Google on Friday revealed that Marvell Technology Group and Nvidia Corp. are working on application processor modules for upcoming Ara smartphones. Previously a number of companies have publicly expressed support of the project Ara, but no one has revealed any particular plans. The disclosure from Google is generally the first announcement of particular Ara-compatible products.

Marvell and Nvidia are designing application processor (AP) modules featuring the first-generation Toshiba UniPro bridge ASICs for project Ara Spiral 2 prototype smartphones. The modules feature Marvell Armada PXA1928 (four ARM Cortex-A53 cores, Vivante GC5000 graphics, 2G/3G/4G communications) and Nvidia Tegra K1 (four ARM Cortex-A15/two Nvidia Denver cores, GeForce graphics based on Kepler architecture with 72 stream processors, no baseband capabilities) system-on-chips, but it is unclear what else, apart from APs and bridges, they include.

motorola_ara_1

While it is nice to see the first AP modules for Google’s project Ara modular smartphones, it should be noted that for now they are only compatible with the Spiral 2 prototypes of the platform. The Spiral 3 prototypes, which are due in Spring, 2015, will reportedly use Toshiba’s second generation UniPro switch and bridge ASICs with a contactless M-PHY data transfer capability (using inductive AC-coupling). It is unclear whether the Spiral 3 prototypes will be compatible with the Spiral 2 hardware.

Google plans to start sales of the first project Ara smartphones next year. It is unknown whether commercial Ara handsets will be based on the Spiral 2 or the contactless Sprial 3 prototype chassis.

KitGuru Says: As smartphones, tablets, notebooks, wearables and other mobile devices gain integrated functionality in a bid to become thinner, smaller and more power efficient at the cost of modularity, Google’s project Ara goes in the opposite direction. Google has publicly acknowledged that the Ara smartphones will be thicker, more power hungry and heavier than off-the-shelf handsets. Will such devices become popular? Or will they remain toys for geeks? Only time will tell.

A few device manufacturers have been really quick to announce Android Lollipop updates, Nvidia is teasing it for the Shield tablet, Some users are already getting it on LG G3 handsets and now Motorola is pushing out Android 5.0 to owners of the new Moto G.

The fact that the Moto G, a budget oriented smartphone, is getting the Android 5.0 update before even the latest Moto X is causing some to scratch their heads. However, it wouldn't be surprising if we saw the Moto X follow shortly. Additionally, device makers across the board seem much more committed to providing swifter Android updates than they have in previous years.

motorola-moto-g-8

What's more interesting is that while the Moto X, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 have all been tested with Android Lollipop, none of them have received the update yet. The Nexus 6 doesn't even have a shipping date yet. In the past, we've seen Nexus devices first in line to receive Google's latest updates while non-Nexus users would often have to wait months.

The Moto G update is confirmed via a Motorola changelog for the smartphone, which notes that update version 22.11.6 is in-fact bringing Android 5.0 to the device. The update is already rolling out to unlocked second generation Moto G owners so if you own one, you might want to check if it has hit your territory yet.

It looks like Nvidia's recently released Shield tablet will be receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update fairly soon. The company released a new teaser video last night, giving users a peek at what new features and improvements will be arriving in the upcoming update.

Android Lollipop is Google's latest version of the OS and has launched alongside the HTC Nexus 9 tablet and the Motorola Nexus 6 smartphone. According to Nvidia, the Shield tablet will be one of the first devices to receive the update, which will roll out later this month. You can see Nvidia's teaser video below:

Users can expect their tablet experience to improve in a few ways, for a start, the Shield Hub application will be given a new UI, which should fit in well with Google's changes to the Android design. Additionally, thanks to a new Android application runtime environment dubbed ‘ART', battery life, performance and application debugging should be improved- allowing for a smoother experience on the tablet and better multitasking.

The Shield tablet is in a unique position in the Android tablet market, it contains Nvidia's powerful Tegra K1 chip, which also features in the Nexus 9 but due to its fairly low price point and gaming features, it should be a pretty compelling option to buyers.

KitGuru Says: The Nvidia Shield tablet is a pretty good option for anyone looking for an affordable Android tablet, whether you are interested in the additional gaming features or not. The only slight downside is that those who are interested in using this tablet for PC game streaming, will have to pick up the controller separately, which bumps up the price a bit.  Do any of you guys own a Shield tablet? What do you think of it so far? Are you looking forward to the Android Lollipop update?

Google's new flagship smartphone, the Nexus 6, may start shipping soon as the device has finally arrived at the FCC for certification testing. The new device is built by Motorola and will be the first phone on the market to use Android Lollipop.

The FCC document confirms that the Nexus 6 will be usable on at least ten LTE bands, most notably, the ones used by most major carriers in the US. There is also another variant of the Nexus 6, which is most likely going to be the international version.

nexus6_fcc1-534x420

The Nexus 6 was revealed earlier this month and has been available for pre-order on the Google Play store for $650, a significantly higher price tag compared to past Nexus smartphones. However, the phone is very high-end this time around, featuring a 6 Inch 1440p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 2.7 GHz CPU and 3GB of RAM.

The Nexus 9 was also announced, which is built by HTC and features Nvidia's powerful Tegra K1 chip.

KitGuru Says: The Nexus 6 marks Google's departure from the usual Nexus formula. It looks like going forward, Google will be producing high-end devices, rather than cheaper  ones with a high price to performance ratio. What do  you guys think of the Nexus 6? Do you think Google should be completely diving in to high end devices?

Google plans to build a special online store that will sell components for modular smartphones that belong to the Project Ara initiative. The intention means that Google will certify modules for smartphones and ensure their quality, which is a rather hard task. Besides, small-volume manufacturing of custom modules will mean that they will be very expensive.

“Anybody can create a module per the specifications of the developer’s kit and put it in the Ara module marketplace, which is analogous to the Google Play Store, and sell directly to consumers,” said Paul Eremenko, head of Project Ara at Google’s ATAP (advanced technology and projects) division, during a question and answer session at Purdue University, reports PCWorld.

The Project Ara modular smartphones will enable end-users to configure and upgrade their handsets themselves by swapping modules. For example, users will be able to separately swap out displays, cameras, antennas and even application processors. The majority of components will be hot-swappable.

“Buyers will be able to see the most popular modules based on reviews and user ratings, much like with apps in the Google Play store,” said Mr. Eremenko.

motorola_ara

Although the head of project Ara claims that everyone can create a module for the Ara platform using Google’s module developers kit (MDK), which contains reference designs, specifications and guidelines, it should be noted that manufacturing of such modules is going to be a problem.

Smartphones and their components are produced in high-volumes in southeast Asia in a bid to cut-down costs. Custom modules from independent hardware developers cannot be produced at such facilities. Consequently, hardware designers will have to use production facilities specifically designed for small-volume manufacturing.

For example, Foxconn Electronics, the world’s largest contract maker of electronics, has a special facility built for making small quantities of prototypes in Santa Clara, California. Google Glass devices are currently made there. Flextronics, another major contract maker of electronics, also has a similar factory in Milpitas, California. The facility is equipped with advanced 3D plastic printing, surface mount technology (SMT) lines, X-ray and test equipment. Other capabilities of the factory include 3D metal printing, CNC machining, anodizing, advanced automation, microelectronics packaging and other. Although it is possible to produce sophisticated modules in small volumes at world-class production facilities, each module will cost rather incredible amount of money.

While Google ATAP is partnering with companies like Flextronics and Quanta so developers can inexpensively turn designs into actual hardware, actual costs of modules remain to be seen.

motorola_ara_1

Google seems to understand all the issues of small-volume manufacturing for hardware developers. The company is currently encouraging designers to create unique modules that do not copy what is available already, but provide capabilities never seen before. For example, sophisticated health sensors can lead to creation of fully-fledged portable medical diagnostic devices. Moreover, with abundant amount of information about the user, Google will be able to tailor his or her experience dynamically.

“That includes galvanic skin response, sweat levels, your pupil dilation, gaze direction, and a variety of things that we can pick up non-invasively about you as you’re interacting with the e-commerce system. If you’re stressed or impatient or bored with the experience, we could present a differently curated experience,” said Mr. Eremenko.

Before the project Ara becomes reality and actual modules hit the market, Google will need to do a lot. The first fully-functional prototype of an Ara smartphone is expected to be demonstrated in December. It usually takes a lot more than one prototype before a device becomes a commercial product.

“There’s a lot more that we need to do in terms of retiring technical risks on the project. We have probably two more …prototypes to make. During the market pilot we have a lot to learn about how people interact with this device,” said Mr. Eremenko.

KitGuru Says: While the project Ara looks good on the pictures, it is such a complex project that its viability in general is really doubtful.

Sony has announced that it will be bringing Google's latest version of Android, Lollipop, to the entire Sony Xperia Z line-up in early 2015. This news follows Google's reveal of Lollipop just yesterday, featuring a design overhaul for the OS along with a slew of technical improvements.

All Xperia Z branded phones and tablets will be receiving the Android 5.0 update, Sony has promised. The full list of devices is : Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

As you can see from the long list of devices, this shows Sony's dedication to supporting its hardware, even years down the line, which is a nice change of pace, most Android phone manufacturers stop supporting devices after just two years.

Sony also added that the Google Play edition of the Xperia Z Ultra will be the first to get the upgrade, closely followed by the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3. “We've been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our Z Series devices as we can, as quickly as we can.”

“We're really excited about the new Sony features and functionality and the improvements we've made to the user experience – and we'll be sharing more soon.”

Motorola has also confirmed that it will be bringing Android 5.0 to its own lineup, including the Moto G 2013 and 2014 The Moto X 2013 and 2014, the Moto E, the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini. Motorola's dedication to supporting Android 5.0 is less surprising as the company is now in charge of the Nexus 6 device.

Apple has revealed that nearly 50 per cent of all iOS devices have upgraded to the latest version, iOS 8, which launched just last week, surpassing Android KitKat's adoption rate in a mere six days. The new statistics were quietly revealed on Apple's App Store distribution site.

The exact percentage of iPhones and iPads already running iOS 8 is 46 per cent while 49 per cent of users are still using iOS 7 – A further five per cent of users are still running iOS 6 or lower. In contrast, around a quarter of Android devices had updated to 4.4 Kit Kat earlier this month.

iOS 8

This time last year, only around 43 per cent of users had updated to iOS 7, the slower adoption rate could be partially down to users not knowing if they like the all new re-design of the OS.

Despite the swift adoption rate, iOS 8 isn't without its problems. Some users are unable to clear enough space to install the update in the first place as it requires 4.7GB free space on iPhones and 6GB free on iPads. Additionally, some users have reported that the update has caused their device's WiFi connection to slow down dramatically. I can confirm that my own iPhone 5s has had some trouble maintaining a solid Internet connection since installing the update.

Google's latest usage statistics have revealed that Android 4.4 KitKat is now running on a fifth of all active Android devices. However, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean still remains supreme, claiming over half of all devices.

Google obtained these statistics by examining active Android devices over a period of seven days ending on the 12th of August. KitKat can now be found on 20.9 per cent of Android devices, which is up from 17.9 per cent in July, just a month earlier.

header-640x347

This bump in growth can be attributed to the recent release of flagship devices from the likes of LG, HTC and Samsung in addition to the continued rollout of the update to older devices.

Despite the impressive growth, the 4.4 update is still lagging behind Jelly Bean, which can be found on 55.3 per cent of devices, which is slightly below July's 56.5 per cent. However, interestingly enough, 26.5 per cent of that figure is made up of devices running Jelly Bean 4.1, the first iteration of the OS update.

Older versions of Android are still knocking around with 13.6 per cent of devices still running 2.3 Gingerbread and a lesser 10.6 per cent running 4.0 Icecream Sandwhich.

Project Volta is Google's effort to improve Android battery life and it seems to be off to a good start as early tests of the Android L feature show a huge battery life improvement.

Project Volta provides a few tweaks to the operating system including better task scheduling, which saves battery life. In addition to this, the OS will track battery sapping activities and a new battery saver mode will kick in when there's only 15 per cent charge left.

android_l_multitasking-100353792-primary.idge

Under controlled conditions, Ars Technica managed a 36 per cent battery improvement over Android Kit Kat. Some XDA Developer Forum members achieved similar results. Certain apps will play a part in results though, one user noticed that Whatsapp was using up 15 per cent of total battery lift, which was likely a beta bug.

This is still an early developer preview but the early results are promising. It's good to see Google taking back control of Android and implementing more optimizations.

We are seeing a fair few leaks of the upcoming Nexus 9 at the moment, right now HTC is supposedly making Google's next tablet and it is set to feature some pretty powerful components.

The latest information comes from evleaks, who claims that the early renders of the device were fake. The tablet will feature a solid aluminum body and “boom sound” front facing speakers, capitalizing on the HTC One's design success.

HTC_Nexus_9_Volantis_Android_Police-900-80
This render is apparently fake.

In addition to the aluminum body, the tablet is being tested with as much as 5GB of RAM but it could still ship with less. Nvidia's Tegra K1 is also set to appear although the tablet has been tested with the Snapdragon 810.

One of the advantages of a 64 bit processor is the ability to take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM so it's possible that HTC might want to make the most of it by adding in 5GB.

The screen will measure in at 8.9 inches with a 2560×1600 resolution, although it is being tested with 1680×1050.

The list of devices set to receive Google's new Android L update has expanded to include all Nexus devices after the Nexus 4. This means that the update will roll out to the Original Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the Nexus 4 handset.

This is all thanks to Google releasing the source code for more devices, which has allowed developers to install the Android L operating system on more devices.

Android L was announced during Google's I/O developers conference with a new design and a whole slew of new features. I/O attendees already have access to the update on Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 5 devices.

Android owners will be able to install an Android L custom ROM soon but the official, final release of the software won't be until October when Google launches its next phone.

KitGuru Says: Android L seems like a pretty nice update, I think a lot of users were beginning to get a bit bored of Jelly Bean- which stuck around for longer than anybody expected.
