AMD gave tech enthusiasts the first glimpse of its new Ryzen 4000 mobile processors back at CES 2020 in January. The new AMD Renoir CPUs were announced with five models listed, ranging from the Ryzen 3 4300U up to an eight-core Ryzen 4800U.

At the time of the introduction to the new Ryzen 4000 mobile processors, there was no mention of a Ryzen 9 part like we have seen in desktop machines with the 3900X (12-core) and 3950X (16-core) beast. However, that may be about to change since Hardwaretimes has spotted a video from Lenovo that apparently spills the beans of a Ryzen 9 4900U processor in one of the company’s new laptops.

In the video posted by Notebook Italia, there is a new Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14” and 15” document listing the system specifications for both Intel and AMD variants. The Intel model lists an Ice lake Core i7-1065G7 CPU while the AMD version clearly lists a Ryzen 9 4900U processor in the spec sheet. The video has since been taken down but Hardwaretimes took screengrabs of the specification.

There is no mention of core count for the new AMD Ryzen 9 4900U part, however, if the current desktop SKUs are anything to go by, it would be pretty safe to assume the Ryzen 9 4900U will be a 12-core part. However, 12 cores may not be necessary for a mobile device, so we could end up seeing this processor with an 8-core, 16-thread configuration with higher clock speed than the already confirmed Ryzen 4800U.

Both the new Intel and AMD based Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 laptops feature SSD drives with capacity ranging from 256GB to 1Tb, up to 16Gb DDR4 memory, integrated AMD or Nvidia graphics with FHD IPS displays. The Yoga Slim 7 also features an ultra-portable form factor and weighs in at just 1.12kg.

KitGuru says: Lenovo may have just let it slip that AMD is ready to offer even more performance in the mobile PC space to compete with Intel just like it has in the desktop PC market. What do you guys think of this possible Ryzen 4900U processor from AMD? Will it be 8-core or do you think AMD will introduce 12 or 16 core CPUs to laptops?

It’s been a busy week at CES 2020 and we have seen some interesting and innovative new tech. Luke and Leo are now back in the UK, but before they left they sat down one last time to discuss which products they were most impressed with from this year's show in Las Vegas.

Right at the beginning of CES 2020, AMD reminded us that the flagship Ryzen Threadripper processor will be launching soon. The 64-core Threadripper 3990X is something which Luke is really looking forward to in 2020, AMD also confirmed at CES that there will not be a 48-core Threadripper 3000 processor, so that debate should be over.

The Gigabyte 2U server caught the guys attention at CES, the server had eight 64-core AMD EPYC processors installed. The fact that the Gigabyte 2U server had over 1000 threads of compute power inside something the height of a drinks can, is extremely impressive.

In terms of new mobile devices, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop with an AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU inside stood out for the guys. However, Leo is worried that it may come with a rather hefty premium price attached, once it is released later this year.

Cooler Master entering the monitor market was something the guys found interesting but not ground-breaking. Cooler Master’s new monitor series is focused on build quality with its premium stand solution The range will include 16:9 aspect ratio 27-inch and ultra-wide 21:9, 34-inch versions. MSI also had some innovative monitors and systems on display that included the Human Machine Interface (HMI) that displays system information in real-time via a small LCD screen.

Luke and Leo saw a lot of new technology branded as the world’s first at CES, one innovation that the guys truly agree is a world’s first is the Corsair RGB glass panel. Concept Orion is a prototype tempered glass panel that could be included on high-end Corsair cases in the future. It has CAPELLIX RGB LEDs embedded into the panel that can be configured and synchronised like all other RGB lighting products.

CES 2020 is upon us, and although the show doesn't official start until Tuesday, our guys on the ground – Luke and Leo – got to check out new products from Acer at their suite tour and saw some interesting new PC systems including notebooks, desktops and Predator gaming laptops.

Acer has launched a new series of ConceptD 7 Ezel laptops aimed at professional design, the ConceptD 7 Ezel series includes a 4K UHD IPS display, mounted on Acer’s new Ezel hinge design that allows for various usage modes to easily display on-screen content to colleges or clients. The 4K IPS display features 400-nit brightness, 100% Adobe RGB colour gamut and is calibrated for PANTONE Matching System colours.

Acer says the ConceptD 7 Ezel will include the 10th generation Intel Core H-series processor in the near future, with Nvidia RTX graphics and up to 32 GB DDR4 RAM to plough through those intense workloads. Another interesting feature of the ConceptD 7 Ezel is the included Wacom PMR pen which can be used to write or draw pretty much anything on screen. The Acer ConceptD 7 Ezel range will be available in Europe in May 2020, starting at €2,699.

Continuing with the ConceptD series, Acer has a couple of desktop system on display too, the ConceptD 700 workstations have had a few little updates, such as USB charging while the system is turned off and a redesign of the aesthetics, with a new wood effect top panel. ConceptD 700 desktops feature Intel Xeon E processors and up to Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 graphics. The Acer ConceptD 700 workstation will be available in Europe from March 2020 starting from €1,699.

Acer also showcased a new range of Predator gaming laptops that feature a 300Hz 1080p 1ms IPS display from AU Optronics in the Predator Triton 500. We should expect to see the 300Hz display equipped Predator Triton 500 become available in a new model including Intel 10th generation processors when they become available.

A new range of Acer Travelmate laptops were on display too, the Travelmate series features Intel 10th generation Comet Lake processors, not 10th generation Intel Ice lake just yet. Acer Travelmate are mid-range laptops for business type use, the P2 version is MIL STD-810G tested for durability. The whole Travelmate range features excellent battery life with fast charging support, they are thin and lightweight which makes them easy to carry around.

Acer had a couple of Project Athena laptops on show during the suite tour too, the Acer Swift 3 range includes a 13.5-inch 3:2 ratio 2K display designed for content creation type usage. The Swift 3 series is available with Intel 10th generation Ice Lake processors and weighs in at just 1.2Kg, making them ultra-portable. An AMD version is available too, featuring a Ryzen 4000 up to 4-core processor with a 16:9 1080p display, geared more towards media consumption use and should be a little cheaper than the Intel versions.

The new Acer Spin 3 series is a 2-in1 range of laptops for personal use that can be operated in either a default laptop mode or as a tablet with a Wacom AES 2.0 stylus pen. The Spin 3 series feature 10th generation Intel Ice Lake Core i5 processors with Iris Plus or Intel UHD graphics. The Acer Spin 5 series is a higher-end version featuring 10th generation Intel Ice Lake Core i7 processors and high-end Iris Plus graphics. The Spin 5 series is equipped with a 13.5-inch 2K 3:2 ratio display which adds 18% more vertical space compared to the Spin 3 16:9 display.

The Acer Spin 5 series will be available in Europe from March 2020 starting at €999, the Spin 3 series is due to be available in February 2020 priced from €649.

KitGuru says: Acer seems to have put a big focus on displays for its 2020 laptop ranges. A 300Hz display on the Predator gaming laptop range will certainly interest first-person shooter gamers. What do you guys think to these new laptop systems unveiled by Acer at CES?

The post Rumours suggest AMD Ryzen 4000 will offer significant performance gains first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
According to AMD, Zen 3 processors will bring an entirely new architecture rather than just a simple refresh of what we have today. Which means upcoming Ryzen 4000 and EPYC Milan processors that are expected to be officially unveiled later in the new year, will provide substantial core performance gains over the current generation.

The exact amount of performance increase likely to come from Zen 3 is still unknown, however, according to rumours that have been circling in the past few days, AMD Zen 3 could bring as much as 17% IPC gains over Zen 2, which would mean we could see a significant increase in core performance.

This may not be a huge surprise since AMD has already said that Zen 3 will offer performance increases in line with previous architecture releases – Zen 2 Ryzen 3000 CPUs provided a 15% increase over the previous generation, so the Performance increase for Ryzen 4000 that has been quoted by many sources around the industry seems reasonable.

The question on everyone’s lips is how AMD will achieve this performance increase in such a short time since the launch of Zen 2 Ryzen processors. Well, the answer seems to be that Zen 3 will include a 50% performance increase in Floating Point Units compare to Zen 2 while integer operations will be up 10-12% over the previous generation.

According to rumours, core count in Ryzen 4000 processors will remain on par with Ryzen 3000 CPUs, however, core frequency is expected to be boosted up by 100-200Mhz, coupled with the 17% IPC gain suggests a 15-20% overall core performance improvement for the new Zen 3 processors, compared to the previous Zen 2 generation.

Zen 3 Ryzen 4000 processors are expected to be the final generation to utilise the AM4 socket platform and will be fabbed on the new 7nm EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) process from TSMC, with a completely redesigned architecture from AMD that will not only bring an improvement in performance but leverage power efficiency too.

KitGuru says: AMD Ryzen 3000 CPUs surprised everyone, including AMD themselves, with their performance when released earlier this year. With Ryzen 4000 offering up to 20% increase in performance again, Intel will have some serious catching up to do in 2020 if it wants to compete with AMD in the consumer desktop market.
