Music can play a major role in elevating video games from being a good game, to a great one. Unfortunately access to video game music – especially from Japan – has historically been limited, leading fans to often resort to listening to covers of their favourite game soundtracks. A series known for its music, Persona, is finally making its way to music streaming services, with the many of Atlus’ game soundtracks now available on Spotify.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Atlus West revealed that “Soundtracks from the Persona series, Catherine, and Etrian Odyssey are now available on Spotify!” They have also been added to Apple Music, for those who prefer to use Apple’s service.

As the songs are listed in Japanese, simply searching for the album will not yield the results. Instead, by clicking the link HERE, you’ll be taken directly to a playlist which contains almost 750 songs across all of Persona’s games. The OST for Catherine meanwhile can be found HERE.

While publishers have slowly been adding their back catalogue of game soundtrack to music streaming services, a major omission comes from Nintendo, who has yet to adopt this more modern form of music consumption. Hopefully the console manufacturer, who has created some of the most iconic video game music of all time, will follow suit soon enough.

Persona 4 Golden’s release for PC back in June was a welcome surprise for many. The critically acclaimed JRPG originally released for the PlayStation Vita all the way back in 2012 – with no further re-releases. It seems though that the success of the PC port has now proven to SEGA the viability of the PC platform, as the publisher has announced its intentions to bring more games to PC.

During SEGA’s investor QnA as part of its Fiscal meeting, Haruki Satomi (President and Group COO) and Koichi Fukazawa (Senior Executive Vice President and Group CFO) were asked “Persona 4 the Golden has been selling well on Steam, but do you have any plans to sell newly released games on Steam as well?”

In response, the representatives stated that “We remastered Persona 4 the Golden, a title previously sold on the PlayStation Vita, and released it for sale on Steam this fiscal year. Because of the game’s critical acclaim and its low selling price, sales were much stronger than expected. We will continue to actively promote porting previously released titles to Steam and new platforms.”

They further added that, “We are also negotiating with platform holders for new games in the future, and we’re considering ways to sell under favorable conditions for each title. Among them are measures such as preparing PC versions of the titles from the beginning, with multi-platform releases in mind.”

Persona 4 Golden sold over 500,000 copies on Steam in under a month. Furthermore, the game currently holds a 10/10 user rating on the platform with over 22,000 reviews. Many SEGA titles have failed to make their way onto the PC platform over the years. It is therefore encouraging to see that the publisher is now willing to re-evaluate these releases, hopefully bringing more of its backlog – and future titles – to the platform.

Persona 5 Royal is the enhanced/expanded version of the much-loved Persona 5. Released in October 2019 in Japan and March 2020 worldwide to universal acclaim, the game’s sales reception appears to be matching its critical one, as the developers (Atlus) have now announced that Persona 5 Royal has surpassed 1.4 million copies sold.

In a press release (and as translated by Gematsu), Persona 5 Royal’s publisher Atlus revealed that that the JRPG has already sold over 1.4 million copies. This is significant especially due to the fact that Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced version of the 2017 JRPG Persona 5.

The changes between the two versions include enhanced graphics, more side content, and some new story elements – among other additions. Still, its success serves to further elevate the Persona 5 series, as when combined with the original release, the JRPGs are now closing in on 5 million copies sold.

Atlus also reported that the Persona 5 spin-offs have been performing well too, with Persona 5 Scramble – the musou-styled hack n’ slash RPG – selling over 480,000 copies despite only releasing in Japan and Asia.

With how well the Persona 5 sub-series is currently performing, it’ll be interesting to see just how long it’ll be until we see the release of Persona 6. Persona 4 first released all the way back in 2008, with 5 not arriving until almost a decade later. Will fans have to wait just as long for the next entry in the (now) popular JRPG franchise? Only time will tell.

The Persona series is one of SEGA’s most highly acclaimed franchises. Developed by Atlus, the JRPG series has over time acquired more and more dedicated fans. Released on the 31st of March in the West, Persona 5 Royal represents an enhanced version of the 2017 award-winning title and somehow managed to surpass the original’s high critical acclaim. It would seem this praise has translated to sales, as SEGA has now reported that Persona 5 Royal has achieved “record sales.”

As reported by PersonaCentral, in response to a question regarding Persona 5 Royal in SEGA’s most recent financial report, the publisher announced that “Persona 5 Royal began selling in the U.S. and Europe on March 31st, achieving record sales”. Though little more detail was provided, it was revealed that while “physical sales were restricted, the ratio of digital sales increased significantly and are remaining strong in FY21/3 (fiscal year ending in March 2021).”

These ‘restrictions’ mentioned by SEGA are likely to do with the current global pandemic, which has led to the closure of most if not all game retail shops. That being said, the games industry is moving towards a digital dominated structure, and Persona 5 Royal’s sales success is indicative of that.

Persona 5 originally released in 2017 in the West to universal acclaim, achieving a Metacritic score of 93. The game has since sold over 3.2 million copies. Persona 5 Royal is touted as an enhanced version of the 2017 title, and brings with it graphical improvements, alongside hours of extra story content – among other additions.

These improvements did not go unappreciated, as Persona 5 royal currents sits at a Metacritic score of 95, making it one of the highest rated games of the generation. With Royal also seeing “record sales”, it’ll be interesting to see whether it will surpass the original Persona 5 in the long run.
