting perhaps a survival horror type game, which if the setting from the first film is nailed well, would make for a good genre choice.

In space no can hear you OMGWTFISTHAT!

isolation

The second image shows a space station, or ship of some sort, with detritus and possible bodies drifting away from it, while it orbits a planet – and I think we can all guess which one that is.

These images play into previous rumours we've heard that said it would be a first person horror title featuring Ripley's daughter, Amanda Ripley, who we know very little about beyond that she died between the events of the first and second Alien films.

KitGuru Says: I probably won't ever end up playing this, as much as I love the Alien's franchise. Either it'll be so poor that I won't want it to taint the series, or it'll be so good that I'll crap myself too much to ever boot it up.

[Cheers CVG]

Nintendo's Miiverse, the social networking hub of its poorly selling console, the Wii U, is set to expand its influence to include both PC and smartphone platforms, with Nintendo looking to debut the latter of those two systems sometime between April and May.

Initially the functionality won't be great, with just the ability to post comments and read others. You'll be able to do some doodles too of course, an activity that has become quite a popular activity on the Wii U; perhaps because the game selection is so lacking right now.

Some of the drawings are better than the games they're based off of

The 3DS version of the Miiverse doesn't have a release date as of yet, but in some ways its surprising that it wasn't available at launch, considering Nintendo's proclivity for bundling handheld function into its consoles.

According to Polygon's report, Nintendo is also in talks with developers to see what they would like to see in the Miiverse API.

KitGuru Says: Nice to see Nintendo getting this done, but as with the loading times patch, why wasn't this ready for the launch of the console?

While the industry itself might be experiencing wobbles, games still rake in a huge amount of money. But the traditional methods of promotion might be in trouble if the apparent lessons learned from the ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines' launch prove accurate. KitGuru considers the power of a well placed ad campaign.

Some of the media reaction to the latest instalment of the Alien franchise was hostile to say the least.

Having read a lot of reviews and commentary, London's largest newspaper, Metro, really managed to hammer home the point. Try not to smile while reading this:-

“Regarding the furore surrounding the release of Aliens: Colonial Marines, I’ve come to the opinion that what happened with this game basically amounts to false advertising. It was promoted as a Gearbox game, not a TimeGate game. It was sold off the back of what’s turned out to be a demo created for a high-end PC on non-commercially available parts that had no possibility of ever looking like that on consumer grade PCs, never mind consoles. It was supposed to be developed by a team that ‘loved and respected’ the franchise, instead it was farmed out to whoever could do the job cheapest with no thought or care at all.”

Another review – this time for the XBox 360 version – kicked off, “Five minutes into Aliens: Colonial Marines the game makes a mistake from which it cannot recover”.

Just one more before we move on, “This latest of oh-so-many embarrassments bearing the much-abused Aliens name was six years in development, but you'd be forgiven for thinking Aliens: Colonial Marines was churned out in six months”.

OK. We get it. Bad game.

TV advertising managed to grab independent reviews by the throat with this launch

.

So here's a question, ‘If you were running marketing for Sega on this title – and you had a fair idea that the critics were going to smash it- how would you spend your advertising dollars?'

Or, to put it another way, ‘How did this game manage to top the charts?' – albeit briefly.

Instead of running campaigns over several months to build interest and intrigue, the chaps at Sega engaged a genius create agency called Uber and set about making a hardcore TV campaign that would last just 4 days.

Yep. That's right.

4 days.

The purpose?

We reckon the marketing folks involved knew the game would not stand up to intense scrutiny, so why give people time to research their purchase?

Big campaign, with a highly focused spend (that shows images that will only be available to those with one of the most amazing PCs on the planet) – and let's see what happens.

Here's the trailer that got the job done. Did it work for you?

[yframe url='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfOOOAN9e9w']

KitGuru says: Hitting number one spot, even only for a moment, must be the aim of any game launch. Once the initial rush of ‘Not quite gullible, but maybe didn't spend as much time checking out the game as we should have' folks was over, sales dropped by almost 90%. But without the Uber campaign, it would never had hit near its launch revenue – so you have to say it worked. On the other hand, smart folks who read the reviews, made better purchasing decisions. Rock on reviewers, is what we say.
